I actually return to this Nails record more than Unsilent Death I think because the intensity is so OTT and always cranked to 11, no to 12. The guitar tone is also one of the most brutal things I have ever heard in my life.
The way I see it: Unsilent Death was my favorite 14 minute gym playlist until I overplayed it. Abandon All Life is 17 minutes of fresh material. You're right, not revolutionary, but goddamn do I miss getting this pumped listening to Nails.
For powerviolence I feel like you missed some majors of the genre mostly Man Is the Bastard, Capitalist Casualties, Spazz, Econochrist and the Slap a Ham records comps are vital releases. A huge oversight IMO.
He reviews older stuff. It is totally a possibility! Also, if you expose powerviolence to someone, and they like it, they will eventually discover Charles Bronson.
Wide open wound is imo the heaviest track I’ve ever heard even compared to there more recent stuff. The song is a bit slower but the riffs and lyrics are absolutely devastating. Can’t wait for their new album
Personally, I really loved this album, but this was also my introduction to Nails. The tones they create are just so heavy and plain awesome. I think they "Nail"ed it.
Now that I've heard both albums I'm feeling much more comfortable with "Abandon All Life", it brings much more to the table: more dynamics, changes, tempos, arrangements... and it is notably better mixed (guitars are paned) things come and go from both sides) and I disagree on the voice part, I like it much more in this album.
Ah, you should have mentioned that the 12" LP spins at 45 rpm! Other than that awesome review, thought i was the only one not as aghast as I was at unsilent death
There's a lot of crossover between the two, but doom tends to be long, slow, and atmospheric, whereas sludge is more punk in its 'rough-and-ready' sound. Doom can feature clean vocals, like Paradise Lost, or Solitude Aeturnus, or more death metal-like gutturals, like Winter. Sludge often features less polished and higher-pitched yells and scream, like Eyehategod or Iron Monkey.
good review. i quite like this album as well, although i may like it more than Unsilent Death, gotta go back to that one and make sure what about reviewing the new KEN Mode album?
Hey Anthony, did you said Unsilent Death instead of Abandon All Life at the end of the video on purpose or you just got confused by so much RAAHHTFATAWTAWTF?
The big difference between Abandon All Life and Unsilent Death is the huge sounding production as well as the noted Suffocation influenced riffs. I also don't hear much of a powerviolence influence on their sound.
You should review Admiral Angry - Buster. You'd well like it, if you haven't heard it already. Aggressive bottom heavy Sludgecore band from Cali, with a kinda fresh take on drums.
Thats interesting. I prefer the condensed shorter songs. There is a challenge in picking it all apart and seeing whats going on in there. Cool to hear your opinion though
I would have given a 6, I never really felt that they brought much else to the table besides that intensity. Which they do really well. Next review should be Watsky's Cardboard Castles, promoting a fellow RUclipsr would be cool.
In my opinion, not much. Truth be told, it's a genre of rock/metal that's hard to describe. That's why a lot of bands are dubbed with so many monikers like "Retro Stoner Metal/Rock" or "Doom/Sludge Metal" or Stoner Hardcore Punk/Rock", etc. There's a few differences. For example, sludge rock/metal is usually defined as thick, heavy, slow riffing. Hopefully, I gave you an idea of what it is. Also, there's nothing wrong with some doing further research if you're still curious. :)
Not really familiar with this kind of music, but still I'm gonna give it a spin. I know this is meant to be fast, raw, in your face and stuff but for me the longer the tracks are, the better. When Nails play a long song it is developed, it has interesting changes, it goes somewhere, wether when it comes to the fast ones they just explode with no logic or reason, they don't sound good and you can't really tell what's going on. I'd like to see this guys make a long album, that would be awesome.
Can someone clarify what Anthony means by "meat and potatoes" grindcore? I've heard him use it before when describing Pig Destroyer because they're "standard," yet my drama teacher in 10th grade used it to describe pieces of art that were deeper and worth reading into (e.g., Hairspray is "cotton candy," Sweeney Todd is "meat and potatoes;" you don't want cotton candy all the time but it's sweet and enjoyable, yet with the other there's more substance to it).
Cody Troyer Actually, he's referring to the fact that Nails' lyrical base revolves entirely around Sunday Dinner; specifically Meat and Potatoes, whom many consider to be the most well-rounded meal of the day.
no genre is just a time and place. powerviolence is and always has been a style. if you think it's a time and place and only that, that's your hangup.
