      My daughter's dad is Italian, and he was laughing so hard when i showed him this sketch, cause he understands how Italian must sound in the ears of foreigners. And may i add that he is the most patriotic person i've ever known, and the Italian language is like the finest art to him. I myself is Danish, and if someone from another country made a fun sketch of my language, i am sure i would laugh hard about it, cause i know the rest of the world would think my language sound like someone are trying to speak with a potato in the throat. People nowadays are so affraid of offending others, due to wokeness on steriods in the western societies.

    Catherine Tate is a well known British comedian. Yes, this was a comedy sketch but I feel you’re killing it. The chinese woman held up the taping because she was laughing so much. NO-ONE TOOK OFFENCE because it WAS FUNNY and really it was all about her, the translator displaying ignorance and stereotyping the people at the table.

      Without the context of the running character gag, people viewing this RUclips clip may in fact be laughing at the ridicule of foreign people, as my coworkers recently did as they watched this. They all have little patience for migrants and people that "don't speak English".

    It’s the sort of thing that many would say is offensive. But they don’t understand that the joke isn’t on the people from different nationalities. They don’t come off badly. The joke is on Catherine Tate’s character and how she doesn’t realise how inappropriate she’s being. Love it.

    • @OldDevlin
      @OldDevlin 5 месяцев назад +9

      Aye, it's satire. It's taking the micky out of people who have an abundance of confidence, and little to no cultural awareness when it comes to people from other nations. It's making a mockery of the idiots who fall for racial and xenophobic stereotypes, rather than it being a joke aimed at the people from those nations.

    • @storageheater
      @storageheater 5 месяцев назад +4

      plus it's a really careful escalation - she starts out with the safer ones and moves towards the more controversial ones - imagine if it had started at the other end of the table. And it helps that the people she's talking to aren't offended, they're just confused. I think it's definitely very careful about what it's doing really

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@storageheater Agreed. The moment when her colleague puts his head in his hands speaks volumes here. It’s clear that we’re no supposed to condone her characters actions. I think that was an important little addition to make sure the right tone was set.

      Because Africans and Asians experience more racism and people looking down on them in majority white countries than white people do. Maybe that's why they're a tad more sensitive to racism or perceived racism. You know, a bit like why gay people may be a tiny bit more upset by homophobia than a staight person whose never been criticised for their sexuality? It isn't really difficult to work out why unless you're a moron.
      That being said, this comedy sketch is very funny and clearly not racist. But to act like you don't know why certain races may be a bit more sensitive about racial stuff is just silly.

As a European, we all gave different accents, and its why when English go abroad, they will, for example, speak English with a French accent in France. Goodness knows how this woke culture wants to tell us how to think and what we can say. This is humour plain and simple. How anyone could be hurt by the sound of an accent is beyond belief. Love your videos but on this one find your reaction way off mark 😢

    The character isn't specifically offensive. What she is, is delusional and a bit of an attention seeker. What ever you say you need, she claims she can do it. The new computer system doesn't work and needs to be re-programmed. Oh I can do that. One of the solar panels has come off the roof. Oh I can fix that. She then goes on to do the worst possible job of whatever the task is.

You can be insular, and just watch your own TV, or explore the TV of other countries, whereupon you will encounter stuff like this. Look up "Prisencolinensinainciusol" by Adriano Celentano (1972). It's a nonsense song of what English sounds like to an Italian speaker.

    Don’t know much about Catherine Tate but she did a funny impersonation of an old lady on the Graham Norton show at the behest of Tom Cruise. I think it was the inspiration for the character Nan.
