Listen mate, youre not alone. I've been through a bit of a rough patch myself lately. It's alright to talk about these things and the fact that you've opened up a little bit even in a RUclips comment section - shows that youre not bottling things up too much. A guy I barely know gave me a hug when he noticed I was going through some shit, felt a bit weird because a guy has never done that to me. It reinforced my faith in humanity and belief that at the end of the day - folk have the capacity to stop and help a stranger. I hope you're well pal

Bill Hicks once said, "People in the UK share my bemusement with the United States that America doesn't share with itself. They have a sense of irony, which America doesn't have, seeing as it's being run by fundamentalists who take things literally."
The American in the hat is comedian Rich Hall. He was quite famous in the US in the 1980's then sort of dissapeared off the radar in the US and entered the UK comedy scene later in life, preferring how the comedy biz works over there. The other American is Reginold D Hunter, who didnt have a US comedy career. He moved to the UK and his whole comedy career was UK based.

If you love history you‘d really enjoy the British sketch show ‚Horrible Histories‘ which is all fun little sketches and even songs about the weirdest/craziest history facts. In its run of 5 seasons with over 4000 facts shown, they had only 8 historical inaccuracies. It was made for kids but it is absolutely hilarious and you learn a lot
The American on the show is Rich Hall. He was once a writer on SNL, and is one of the funniest comedians I’ve seen - I’ve been to 4 of his live shows. I heartily recommend his RUclips clips
The female host - Sandi Toksvig - was born in Copenhagen, spent her childhood in New York, spent her teens at boarding school in the UK. Has family in the Denmark the UK, and US. She has a Wife, a son and a daughter.
She’s extremely knowledgeable about a lot of things, she was always one of the best guests imo. It’s no surprise they asked her to host after Stephen left
Thought you might like to know that the man to Stephen Fry's left in the clip that starts at 6:50 is Howard Goodall, composer of the Red Dwarf theme tune (amongst many, many other TV themes)
That is the great Rich Hall who is most definitely American. His wife is British and they split their time between U.K. and USA. I’ve seen him live. He’s hilarious. I have no time for Reginald D Hunter - personal reasons.
Definitely Comrade vibes coming of the beard... Love Giles Brandreth (despite him being a Conservative) - he's very funny, erudite and he had a great knitting pattern book out in the 80's and I love it. He is known for his knitted jumpers. (plus I found he was great friends with the late actor Simon Cadell from Hi di Hi, who was his best man at his wedding to the beautiful Michelline)
Interesting thing is, British panel shows are seen by many comedians as a real achievement, not only them but some actors as well, so regarding comedians check out Michelle Wolf or Trevor Noah on British panel shows but the best is still Carrie Fisher who said she discovered those way too late and was loving it.
The first American comedian is Rich Hall - originally from Virginia, he spends his time half in the US and half in the UK. The other one is Reginald D Hunter. Originally from Georgia, he's been in the UK since the 1990s. "The Duellists"! You're right. For some reason I saw the image and thought "Barry Lyndon". Stephen hosted the first 13 series (A-M), Sandy Toksvig has hosted since then (and they're up to series V). Both very good.
If I have to choose between Stephen an Sandi, I have to go with Stephen. because he's Stephen Fry and I just love him. Sandi is a very worthy successor though. They actually had a woman on a later episode who demonstrated her ability to lick her own elbow, so I guess she's immortal. :)
Gonna say, to anyone who hasn't seen them, it's well worth looking up the documentaries Rich Hall has done for BBC 4 over the years - originally they were all based on movies and cultural depictions of regions or themes, such as the Deep South, Texas, California, Native Americans, Road Movies, but the last three were phenomenal: Presidential Grudge Match (history of US election campaigning), Working for the American Dream (basically the story of the "Dream" and US Labour/Industrial history), Red Menace (Nuclear Bombs and the Cold War).
Well first off, from one history nerd to another, very impressed and proud of your correct guess on the matter of the end of democracy in Athens, that was an excellent display of knowledge. Second, Stephen Fry is the original and iconic host of the show, and will always be my favourite, but of all the people they could have chosen to replace him I don't think they could have made a better choice than Sandi Toksvig, because she is excellent and has kept the show going for as long as it has. Third, yes, if you've never seen Rich Hall before, find some videos of his because he's very funny. He's American, but lived in the U.K. and was on a lot of panel shows in the early 2000s, super cool dude, haven't seen him on telly in ages. Fourth, please continue with the QI reactions. I used to watch and re-watch QI so much but it's actually been ages since I've seen a lot of these old clips, and really been enjoying watching them again with your reactions thrown in. And fifth, just hope you, Queen Boomer, the Princess, and everyone reading this is having a great day. Peace.
This is how you would do quite well on QI. You don’t necessarily get points from getting the answer correctly, most of the time everyone gets the answers wrong and often everyone’s in a minus score. However, you get the biggest score by telling the presenter something quite interesting, much like you just have.