Not a guitar solo btw it's a pick slide
that moment when the review is almost as long as the album
YOU WILL NEVER BE ONE OF US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS FUCKING TRACK
DISGUST
"screams in loud"
I actually return to this Nails record more than Unsilent Death I think because the intensity is so OTT and always cranked to 11, no to 12. The guitar tone is also one of the most brutal things I have ever heard in my life.
This is actually my favorite Nails album.
Dragonsun Doom facts bro absolutely perfect

Definitely their best album.
Incredible thumbnail.

NegativeXZeroX
Howdy ;)
The song Tyrant absolutely nails it
Dat pun tho
Ayyy you got 69 likes!!
The way I see it: Unsilent Death was my favorite 14 minute gym playlist until I overplayed it. Abandon All Life is 17 minutes of fresh material. You're right, not revolutionary, but goddamn do I miss getting this pumped listening to Nails.
The perfect music for a nice evening stroll *IN HELL*
you said unsilent death forever.
Because Unsilent Death pummels the shit out of everything in the past, now, and the future.
i clicked for the middle fingers
The flipping-two-birds-fuck-you-teeth-gnashing thumbnail of this video is all one needs to sum up the new Nails record.
Damn. Anthony really does have the best teeth in the game
Spaz better than Matthew Santoro lol
it was badass to meet you the other night dude. so glad the answer to bad brains was "so much yes"
i don't think you know what powerviolence is.
YEAHHHHHH
yes.
Hey dude, it might be too late but I'd love to see you review "Rudiments of Mutilation" from Full of Hell
When he reviewed Trumpeting Ecstacy, he said he didn't have much to say about Rudiments or Roots of Earth.
For powerviolence I feel like you missed some majors of the genre mostly Man Is the Bastard, Capitalist Casualties, Spazz, Econochrist and the Slap a Ham records comps are vital releases. A huge oversight IMO.
You should definitely do more power violence...
My point being to EXPOSE THE WORLD TO THE WONDER THAT IS CHARLES BRONSON!
charles bronson hasnt released anything in years you loony but
He reviews older stuff. It is totally a possibility!
Also, if you expose powerviolence to someone, and they like it, they will eventually discover Charles Bronson.
Charles Bronson is the shit
Powerviolence is for posers
@@antihypebeast3311 lmao

Man is the bastard is a essential if you're getting into powerviolence
good review. i quite like this album as well, although i may like it more than Unsilent Death, gotta go back to that one and make sure
what about reviewing the new KEN Mode album?
i think so.
You ever listen to Weekend Nachos Anthony? I'm pretty tight with their vocalist. They're releasing some new stuff soon. Might be something you like!
The video where Fantano called a pick slide a “solo”
Y U NO REVIEW Kvelertak - Meir AND Soap&Skin - Sugarbread EP (I know you talked about the title track)
You said "Unsilent Death forever" at the end of the video. I guess you really are in love with that album.
I love how this review took half the time it takes for the actual album to play
goddamn,that intro was heavy,POWthony BLOCKtano
My favourite Nails album. And, it always will be
NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRR
I like these kind of reviews, because I know absolutely nothing about this band/genre/style and it's cool to see you explain/contextualize it.
i'm gonna review bowie. :-) serengeti is gonna be in a future quickie segment.
Appreciate your metal reviews a ton, there aren't many who do them right
Anthony says he’s changed his thoughts on this album. I also feel as if this has grown on me heavily. Banger
That thumbnail...
Priceless!
the video in the listen link doesn't exist anymore.
good.
Pariah is one of my top 3 favourite songs of all time…
Alongside Paranoid Android and In The Aeroplane Over The Sea 😅
God, I love that thumbnail. Your face rocks Anthony!!
nice review, having only listened to Abandon All Life which really caught my attention, I'm now even more intrigued to listen to Unsilent Death,
Tyrant and wide open wound are the best tracks on the album. Nails go hard. Simple as that
Hey Athony, think you'll be reviewing Ihsahn's new album album when it gets released?
Hey Anthony, did you said Unsilent Death instead of Abandon All Life at the end of the video on purpose or you just got confused by so much RAAHHTFATAWTAWTF?
