This expired film blew my mind
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.19 часов назад
Today I've got my hands on a roll of film that expired 23 year ago, way back in 2001. It's not a premium film stock either, this is just a regular Tesco Colour film, and I was interested to see how it would perform! It was a bit nervy at times, but watch along and see if I managed to get anything usable from it. Subscribe to my channel here: tinyurl.com/yc4evr5w If you enjoyed this video and ma...
The $30 dollar film camera that always delivers

In this week's video we're taking a little look at the Canon EOS 300. This is a long overdue video of a camera that I've been using for several years now and which gives me some reliably good results every time I load it up with some film. And that's really my favourite thing about it, an almost guarantee of success when you use it, which with the price of film these days, is a big plus! Let me...

Welcome to another Film Simulation review, this time we're looking at Classic Cuban! This is a super exciting one as I feel like it's something a bit different from other simulations that I've tried. It seems to have a much more stylised vintage look, which can really work well for some scenarios. So sit back relax and check out some of the photos that I managed to capture! Testing every pro-mist filter

In this video we're looking at answering the question, how much pro-mist is too much pro-mist? I've got 1 of every strength of black pro-mist filter and I've put them all to the test. All example shots were shot on the Fujifilm X100VI at a 35mm equivalent. Big thank you to K&F who supplied the filters to help me make this happen. Scanning film at home shocked me!

In this video we take look at some of the shots that I got back from the lab and break down why I wasn't impressed with them. Then I try and scan them myself at home to see if I can get a slightly better result. The process was a little strange at first, but it's given me a lot of confidence to try this again with other rolls of film and see if I can't some good results. It's this kind of thing...
Real Film vs Film Simulation. Can you tell the difference?
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Месяц назад
In this video we answer the long asked question, how different is a film simulation to real film? I go through a roll of Kodak Gold 200 shot by shot and compare it to the real thing. This was an interesting experiment and one which really got me back into shooting film and enjoying the slightly more methodical shooting process, so expect more film photography content coming soon! As always, if ...

