- Don't get it twisted, we LOVE the Philippines... BUT over the past week we've had to deal with the hardest thing so far since arriving here in August. And it just so happens that the hardest thing is the ONE THING we HATE here in the Philippines.

I believe castration is expensive in the Philippines, so much so that irresponsible pet ownership is also a contributing factor why tons of stray animals wander the streets of the country.
It can be. We’ve seen a few places that provide spaying services for free every so often but obviously understand that’s an expensive thing to do repeatedly. I think if the spaying side can be more spread perhaps by the government the stray numbers will improve

Rescue x Adopt x Spay/Neuter
First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH for nursing Lily 🧡🐶🧡. She is such a sweetheart! I love animals too and yes, strays are a huge problem here. Not just dogs but cats as well. My cat was a stray too, and i am also feeding 2 others. And these are just from my neighborhood!
What the government should really do is to spay and neuter them esp cats coz they multiply so easily. (I had a cat when i was a kid who was always getting pregnant, lol). But i guess the government just doesn't have enough funds for that. I mean let's face it, we have many beggars too in the streets esp here in Metro Manila. If the government couldn't help (all of) them, then much less these strays. Anyway, at least you guys, and Jonathan, were able to help some of them. So again, thank you! And i hope you find a good loving home for Lily like what Jonathan did for the kitties. 😻

Reason being is that due to poverty, people in our country look after their own empty tummy first before looking after animals... it's a sad reality here in our country...

You're both good hearted people. I pray all people who are concerned about suffering humans and unborn children, are at least equally as concern for animals. Abortion and human abuse and lack of care is cared about less than concern for animals. Let's be concerned much for both. But what about concern for rats, insects and bacteria? They're living things too right? What's your moral theology?

Sadly that’s the reality of things. Street dogs can either be taken to dog pounds or be allowed to roam free and fend for themselves. When taken to dog pounds, you know what happens next, right? One could argue which option is more humane but either way, most dogs in the Phils will not live the ideal westerner life.
We know what happens at the pound which is why we didn’t ignore lilys cry for help. If we didn’t help her she would’ve died there on the road eventually or at the pound. There is definitely a conversation to be had around when a dog should be put to sleep but we think the stray dogs here could be more under control if there was a mass spaying program put out
Because in Phil esp province area we just give dogs freedom to play outside, that's why you see dogs ouside, sorry lily get well soon.
We like seeing dogs outside playing but we see dogs tied up outside houses a lot. They cannot be free to play

I can hear from your voice Dion that you are hurting for Lily. I couldn't agree more that my country has a big problem on stray dogs. There are many non-government organizations who offers spaying and neutering for free of charge, or a little donation, yet many dog/cat owners are still irresponsible and didn't want to take the initiative.
It’s heartbreaking and we would really love to keep her but it makes travelling so hard if we have a dog😞 we’ve seen many wonderful organisations offering the spaying service for free but it’s surprisingly not as popular as we thought it may be
Owners don't really care of dogs to sad to say. Government must be serious in putting a law on this matter.
It would be nice to see people have some more support to look after these beautiful animals!
My grandfather save a lot of dog in the Philippines we have a big property they are very loyal until my grandfather dies but we still keep doing it adopt cat and dog back home we love dog and cats until this day thank you guys for saving lily

I've heard that stray dogs are also a problem in eastern europe. The country already have the laws on animal cruelty and responsible pet ownership and we are having an on and off spaying an castration program but with out foreign help we might not have the money for the programs. Many times there are filipinos who take in a puppy or a kitten but not prepared for the dog or the cat they will soon become and if they are not neutered their owners are also not prepared for the litters. Thats why we are having programs to teach people responsible pet ownership.
The programs are a good idea so that people can get a bit more education around caring for pets. It would be great if the government could do mass spaying programs more regular to try and control the pregnancies

What you are saying maybe true. But people are more important than dogs. There are lots of people who need help. It's sad sometimes that Europeans focused so much on animals rather than people.
We don’t think that’s fair - firstly nobody is more important than anyone else, we are all alive conscious beings in need of love and support - the difference is humans have plenty of other human beings around them to help, but dogs like this get abandoned and nobody cares for them at all. We just wanted to do a nice thing for her, it doesn’t mean we don’t think people deserve help too
I dont agree that people are more important than animals, that ideal comes from the Bible, but I do agree that many times, people will overlook people, for animals, it isnt truly our job to "take care" of animals, as the animals will survive on their own, but people are a different story all together, what about the bad treatment of people? There is more of that than you can ever imagine on the surface level, such as the mass human experimentation of the past 2 years, but that is another story all together.

