The Scientifically Informed Philosophy lecture series explores the intersection of empirical knowledge and existential inquiry, guiding participants in constructing a personal philosophy grounded in scientific understanding. Through a synthesis of physics, biology, and psychology, the series delves into how scientific principles can inform ethical decisions, self-perception, and our place in the universe. Attendees will engage in thought-provoking discussions using evidence-based reasoning to navigate life's big questions, fostering a rational yet reflective approach to personal growth and worldview formation. The Scientifically Informed Philosophy lecture series is made possible by the vision and generous support of Cyan Banister.

What I have concluded from studying the double-slit experiment, is that as I experience predetermined events, or events where I have no control, I can still (to some extent) exercise control over my state of consciousness as I undergo these events. I believe this is the most basic definition of "consciousness" and becoming "conscious." Many people attach a spiritual quality to being "conscious," but at its root, it is the ability to recognize that we are conscious beings who have an effect on the environment around us. When we are aware of this power, we become (to varying degrees), "self aware."

Yes. Former NASA Physicist and 50-year consciousness researcher, Tom Campbell, defines consciousness as "awareness with a choice". This is a Virtual Reality and consciousness is "the computer". We are Individuated Units of Consciousness (IUOCs), which log on to these avatars here in this Physical Matter Reality (PMR) that we call "the Physical Universe" in order to have these learning experiences from the consequences of our choices. This is how we, and by extension, the Larger Consciousness System (aka "LCS", of which we are a part), continue to grow, lower our individual and collective entropy, and become love.

But you are right that, if "we" made this choice but have no memory of doing so, then it is moot.

Like reincarnation. Even if it were a thing, if you can't remember previous lives then you can't learn from your mistakes and must repeat previous errors.

It is a Western view that we did not choose our parents. Once you question this assumption, everything is put in a new light.

      Not really.

It is not an assumption. It is a fact. You are the one assuming. I'm going to defer to Buddha's expertise on this one. "All that we are is the result of what we have thought, it is founded on our thoughts, it is based in out thoughts." The Bhuddha. Verse one of the Dhammapada. We are from an an egg that got lucky, are a product of our DNA, brain types and then, life experiences. Until we wake up and stop living through our memories.
What is that foil hat stuff you got going on there? Did we also get our memories wiped by being passed under a river? And if the population has continued to grow, where are all those extra spirits coming from? 😂

@@danielpaulson8838 Honestly, I'm not clear about what you are saying. Are you saying that if our thoughts, including memory, do not include awareness of having chosen, then there was no choice?

@@bevklayman4158 "All that we are is the result of what we have thought." The Buddha.
You laid out non-demonstrable supernatural. Logical fallacy as it were. Can you back anything you said?
Or you might say something like, "In my own faith in my religious beliefs which are.... and therefore I believe in re-incarnation and we chose our parents."
instead of the "Western idea that we assume we don't chose our parents..... blah, blah"
I know and everyone else does too, you don't speak for Western, or Eastern.
You have a personal variant that is based in faith. Yet you put down others with a tone of superiority. All while demonstrating nothing.
Former Christian? They're all judgmental like that too. It's an arrogance. A very visible one.

@@bevklayman4158 It won't be clear to random arrogant supernaturalists. I'm talking about reality.
Just back up that supernatural claim or have the humility to recognize it is a personal faith. This sounds like a YT Christian tactic.