interesting !
I bought the X100VI because it is a good compromise between an SLR and a compact camera, from the size to the results, setting options, menu navigation and haptic setting options. Unfortunately, I find the fixed focal lengths a minus, as I like to shoot 28mm. However, for years I have only photographed point n shoot (35mm) analogue. So I'm used to it. Now I'm seriously thinking about buying this adapter, but it will make the camera even bulkier and heavier, which I actually wanted to avoid. Actually, I could have decided in favor of another Fuji camera model without a fixed focal length. Sometimes I'm unsure whether the fixed focal length disturbs me so much that I regret the purchase and then again I'm very happy with the camera. It's not so easy.
Still use my Pentax K1000 I got in high school in 1992. Things a tank.
What a camera!
Is that the Supersapiens Performance Patch on her arm 👀 I worked on the design of that thing!
it’s the Lingo blood glucose monitor!
@@gabrielbailey802 iirc we had patented that silicone ring design for the patch, but there was a partnership with abbott so probably they got access to those. fun to see in the wild! after watching many vids including yours, I ended up getting a x100vi yesterday btw :)
Any chance you can drop the link where you got the filters from? Thanks so much!
I just ordered K&F filters from Amazon, always found them to be cheap and high quality!
@@gabrielbailey802 gotcha! thanks so much. Last question is do you know the filter size needed?
Or i guess I am having a hard time understanding what filters to get specifically. (im trying to go for the same setup that you have)
Hey, it’s a 40.5mm K&F variable ND filter, and a K&F 40.5mm 1/8 black pro mist filter, I ordered them both from amazon and they attach to the front of the lens hood like in the video!
@@gabrielbailey802 Awesome! thank you!!
Beautiful work Gabriel, I have to admit that some of the "mistakes" that you pointed out are actually among my favourites 😉
Haha wow thank you, a happy accident indeed! They’re definitely distinctive!
Loved these. The greens and the brown colors came so well. Even loved the once which got underexposed badly
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed, interestingly those ones are growing on me too!
Great shots, surprisingly good for Tesco )) I wonder if M&S or Waitrose also sold their own branded film? I know Boots had their own film too...
Haha I wish! This isn’t any film, this is M&S film
The results are spectacular - some great shots!
Thank you! Was a big relief to see the scans coming back with an image
does this work on ipad?
I’m not sure sorry, I’ve never used it for iPad!
The ways the colors "degraded" is spectacular! It seems maybe some color sensitivities drifted apart leaving gaps in the spectrum (greens shifting blue and yellows and reds staying steady making a gap in rich warm green). The rainy grey days were a great choice as well as they seemed to help smooth some of the extra contrast from pulling the film a couple stops. Love your videos!
Maybe its actually yellow thats dropped out. Could be that the chemicals sensitive to reds and greens got less sensitive on the edges of their spectrums leaving a gap for yellow. From some googling it also seems like something could be happening with the yellow filter layer that separates the red and greens from the blue sensitive layer. Anyway lovely Sunday video and a reminder to restock on film for the holidays :)
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed the video! I agree on the film really shining, I think I got super lucky with how long it's been expired and how well everything turned out! Really appreciate the breakdown of what might be happening to the film itself to cause some of the colour shifts, it's really interesting to hear about!
where is it from? If you bought it
I did! I just got this one off eBay, was very cheap!
Awesome! Love the location and the vibrant greens
Thanks a lot, I appreciate that!
@@gabrielbailey802 you have me wanting to visit the Yorkshire Dales too now! Are they easily accessible from London?
Yes really not too bad! You can get a train to Horton in Ribblesdale, one change in Leeds on the way and then you’re right there in the heart of things!
@@gabrielbailey802 Thanks! Gonna try and plan a trip in the new year ☺️
Great job! Those look great!
Thank you, glad you liked them!
Thanks for this! This topic is of great interest to someone, such as I, who has a freezer full of expired film. I had not heard of that rule before. Two questions: does it apply as well to B&W film, and does cold storage reduce the level of overexposure required?
Interesting, I have read that storage plays a large part in film sensitivity over time. I bought these off eBay so I don't know how they were stored and took a gamble that paid off! I would have thought you wouldn't have to overexpose as much if they were freezer stored!
You know what, it’s definitely thinner my usual daily runner, so might very well be some fun.
It really is! Enjoy!
Nice and informative video! Keep it up!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed, will do!
I have several eos 300's they are great
Best value film camera for sure!
I literally just made a video about this camera! It was my first time shooting it and it's also my first film camera. All the points you have is exactly why it's probably my favourite camera at the moment, my fav part of it is how damn light it is! My main digital camera is the Canon R6 and my other film camera is the Canon FTb QL, both awesome cameras BUT super heavy compared to the Eos 300.
Haha no way, I’ll check it out now! Yeah the 300 is so light weight, so easy to carry, so many lenses available, such a good deal on eBay!
i farted into eoes 300
Nice video 👍🏼 thank you
Thanks for watching!
2:36 wait a minute where is this?? I thought it was Canary Wharf for a minute but it can’t be lol
it's Paddington central!
when you switch from stills to video, does the shutter speed change automatically(to the correct shutter angle), for example you shoot photos at auto shutter speed and then you switch to video, does the shutter speed change at 1/50? or do you have to it manually every time?
I think that would depend on your settings and if you're in manual mode in video, with the dials disabled, in which case I think it would just stay on the correct setting when you switch drive mode
Difference there at the end was crazy. This seems kinda crazy tho, but i love it.
Yeah I was not too impressed with those lab scans!
X Pan digital
ohhh lord, maybe one day! that would truly be the dream
I haven't found my dream camera yet but its probably the minolta one
no way, that's pretty cool too!
Good review. I got mine to do buildings and classic architecture like cathedrals. I took it to Spain recently on my X100 VI. It performed really well. Now I’m waiting for the teleconverter to complete the set up. All my gear is black to be less obvious in street work and when touring. I’m looking forward to taking the whole set up to Japan, Hong Kong and hopefully ancient Egypt next year.
damn, nice, hope you enjoy shooting with it! I am dying to go around Egypt and look at the ancient sites, enjoy your trip I'm sure it'll be awesome!
