This is the Canon Ivy Rec and it's terrible, but I love it.
But no, seriously, this camera is actually the best form factor of any camera I've ever used. I feel like Canon were onto a real winner with this thing. I can't believe that they managed to rpoduce something with image quality this bad. The photos don't even have that old digicam type charm to them sigh
Anyway, I'm going to hold out hope that they'll release a version of this sometime soon with image quality that at least looks like it came from a mobile phone that was manufactured in the last 5 years.

at some point that 2016 android camera quality will be fashionable. HOLD
hahaha this one is being put in the cupboard for the time-being, but its time will come!
Android cameras have always been good you just bought cheap Androids.
My first phone had this
You don't even have to wait. That video quality definitely gave me a similar nostalgic digicam feeling. I'd start using it now and be ahead of the curve!
That’s what I’m saying
2016 android cam quality will probably be a nostalgia trend in 2026
here's hoping!
GenZ thinks window XP is a vintage aesthetic. I find it quite strange
@@macaroon147simplicity
@@macaroon147It's because we used it as kids. That's all
Looking through a physical frame at real life to take the picture is an amazing idea
100%, gives me rangefinder vibes in a funny way
I can't tell if this comment is sarcastic or not ....and that scares me.
Don’t even look that bad, do we really need professional quality every minute? It’s the memories the photos invoke that matter
i thought this was a video from a much larger channel at first. great vid
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Agreed
Agreed
2:12 One benefit I see here is that the camera isn't doing any weird/fancy automatic upscaling or blending or colour shifting that modern phone cameras do
True
It's interesting that this is exactly my relationship with my phone right now. I take it out, double-click the power button (to enter camera mode), snap a photo and put it away without reviewing it. I just got rid of all the apps that distracted me and turned off most of the notifications and all sounds. Now it's just a really good camera and a toolkit with useful apps.
I'm heading the same way! Was thinking of making a video talking about it soon. Would be interested to know why you made the change?
yess, i keep a light second pixel phone for this. the auto mode makes great results at any point, take out snap, bam.
When he said, “…and it’s always available in handy situations…” I’m like…so is you cell phone.🤔
True, but it's still nice to have a dedicated device for things like pictures or music(mp3 players) so you don't end up with a major point of failure.
If for whatever reason you can't use your phone(no battery, broke it, lost it) you have things that can still back you up on the spot! plus a dedicated small camera is really helpful for saving space on your phone lol
@@bluemonster5235So bring another phone as well?
@@thedeadpoolwhochuckles.6852phones are so big and bulky nowadays, besides it has a clip and it’s smaller and more compact
@@thedeadpoolwhochuckles.6852 lmao
I think the bigger camera companys would benefit a lot from experimenting with a more lofi camera, fuji has found great success with their X100s, canon would really have great success with a version of this that had more "disposable camera vibes"
I would not say that X100 is a lo-fi camera
Ricoh gr's arent lofi but are also very popular
Agree!
Got one and it is great for my kids. They love it and have fun taking pictures with it, which is what really matters.
I can imagine this would be perfect for that!
The usecase I thought of immediately !
I know exactly what you mean. I hate products that I “want to love” because of some feature or form factor. I can see why you like that camera, I love the form factor, it’s so smart. But, the fact that Canon, a well-respected camera manufacturer didn’t put a good camera in it makes it hard to love.
I watched this video with my gopro on the desk and i can see her jealous about me thinking "oh, this clip thing is REALLY cool"
I don't comment often, but brilliant review mate.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Omg you're criminally underrated! The color grading, lens selection, editing, all is top tier!!!
I have had one of these cameras (in grey though, not that awesome green) and while "I" do not have a use for it, I primarily got it for my kids to use. They go to camp where there are no cell phones allowed, but they can bring a camera. Also this camera is incredibly rugged so I dont fear it being damaged. The cost of the camera was enough that if it does get lost, I'm not out that much.
that sounds awesome, i'm sure your kids love using it as well!
Fun review! I always thought about picking up one of these, wonder if they'd make a version 2
I wish they would, just make it as good as a phone and I'd buy one instantly
the videography in this is amazing, i love the bokeh in your camera! especially the color
Thank you, I appreciate that a lot, I've been working hard on it!