Inter Arma-Sky Burial, Call of the Void-Dragged Down A Dead End Path, and of course I know you'll review this but KEN Mode-Entrenched.
the Shitstorm split with conga furry is a great introduction to Shitstorm
Cal is getting better and better
You didn't mention Rorschach In your "Powerviolence Suggestions." Not a fan?
The big difference between Abandon All Life and Unsilent Death is the huge sounding production as well as the noted Suffocation influenced riffs. I also don't hear much of a powerviolence influence on their sound.
Why did you say Unsilent Death at the end?
You should review Admiral Angry - Buster.
You'd well like it, if you haven't heard it already.
Aggressive bottom heavy Sludgecore band from Cali, with a kinda fresh take on drums.
Powerviolence was a time and a place. This album, while incredible, is in no way powerviolence.
Thats interesting. I prefer the condensed shorter songs. There is a challenge in picking it all apart and seeing whats going on in there. Cool to hear your opinion though
This is the fucking review I've been waiting for. Can't wait to see these guys at This is Hardcore. FUCK!!!
Great review, but they aren't a trio anymore. Picked up the guitarist from Harm's Way. Does wonders for their sound.
Anyone notice the pink iPhone on Cal's keyboard at 0:19?
omg the beat that cal played is sick! Did he did it?
Needle Drop, the video on the link doesn't work
I would have given a 6, I never really felt that they brought much else to the table besides that intensity. Which they do really well. Next review should be Watsky's Cardboard Castles, promoting a fellow RUclipsr would be cool.
You should check out Hesitation Wounds new 7". It features members from Touche Amore, Trap Them, and Against Me.
Doom tends to focus more on ambient atmospheres, sludge tries to bring a more dissonant, metallic sound in both of their slow, heavy approaches.
Hopefully, I gave you an idea of what it is. Also, there's nothing wrong with some doing further research if you're still curious. :)
I know the album is a few months old, but I would love to hear what you have to say about Diluvia by Freelance Whales.
Are you gonna review the Kevinsky album?
good jerb.
Im a simple man. I hear big fuck off angry ass riffs, I smile.
Anthony, do you like Norma Jean's "Redeemer"?
Gaza's last album came out last year. There was no needle drop review of it.
What's the difference between doom + sludge?
Not really familiar with this kind of music, but still I'm gonna give it a spin. I know this is meant to be fast, raw, in your face and stuff but for me the longer the tracks are, the better. I'd like to see this guys make a long album, that would be awesome.
7:25 *Abandon All Life. Not unsilent death lol
I give it the same grade glad that there is length to the tracks. Also do that strokes album I would love a good laugh haha.
I keep coming back to this video strictly for the thumbnail.
Only Anthony can upload Vampire Weekend and Nails reviews on the same day.
Doom=the first riff of the song "BlackSabbath". Sludge=Black Flag's "My War" side 2.
Can we talk about the breakdown on no surrender????
the thumb nail for this video is legendary
I demand a track review for Earl Sweatshirt - "WHOA".
Is Abandon All Life the first LP you've reviewed where your review is longer than the actual album?
when's cal gonna drop his album?
It does feel like a faster, more intense Unsilent Death, but that comes at the cost of a lot of the tracks being less memorable.
Meat and potatoes generally means just the good stuff no filler.
Cody Troyer Actually, he's referring to the fact that Nails' lyrical base revolves entirely around Sunday Dinner; specifically Meat and Potatoes, whom many consider to be the most well-rounded meal of the day.
Bane's Super Brutal Metal Funtime I wish there was a powerviolence band like that.
Link to the youtube video is broken.
Think you'll review Clutch- Earth Rocker?
Requesting a review for the 20/20 Experience and for Comedown Machine!
Also, you should review the new kvelertak! They're streaming it right now.
0:30-0:40 SOMEONE MAKE A TEN-MINUTE LOOP. NOW. PLEASE!
What's your favorite squarepusher album?
I wonder, what do you think about Nobody.one - russian instrumental rock band. They have released new LP this year. Please Anthony.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the new Alpha Rev album Bloom.
Also Tony are you a Punch fan?
That statement physically hurt my face.
What's with the vaporwave beats that Cal did?
did you ever check out the new Youth Lagoon?
I need a release of Cal's micro tunes. Make it happen Fantano.