Nice video. But could you share the recipe!?
yes! link is here and in the video description! fujifilmsimulations.com/project/classic-cuban-neg/
@gabrielbailey802 oh! Thanks 😂
I am keeping my x100f! Thanks for your charming video.
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it!
_Finally,_ a RUclips photographer that gets it. The whole point of Fujifilm cameras is SOOC JPEGs. If you're just another RAW Dog stick to the boring world of Canikony and staring for hours and hours on end at a screen tweaking pixels and stuff that no one will ever notice. In the meantime, Fujifilm shooters are out in the real world telling stories with their cameras.
haha this x1000, thanks for commenting and being one of us!
Fantastic video
Thank you, I appreciate that!
About to purchase myself a GR IIIx... I have my Sony APS-C system for anything specific, but I can't wait to have something this compact for EDC. Doesn't matter how small mirrorless bodies are getting, the lens and mounting system just takes up too much space for it to fit in a pocket. I really wish it had weather sealing, and I wish I didn't have to worry about the dust issue.. but I think I can live with those things considering there really isn't anything else on the market that is as small while still having an APS-C size sensor and a super sharp lens.
You're 100% going to love it, great camera to fulfil that niche!
This tool is great for occasions when a client will produce a photo and say “I want it to look like this” , it really is a good tool and works very well as you said. Along with C1s focus on the end to end workflow of professional and commercial photographers this just makes it even more compelling. The times I have to use another editor are few and very far between nowadays.
100%, it''s been pretty useful for me in that instance already actually!
It is really quite bizarre that such an established camera company couldn’t, or wouldn’t endow it with at least decent image quality or “bad” quality with a pleasing look . I have a couple of little compact digital “tough “/“waterproof” cameras for that go everywhere job. An 8mp Pentax and 10mp Olympus and they produce far better images and are still pretty small . Canon seems to have been a bit silly and missed the mark here
take a look at the Espio 928, has the panoramic mode like this does, a f3.5-f9 28mm-90mm zoom, so it's slightly faster and wider.
oh damn, need to investigate this one, thank you!
I enjoy the option of switching in and out of the cropped-panoramic mode -- and in the 1990s it appeared on all sorts of cameras -- fixed-focus, single shutter-speed P&S cameras up through very respectable SLRs (Minolta Maxxum 450 and more). There were a few mid-range cameras where the mask was a manual thing to put inside at the focal plane, so no switching on/off during the roll (Nikon 470 was one, I think), so less convenient. But Yeah -- the act of *seeing* the 'panoramic' view inspires me to take shots that I probably would not in the standard aspect ratio (especially with the SLRs where I'm actually seeing exactly what will get on the film). Try shooting some vertical -- the results can be very interesting. Cheers!
I think it's so cool! I have ordered a specific panoramic camera now and just counting down the days until it arrives!
The Minolta P's does that plus it has the correct wide angle viewfinder, which is the most important part of a X-pan double. I never understood why that little beauty has not become more popular. Also I think the Fuji GW690 35mm film mod is great for high resolution panoramas.
I have a Minolta Ps and it’s a great point and shoot that purpose built for panoramic shots
Have I ordered one based off this comment? maybe... (yes I have)
cool vids I love theme please pin me wens your next competition?:)
You must be the first person I've ever seen lauding the crop mode so many point and shoots call "panoramic"
haha I love it, I think it's a really cool idea, even if it's a little bit of a gimmick!
Back in 99-04, my grandpa took some INCREDIBLE INCREDIBLE panos with the olympus 35-90mm p/s with the same feature. Blown up they were as sharp as they were in person. While theres room for error, done right, you get some great quality panos
I head it and I sold it 😢😢 I want it again, hope I find one day
damn, sellers remorse :(
Cool videos with some very nice photos! I've been using my phone with a 1.55x anamorphic lens and applying the XPAN filter user the OldRoll app. Would love to see a video from yourself doing the same and maybe a comparison with other methods of achieving the XPAN look without an actual XPAN? Keep up the high quality videos, very enjoyable to watch
This sounds like an excellent idea, will have to give it a go and then like you said, would be very interesting to compare methods!
Hmmm, I think at this point, I would probably get a cheaper medium format 6x9 camera and crop. I've got a pre-ww2 Voigtländer Bessa for that sorta thing.
"cheaper" and "6x9" don't really belong in the same sentence 😂 @delicatospagozo3781 has probably the most sensible idea with using a Holga with an insert to accept 35mm film with the width of a 6x6 frame
if medium format film was cheaper, that might be my next move!
A cropped 35mm point-and-shoot will never get anywhere close to a Hasselblad or even a reasonable 35mm rangefinder or SLR. Leaving aside whether then x-pan is worth the price tag, a better alternative than cropping a 35mm frame would be crop a medium format and get close to the actual size of an x-pan negative. Something like a Fuji GS645W. As @sven1reinhold suggests, crop the viewfinder to the correct aspect ratio and you'll see the framing of a panoramic. The negative will be unaffected leaving you scope to reframe the shot later (or you could mask off the film plane to only get the shot as you framed it, although that seems unnecessarily purist to me). You could even go larger, get an old folding 6x9 camera for about £50 if you don't want to mess with a £500 camera.
Sorry….Tape the viewfinder of your Compact and then Crop the Scan. I Dont See the Point of this…
I get the motivation behind the tape and crop, but I feel like it's an inauthentic method of getting the medium. The tape won't line up perfectly with the image, and the crop means that you're reformatting in post anyway, which I think defeats the purpose!
minolta ps
it's in the mail
How about the Holga 120 PAN? Granted, it's not 35mm and it's plastic-y AF, but it takes surprisingly decent panoramic shots for the price.
I like the idea, will probably look to pick one up at some point!
Great review. Care to share the film simulation you used? Tia
thank you! it was Reggie's Portra
Nice video. I think you also benefit if you underexposed an image. Because my lab scanned a very dark image, and then the scanner tried to pull the shadows up, intruducing damn digital noise! But here you can expose for shadows plus use lowest iso.
interesting, wouldn't that jeopardise the whole image thought if you underexposed? underexposed film isn't normally great when it comes to image quality!
That is literally fuij xe with 18 55 lol