Thank you! We’ve thought about it a lot and the problem we’re facing is it will be incredibly tough to travel with a dog. We’re trying to find someone who can adopt her and give her love here in Bohol. If it was easy to travel with her we would adopt her but it’s so hard

Yeah it’s horrible in the Philippines when it comes with animals. It’s sad but if you go to BGC it’s totally very different. People with no money shouldn’t have dogs or cats because they don’t have enough resources to take care of animals.
Or at least the government to step in to support the animals and people in the poorer districts

I applaud you2 for being truthful when you see things for what it is. When I moved here from the US I saw so many unacceptable problems that the 🇵🇭 have. They are very hard to fathom/comprehend. It’s unbelievably sad to see so many stray dogs and cats. I cringe when I see people throwing trash everywhere. Too many to mention but these are just the two of many endless problems. I hope that there will be solutions to all these 🇵🇭🙏

In the UK we have 0 stray dogs, it’s just not a thing there. We have many animal rescue shelters to care for dogs that have been surrender by their owners
I understand what you are feeling I myself hate some ofmy fellow countrymen even they take care thier pets here yet i noticed they tend to abuse them by putting them in a very cramp cage or so so short leash that the the poor dogs almost cannot move comfortably,that i rather see them free and roaming but that's the reality here in the Philippines most people can't really take care properly our own local dogs or even cats maybe becoz they are so many of them and it's costly to bring them to vets so they are just being ignored if they are sick or something. But I really thank you,Godbless your heart for caring and helping Lily you are one of the few foreigners that gives their time and care to our local dog in need of help,but I don't judge those who don't Becoz as i say even the locals here tend to just ignore them and deaf to their cry of help.

What I observed in the Philippines is that Philippine dogs are not well treated unlike dogs with breeds. Some houses where they put dogs just for security purposes. Protection from unwanted visitors.
Yes we have been told that by locals a lot of places we have been, that they are more guard dogs than anything else😔
@@TravelstoFreedom What is worrying is that stray dogs cause accidents to motorists because they sometimes suddenly cross the road. And the annoying thing is, the owners of the dogs are nowhere to be found. I hope Filipino people (not in general) will take care of their dogs and treat them as part of their family whatever the dog breeds.

Im from a country way up north. I met my Filipina wife in her resort in Palawan and she had a wonderful stray dog called Odjo she was the one take care of him bath him in the ocean and then shampoo in fresh water Cut nails and prepare food and water. He accepted me directly and my wife said he didnt do that to every body even Filipinos. It was a fantastic dog with such good maners . He even helped me find around town well atleast how to get back:) Odjo is gone but we will for ever remember him for the good times,and even maybe putting us together.. I am sure u guys will have only good memories from this to Salamat. And Im a follower now

You are 200% true and correct about the cruelty of many filipinos to dogs and cats, i myself here in my place experienced the same, i fed 2 dogs and 2 puppies outside my house that's the only help i gave to them, because i have no work or income. I always cry and get angry to people who abandoned their dogs and cats and saw them so pitiful wandering and looking for food and water in the streets. So many people here are cruel to animals. Shame on them!

Wow, that's so, so sad to know how bad it is there, guys! I apologize to my birth country for treating GOD’s given creatures like they do! I wonder if there's a Humane Society like here in the US where you could take Lily to be taken care of and get adopted. I give a monthly donation to ASPCA and the International Humane Society to care for and save these innocent animals. You know, when you spell “Stressed” backward, it's Desserts” and “Dog” for “God.” I wish that someday when I get a chance to revisit there, perhaps I can check out their “Humane Society.” My husband and I can't travel overseas because we have three precious fur babies, and we can't imagine leaving them here for months since we have that opportunities since we're retirees!

Most stray dogs in the Philippines live good lives. They're almost the community's dogs. They get fed somehow and that's why they hang around and mostly friendly to everyone. Also, some of them are not really stray. They go back home every night and back to where the tourists are during the day.
Yes we’ve seen a few dogs who look very well fed still sitting around restaurants looking for food haha
They are community dogs like feral cats. What they need is spay and neutered. So they don’t multiply as much.

Bohol must have a public center for animals (dogs and cats) just like here in Manila. You can go to that barangay or in the city to surrender that dog in the authority and they will take care of it. Thanks for taking care that dog. For info there are lots of cats in BGC but they are being fed.
We have been told by locals if we report the dog here she will be taken to the pound and put down, and all of the shelters are currently full so we are trying to find somebody to adopt her

Thanks for looking after poor Lily. What you say is absolutely true. A lot of folks here just don't give a shit about stray animals and can sometimes even be downright cruel to them.
Sorry guys if you always saw stray dogs and cats in our country, we can't control how they multiply and there's only few shelters or homes for stray dogs and cats but luckily there's a banned of slaughtering dog now unlike past few years or decades it's legal to slaughter dogs to cook but there is still some area or province slaughtering dogs to be there food like in BAGUIO and other cold weather part or higher elevation part of the Philippines .
kinda sad ngl. lowkey an actual crisis, there are millions of strays in the ph but not everyone can adopt strays unfortunately (it isn't economically viable for majority of the country, most cant even feed their own families). there are various programs tho (private and lgu) that take care and feed strays (all sorts of animals) but the animals reproduce exponentially bc of their numbers, there are spray/neuter programs that aim to control their population. its gotten so bad that my uni started adopting cats and doing spray and release programs (they even gave one a diploma when he got adopted lol)
I agree with you guys. Neutering dog is not yet in place as a law in the entire Philippines. In some areas, I know the government gives free neutering. I hope it will be remedied soon. I believe animal lovers are kind people. We love you guys 😊❤
