Seriously. There are some very useful ideas in this video. Mentality is important, too, but literally EVERYONE focuses only on mentality when they make videos like this.
Hello ZeRo. I normally don't make comments like this but today is the perfect time. I was recently struggling to "Git Good" at Smash Bros because I lacked so much skill compared to the pros. Things such as Fundamentals, Reading Air-Dodges, Rolls. and catching the opponent when they land. It almost came to a point where I thought I would never improve. Thinking how I would have to go back to Local, play a few friendlies, pay the 15$ fee and lose in Brackets, then Losers. Then go home and watch the Stream of Neblous Gaming. John Numbers vs SomeDumbAss in Grandfinals. I thought that would never end. ( I even lost to a Mario who killed himself on the first stock by accident :< ) To return to the original point, I would then go home and look up guides and combos and basic fighting game knowledge of Habits. But this video may just be the insight I need. Thank You ZeRo. And to anybody else who chooses to read this. There are SO many Smash players and other fighting games players, trying to "Git Good"
Potato Guy I probably am. And we the same just like a thousand people, I will one day get first place at my local. EVEN if it's only a one time victory :D ( Then just keep training to get more )
Whenever I go to tournaments my movement is significantly worse. I'm missing fast falls, shield stops, simple stuff like that. I guess it's because I play online a lot but even when j just play on my tv at home offline I have no problem with my movement. I'm not one of those guys who thinks some tournament set ups have input delay but there's definitely something. I almost feel forced sometimes to enter doubles just to be adjusted enough for singles so that my movement is on point. Does anyone else have this problem?
Wow, I'm surprised you brought this up because I felt the same way about a month ago. Played a tournament and felt like there was input delay, and I felt slow and clunky. On top of that, I was forward smashing by accident every time I tried to do a dash attack. Now I'm aware of it every time I play tournament and do some hand warmups/friendlies beforehand to make sure I'm not making any errors and I feel smooth.
Zero is kidnapped. If you listen closely at 0:00 you will hear "so a lot of people have been wondering" CALL THE POLICE GUYS EVEN IF HE SAYS HE'S OKAY HE ISN'T, WE KNOW BETTER THAN HIMSELF, RIGHT?
This was actually very useful and practical. Thank you. You're actually one of my favorite players. I appreciate how respectful you are toward others. Respect for others is very important.
Bigdick Johnson His Falcon has taken sets off of M2K's pre-patch Diddy and Nairo's pre-patch ZSS. I'm not saying he should MAIN him, but maybe mix him in as a counter pick. Probably do better than his crappy Cloud lol :P
Zero this is why you're my favorite smash player. Its not because you're one of the best smash players but because of your content. Your humbleness shows through your words and it feels like you're giving back to the community by making these videos and its amazing. I really appreciate you sharing these tips because I want to start going to tournaments and I hope that I get to see you at one because you're my hero when it comes to smash
Absolutely. It's a big part of why fast characters or characters with a lot of movement options tend to take the most time to master (e.g. Fox and Marth in Melee; or Sheik, Ryu, and Pikachu in Smash 4).
Thank you very much for this insight Zero! All this time I have been training wrongly. I have been just trying to play Online (which most times ends up badly due to horrible lag) and against Lv8-Lv9 CPUs. Now I understand how lower levels can help you dominate the teching and different combos to try them out on actual people and improve. Thank you again and I will keep on practicing.
ThatWittyWolf the A.I is different than a person. With a person you can use a lot of psychology to make them think your going to do something. The CPU’s just don’t fall for those tricks. So I definitely agree
Very Helpful video ZeRo, I'm starting a training regimen, and I'm gonna start practicing hard today, took notes from this and will incorporate it in my training, thank you!!!! :) :D
to practice movement, i made a stage that's a box with a slightly raised roof, so the ledge is there. then, turn damage all the way up and spawn bombs. you can also practice basic movement and wall jumps in a stage like this.
Something that can really help if you are in college (or possibly highschool) is to start your own small smash community. In my second semester I managed to find three or four other guys who were interested or experienced in competitive smash and I eventually set up small tournaments. After around a semester passed we managed to gather a community of over 30 people (and it's still quickly growing) along with bi-weekly tournaments and a player ranking system, all just by word of mouth. It's amazing how many little groups of smash players are scattered around campus, just waiting to be brought together into a larger community. At one point we had a few crew battles and an entire crew of people who we didn't know beforehand showed up and joined in. This is mainly a thing for colleges, but maybe if you're in high school you can try to form a club or something. Either way, starting a small community helps a ton when trying to improve and enjoy smash, especially if there is no large existing smash community near you already.
There's another tip I can give, set the stocks to 99, the cpu on lvl 8 (not 9 because lvl 9s are cheating) and they're handicap to 300%. What you now want to do is NOT aggressively push your opponent. You want to stay in neutral when the game starts and when the opponent respawns. Your goal now is not to train approaching but HARD READS. Try to only kill your opponent through hard reads. At the same time, try to not get punished and let the CPU make the mistakes. This will both train your evasion and spacing in neutral and also your ability to read an opponent better
Not Ben Stiller "troll" doesn't mean someone who gets attention for posting a regular comment. "Troll" means someone who bugs people to get a reaction.
