I learned this technique years ago completely by accident. It was my first indigo powder oil infusion, and it turned out really weak (much lighter than the one in this video). I'd never used indigo before, so I thought maybe the pink would turn blue during saponification. Nope. 😂 Also, I recently learned (from a very kind subscriber - thank you!) that indigo comes from the leaves of the plant NOT the root, so I apologize for referring to it incorrectly in ALL of my videos until now. 🤦🏻♀️😂 I also wanted to mention that I’ve never had any issues with the pink or blue fading. After the soaps dry for about 4 weeks, I store them in a dry location away from direct sunlight. Thanks so much for watching! -Holly :)
Holly…you are amazing! I’m grateful that you show and share so much of your soap making knowledge! I’m need to soap making but you have inspired me to have fun and confidence in trying new things. I came across your RUclips as I was searching soap making, I have adapted as therapy for my healing recovery for 3 orthopedic surgeries within 17 months…I have falling in Love with soap making and it helps my kids sensitive skin and skin related conditions. Also Thank You for sharing all that you use and I will be using your Amazon Affiliate links to purchase a lot of much needed items! Sending You praises as well as Love+Light+Soul! Jackie+Tribe 🙏🏽🌿 ✨
This video was so beautiful in every way, Holly 💕💙 I am consistently impressed by your work. I was wondering how long your editing process takes, because your videos are sooooo professional. These soaps are so beautiful, soft, and pure looking! Take care, Holly 😊
Thank you so much, Shonna! 💕 That's so kind of you to say! I love the editing process, so your comment just made my day. 😊 I have a specific order I follow for every video just to help speed up the editing process. It's always the same: add all the unedited clips to the timeline, write & record voice over, add voice over and music to timeline - cut/edit clips as I go, add text anywhere needed, fix and normalize audio, add subtitles, export. I tend to spread it out and only do a little bit each day, but I could probably get it all done in about 2 or 3 days if I stayed focused. Finding music has become the most difficult part lately...it takes me forever to decide on anything. Thank you again! 💕
That's a gorgeous naturally coloured soap. Thank you for sharing this .never knew that indigo can be used to get pink colour. I normally use madder root powder, but will try making with indigo infusion next time.
Wow! What a huge difference it made by not shaking the infused oil jar to create such a stunning natural pink color from the indigo powder infused oil! This is truly magical and eye opening to me! Thank you so much, Holly for sharing!
Wow! So cool that indigo powder can create pink soap too! It's amazing how the oil infusion changed colour so quickly and easily just with a little agitation!
Holly. This was so fascinating to get two colours from the one product. I have a decent jar of indigo and know what I will be trying next week using your recipe to make a batch and see if mine produces pink on top. What a pretty soap clearly demonstrating that gell has occurred. Thank you so much Holly.
@3:49 As a watercolor painter I love the indigo pigment possibly more than any. It is magical. How did you make it magenta?? Could I achieve this w pigment bonded in gum arabic? Thank you Holly! I really love the wide range of color schemes you achieve using natural ingredients. I bet that kitchen is familiar with delicious smells!
Thank you Holly, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this vid ….the content was “spot on” for me as I want to use more plant material to include in my soaps for both color and benefits …
Beautiful! I’m curious though how the color of the soaps would’ve looked with no Kaolin clay, although I understand using the clay help the essential oils to last longer in the soap. 😊 Thank you for your generosity in the knowledge you’ve gained and freely share.
I’m making a pink soap soon and I was going to use pink clay but I will try your technique instead. Both soaps are beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing.
I love this pink one better, I like blue too, but yes the pink 💗. This was very cool Holly, I would've never thought that one color could make two! I really enjoyed this video and learned something new and pretty, thank you so much, I love all of your videos 🥰, and its so relaxing too. I hope you are doing well. 💕😊
Thank you! Yes, the pink is definitely my favorite, too. I was so surprised the first time I accidentally discovered this technique. I used it in a video a long time ago but didn't go into a lot of detail (my pink impression mat soap), and I've been meaning to share exactly how for so long. Thank you again, and I hope you're doing well! 💕😊
Thank you for a lovely video. I also love to make infusions. And although I like Indigo, Alkanet is my favorite. I was really pleased by the lovely pink you got for your Indigo. I have never achieved this - but I am going to try your tips.
Hi There, You make great tutorials, thank you. I have a question. Unless you live on a farm, why is lard your go-to fat? Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
I am not Holly, but I can tell you why many of us soapers use lard. First, it is a way to use the entire animal - no sense in throwing out the fat after using the rest of the meat. Second, lard is a very slow-tracing fat, which is a bonus for soapmakers who want to make fancy designs. Third, lard is very inexpensive throughout most of the US. Finally, lard makes wonderful soap. It is extremely gentle on the skin because it has a very low "cleansing" value. All soap will get you clean, but the cleansing number in the soap calculators actually refers to how much oil is stripped off the skin. With its low cleansing number, lard cleans very gently, so it is perfect for people with sensitive skin. HTH!
