The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", written by Richard Foster and published in the November 1973 issue of Road & Track magazine. The story describes a similar future in which increasingly stringent safety regulations have forced cars to evolve into massive Modern Safety Vehicles (MSVs), capable of withstanding a 50-mile-per-hour (80 km/h) impact without injury to the driver. Consequently, drivers of MSVs have become less safety-conscious and more aggressive, and "bouncing" (intentionally ramming) the older, smaller cars is a common sport among some.
Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart made several attempts to contact Foster during the recording of but did not have an up-to-date address and Rush were forced to settle for a brief "inspired by" note in the lyric sheet mentioning the story. In July 2007, Foster and Peart finally made contact with each other. Foster later posted on his website an account of their journey by motorcycle through the backwoods of West Virginia between stops on Rush's 2007 Snakes and Arrows tour.
Barchetta literally means "small boat" in Itallian, is the diminutive form of ("boat" or "craft"). In the automotive industry, the term is used for a two-seat car without any kind of roof. The proper Italian pronunciation is (bar ketta), although it is sung with /t/ in place of /k/ by Geddy Lee Neil Peart's favorite car was the 1948 Ferrari 166MM.
    Lyrics explained:
The song's lyrics tell a story set in a future in which many classes of vehicles have been banned by a "Motor Law." The narrator's uncle has kept one of these now-illegal vehicles (the titular red Barchetta sports car) in pristine condition for roughly 50 years and is hiding it at his secret country home, which had been a farm before the Motor Law was enacted. Every Sunday, the narrator commits a "weekly crime" of sneaking out to this location and going for a drive in the countryside. During one such drive, he encounters a "gleaming alloy air car" that begins to chase him along the roads. A second such vehicle soon joins the pursuit, which continues until the narrator drives across a one-lane bridge that is too narrow for the air cars. The song ends with the narrator returning safely to his uncle's farm.

A friend of mine was lucky enough to see them in Edm for Signals and he was in the front row right in front of Geddy. He remarked that between songs, Geddy's pre amps would just sit there quietly but as soon as he touched the strings the clip lights all went to 100% 🤣🥰

Neil really was able to see into the future. The Red Barchetta is actually a 2010 Kia Forte Koup like I have.
But on a more serious note, Neil's kick drum through the entire song is probably the best overall single composition of his catalogue. The alternating kick / snare flurry at 633 launches just some absolute monstrous jamming on his part through to the guitar harmonics.
The reason the entire song rocks and flows as it does it because they played live in the studio, looking at each other. They'd been on the road for 6 years at that time so they knew each other as players, so in the studio they wrote and arranged through endless jams, building the songs. This song does not exist if they tried to write it like they did in later years, separately in different rooms fuqing around with Pro Tools.
They couldn't pull off La Villa in one take, but the album version of Red Barchetta is a single take, recorded on Dec 8. Geddy recalls coming out of the studio and going to get a coffee and hearing on the TV that John Lennon had been shot earlier that evening.
They were never the same after they parted ways with Broon.

The Barchetta was a car manufactured by Ferrari in the early 60's, don't know if earlier. It's tubular design was what made this car unique. It did come loaded with ponies under it's hood (like all Ferrari machinery).
Neil was brilliant in constructing his lyrics to the brief history of this car. Finding it in his grandfather's garage, like a diamond 💍 in the rough, cleaning it up, and LETTING IT RUN WILD on the road, is brilliant and so tastefully done...... Give a SINGLE SONG over the last 30 years that is equally constructed. ONE??????? I can give you a few HUNDRED from the 70's! Greatest decade in music!
    Unequivocally..........

Good description. The motor law, as the song says, appears to be on it's way. Who knows if the internal combustion engine will become illegal, but we'll be getting cooked in electric cars.

The barchetta has full-width enveloping bodywork, in contrast to an early spider corsa, which may have cycle or wing fenders.[2] Later (non-corsa) spiders added more heavily padded seats, interior carpeting and a full windshield, items not found in the more spartan barchette.[4] Some later cars still called barchette were more well-appointed, following the trend of the later spiders and convertibles.

The Red Barchetta, an amazing race car and song by an amazing band named Rush. Like the song and the car, it takes you to a place where you are in the moment and nothing else seems to matter. Both were meant to be enjoyed for it's beauty and purpose, enjoy the moment. Always enjoy life and stay free. Just don't get caught!!!

The song tells a fictional story of a dystopian future when motor vehicles have been outlawed. The narrator is describing how he would sneak out of the city, to the countryside where his uncle still had an old outlawed motor vehicle that they would drive illegally. The chase at the end is describing some future law enforcement vehicle / robot that tries to chase him down when they catch him driving the illegal car. It's a great song, thanks for sharing!

The first car to be called a barchetta was a Ferrari 166 MM shown at the 1948 Turin Auto Show.[5][6] The car was designed by Federico Formenti at Carrozzeria Touring.[7] Giovanni Canestrini, editor of the Italian sporting newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, applied the term to describe the new car's original bodystyle.[6] The name barchetta has been associated with the open 166MM model ever since.[5]

I was hoping you guys would get to this song. In the late 80's I had a red 1970 Chevy Chevelle 454 that I used to cruise the neighborhood in and the rich kids with the newer cars (and the Philly police) would chase me, but never caught me. Your review bring those days back to me! A Barchetta is a "style of a car, not a make. Ferrari, Fiat, Maserati all made Barchettas. Great review!

No such thing as a best Rush album, this was their most commercially successful but Hemispheres was more technically difficult and 2112 their most iconic. My personal favorite is Permanent Waves but never would I try to tell someone that it's the best they ever recorded, some people like their hard rock Peartless first album while others will tell you their last, Clockwork Angels is Rush at their finest it's all in the eye of the beholder or rather the ear of the listener. That said Moving Pictures is a monster of a record and I never get tired of hearing it.

The Fiat Barchetta (Italian pronunciation: [ˈfiːat barˈketta]; Type 183) is a roadster produced by the Italian manufacturer Fiat from 1995 to 2006. Barchetta in Italian means "little boat", and also denotes a type of open-top sports car body style.

Barchetta, pronounced (bar-ketta) is an italian term for a small boat, a skiff. In french it would be "barque" (bark).
Ferrari had his first car leave the Maranello factory in 1947 and it was a red, V12-engined Barchetta, model 166 MM.

A Red Barchetta is a convertible Ferrari 166A built between 1948 and 1953. It had a 2 litre V-12 engine. It would likely sell for more than 1.5 million dollars today. They were $9000 in 1949.

Barchetta (Italian pronunciation: [barˈketta]) is an Italian word commonly translated into English as "little boat". The term originally referred to a small skiff used for recreational purposes. It is also applied to some items of clothing, as well as being used in automobile styling, where it describes a class of open-top, two-seat sports cars.

This was written in 1980 - 30 years before they brought in the "motor law" banning internal combustion cars by 2030. The car the protagonist is driving is a small, petrol engined, Italian sports car from the 1960s. He takes it for a drive which is against the law, enjoying the smells and sounds of the engine but is spotted by police patrol cars which are massive in comparison. He leads them in a race to try and escape them and eventually gives them the slip by crossing a narrow bridge which he can do in his little Italian sports car but the giant SUV style police cars can not follow. This song predicted the future we are now experiencing.
