- Well I had to fish at least 1 KATS tournament before I left the Lone Star state! I was able to make it to Coleto Creek for the 3rd event of the KATs season. Over 100 anglers showed up for this event and the fishing was difficult for me. The majority of quality fish were post spawn and out deeper (which isn’t how I fished that day). Ended up in 19th place overall but still had a blast fishing and seeing old and new faces.

Man it got tough out there after the sun came up. But luckily you caught that limit early on. Not too bad for a lake you've never pre fished. Great video brother, there's something about your videos that I could just watch all day! I'm getting out there to Texas one day to fish with you man.

Greg Blanchard I actually got turned on to your channel when I randomly watched a LOJO segment looking for kayak fishing stuff to subscribe to nearly a year ago. The segment was top 10 kayak fishing channels to subscribe to based on followers and while you were not in the top 10 he noted you absolutely should be so I checked it out. Been following ever since.

Glad to see kayak fishing taking off like it is. I don't do it myself but I think it's such a great avenue for people to get into the sport.

man u steady catching them and I'm steady struggling to catch a couple!!! not sure what I'm doing wrong.....I was right in the middle of a shad pawn and cant seem to catch a LM
lol, i caught em' but they were small!! chatterbait, spook, paddle tail swim baits are hard to beat when they're busting on shad!

It was! The wind really picked up after about 10 am and couldn't keep the fish pegged. That's how it goes sometimes!

How did you pick your first spots to go to, since you didn't pre fish the lake? Also, what do you look for when going out and prefishing a lake??

I usually am much more prepared and have at least pre fished the lake once before tournament day. For this, I did a lot of map study (google maps and navionics). I try to figure out through word of mouth, YT videos, forums, fishing reports what phase the majority of the fish are in and from there I will pick my spots. So for this tournament I actually had my research wrong. I thought a lot more would be spawning so I picked certain pockets/falts off main creek channels that they should be spawning in. I used google maps to confirm any potential structure/cover that would increase probability of spawning. I also looked at the weather/wind each day leading up to the tournament and especially the day of the tournament to see if I'd be in protected water for the spawners. Wind was howling and my plan was to blind cast for spawning fish. Again, I had my research wrong and based on the results and talking to other guys most of the fish were post spawn and out in >8' FOW. The early morning flurry was a fluke because it was right before my first "spot" and I saw some grass I liked on a main lake point which is hard to go wrong by any time of year. If I was there an hour earlier I think I could've done much better as I believe I caught the tail end of shad spawn with feeding bass.

Nice! Prefish the lake at least once before tournament day and ELIMINATE unproductive water. Formulate a tentative game plan for the day and go at em'!

I was at the Coleto Creek KATS Tournament, I heard your name called, but never saw you. I would have said hi. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for posting them. Enjoy California, I spent five years out there in 1976 to 1981 in the Marine Corps. I'm not so sure I would want to live there today.
Hey Terry. Yeah, I knew my score wouldn't hold up and since I had to pack and drive to California the next morning I decided to leave a little early. Cali has been good so far, can't beat some delta bass fishing!