Something similar to this is the Fuji Instax pal. It has a tiny wide angle sensor, it produces photos that look like they're from a 2007 flip phone.
Wouldn't a gopro or dji action camera be the perfect alternative? I know it's not really what you're talking about, but it would definitely do the point and shoot in a strong weatherproof package with better quality.
I was thinking this too. Do those have a quality comparable to an iphone?
@@azul_rosales I don't know, I've never used an iPhone. There are probably multiple comparison videos on RUclips
I've actually got one, and it's my most used camera ever... going to be making a video on it soon!
Here's a possibility, do you think it would be better if you used one of those sticky filter mounts and threw on a pro mist filter?
Will they come out with a follow-up camera?
I was looking for something like this for quite a while - didn't know it exists. Too bad they screwed up the quality. The formfactor with integrated carabiner is very cool.
100%, would love to strap something like this to my pack and go bag some summits!
did you lok at that tiny instax camera from fuji? they have an absolutly tiny digital cam that can save the photos or link directly to an instax printer
Someone mentioned this and I am going to look into it, it looks really cool!
This honestly feels like the perfect product for me, if it had a tad bit better camera. As someone who draws, i get small inspiration hits in random places and sth like this would be so convenient to capture those frames as it looks lightweight and easy to carry.
Btw great video!
Does it capture 4K 10-bit video?
The format reminds me of the insta360 cameras, especially as they are even easier for just taking a picture as you don''t even need to frame with them as you can frame the 360 degree image later
Canon makes a few cameras which seem like great ideas, but the execution just isn’t there. The smallness and toughness of this make sense, but it just doesn’t seem worth the bother. Or something like the Powershot Zoom, which is essentially a digital monocular and and camera, provides a clever form factor, but the battery was garbage, it lacked WR so it wasn’t a go-anywhere pocket telephoto, and there wasn’t a way to force it to high shutter speeds for photographing things that were swiftly moving.
Damn, hadn't heard of the powershot zoom but it does look weird/cool! Yeah it's strange, they're the sort of things which could easily be ironed out in a version 2 and then the version 2 never comes...
Very entertaining review! Thing is though, the photos look fine enough. Perhaps make a special Ivy filter in CamerBag or something and you’re sorted?! Anyway, thanks for a great vid.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
¿Con qué cámara grabaste el vídeo? Se ve genial.
Short and to the point. THANK YOU
I almost thought this video was too short to upload!
I need you to tell me the set up of this dreamy video
Have you tried the Instax Pal? I think they're kinda trying to do the same
I have not... but I may be on the lookout for one now!
Brilliant vid!
Thank you!
More weird camera videos! Love this!
Thank you, plenty more coming!
i dont know about that camera but I loved your filming style and the thumbnail was amazing
Do you happen to have filmed this Video @ Hyde Park? I've been there in 2016, and the (admittedly blurry) background looks so familiar! (I have not watched this video completely yet) :D
haha not quite, but I did film it in a London park! they do have quite the unique look to them, one of the best things about living in the city
@@gabrielbailey802 Hehe, close enough! :D
I just remember loving all these parks there (Hyde park especially). Even seeing all these exotic looking birds quite surprised me.
On that not, nice video! Keep it up!
This is how i feel about my sony AS50. the photos look sharp but under-exposed and colourless. the other day, i took a photo of the bright yellow moon after sunsset but everything looked further than it did irl and it becomes grainy if you zoom in.
