It's only stereotyping, it's no more offensive than when people try to do a posh English accent and ask us "would you like a cup of tea"
The joke us supposed to be about a useless person trying to blag their way through a situation they've volunteered for just to look good.
I've spent quite a while, in what is my distant past now, in and around India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. I lost count of the times I heard the question "more tea vicar?" I was also asked, a few times, as I had worked in London, "did you wear a suit with stripes and a hat? (pinstripe suit & bowler hat). I was being "stereotyped" just for humour and I found it both funny and welcoming.
@@gilgameshofuruk4060 It's more than that she said she'd done a TEFL in her gap year. It is Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and it's teaching English to foreigners but it does not require, or involve the English speaker knowing anything about the foreign languages that the students speak. There will be a host of different nationalities in the class.
@JM-dm3qk The character appeared in several sketches, making a complete pig's ear of all sorts of tasks, but this is the one that gets picked up on most. I hadn't heard about Catherine Tate teaching ESL, so that's what inspired this sketch, but the character was already established.
I think the joke may be lost on anyone who hasn't had the misfortune to work with a Helpful Herbert who eagerly volunteers for everything and makes a complete ****-up of it.
@@gilgameshofuruk4060 I don't know if Catherine Tate did ESL but the character did in her gap year. I considered teaching at one point which is were I came across TEFL after inquiring about the PGCE. I could see were she would get the sketch from.
It’s The Catherine Tate show, she does loads of different characters, Nan is the best one by far
The clue is in the name...
The name is in the clue...
Clue in is the name the
The claim is in the nude
It's okish, definitely better than Mrs brown's boys, can't stand that shite lol
Apart from the obvious fact that Tate is the butt of the joke, the great thing about this sketch is that if anyone takes offence at a particular accent over another, then they're being hypocritical.
And they a caught red handed when it comes to their race and they're like "oh shit!", so they're forced to accept the humour or look like a total prat. So far, everyone I've seen has chosen the former. It's a genius way to kindly cut down racist attitudes, if only for a moment.
It’s the difference between a racist joke and joke about racism. The joke is on the racist not on a race. We should joke about racism because it’s a ridiculous thing.
British comedy is being the butt of the joke. Dad's Army, Fawlty Towers, Rising Damp was all about the main characters looking foolish.
I noticed king boomer reacted completely different to the pocs compared to the Europeans. White man conditioning obviously works. What a perfect scetch
The Catherine Tate show
I've seen this numerous times but cried with laughter with you.
Same here 🤣
My favourite ever Catherine Tate sketch 😂 would never be allowed on to again now 😡 but I fucking love this 😂
The offensive about it is where the comedy lays. That's why you are laughing. We're not laughing at different languages or cultures, we're laughing at the banality of the situation and Tates character acting so over-confident in a situation she obviously can't handle. Comic relief used to be a thing, and we all enjoyed it. It is not mean spirited.
That was made back in 2005 - no way in hell it would get made in 2022
The Chinese lady apparently could not stop laughing during this and they had to film again and again and again. I am English and white and laugh at myself all the time.
Japanese
No, Chinese. Japanese sounds completely different (I live in Japan), and she has a Chinese flag in front of her.
Let's be honest chinese sounds completely different as well! And you don't see the flag, at least not in the clip he's playing!
@@majpanik Tonally it does not sound totally different at all, at least compared to Japanese, which has a cadence not dissimilar to Italian.
@@gentlemanjim480 chinese doesn't sound like "bar chick a wahh" and neither does Japanese, its a pisstake for gods sake. And FYI there is no flag represented in front of the three people who are not white so this mythical chinese flag you've seen doesn't exist.
Watching from Botswana, love it!!! Please do more of her.
This is funnier when you remember that recent story where a translator for deaf people in America pretended she could sign when she certainly could not
You know the best part about this. Most of the shots filmed from behind the foreign representatives had them laughing during the whole thing. Apparently the Chinese part was the hardest to film.
The behind the scenes was a classic!
Oriental Lady needed 11 takes:)
Yes the Chinese lady couldn't stop laughing 😂
Without a doubt you HAVE to see Catherine Tate's "Nan" character an extremely offensive swearing old lady and her other characters are awesome too, but would say "Nan" is the most popular. GREAT reaction btw King Boomer. :) Also one of the big UK female comedians is Sarah Millican particularly her "Men vs. Women" skit. :)
Yes definitely do nan so funny and a fair few of them and the show is called the Catherine tate show lol
"David Tennant is Catherine Tate's English Teacher" is my absolute favourite clip of hers. Helps a little if you've seen Dr Who but great even if you haven't. Especially when she raps Shakespeare. Please react to it!
