  • Join us as we visit Gdańsk, Poland in this travel guide exploring the top attractions and best things to do in Gdansk (Danzig). As the final and northernmost destination we visit during our time in Poland this port city is one of the coolest places we've visited on this particular trip through Europe. From cobbled streets to posh museums to river cruises you'll find something for everyone here. One thing we noticed was that it was considerably more expensive in terms of accommodations and food compared with other Polish cities we've visited; however, it has charms that more than make up for it.

    Our visit Gdańsk travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide, top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting castles, churches and museums. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Gdańsk tourism brochure, Gdańsk itinerary or Gdańsk, Poland city tour.
    10 Things to do in Gdańsk, Poland Travel Guide script:
    After visiting the Basilica, we walked over to the main pedestrian street in Gdansk: Dluga, also known as Long Street. Unlike most Polish cities, Gdansk doesn’t have a main square, but this stretch of road acts as the equivalent with lots of vendors and performers along the way.
    On the west end of Dluga (Dooga) we came across the Amber Museum, which sounded a little unusual, so we bought tickets and went up. Here we learned the history of Amber trade in the Baltic, and we also discovered that the tower that now houses the museum, was once a prison and torture chamber.
    Not done with museums just yet, our next stop was the Historical Museum of the City of Gdansk. I think we spent more time staring at the ornate doorways, ceilings and staircases, than we did at the exhibit itself!
    Here, we also saw the Medieval Crane, which was first mentioned in texts in 1367, and was at one point the biggest working crane in the world.
    Next, it was all aboard the SS Sołdek, a Polish coal and ore freighter which is now a ship-museum.
    And since we’re on the topic of food, we need to show you a milk bar we really enjoyed.
    On our last day in Gdansk, we walked over to the European Solidarity Centre, which is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Old Town. The museum tells the story of Solidarity, a Polish trade union and civil resistance movement, founded in 1980 at the Lenin Shipyard. This was the first union not controlled by the communist party, and it’s a fascinating museum to learn a bit more about the history.
    And that’s a wrap for our Gdansk travel guide. We hope you guys enjoyed this video and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do in Gdansk on you visit. You know the drill, if you have any other tips or suggestions to share with travellers, feel free to pop those in the comments section below. Happy travels and until next time!

      As someone who started visiting in Poland right after high school in 1998 (I was a theater actor in Iowa who was invited with an acting troupe to visit Teatr Wybrzeze), and started living there full time (2004 to 2014, aside from a short while in Scotland) after American military service, I am looking forward to doing a video series on my experiences, the culture, arts, music etc when I finally return to Poland in 2022 and 2023. I often joke with friends that 'Trojmiasto jest moj miasto, (bo jestem Troy)', and I will always love this area. I am particularly fond of Gdynia Orlowo and Sopot, but the entirety of the Tricity is in my heart all the time. I've been in Texas the past eight years, and miss Poland immensely! So thanks to these folks for putting on a great show! Na zdrowie!

    Hi guys.. that's my city! Thanks for showing it. Super glad you liked it. With regard to food : kompot - you take unprocessed fruit, fresh or frozen ( if winter time), can be of one kind or all sorts mixed, put it in a pot, pour over lots of fresh water and add some sugar. Then cook for about 15-30 min and allow to cool. That's all. The cutlet is called schabowy. And the pie/cake is called "pleśniak". Greetings and Take care!

    During your dining experience at Neptun Milk Bar one of Gdansk's two carillons was playing in the background. These are not electronic - but actually require a Carilloneur (person who plays them from a playing desk up in the tower). Unusual for a city to have two lovely instruments like this.

    Kompot is a fruit drink, which is made by cooking fruits :) It is made from a lot of fruits, for example: apples, strawberries, sweet/sour cherries, pears, currants and rhubarb. Personally, I love when it's cold :) very fresh, fruity and cooling drink :)
    If it comes to this soup, it was probably Zupa Jarzynowa, which could be translated as vegetable soup/greengrocery soup (it depends on the way somebody prepare its). This was thick variant. There is also rather thin variant. It is Polish version of Minestrone :)

    Great video! I’m taking my friends for a trip there in November and can’t wait to show them around! I lived in Gdańsk for 6 years- still miss it every now and then!
    Also at 3:09 - just an FYI that the actual old town is a different part of the city, it’s the area between the Old Town Hall and goes all the way towards the solidarity museum and the shipyard. Dluga street and the parts of town you’ve shown is just simply called the Main Town 😊 or as locals call it - Gdansk! Yes, the other areas of the city are called by it’s own names - which is kinda weird tbh but it makes sense historically.

      Torun I agree, but Bydgoscz? I told some locals I want to go there, and even a girl who was from there told me not to go there. There"s nothing of tourist interest in Bydgoscz. It's a modern industrial town.

    The most beautiful city in Poland. There is everything here, the wind from the sea, a beautiful beach, medieval architecture, monuments, the Old Town of Gdańsk with Neptune (Gdanska Starowka) and the inhabitants of Gdańsk who love tourists.

    Kompot is really easy to make. Just throw some fruits into the pot (apples, strawberries and other berries, cherries, apricots, even plums - every combination works) and add a shitload of sugar, sometimes lemon juice or vanilla, cover with water and boil it :) Love yout vlog, especially those videos from Poland. You both seem so kind :)

      Thank you! That is cool to hear. I remember that with this booking we waited a bit longer and there wasn't as much available or at as cheap of a price as in other cities in Poland. Our biggest tip would be when you know your dates that you'd like to visit book weeks to a couple of months in advance for more selection.

    Hello from Utah, My spouse and I are in the early stages of planning a 2.5 week vacation in Poland. Gosh I really need some insight/advice from our favorite youtubers...yes you guys. 2.5 weeks is not much time to experience the country. What do you recommend? We do not night party much at all. We like history, nature and historic architecture. We do airbnb always as long as there is a cloths washer. What city do you recommend where maybe we can do a few day trips. We typically do not rent a car but do like trains, uber and bus services. Thank you. PS: we love your videos!!!! Your Venice Video was inspiring and so far top ten. That is the sort of vacation we enjoy where every corner is a breathtaking view or experience

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  4 года назад +1

      Thank you very much! That is really exciting to hear about your trip. For a 2.5 week trip I'd prioritize Krakow, Warsaw and Gdansk. You'd have plenty of time to explore each city with opportunities for day trips as well.

    Kompot should be made from boiled fruits about 10 minutes, usually with sugar (as without it is vary sour). But some restaurants I think can make it from same fruit syrope? especially if they are to sweet.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  3 года назад +2

      Thanks Davis! It is considerably cheaper than Canada. Especially for buses, trains and meals out. If you avoid touristy restaurants and go to local milk bars (eateries) you can grab nice meals for just a few dollars.

      That restaurant is very expensive. Most people don't realise you pay per 100g for the fish, as it doesn't tell you outside. There is a superb restaurant literally round the corner, you should have gone there! Also, your beer wouldn't be in a plastic glass, ugh!