@@hiramabiff2017 Well, Sandy earns only 40% of what Fry was paid for the same job of hosting the panel show, so technically she should have kept only 40% of the viewers. And the ratings went from an average of 7.3 in Stephen's time to an average of 6.7 in Sandy's time. Good enough for me and the Beeb, hence why this show is still on.
the short clip 'Qi Sandi and Alan get too close' has a very interesting moment, though. And Victoria Coren Mitchell's reaction on that moment is hilarious.

The billiard ball duel remnds me of the duel twist David & Goliath; one slingshot rock thrown hits the mighty giant right in the forehead! So yep - maybe even if he'd used a billiard ball David would have had the same result!
Rich Hall has made some outstanding documentaries. Well worth checking out. Reginald D hunter made a superb programme about returning to the deep south. Again worth checking out. They both get UK humour.
The Duellists! Ridley Scott's first film! Based on a Joseph Conrad short story! Sorry about all the exclaimation marks but it is a small jewel of a film.
At 19:14 about the Aztecs.... Is it somehow possible the Spanish are making this "cruelty " up themselves and then have a reason to say: " Hey, if you are so creul to your kids, we have conquer you, kill you, give you European deceases and take all your gold!" 😮 It has been done before you know...
From what I've read about the Aztecs and the Spanish in that time in history, I think both peoples had cruel practices that they justified through religion. The accounts of Aztec culture that were written by Spaniards should definitely be taken with more than a few grains of salt, but there was probably a kernel of truth in there, exaggerated for dramatic effect. I wouldn't claim to be an expert, but from what I've read, the Aztecs were considered harsh and violent by other indigenous people at the time. Much like Europe had a multitude of peoples and cultures, some of whom were more violent than others, the same was true for the indigenous peoples of America.
I've seen Rich Hall (the American bloke with the hat) live twice, he's very funny and entertaining - though you wouldn't enjoy his show, part of it is a country music performance!
I quite like Gyles but I do get the feeling that he is the embodiment of "Why let the truth get in the way of a good story". As you say though, there are definitely some that turn out to be true (like being given the original Fozzy Bear by Jim Henson).
The further you go back, the further they go back. American guy is Rich Hall - he did/does? a fair amount of tv over here + he's pretty good. Not sure if he's settled here. Billiard ball duels are only completed with the winer asking "Who's the daddy now?"

@12:32 Reginald D Hunter also a variety of fun turns on Qi, another long term staple on British panel shows. Both have done mildly absurd Travelogue series of travels around the US ! I am fairly sure ! Sometimes I remember stuff that didn't happen !

Reginal D Hunter’s niece did his hair for him to go on television and he promised to keep it like that. Rich Hall use to be quite a regular in the earlier alphabet episodes.
Heidelburg University has a long tradition of academic dueling to the point where they developed an elaborate form of (relatively) safe sword dueling that goes on to this day. @King Boomer Rich Hall is American, he's great. He was on SNL in the US and he has made many really great documentaries about US history you should definitely check out. They're on YT I think
That guy is Rich Hall who used to be on Saturday Night Live back in the 80's... which I found out just a few weeks back when RUclips recommended an SNL sketch with Christopher Reeve and I went "omg that's Rich Hall from QI!". Quite a good sketch actually. *edit now watched to the end* When Stephen left, I think I stopped religiously watching QI as I couldn't see it being anywhere near as good without him, but since then I have caught repeats of episodes with Sandi Toksvig hosting and have come to realise I was wrong. I couldn't say which I prefer as I enjoy both styles, but I suppose I have to say Stephen as he was the original. Also very impressed with the history knowledge there. I'm starting to disbelieve you when you claim to be just a muppet.
So true The Duelists was excellent the pointless relentless lust for satisfaction in honour expected in the Napoleonic era, Harvey Keitel and Keith Caradine played it top notch .
Always fun to watch, your reactions 😊 I was also impressed by your knowledge of history. I would like to note that when the Spanish 'discovered' the americas, they were already subjecting 'heretics' to inconceivable torture, and slow executions during the inquisition 😅
Very true every civilization in human history conducted torture and slavery even today around the world it still goes on. But that's people for you maybe it's human nature
Nice. Rich and Reg have done quite a bit of work in the UK. The insertions of the old world tended to be either punishment or remedy. Today, that sort of thing costs an awful lot of money. The Assyrians. Firm but fair. That might be an effective measure to encourage people to use public transport and park and ride services, I'm all for it.
Rich Hall also did some tv travel shows for the B.B.C. and he sure ain't Canadian being born in Virginia. He is very funny and his stand ups well worth a watch.
QI to me, feels like the host is the school teacher and the guests are the naughty school kids who cause havoc 😂 You definitely don't have to be educated to enjoy it, that's sort of the joke. It's brilliant!
Regarding history from the far east, specifically Ancient China - there's an Oversimplified video called 'three kingdoms' on this topic which is a great intro into it (and may be worth reacting to)
I agree about the horrific practice of inserting anything in the places you mention. I'm 65, and have always kept that place 'one way traffic'. It's my choice, and I'm entitled to say it. As far as I'm concerned, others are free to do what they wish, so no conflict there.