Helps alot to have seen doctor who, especially the series where Tennant was the Doctor and Tate the assistant.
I love that one I'm a huge Doctor Who fan so I got every bit of it.
@@jamessargent9981 does she actually speak different languages
Bob Mortimer, Would I Lie to You? You won't regret it. :)
Americans always get confused with her Spanish impression. In the U.K. we are much more used to Spanish speakers from Spain as opposed to South America. In Spain, the letters C and Z are pronounced as “th”. So a beer is ‘thervetha’ whereas you will hear ‘servesa’ from Mexicans/Cubans etc. They even add a ‘th’ to the end of Madrid and pronounce it Madreedth
@@thecorruptversionI totally understand. That's why I find it funny when Americans hear an English accent they claim it sounds weird or that they can't understand what's being said.

This is one of five "I can do that girl" sketches in the show. This just happens to be the funniest. Others are her being able to play tennis, curling, dance salsa and play the drums. It's amusing watching Americans react to this compared to others, the Spanish, Indian and African one they always hold back their reaction, but the Italian......always gets a belly laugh. Compare that to reaction from other nationalities, or even British where every nationality gets a full laugh - goes to show where countries find humour differently. Ie, us Brits are laughing at the absurdity of her translation skills, not at the language she's actually trying to translate, which seems to be what the American reaction videos are laughing at.
She's very funny and apparently she's really clever and can speak quite a few different languages
apparently, the black guy during the rehearsal lunch break said to her that he had a special sandwich order and the one given to him and he said " this is not my sandwich
I read that it took ages to film apparently because the Chinese lady kept on laughing so much
Heya KB.
When you do more Catherine Tate, make sure to ALWAYS have Miss Callie with you. She will LOVE them!
That was the funniest thing I have seen in ages!
Also French and Saunders, their classic movie spoofs are excellent 🤣
Love Catherine tate definitely should do the nan character
I would highly recommend you watch Victoria Wood doing 'The ballad of Barry and Frieda'. it's just too funny. very British and very funny.
Great reaction! The show with Catherine Tate in it, is called The Catherine Tate show! 😉 She's a legend here! That sketch could seem racist, but to us Brits it's just a laugh.. we're always the first to 'take the piss' out of ourselves and then others.. just bants!
It's a joke on Tate's character being so eager to push herself forward, despite her lack of any ability, and be useful to the manager that she keeps volunteering for tasks, and he rather foolishly lets her.
She always ends up making matters much worse.
This sketch keeps being picked up and interpreted that she's being deliberately racist.
Apparently, when Catherine got to the Asian woman, they had to do a bunch of takes because the Asian woman couldn’t stop laughing.
There was some extra material on the dvd's where she said that it was really difficult for her to keep a straight face during this sketch because one of the actors who was supposed to look really angry was cracking up when not on camera.
I’m a multilingual translator but I can affirm I would do the EXACT same thing in that kind of forced situation 😂😂
One of the funniest skits I’ve ever seen!!! 😂😂😂😂
This was Catherine Tate's best sketch - hilarious
Catherine Tates character nan is brilliant 👏
The Christmas party at the village hall, with Charlotte Church and the guy with the metal prosthetic hand.
It's The Catherine Tate Show. it's a sketch show great characters to check out are: Nan , Derek, Gay Son, Lauren, Northern Couple, to name a few. Also, Catherine Tate Meets The Queen, this made national news. Released last week in UK cinemas her most popular character, Nan The Movie. A female stand-up comedienne to check out is Sarah Millican.
Derek... Who me dear .....
@@thekinaton How very dare you!
@@CrazyInsanelikeafox lol
Our John’s a gay man now
@@thekinaton I worked with a guy just like Derek. He used Botox, and if you asked his age he just said the year he was supposed to be born in. If you said he was gay he denied it but it was as obvious as the nose on your face.
'The Catherine Tate Show' Catherine is a massively talented writer and comedian. very funny indeed. Her most well loved character is 'Nan' Brilliant stuff. you'll love Nan.
