    Extra tip - use the other half of your cut crate to raise it. It's lighter than wood and you already have it.

  • @WestRipStiker

    Thank you for the idea and design Daren! I just made one, but did a couple things a little differently. Firstly, I used a cut up cam strap as a locking latch, it wont stretch out over time as much, but it was a pain to install as I sewed the tag end onto the crate. Second, I routed the shock cord around the rim of the lid section so there is just a touch more room up top. One minor design flaw I noticed through watching a bunch of your videos, is that the top gets deformed from the pressure of the shock cord pulling the sides in, I didn't particularly like that, so I made a small square out of quarter round moulding, that just sits under the cord and is held on by the pressure. Finally, I used the upper sections of the top cut crate and used that as the rod holder spacers, which worked out better for me as I purchased some rod holders off of amazon that have a slight standoff where they bolt on, it also allowed my to run the bolts all the way through the sides of the crate to make a bomber connection holding them on. If you would like some pictures feel free to reach out!

    I've seen some guys take a cooler, and turn that into a storage bin, with rod holders and all that. I like the idea of using half for my lunch and drinks/ice pack, and a cutting board as a divider, then room on the other side for tackle bins. Once the lunch is gone, throw a few fish in there as well.

    One thing you could use on the PVC for the reel seat is a rotary tool with cutoff blades and drum sanding mandrels. You might even be able to use the rotary to cut the milk crate and drill the holes for the zip tie and bungee cord. One place I would look at for the bungee/shock cord is Paracord Planet as they have a large variety of sizes and colors as well as end fasteners and tools, one item to look at would be a fid. A fid is used for threading paracord or bungee/shock cord through holes and prevents the cut end from fraying as you thread it.
    I would go to a store like Home Depot to see if they have some scrap 1x4 for the spacer as you can sometimes get that for free.
    I was thinking of using a nut and bolt near the bottom of the pipe to help in holding the rod up and not put a strain on the reel itself.

    You are always going to have someone complain… I liked your project and for many… it is an easy and doable project that will work perfect.
    I asked the local Walmart and they gave me 2 new Borden milk crates. I built it basically the same (a few years ago) it holds 6 rods, has a 25 watt x 1.1 amph solar panel on a hinged mount over the area you have with shock cords and that charges my 54 amph Dakota LiPo battery during the day as I use my Newport Vessels 36 lb. Thrust salt water trolling motor as I fish both fresh and salt water… you can go as simple or as crazy as you want… the main thing is “you built it” and that makes it special… any lazy so and so can buy one…

    Great video! For those whp don't have the time or aren't skilled with tools you can buy a very similar crate from Flambeau. I bought mine about 10 years ago and it is still working great. The current version is named the Tuff Krate Premium #455TKP and retails for around $100. It only comes with 2 rod holders, so I added another 3 to mine. It has many holes and hook on points so the amount of additions is limitless. When fishing on my yak, I found it was hard to close the top lid so I added parachute cord to keep the lid from opening all the way. After watching your video, I also added the shock cord to the top of the top lid for even more storage.

    For this project I believe I’d just get some actual rod holders. I’ve seen 4-packs available for as little as $10 at times. Much less work, smoother edges, they’re slotted to hold spinning rods better, and they have raised flat surfaces for mounting on the back side. You can even get them in different colors too.
    If you do decide to make your own rod holders, nail polish remover (100% acetone) will work to remove the writing that is on the sides of the pipe, and if you use PVC (white plumbing pipe or gray electrical conduit) then it also takes the glossy finish off of the pipe so paint will stick better. It might work the same on black ABS but ABS is a different material so I don’t know.

    • @wendellfishing
      @wendellfishing  10 месяцев назад +1

      You could do that but they will be lower quality and I would argue the smooth edges. If you sand it down right.. it's a smooth as butter.

    Please use a flush cut side cutter so you don't leave sharp zip tie ends!

    Love this version a lot but one question. Why not use a long hex head bolt a flat washer to attach 2x4 to side of crate instead of zip ties?

    If you don't have tools, instead of spending $200 on a crate, man up and buy $200 worth of tools and make your own crate! It will help your natural testosterone production.

      Hell I got most of my tools from thrift stores, spend under 50 bucks on the tools. Also I used hinges I pulled of old cabinet with plastic spacer from left over crate for my lid.

      I mean most men over the age 25 have most of tools of required….. most men under the age pf 25 can borrow the tools from there dad…. Most other men can borrow the tools from a buddy….. if u don’t have the tools… and none of ur friends/family have the tools….. u are in no way a man living in America

    What's the biggest point and advantage of having the lid? I like the rod holder idea but not quite sure if I'd do the lid, im tryna keep my load out minimalist and light as possible

    • @wendellfishing
      @wendellfishing  Год назад +1

      I personally like the lid because it allows me to stuff bags of soft plastics, glasses, hats, batteries under the bungees really quick and access them really quick.

    Great walkthrough. Rather than zip tying the 2x4, just use pan head screws from the inside of the crate, would be more secure imo

    For those complaining about not having tools.....WELL, go make friends with someone who has the tools. Trade services, or pay a few bucks. It is not that hard. If someone need assistance in making something, all they got to do is ask.

    To avoid knocking out another rod and reel when reaching for them, I wonder if simply clocking the rod holders differently would solve that, versus the differing "fanned" angles? By the way, what they charge for these yak boxes is ridiculous, in fact, all yak accesories are over-priced.

    • @wendellfishing

    How many million milk crates have been stolen from dairy companies?
    Milk crate theft is a really big problem for dairies and stores in the US and costs the industry thousands of dollars every year. While the big boys might be able to suck up this kind of loss, it can have a very real impact on the smaller shops and dairies and it’s You, as the consumer, who will end up paying for it... I don't buy milk but I down thumbed this video anyway.