In a tyranny the mere caprice of an individual rules all. We must either put our trust in the rule of law, and bear in mind the value of our liberties; or else surrender to the power of a single autocrat and daily ponder our wretched servitude."
- Fragment 214 of Hyperides, tortured and murdered by the
Macedonians in 322 BC.
Well impressed by your knowledge of history 👍🇬🇧 loved QI and both presenters
Why the past tense? QI is still going. Series V now so not too much longer 😢
The ball strings makes them very socially advanced.
26:40 Balloons and blunderbusses was a duel option in the film Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines too.
Fun Fact! ..'The Hadrian' was a chain of supermarkets in the Newcastle upon Tyne area (in the 1960's and 70's), which is also at one end of Hadrians Wall!
King boomer your history knowledge is Remarkable 😊
The billiard ball duel remnds me of the duel twist David & Goliath; one slingshot rock thrown hits the mighty giant right in the forehead! So yep - maybe even if he'd used a billiard ball David would have had the same result!
29:29 They're talking about "Carry On Up The Khyber".
The American is Rich Hall ... I am seeing his show in 2 weeks :D
As a History teacher, videos like this are awesome!
Rich Hall has made some outstanding documentaries. Well worth checking out. Reginald D hunter made a superb programme about returning to the deep south. Again worth checking out. They both get UK humour.
History is like Boy's Own Adventure Stories (which was published in Britain in the 50s and 60s).........but for real. Fantastic subject.
The Duellists! Ridley Scott's first film! Based on a Joseph Conrad short story! Sorry about all the exclaimation marks but it is a small jewel of a film.
Great trivia if you didn't know "Mo The Bartender" from The Simpsons was based on Rich Hall!
That’s sounds possible good point.
Very impressed with your Ancient Greek knowledge KB
Ah the great Gyles Brandreth. An amazing dude... great stories, and some of them are true! (many are).
Newcastle upon Tyne still has drunks in the street, it's a popular destination for bachelor parties.
10:49 Rich Hall, great comedian and documentarian. And he is American
You can tell yours is a Florida bedroom, ours is quilted duvet, weighted blanket, Sherpa blanket, hoodies and a quilted throw plus if necessary hot water bottles and an electric over blanket, thermal curtains, can't wait for Winter? 🤔🇬🇧👵☕. Then a fan heater, halogen heater, electric fires, central heating and hat and gloves, imo? 😅
@10:50 Rich Hall - American comedian with a long history of absurdism on British TV, several turns on Qi, usually a fun watch
@12:32 Reginald D Hunter also a variety of fun turns on Qi, another long term staple on British panel shows.
Both have done mildly absurd Travelogue series of travels around the US ! I am fairly sure ! Sometimes I remember stuff that didn't happen !
Fun British film "Those Magnificent Men In There Flying Machines" has a duel in balloons among a bunch of other silly and bizarre events
Quality reaction king boomer, your history knowledge was impressive too
QI, (quite interesting) the mystery American is of course Rich Hall who was the inspiration for Mo the barman in the Simpsons.
QB: Treat me like a Princess from some historical period.
KB: Okay... how far back in History do you want to go? Because I learned, the further back...
"His mission was to find out: How the people is living, how many soldiers there are and all the things."
Great, now i have the urge to re-watch Allo Allo, and it was just a year ago i binged it last time...
You can tell a solid Germanic scholar by the scars on his (or in more recent years since the repealling of the intruder rule her) face.
2:40 Isn't this the "being de-bagged and radished" mentioned by Prince George in Blacksdder III?
@King Boomer Rich Hall is American, he's great. He was on SNL in the US and he has made many really great documentaries about US history you should definitely check out. They're on YT I think
That guy is Rich Hall who used to be on Saturday Night Live back in the 80's... which I found out just a few weeks back when RUclips recommended an SNL sketch with Christopher Reeve and I went "omg that's Rich Hall from QI!". Quite a good sketch actually.
*edit now watched to the end*
When Stephen left, I think I stopped religiously watching QI as I couldn't see it being anywhere near as good without him, but since then I have caught repeats of episodes with Sandi Toksvig hosting and have come to realise I was wrong.
Do you recognise Giles Brandreth from the Countdown episode of IT Crowd?
A great video, though one small point; Otto von Bismarck was challenged to the duel, not the one issuing the challenge, and he declined.
You trying to lick your elbow has made my day, thank you boomer for you as always entertaining reactions
You're remarkably well informed for a Floridian man. Keep up the good work.
American guy is Rich Hall. From Texas I believe
He has a ranch in Montana and grew up in North Carolina. His Otis Lee Crenshaw character is from Tennessee.
10:55 Rich Hall Comedian from Montana, has a ranch there in the hills his dry whit is amusing but won't have you laughing uproriously