YT recommended this video and it was enough to subscribe to your channel. I think the algorithm wants you to make weird camera and fun gadget videos. 🙂
hi! on what lense are you shooting that little video? kinda look lile helios 58 to me! please confirm 💪🤟
it's not! it's a sigma 24-70 on a Sony ZV-E1 with a 1/8 pro mist filter
@@gabrielbailey802 oooooh OKAY! looking good, mate! Very nice bokeh and all
damn, the image is worse than a fully functional ~$100 Xiaomi phone
Yeah it really is bad…
That was surprisingly refreshing. After all these techno bloggers. This one is brilliant. Thank you
anyone remmeber the Flip Ultra or just the Flip video line in general? if you like this, deffo worth checking out
ohhh man what a throwback, I had a knock off Toshiba version haha
You are great at making reviews! Also, I wonder if in 20 years people will be nostalgic about 2016 android phone camera vibes. I hope not.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
haha you never know, but if they do, I'm well stocked
that was a great video! its so sad that the camera isnt either of those things you've talked about.. it would've been amazing if had the old 2000's digicam look, i would've bought it immediately but unfortunately its not. Maybe you can modify the camera and build in another older sensor for cooler and more desirable looks? would love to see stuff like that
Someone on this comment section said they were going to give it a try, unfortunately I'm just not smart enough to pull it off myself! haha
@@gabrielbailey802 that would be so cool if somebody actually tried that
Whatever lens you are using isso soft, i thought i was getting cataracts 😂.
Cool video. I had one in my amazin cart for ages now, was always suspicious of the image quality though.
the video footage reminds me so much of early 2010s youtube vlogs and especially horror series emulating those early 2010s vlogs, i think it would be a brilliant choice to shoot something similar to everymanHYBRID or marble hornets on one of these things
There is a woman-owned company called Paper Shoot camera with a similar product. It doesn't have a clip, but you can add a little strap. You can also change the skin on the outside. It is about $130 though.
It is very similar to that cardboard IKEA digital camera.
Also love the design, form factor and simplicity. I might actually get one, take all the guts out and try to fit something better in. Already got some ideas.
oh my word, this sounds like a pretty cool project!
@@gabrielbailey802 if i can pull it off, i will send you the camera to try and review 🤙
hardest part will be getting a reasonably priced camera to borrow the case from
Great video! What camera did you use?
Thank you! I used a Sony ZV-E1, shot in SLog3 and colour graded, elns was a 24-70 Sigma with a 1/8 black pro mist
have you seen the new instax pal? it looks like something similar
I have not! I had a look on their website but couldn't see anything similar. Which one are you referring to?
@@gabrielbailey802 will send you a link on insta, doesnt look like the comment worked
Interesting! Kind of similar concept, though I wish it wasn't a round formfactor. The bluetooth link to the printer is a nice touch.
I think you should check a Papershoot camera, got one and I love it
ooof been eyeing this for a while, going to try and find one cheap from somewhere like eBay!
Don't overthink this too much. There are great basic basic digital cameras that can be quickly enhanced with a carabiner and some accessory cord.
Hi mate! Hope you are keeping well.
Thank you!
I feel like you could bolt a carabiner (or half of one) on an actually good small camera pretty easily. 3d printing could work.
I've never got into 3D printing but the more I think about it the more I feel like I need to
Cool camera. Cool video. Subscribed.
Thank you, cool comment, appreciated!
There is 100% a 110 camera that gives you that user experience with nice film colors and grain.
small digicams seem to overcompensate for their shortcomings with heavy-handed sharpening and saturation. if they would let you dial that down they might produce more pleasing results.
100%! reviewed a drone recently that had a similar conundrum, surely would be a simple fix...
200 dollars is too much for that kind of quality, a shame really, I am in love with that form factor as well
We need to Kickstarter fund a good one of these fast
100% I would donate
I love all cameras!
all cameras matter
Wow this camera is my spirit animal!
I feel that for sure
2016 wasn't that long ago lol, there were definitely android phones in 2016 that took incredible photos.
I keep mine in my truck, I use it when I do not want to bring a better camera on a hike or out playing with the kids. It works well for what it is, I got it on sale for $70 so I am fine with what it is.
Check out the HTC Re! Similar concept
damn, now that's a weird camera!
In 200x Minolta did a Dimage series of ultra compact cameras with periscope zoom lenses. That was the stuff of dreams. Took them 2-3 sec to power on and take a shot. Overall footprint was about the same.
damn... time to start looking on eBay!
0:42 you mean like a smartphone?
I just remembered when i was yonger i wanted this alot
What do you film your videos on? Amazing grading.
Thank you, I appreciate that! It's all filmed on a Sony ZV-E1 in SLog3 with a bunch of grading!
