Part of the joke is that the character she is playing “Helen Marsh” is a fantasist who thinks that she can is capable of doing anything and is a recurring character in Catherine Tate shows who manages to fool people into trusting her and then letting them down spectacularly as in this case.
Well yes. That's more than part of the joke. It's the whole joke. A character that is someone who tries to blag everything. Getting more and more ridiculous. People that think it's about 'taking the mick about other people's languages' have missed the joke.
As someone who’s British and watched the Catherine Tate show, this character basically used to tell everyone that she could do anything and then do a very poor job at the task.
The character she is playing is one of those employees that always wants to please and so volunteers for everything even though she is bad at everything
The best bit is she looks at their table cards for where they are from before "translating" for them but when they get to the Chinese lady you know before even seeing her what Nationality she is.

The morning was horrendous (had no idea of the terminology). We broke for lunch and went off to a very liquid lunch (beer and Schnaps and Cognac). As far as I was concerned, I did well in the afternoon, pissed out of my mind (as were the Polish and Germans). Don't think anyone noticed and it was easy to get this huge contract signed....
This is classic brittish humor. Especially at this time people werent afraid to laugh at our differences, uniqueness and similarities. There are shows in other countries where they portray other cultures in a stereotypical way for comedy aswell. The fact that the extra agreed to be in the show and laughed on set shows how they enjoyed this harmless comedy. People need to remember this is nothing about laughing at people but actually laughing at ourselves when we hear a person from another culture speak it just sounds like sounds and not words. And myself being partly Indian, this is just a classic
