  • American Reacts to Dave Allen on Vagaries of the English Language
I react to Dave Allen give us the vagaries of the English language and the convoluted way in which we use it. These vagaries include being nice to people we don't like and being rude to people we love. Dave Allen's way of joke telling was masterful storytelling. So enjoy Dave Allen give the Vagaries of the English Language.

The reference about him going into hiding with Salman Rushdie comes from the time when Salman wrote the Satanic Verses and it offended every Muslim known to man which caused him to end up in hiding. So because Dave used so many swear words on TV and had the complaints was why he said that. Hope that explains slot for you. If I remember correctly, the joke that got him into trouble was about his dad, "who worked for the same company for 50 years man and boy. Never took a day off sick. Never late a single time. When he retired what did they give him? A f@*king alarm clock!" A great joke that needs the profanity to work correctly. Other comedians had swore on the BBC- it was several years after The Young Ones- but it was really unexpected from him by his usual audience.

All the one with common sense stated: Don't like it switch it off. They had to discuss it as the program was transmitted on BBC, which is a "government " channel.

I’m from New Zealand but now living in Australia. We grew up with mainly British comedy in the 60’s & 70’s, the best times for a laugh. We did eventually have American comedy but as you said, American comedy seemed to always ‘state the obvious’ and leave nothing to the imagination & therefore to “us” was generally not funny to “us” such as Roseanne,. But there have been exceptions, we loved “All in the Family”. The only adaptation from a British comedy ( From death do us part ) that really worked for American & International audiences. My favourite American comedy show is “ Seinfeld” where the comedic delivery is expertly done, the characters are varied with their individual personalities. It definitely is “Thinking Man’s comedy” leaves a lot to the viewers imagination, well written, it also plays on the “myths & legends” peculiar to America in a way that lampoons the myths & legends themselves. One that comes to mind was when Kramer copped some (I think)chewing gum to the side of the head, the way It was written, filmed & acted was straight hilarious. IMO nothing has come close to Seinfeld.
Love you channel, I didn’t know that you know so much Brit comedy. 👍

Very 'English' in his character but natural IMO. (I don't know why but TV presenters on the BBC today all seem to need a gimmick - a bit distracting sometimes IMO).

Alan, here's a little something for you to enjoy on how we talk to our closest friends over here in the U.K.
I'm male and I have a long-term lady friend that I've known for over 35 years and many years ago we went out shopping together because she was intent on buying a new dress. After her dragging me around an untold number of dress shops she finally bought one ( I think she spent the equivalent of a Third World country's GDP on it ) - the worst of it was that we went back to the first shop that we'd been in and she bought the first dress that she'd tried on, Sigh! The moral of this story for any unsuspecting man is not to go out clothes shopping with any woman because you'll lose several hours out of your precious life by having to put up with their indecisiveness....if you don't lose that amount of time you'll lose innumerable brain-cells simply by being there.
To continue, when we eventually got back to her house she immediately rushed upstairs and changed into it and then came back downstairs and did the typical female fashion show for me to admire her in it - it's not as if I hadn't seen her in it already in the shop where she'd bought it or the myriad other flippin' dresses that she'd tried on at all of those other shops, is it?
She came out with the line " Does my arse look big in this dress? " to which I immediately replied " No, does it heck....although your arse looks big in ALL of your dresses so why should this one be any different? ". She then said " Fuck off, you bastard....!" and stormed back upstairs and changed back into the outfit that she'd been wearing all day. Surprisingly enough we're still very close friends to this day despite us saying some of the nastiest and crudest things to one another even when we're out in mixed company.

      Really?
Sounds made up to my ear.
      Anyway,
when a female asks "does my bum look big in this?"
You're supposed to respond: "Hang on, let me step back a bit so I can get it all in!"

Well that's very original of you, isn't it, @@justjones5430? Especially when you can somehow miraculously read with your ears....does this mean that you can also speak through your eyes and listen to things through your mouth?
Where I come from I would never dare to regard women or girls as females as you've managed to do....this is because I grew up in a huge family with five sisters and two brothers and my four older sisters would've beaten the living snot out of me for showing such disrespect by referring to any of them as females - just add my mother into the mix as well and I doubt very much if any individual man could overcome the onslaught of five women all at once, don't you?

As a 15 year old lad, my parents took me to see Dave Allen, his TV show was tame compared to his live show -- so much so,12 nuns got up and walked out, about a third of the way through his show. Dave and the whole audience were acutely aware of their departure, it only added to the comedy of the evening. It was a performance I think fondly of and one which I've never forgotten - though, I don't think I would've taken my 15 year olds to see him. 😊