New soaper here and I have a question 🙋🏼♀️ When you’re weighing your oils are you using oz or fluid oz? My scale has both options I’ve been a student of soap making thus far and watching as many teachings as possible. I successfully made my first batch but I’m curious about whether to use the oz setting or the fluid oz setting. Thank you for your beautiful teachings and inspiration
Holly luv u for making this great video. I liked your soft pink color 😍. U mixed kaolin instead of TD, may i ask y? Plus I always get confused in case of mixing lye&oils temp. I have noticed that your lye temp is 10 temp lower than oils temp, is this correct? I have read somewhere that lye temp should be 10 digits higher than oils temp. So, which is correct? Plz tell me ASAP, I’m totally a newbie & learning things from u as well. TYA 🥰❤️💐
Holly I love your videos! I bought some indigo then realized I got the wrong kind, the stuff people use on hair! When I do get some I really want to try your recipe here, it looks so nice! I have a question, are the recipe amounts on the soap calculator for one batch like pink? Then you repeat for the blue? Thanks!! ps. I love how nice your voice sounds, very relaxing.
beautiful colors ! It made me want to try my own :) but i think a overheated the oil (i used castor oil) and it didn't turn pink tho :( i love your channel and use it as inspiration
To make the pink soap is the indigo from nurture? Update: I had some indigo from brambleberry, I made an infusion just like in the video. Put it away in my soaping area, came back 2 days later....I can see the magenta color...amazing....thank you Holly.
Holly I love your video could u maybe in the future do a video of how you make your soap videos I fight trying to do it and then never post them cuz they look bad 😔. Thank in advance
Thank you so much. You're a great teacher. Since there is indigo powder remaining on the bottom of the mason jar can more oil to the mason jar and hot bathed again or do you need to add more indigo powder?
Oh, thank you! That’s so kind of you to say. I actually tried reusing the indigo by adding more oil and reheating. I was able to get a pink soap, although it was a paler pink. :)
I infused some honeysuckle flowers in grapeseed oil a few months ago. I had strained it, but I just looked at it and there is a residue at the bottom of the jar. Is this a problem if it still smells good and there is no mold? I would love to get your opinion if you have time. Thank you in advance.
I have watched your video on infusing oils and in that one you strain the oil after infusing. What effect would that have on the colour compared with this process of leaving the powder in the bottle. Was this also a heat infusion or did you leave the powder in the bottle for some time?
Woah! The infusion is an awesome idea! Still pretty new to soap making but I'd love to find ways to make the olive oil, not so yellow, and this seems to be an option maybe? Question though, can we infuse olive oil similarly with titanium dioxide? I have the hardest time getting a true white in my soaps which I reallllllly would love to figure out.
Violet/purple counteracts yellow, blue counteracts orange. For the olive oil yellowness i am using a little bit alkanet root infusion. It will make it whiter ^^
Lovely to see a soaper actually using herbs for colour, pretty rare. More ethical than Mica, which has human rights/labour problems in certain countries where it is collected.

Hi Holly, you can use the full olive oil measurement in this soap can't you? That would make it a darker blue, or would that be to dark and stain your wash cloth?
I seen a video where the soaper used a 1/4 teaspoon of the indoor in the lye solution and that it wouldn't stain, but was wondering if used all the infused olive oil would stain?
Curious, I purchased some indigo powder, but the powder is green, it was quite a bit cheaper than the one I bought before which was blue. I tried researching why some indigo powders are green and some blue, but wasn’t able to find anything helpful.
There must be something I don’t understand. How with two similar macerations you can have one pink and the other blue. In your video we see you put 2 tbsp but in the subtitles it says 4 tbsp? Can you write me the exact proportion for each color? Thank you
As I show in the video, the infusion for both soaps is the same. The color difference comes from shaking the infusion jar (blue soap) vs allowing the powder to settle on the bottom (pink soap). By allowing the powder to settle, it yields a weaker infusion than when shaken.
It is definitely a gray blue. You could try adding more and see if you like the color. However, if I want a darker blue, I use the other method I mention in the video using a more intense, dark indigo powder.
Does anyone ever have color-morphing issues with indigo, or is it just me? I infused cold, over a few months, and prepared soap batter in a way more similar to the blue soap, using it as a colorant instead of replacing all the olive oil in the recipe. When I completed my batch, the color was a dark blue green, and it looked as though it was going to stay that way, but when I cut into the loaf, I was surprised to find that the inside was a bright acid green. About 2 minutes after cutting, the green had oxidized to a less vibrant olive shade. It never did darken fully, but I was still happy with the color.

You're welcome! I hope that helped. Yes, I use 4 tablespoons of this particular brand of indigo. 💕
Question. Has anyone made a shampoo bar with this indigo infused oil??? Does it dye blonde hair??