5:46- But there is an issue with relying on Online Play for practicing certain matchups, that being that certain characters, such as Yoshi, are massively underplayed. I do want to get into competitive play at some point. A method I have been using is simulating For Glory in an offline game (Two stocks, five minutes, stage selection at random Omega Form, a random Lv. 9 CPU as my opponent). I believe this may help in fighting characters very few play as in general. You do want to practice those matchups, since you never know when somebody is going to play as a character that is rather unknown due to a lack of usage.
Noob question i know but how do you jump so low and it back flips on captain falcon. I just started trying to learn him and ive never seen somebody do that. example 3:58
He is performing something called a short-hop. You can perform it by flicking the joystick (or tapping the x/y button) really fast. If you do it too slowly it will become a full-hop, or a regular hop. Different characters have different timing intervals, so some characters are easier to do this with than others. Some characters, like Cpt. Falcon, will do a backflip if they jump backwards. So ZeRo is basically short-hopping backwards (short-hopping and then flicking the control stick in the opposite direction of the one he's facing). You will definitely get it down with a little practice. Hope this helps!
Practicing throughout the night with a friend helps. I only have two problems. I only have the 3ds version and I live in a rural area where I'm confident no tournament s are held
Also, don't be shy about just playing even free friendlies with good players in your local scene, especially at smaller events. When I go to weeklies and biweeklies I always try to play with people who I know are better than I am, either before the bracket starts or later on after it stops being necessary for all of the available setups to be used for tournament matches. I get that a money match has a psychological element to it and makes it so that whoever you're playing against will play harder even if they don't really need to in order to win, but my philosophy is that a local match against someone who's good is almost always good experience. In my experience even the people who are PR'd (or close to it) are super chill and will play their main against you. Just don't pester people who are clearly not trying to play friendlies, or are actually practicing for a specific match because they're in top 3 or something.
Every time you win you meat that meat to reward good behavior till you get to zero's level. It doesn't matter if you're in a tournament dedication is everything.
I doubt you'll see this, but I just wanted to say Smash is the first thing in my life to ever give me the drive, determination, and energy to practice at something every single day, and your video will help a lot with that. Thank you.
The one thing I worry about is shield i need some advice because I practice but are still constantly getting Shield grabbed what do I do when I get perfect shielded? 🙏
I’m hoping ultimate fixes the lag issue for the online. They need to show your opponents connection so you can know what you’re getting yourself into. Online a great way to train, but it gets frustrating when your movement is thrown off by lag
Well it can be pretty bad at times. I've had people throw themselves off the stage because of the lag. Nintendo needs to get their act together since this game is the only reason most of us are paying for online in the first place.
+Falchion Unity i know what he means i play on 3ds too. the thing is there are no smash 3ds locals. his only option is to use his 3ds as a wiiu controller
Zero... I know that the WiiU is considered the main console for competitive play but would you still be able gain the same level of experience needed for competitive play if training is done on the 3DS? I know the button scheme is different but the mechanics of the game still applys...
Hi Zero! This video was a huuuuge help! I plan on entering the tournament scene soon, and I'm simply not tournament ready yet (that's not stopping me from going to Evo 2017, though). There are a few characters I really want to be good with (Villager, Wario, Pac-Man, Fox, Mewtwo, Corrin, and Bowser Jr.), and thanks to this video, I should be able to be at least decent with all these characters. Thanks again, and have a good day!
Stick with Villager and Mewtwo, maybe Corrin and Fox if you really want or for matchups. Pac-Man, Wario, and Bowser Jr. are terrible characters in many ways.
What about changing your controls so you don't have shield? ex. replace it with grab (so the change isn't to drastic, but it forces you to change your movement options)
Good ways to practice di? One of my biggest problems is DIng at the right moments. I know it is something you learn on the way but is there a way where I can possibly practice specific DI like smash DI to a point where it is practical?
The way I practice smash di was going into training mode and spawning a smart bomb and sding it in all the directions then survival ding it at the end.
Hey Zero, I'm trying to become better as a player and feel very comfortable with movement and my character's attacks. However I'm having a little trouble with reading opponents and breaking bad habits which is big in improving. Anyway you can go into detail how to do this? As in how to identify patterns and such?
I would go to local tournament but three problems, one I play 3ds and don't own a wii u to practice on often, two when I do play wii u I have a custom controller set up, and three the only tournament near me does not allow custom controlls
I love your videos so much but I always have to watch everything 2 or 3 times to understand because I get easily indulged into the matches that play while you talk lol
The way I train in smash 4 is by doing 100 perfect pivots, 100 auto-cancels, 100 wavebounces and 10km run worth of foxtrots. EVERY! SINGLE! DAY!
you probably don't want to hear my melee training guide
One punch reference????🤔
+_ Teknoor _ 10km run worth of dash dancing*
SkyCritic It's a one punch man reference I don't actually do this LOL

