- Today's soap was one of my favourites to create. As well as soap making, I love gardening and have a garden full of different flowers, plants and herbs, many of which I use in our soap making. I love creating oil infusions and teas to use in soap, something about it all just feels so magical and makes me feel just a little like a medieval apothecarist, creating magical potions and infusions!
We are using homegrown Dandelions for today's video - I must admit, these Dandelions grew through chance, rather than skill, but I am very glad they did! Two months before filming this video we began the oil infusion process and I will be telling you a little about how to do that yourself.
We have kept today's soap super simple, to let the beautiful, natural ingredients be the star of the show, but we have topped it with some dried Cornflower, Calendula, Lavender and Rose petals just to accentuate the natural beauty!
Our soaps are all palm oil free and this one is vegan friendly too.
The ingredients we used for this soap are as follows:
Water 220g
Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) 109g
Dandelion & Olive Oil Infusion 340g
Coconut Oil 184g
Shea Butter 75g
Cocoa Butter 36g
Sweet Almond Oil 99g
Castor Oil 57g
Lavender, Calendula, Cornflower & Rose petals - a pinch of each to decorate

Love the natural simplicity of this soap!
Thank you Holly, we felt that keeping things simple suited this design best :-)
Thank you for sharing your recipe and method! I love that the infused oil is in an old jam jar. I’ve been staying with my parents during quarantine/isolation and have been cleaning and saving all the jelly and pasta sauce jars we use to do things just like this! It makes me feel very fancy to see a professional doing the same.
I do the same as you! I always collect and keep our old jam jars as they come in so useful! I am sure you already know this, but to anyone who doesn't, remember to sterilise the jars fully before use to avoid any bacteria lingering in the jar which could cause the oil to spoil.
I like your videos, you always seem to be having a laugh. 😁👍
Thank you! We do have a lot of fun when making our soaps and our videos, I am very lucky to have a job that I love and to be doing that job with one of my best friends. We are serious when it comes to safety and product quality, but most of the rest of the time we are always joking about something or other!
Beautiful soap! Well done
Thank you Faith :-)
Hi, I love your videos and have been binge watching! I have a question, do you dry the dandelion flowers first before putting them into the oil to infuse?
Awesome video! Can I know what kind of rose you used will not turn brown? Mine change to brown🥺
Hello, To be honest, over time we find that most roses will fade to a brown colour, they don't do too well on cold process soap unfortunately. What we have found is that for us personally, using darker roses (dark pink or red) last best. We have some soaps made with dark pink rose petals that haven't faded too badly. We did a batch with light pink roses a while back and they turned brown within a couple of weeks, so we stick to darker roses now.
Thankyou for replying 😘 really love your videos❤️
Nice soap
Lol..I thought we use the leaves to make the soap
Tnx for the video
You are welcome Thelma! I believe Dandelion leaves can be used (but please check this before doing so, as I am not 100% certain on this) but it is always the flowers that we would use :-)
@@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany Ohk..thank you very much.

I had thought it needed direct sunlight? 😮

Thank you Pankaj, I am glad you enjoyed our video.
What is the shelf life tho
Hi Thelma. You can expect a shelf life at least as long as the nearest expiry date on the oils that you use to make the soap. Realistically, the high alkalinity will mean that the soap may well last past this as it will prevent bacteria from growing or the components of the soap from spoiling. We have soaps coming up for 2 years old that are still good to use and in fact, you often find that the longer the soap has been left before use, the more mild and gentle on the skin it becomes.
When we sell our soaps, we advise people to use them within 6 months of opening, but that is only because after this period the scent starts to fade, other than this, they are still perfectly good to use.
