It's interesting that this is exactly my relationship with my phone right now. I take it out, double-click the power button (to enter camera mode), snap a photo and put it away without reviewing it. I just got rid of all the apps that distracted me and turned off most of the notifications and all sounds. Now it's just a really good camera and a toolkit with useful apps.
I have had one of these cameras (in grey though, not that awesome green) and while "I" do not have a use for it, I primarily got it for my kids to use. They go to camp where there are no cell phones allowed, but they can bring a camera. Also this camera is incredibly rugged so I dont fear it being damaged. The cost of the camera was enough that if it does get lost, I'm not out that much.
I think the bigger camera companys would benefit a lot from experimenting with a more lofi camera, fuji has found great success with their X100s, canon would really have great success with a version of this that had more "disposable camera vibes"
I bought a JVC Picsio camera in 2010. Barely used it. Put it in a box for almost 15 years, just like you said would happen with this one. Now, my six year old son uses it to make little videos. Glad I kept it!
I know exactly what you mean. I hate products that I “want to love” because of some feature or form factor. I can see why you like that camera, I love the form factor, it’s so smart. But, the fact that Canon, a well-respected camera manufacturer didn’t put a good camera in it makes it hard to love.

Wouldn't a gopro or dji action camera be the perfect alternative? I know it's not really what you're talking about, but it would definitely do the point and shoot in a strong weatherproof package with better quality.

This honestly feels like the perfect product for me, if it had a tad bit better camera. As someone who draws, i get small inspiration hits in random places and sth like this would be so convenient to capture those frames as it looks lightweight and easy to carry. Btw great video!
The format reminds me of the insta360 cameras, especially as they are even easier for just taking a picture as you don''t even need to frame with them as you can frame the 360 degree image later

There is a woman-owned company called Paper Shoot camera with a similar product. It doesn't have a clip, but you can add a little strap. You can also change the skin on the outside. It is about $130 though.
True, but it's still nice to have a dedicated device for things like pictures or music(mp3 players) so you don't end up with a major point of failure. If for whatever reason you can't use your phone(no battery, broke it, lost it) you have things that can still back you up on the spot! plus a dedicated small camera is really helpful for saving space on your phone lol
Love this. Have had my blue Ivy Rec for a good few years now. It SUCKS in most ways, but man is it fun and charming. Also the video quality (when set to 1080p through the app, instead of the out-of-the-box 720p) is shockingly decent, provided the light is alright. I’ll also say the colours out of it are pleasant for what it is. Great video mate

honestly depends what you're looking for, if you want actual good image quality, maybe a used rx100 could be the way to go? for me I've also been digging the vintage digicam look, so I picked up a Canon Isus and I love it!

I just saw a TikTok on the Pikachu version of this and it seemed like a crazy handy camera for when I don't want to bring all of my professional stuff, so I wanted to check it out. Very unfortunate that the quality is like you said, very early 2010s smartphone-esque. I was hoping for an older feel. Still really cool and handy, maybe there's something out there similar or maybe someone should make something like it!

the video footage reminds me so much of early 2010s youtube vlogs and especially horror series emulating those early 2010s vlogs, i think it would be a brilliant choice to shoot something similar to everymanHYBRID or marble hornets on one of these things
Canon makes a few cameras which seem like great ideas, but the execution just isn’t there. The smallness and toughness of this make sense, but it just doesn’t seem worth the bother. Or something like the Powershot Zoom, which is essentially a digital monocular and and camera, provides a clever form factor, but the battery was garbage, it lacked WR so it wasn’t a go-anywhere pocket telephoto, and there wasn’t a way to force it to high shutter speeds for photographing things that were swiftly moving.
Damn, hadn't heard of the powershot zoom but it does look weird/cool! Yeah it's strange, they're the sort of things which could easily be ironed out in a version 2 and then the version 2 never comes...
Also love the design, form factor and simplicity. I might actually get one, take all the guts out and try to fit something better in. Already got some ideas.