i like how this isnt a mentality video and an actual way to practice
Seriously. There are some very useful ideas in this video. Mentality is important, too, but literally EVERYONE focuses only on mentality when they make videos like this.
+Eli M That is what I was saying :P
yeah, it's probably the only big smash player that has ever given actual mechanical tips.
ikr? There is too many of those everywhere
Watch Izaw’s beginner training session, movement training session, and his Art of Smash.

I did have the same problem, but I eventually got over it....
No truer words
are u me?
Potato Guy I probably am. And we the same just like a thousand people, I will one day get first place at my local. EVEN if it's only a one time victory :D ( Then just keep training to get more )
At one point, I really thought that I couldn't get good at this game. Really, like anything else, just practice.
Holy shit that Ryu was CLEAN
that has two different meanings.
+killer keemstar is it false or False or false or false (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
+abid latif False.
he needs to do more #OneMove

Are you bringing in your own controllers, or are you using the controllers stationed there?
Lina Shields at my touneys there's no such thing as stationed controllers. So you have to bring your own. That couldn't be it.
6:23 Excuse me?!
ikr
What is the problem?
+metrih7 look at the gameplay
Anyone else have a problem with Falcon's jab killing at 40% like that? lol

This was actually very useful and practical. Thank you. You're actually one of my favorite players. I appreciate how respectful you are toward others. Respect for others is very important.
Can't believe no one's mentioned this yet.. but 6:19 - 6:32 ..
Taunt to get bodied. True af.
Your Falcon is ruthless. Need more of him in tourney!
Zero's already struggling to win first place lol. There's no way he's going to pick a lower tiered character that'll get him even worse results.
Bigdick Johnson His Falcon has taken sets off of M2K's pre-patch Diddy and Nairo's pre-patch ZSS. I'm not saying he should MAIN him, but maybe mix him in as a counter pick. Probably do better than his crappy Cloud lol :P
Friendlies doesn't count and everybody basically knows the falcon MU.
I was saying the same thing
Falcon isn't that low tier, hes high mid tier/low-high tier
can i money match you with Coupons and food stamps?
All you'll get is a bum like me
Christian Abarca atleast you understand my pain
this is the greatest comment I've seen today

I also feel like having as much control over your character as possible is linked with consistency.
Absolutely. It's a big part of why fast characters or characters with a lot of movement options tend to take the most time to master (e.g. Fox and Marth in Melee; or Sheik, Ryu, and Pikachu in Smash 4).

Don't you have a tier list for Melee and Wii U to finish?
No I don't want another update
right. where is the rest of the tier list
He can't. The game will get updated the soon he starts a new tier list.
His melee tier list sucked ass.
Melee won't get updated and never will.
Very informative. I'm definitely needed this.
So alot of people have been wondering why ZeRo is using pokemon music in every new video.
Cuz it's hype
Because it's relaxing, which makes ZeRo's advice videos even better
Pokemon go vids - people talk about pokemon - people use pokemon music 👍
Probably because everyone is excited for Pokemon Moon and Sun
So a lot of people have been wondering why did people complain to stop putting undertale music on his videos.
Zero, your advice videos are some of the best on RUclips. Keep up the good work, and hopefully you place first in your next tourney!
MOST HELPFUL VIDEO IN A LONG TIME thanks ZeRo this was actually really helpful to me :3
Feel like the main reason why people don't get good is because they talk about the game more than actually playing the game
Lol I know people who know every “smash” term in the book. And yet they struggle to beat a Lv 9 CPU
@@zachwagner9978 That's more of learning to beat an A.I rather than a person.
ThatWittyWolf the A.I is different than a person. With a person you can use a lot of psychology to make them think your going to do something. The CPU’s just don’t fall for those tricks. So I definitely agree
6:35 look at those mind games.
lolol i saw that too
Another great vid, ZeRo! Keep up the good work and I hope to see you in more nationals!
Thank you so much ZeRo. Hopefully this will assist me a little bit more on my quest to get better. Again thx
Thank you for the advice!
These will apply to any smash game, even Smash Ultimate?
0:37 How do you block Ryu's Focus Attack? I've done it, but I can never consistently block it.
This is exactly what I've been wanting, thanks Zero.
Wasnt there a Melee player who repeatedly money matched top players until he became one?
KoreanDJ
Barack Obama I wish Obama trolled smash threads haha
How is he a troll when you were the one who seeked attention in the first place? Good try, _troll._
Not Ben Stiller "troll" doesn't mean someone who gets attention for posting a regular comment. "Troll" means someone who bugs people to get a reaction.
Steven Bowser It sort of does, actually. Trolls are people who SEEK attention. So you're seeking attention right now, I'll be honest with you.
Omg that's some smart way of Training
Never thought about training like this
Thanks Zero