Sorry you don't see the fun in this camera. Maybe it's based on what you paid.
When these were released I was watching the market trends And bought a handful knowing the prices were going to spike. When they did I either gave them away to friends or sold a few.
Less than $50 for mine has given me a fun,, and portable camera just to have for those *snapshots*.
oh I still think it's fun, just disappointed because I think it has such amazing potential!
Good video. It could be possible someone could recreate this camera with a Raspberry PI Zero 2 W and the RP Camera Module 3 (which has a version with no IR cut filter for color IR images). The image quality would be better, cost less, everything would be open source, and it would be infinitely hackable.
someone much cleverer than me needs to make this and I will give them money for one!
Homie had that camera strapped under his flannel gave me miklo vibes vatos locos for life
Maybe you will love HTC Re.
honestly yeah the quality's a lil janky but it seems fine for fun, in the moment pictures
now just hoping it's not, like, $300
A quick google shows me these are overpriced. They do have a use. I'd buy one for my 7 year old daughter if they were priced right
I did get this for a rather reasonable £32, but it took some shopping around!
@@gabrielbailey802 At £32 there is no doubt I'd get it for my kid
I understand... I love the Canon PowerShot ZOOM. For me, the perfect form factor to easily take zoom images. It is in theory easier to use than a monocle (due to image stabilization), but the overall execution is terrible.
Damn, didnt know about this. really like the concept. But the Imagequality really isnt vibing :(
Yeah it’s such a shame!
Good video bro ❤
Thank you! I appreciate that!
there is definitely a niche audience for the aesthetic of this camera's quality, personally i found it really cool
Hey, some 2016 Android phones were great. The LG G4 from 2015 had a banger camera.
I think I'm the only one who LOVED the Holga Digital. It got HORRIBLE reviews. I got it on clearance for like $20 in 2017 or so. I loved the lack of screen and the simplicity. Sometimes the photos were a vibe. I'm no photographer so I am sure they are "bad" even for lofi and my skill level (or lack thereof) but I liked that 1/300 pictures that looked cool. I should dig that thing out.
The quality of the pics look really good to me, idk
I hope you film your next video on this camera 😅
I feel like the average view duration would take a significant hit
@@gabrielbailey802 You're probably right unfortunately 😭 the algorithm is without mercy!
Personally I think the image quality is pretty decent! For all the random things I like to take pics of I could see it working very nicely, especially if it helps me save space on my phone lol ^ ^'
would be cool to have this but with a flagship sony phone sensor.
ohhh damn, now that would be awesome
“I need” it to be better than an iPhone camera for it to be worth taking with me
I can't see any advantage to using this over my phone camera.
Dude too much vaseline on your front lens
So, funny story, I actually found out I had Sony’s ‘soften skin tones’ feature on by accident, which has basically made all of my videos so far this year appear like I’m some kind of vampire, I’ve turned it off now 😅
the camera seems to be from 2011
it is indeed
2:18 2016 Android Phones took great pictures, Add cheap as a qualifier, and you'd be right.
the hole to see what camera is *supposed to* see i think is terrible lol
1:32 uhm… how about adding a small camera to a phone…… 🤔 that would be super convenient
This is a project that is definitely open-source manufacturing. Would anyone be interested in this?
retro insta360 go 3 vibes
hahaha harsh but fair
quite confused now
IDK, to my eye, they don't look that bad. Yea, they aren't stunning, but I think "terrible" is a bit overstating it.
Another canon camera that wasnʻt thought out
This idea is great, too bad about the execution. It seems like someone like DJI or Insta360 who have already demonstrated their proficiency in miniaturization could make something in this size range with a non-fisheye lens style, like 35mm full frame equivalent, and smash the current demand for digicams. I want a camera no bigger than my moneyclip that I can use for quick street snaps and off the cuff selfies and photos with friends, and it just doesn't exist. This is a CRAZY gap in the market, as the demand is clearly there.
There are so many gaps in the market right now it's crazy but I feel like no one wants to experiment
Throw those photos in a AI upscaler and they might become somewhat better
i like this camera
Get a rugged phone, that way you'll have one additional use.