Look into Catherine Tate being Lauren a 15 year year-old schoolgirl really good! Probably her first impression which got her known. 😂
Catherine Tate's character " Nan " will be your viewers favourite to see your reaction to. Good news is " NAN " the movie is being released soon 👌
"My Son Is Gay" is a good one, and you two would like her " Nan " character.
Try French and Saunders for female comedy mate.
Callie would like them.
Jennifer Saunders is the writer and creater of" Absolutely Fabulous" and is a wonderful series.
Great channel mate.
The Vicar of Dibley is funny but it might not travel so well.
Ah, great stuff. Also check out the "John, he's a gay man now" sketch... All that pent up Northern Irish bigotry ripped to sheds. Lucky enough to have seen her play Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing. A very funny talented lady.
As others have recommended for straight forward stand up: Sarah Milligan is hard to beat. You might struggle with her Geordie accent but she's brilliant all the same.
Sarah Millican, Milligan was Spike.
@@colinp2238 ah, the vagaries of the latest auto correct algorithms.
She does a couple of little sketches as an American girl. If I remember correctly they are titled "Valley Girl".
She was also companion to Dr.Who for two seasons around 2008.
The butt of the joke is an office girl that really thinks she can translate and doing a good job :)
The only racism there is what people want to see. Also those actors ( especially the chinese woman ) were in total stitches trying to do that sketch
Pretty sure if they were offended they would never have done it.
As a swede. i can confirm she nailed it
Absolutely Fabulous. Great show.
Mr King Boomer - you took the words out of my mouth when you said you should have had Mrs Queen Boomer watching alongside with you. YOur reaction is so hilarious and I know it would have been off the charts seeing both of your reactions 🤣 x
The Italian and Indian thing fucking floored me mate,I`m Welsh but have never been a fan of her`s until now 🤣🤣
Catherine tates NAN is fecking amazing
The best thing about Catherine's comedy is that she isn't afraid to make fun of herself, as much as she makes fun of everyone and everything else.
Don't forget you haven't done Frankie Boyle Audience annihilation part 2 yet. Its just as funny as the first m8 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇺🇦
The flags... What's all that about?
Anything from Catherine Tate is wonderful. I've watched most of her show alone. It's great to see another person reaction to her comedy
You did not just say my ancestors are Italian 😭 so half my blood is, most American thing to say ever 😂 no hate it just made me giggle love your videos 👏🏻
Yeah, it is a weirdly unique American thing. Claiming other nationalities through ancestry. Everyone in the world has mixed ancestry. But for some reason, Americans are obsessed with it. If you are born and raised in the US then you are an American. They don't seem to know the difference between nationality, ethnicity and ancestry. What got me was him saying that he can make fun of Italians because he is part Italian.... it doesn't work that way AT ALL🤣 Not many Americans are first or even second generation immigrants nowadays but they latch on to it.. very strange.
@@kimpixiewinkle6923 Wow a lot of assumptions there! We know what those things, nationality etc., are. We also know the environment we were raised in. And, by the way, we can't talk without our hands 😂. The only weirdly strange things are the insults you are flinging.
The African man said - during lunch break - "this is not my sandwhich" - so Catherine through that in, you see him starting to break. Lol Spanish people speak with almost a lisp.
One of the finest British comedian's 🥰 nan is her best
The Catherine Tate Show is the name. Nan is the best of the show
Love your UK reaction vids mate, I laugh more at them watching you watch them than when i watched them my self
Mrs Taylor is awesome..
You could see the very last guy was trying not to laugh lol!
CT is unique..watch more of her!!!!
I’ve watched Catherine Tate for years…love her. She starred in doctor who as well
I grew up with her in the 70 s ,absolutely took the UK by surprise ,we love her ,she's the best ever .watch the Catherine Tate show ,there's loads of them ❤
This is from the Catherine Tate show , it's a comedy sketch show with different characters . Catherine is well known in shows like The Office and Dr Who .
I have all three seasons of the Catherine Tate Show and I re-watch them all the time. It's funny as fuck all!

Catherine Tate doing Nanna is the best
You should what Catherine Tate... I'm too drunk. Legend.