You will definitely get it down with a little practice. Hope this helps!
Psycho Thanks man this really helps
chris cheslog No problem, man :D
chris cheslog watch izawsmash's videos on art of smash, itll help a lot
Practicing throughout the night with a friend helps. I only have two problems. I only have the 3ds version and I live in a rural area where I'm confident no tournament s are held
This was very helpful and something i really have been wondering for a long time.
That Onett tech is very creative and interesting! I'll definitely give that a shot sometime!
lmao love how Ryu got so wrecked once he switched to Falcon
Also, don't be shy about just playing even free friendlies with good players in your local scene, especially at smaller events. When I go to weeklies and biweeklies I always try to play with people who I know are better than I am, either before the bracket starts or later on after it stops being necessary for all of the available setups to be used for tournament matches.

Thank you.
And then Nairo's response to how to train.
"Play for glory."
Zero when you said to practice against fast fallers and others, it's it better if you just play against all characters in sequence?
Thank you,this video helped alot
Falco for Mid Tier
Yup.
I'm going for top tier
Falco Lombardi You can't it's to late....
+Falco Lombardi (Harold) I support you dude u got this👍
Thanks ZeRo, this is a great help
can we talk about how Zero's Shulk was getting sauced up?
thank you so much for posting this, i was wondering how to go about going this for the longest time
So what do you consider the best control setup? Especially for swifter characters like Zero Suit Samus or Captain Falcon?
6:21 Look at how quick ZeRo turned that around O_O
ive been practicing short hop fast fall nairs with cloud daily, man is getting better a slow process.
Does anybody else have a specific stage they practice on?
Mine is Omega Pilot Wings w/ Pedal Glider theme playing.
Omega Gaur Plains w/ You Will Know Our Names playing or Omega Midgar (Both songs are great)
Omega ryus stage
Omega Mute City with Fire Field playing, Battlefield with Boss Battle (Brawl one) playing or Town and City with whatever playing.
I usually practise on stages that are deemed viable in tournaments, like battlefield, smashville, final destination (or any other omega stage) etc.
Pac Land, definitely.
I'm loving the Pokemon music in the background of these
Thank you ZeRo, that was really helpful !
I really needed this. Thank you
The one thing I worry about is shield i need some advice because I practice but are still constantly getting Shield grabbed what do I do when I get perfect shielded? 🙏
I’m hoping ultimate fixes the lag issue for the online.
They need to show your opponents connection so you can know what you’re getting yourself into. Online a great way to train, but it gets frustrating when your movement is thrown off by lag

6:20 ...Falcon can kill early without a Falcon Punch?
How do I find locals that have smash 3DS tell me ZeRo
you can use the 3ds as a wiiu controller. you can just use that.
+Almighty think he means where can be find locals that play smash 3ds
+Falchion Unity i know what he means i play on 3ds too. the thing is there are no smash 3ds locals. his only option is to use his 3ds as a wiiu controller
I play 3ds aswell
smash.gg is a good website for finding tournaments.
I appreciate the Pokémon battle music in the background.
I already do the 99 stock one! Good to see I’m training well!
Zero... I know that the WiiU is considered the main console for competitive play but would you still be able gain the same level of experience needed for competitive play if training is done on the 3DS? I know the button scheme is different but the mechanics of the game still applys...
I'm early, I should make a relevant joke.
Exeggutor.
Alola Exeggcutor is super hype!
+André Fumis ...
lol
hi early I'm dad
Its new form is so funny though! XD
This will probably help a lot, thanks ZeRo! :)

+omario83 Ah, thanks for the advice! I'll narrow it down.
Stick with Villager and Mewtwo, maybe Corrin and Fox if you really want or for matchups. Pac-Man, Wario, and Bowser Jr. are terrible characters in many ways.
What can i do if the local scene where I live is almost non existant?
Hey, thanks so much for this video! It was really helpful and it means a lot when top players help us noobies.
I love your longer videos :) Different MU's in the background would be cooler!
Can't wait for the video on burning out... something I feel like I've been experiencing lately
6:18 meanwhile that ryu is getting taunt to bodied
What's a good way to break habits in smash ? I shield way too much
What about changing your controls so you don't have shield? ex. replace it with grab (so the change isn't to drastic, but it forces you to change your movement options)