I want you to know that I bought the Ivy Rec based on this video. It may not take the best photos, but the philosophy of capturing the moment is more important to me.
This is how i feel about my sony AS50. the photos look sharp but under-exposed and colourless. the other day, i took a photo of the bright yellow moon after sunsset but everything looked further than it did irl and it becomes grainy if you zoom in.
small digicams seem to overcompensate for their shortcomings with heavy-handed sharpening and saturation. if they would let you dial that down they might produce more pleasing results.
In 200x Minolta did a Dimage series of ultra compact cameras with periscope zoom lenses. That was the stuff of dreams. Took them 2-3 sec to power on and take a shot. Overall footprint was about the same.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT CANON: What about this exact form factor but a slider (like a laptop webcam privacy slider) that lets you pick the VIEWER you use, and one has a wide angle lens with a similar fish-eye viewer, and on the other side it's a like 2x zoom or 3x zoom lens with similar viewer. That way it's still inexpensive, there's still no screen, and it's more univers-atile.
I understand... I love the Canon PowerShot ZOOM. For me, the perfect form factor to easily take zoom images. It is in theory easier to use than a monocle (due to image stabilization), but the overall execution is terrible.
I keep mine in my truck, I use it when I do not want to bring a better camera on a hike or out playing with the kids. It works well for what it is, I got it on sale for $70 so I am fine with what it is.
Good video. It could be possible someone could recreate this camera with a Raspberry PI Zero 2 W and the RP Camera Module 3 (which has a version with no IR cut filter for color IR images). The image quality would be better, cost less, everything would be open source, and it would be infinitely hackable.
I think I'm the only one who LOVED the Holga Digital. It got HORRIBLE reviews. I got it on clearance for like $20 in 2017 or so. I loved the lack of screen and the simplicity. Sometimes the photos were a vibe. I'm no photographer so I am sure they are "bad" even for lofi and my skill level (or lack thereof) but I liked that 1/300 pictures that looked cool. I should dig that thing out.
Sorry you don't see the fun in this camera. Maybe it's based on what you paid. When these were released I was watching the market trends And bought a handful knowing the prices were going to spike. When they did I either gave them away to friends or sold a few. Less than $50 for mine has given me a fun,, and portable camera just to have for those *snapshots*.
Personally I think the image quality is pretty decent! For all the random things I like to take pics of I could see it working very nicely, especially if it helps me save space on my phone lol ^ ^'
So, funny story, I actually found out I had Sony’s ‘soften skin tones’ feature on by accident, which has basically made all of my videos so far this year appear like I’m some kind of vampire, I’ve turned it off now 😅

Something similar to this is the Fuji Instax pal. It has a tiny wide angle sensor, it produces photos that look like they're from a 2007 flip phone.

200 dollars is too much for that kind of quality, a shame really, I am in love with that form factor as well
Don't overthink this too much. There are great basic basic digital cameras that can be quickly enhanced with a carabiner and some accessory cord.
I think I'm the only one who LOVED the Holga Digital. It got HORRIBLE reviews. I got it on clearance for like $20 in 2017 or so. I loved the lack of screen and the simplicity. Sometimes the photos were a vibe. I'm no photographer so I am sure they are "bad" even for lofi and my skill level (or lack thereof) but I liked that 1/300 pictures that looked cool. I should dig that thing out.

When these were released I was watching the market trends And bought a handful knowing the prices were going to spike. When they did I either gave them away to friends or sold a few.
Less than $50 for mine has given me a fun,, and portable camera just to have for those *snapshots*.
oh I still think it's fun, just disappointed because I think it has such amazing potential!
1:32 uhm… how about adding a small camera to a phone…… 🤔 that would be super convenient
Personally I think the image quality is pretty decent! For all the random things I like to take pics of I could see it working very nicely, especially if it helps me save space on my phone lol ^ ^'

So, funny story, I actually found out I had Sony’s ‘soften skin tones’ feature on by accident, which has basically made all of my videos so far this year appear like I’m some kind of vampire, I’ve turned it off now 😅