You gotta check out her character Lauren...” am I bothered” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 you can find her on the Catherine Tate show
Yes without a doubt you have to watch her Nan ( Grandmother ) impersonation. She is hilarious 😆. The show is the Catherine Tate show
She is brilliant
This was a long time ago , i don’t think she’d get away with it now, even in the irreverent UK 😬🤣
Yep, that’s our Katherine Tate 🤣🤣👍
Catherine tate show nan at the council is funny also the hospital
It's called the Catherine Tate show. I recommend you fall down that rabbit hole. You're going to love it
that was the catherine tate show. full of sketches with diff characters. if u liked this one try her nan sketch - ugly baby.. bloody hilarious!! that and on a totally diff note tim minchin - prejudice (that one never fails to entertain lol)
Yep, Catherine Tate series with character ''Nan Taylor'' and her Grandson
I’m English and proud, but the way we speak to foreigners is hilarious, and I’ve done it myself.
You ask them something in English, they spread their arms with a puzzled look on their face,we then proceed to say the same thing, but this time,we slow it down and shout each word.
Said foreigner walks off bemused.
We LOVE to laugh at ourselves.
Or you ask them in a broken version of their language and they respond in perfect english
Years ago I was on a bus in Portsmouth, waiting for the other passengers to get on. A foreign lad, possibly eastern European, got on and spoke hardly any English. He and the driver weren't understanding each other, so an old English bloke gets up and goes to the front of the bus. Then SHOUTS at the lad, "where do you want to go", as though increasing the volume would be the answer. It really was like one of those old comedy sketches.
What is even funnier and self deprecating about this is that we British are so notoriously monolingual.....Catherine Tate is a comedic genius on the level of Ricki Gervaise. We love here!
This is a wonderful clip to start with - so funny!
This never gets old 🤣
This show is just called the Catherine Tate show but her best characters in it is they the grumpy sailor mouth granny and the chavvy teenager! You have to watch little Britain too the best characters in that are the man in the wheelchair the mouthy teenager, there's SO many, you have the same senses of humour as me so you'll will love it!
Nans character is the best...
Nan the movie just released in the UK LOL.
That episode cracked me when I saw it too.
Nan by Catherine Tate.. everyone will say it but it is funny..
He hasn't discovered Nan yet. Looking forward to that!
Catharine tate as grandma Taylor has got to be her most funny and offensive skits, let alone she now has a movie of the character..... am i bovvered
What really cracks me up here is that the African guy so nearly loses it but what’s funnier is that Catherine later revealed that this took a myriad of takes because the Chinese lady kept Lodi g it!! She just couldn’t keep it together! 😆
Check out: catherine Tate - Lauren - French lesson.
And Lauren Cooper meets Tony Blair.
Nan is the best character, all the best mate 🏴
When I saw you laugh at the first one I thought to myself " you better brace yourself for the rest " 🤣
Catherine Tate doctors or hospital is a very good one ! Feat her nan character which should be getting a movie soon
British comedy is the top of perfection lol
It didn't stir up hell.
Comedy was permitted back then.🙂
Try Catherine Tates Shitake Mushrooms. Here they sit on a sofa and discuss their most recent encounters whilst visiting relatives and friends. She is one funny lady.
Nan and Lauren are 2 of her best characters. Lots of stuff on you tube and clips on the Graham Norton show. Good luck!!
HI king! I'm Italian(100% and living in Italy) and hearing you say my blood is Italian made me cry! don't apologize, be proud.
Mrs merton caracter played by the late caroline aheren ! Where she interviews celebs! Hilarious!
Its taking the piss out of us too😊😅😂
Funnily enough named "The Catherine Tate Show"
Your reaction makes it twice as funny 🤣🤣
Fantastic , just found you I am in Sheffield North England , have a look at The Catherine Tate show , especially The Nan character x keep your videos coming x
Anyhting with Catherine Tate in her "Nan" character is hilarious. Literally any of it.
She was also in the UK tv series Dr Who (David Tenant) she portrayed one of the Drs many companions, although her banter was still amusing this shows a very different side to her acting skills, worth watching though.
If you want more Catherine Tate, you have to check out the 'Nan' character. Hilarious. 😂
Try the Ugly Child sketch.
The Christmas one when her daughter (Kathy Burke) comes to visit is brilliant.
another show King Boomer you may want to review is a british show called Little Britain. It has many different hilarious characters played by two of the actors.
"gay son" is great one of her's to check out. Also the nan character sketches, definitely worth checking out as there's a movie if that character about to release
