I've been doing my sprints for about 3 weeks now, 2 - 3 times a week. The muscle soreness I felt on week 1 was just insane. Not just my legs, but even my arms and obliques were quite sore. Just goes to show how long its REALLY been since I've done sprints with this kind of intensity. It sounds weird but yeah there's a study that's been done where people in their older years (like seventies I think it was, or even eighties maybe) were asked to play music from their youth, read articles and watch television, listen to the radio, things from thirty or forty years ago for like a week. What was found is that their biological age was reduced significantly, even to the point of some of them looking younger. Not suuuuper relevant, hahah, but what you said about the 90's and early 2000's music reminded me of it. 😁🙏
Hey Scott! You trained me in the past right before my wedding and I got in fantastic shape. Let that slip a bit recently but have picked up the Peloton. The cardio intensity from that thing is wild. I've certainly noticed the clarity that comes with a hard push. Not a big runner but the intense cardio + weights has been pretty wild even with it only being a 20-30 minute class. Loved the video great to hear from you!
I take around 10min of rest after every 8s sprint, maybe after the first sprint I can take 1-3min rest but once I do the second sprint I crash out & nearly faint, so I make sure I do every sprint fully charged
Scott, I just have to say it’s too cool to see you still putting out good information. You were the first fitness RUclipsr I came across over a decade ago. Very inspiring to see you still doing the damn thing. 💪
Been a sub for a long time, I know you’ve been making less content lately. It sucks when the algorithm screws good creators over. Don’t quit on us Scott, we’re still here.
I really enjoy the transparency you bring to your videos. I never touched a weight until 8 months ago and I'm 43 years old. It has awakened more man inside and it's due to the intensity to which I train. So I totally agree with GOOD stress affecting HGH levels and to anyone who thinks they're too old to start, get your ass to the gym. It truly is amazing!
For whatever reason I hadn't checked out a video from Scott in a very long while and I'm so glad I did today! I walk everywhere in the city including all my errands grocery shopping etc and I feel my most upbeat and energized when I stay out for hours. I'm going to invest in some decent running shoes and try this method out and see how well my 47 yo joints hold out.
The amount of young men doing TRT seems to be doubling by the week. No one wants to earn it anymore. Hearing your passion, especially on a video from a couple of years ago, brings so much relief. Thank you. I'd be fine if these young men removed "replacement".
Dude this is SO TRUE. It literally clicked instantly. When I was 18-22 and also in my best shape I had to sprint a lot for work, and it didn't matter how tired I was I had to send it and over the course of the 14 hour shift when I would hit a sprint while my feet were killing me I would just feel GOOD, almost euphoric, even though my feet may be cursing me out. I am going to go sprint TODAY, thanks so much Scott!
I used to push that hard when I would run in college. It's been about 20 years since I did that. I've been thinking of trying to run again and see what I can do, though I did find it a bit of a struggle last time I did because of nerve damage. Rowing is no problem and I do that everyday, so that's something I could more easily adapt to this sort of tip. I stopped making excuses about not working out during lockdown, while everybody else said how much they were worried about their health and just got fat.
I'm 53 and I used to run years ago, not particularly well but I did enjoy the challenge. I'd typically run 2 or 2.5 miles. I started to get sciatica so I stopped for a bit. Started working my core doing a lot of hanging leg raises and my lower back pain went away. I started running again and got a bone spur in my right heel lol. That feels better so now I do a run / walk and voila I've never been so happy. Just started a couple of weeks ago. I'll run about 2 miles. I started running 1 minute and 20 seconds and then walk 40 seconds. And do that basically the entire run. I'm already running 1 minute 30 seconds and walking 30 seconds. If I start to feel really winded I can cheat just a little and then get back on track. If I feel good I can try a 1 minute 40 second with a 30 second rest, etc. anyway its working for me. It's a great workout and I can get the benefits of running without going all in. My ultimate goal would be to run say 2 minutes and walk 30 seconds. Or I might try to extend the distance to 3 miles. So many ways to make gains.
It feels like your describing HIIT training. I personally prefer steady state cardio but then again I like running because it helps to clear the mind. I would like to end this comment by saying great video Scott and I hope you will do more in the near future!
Steady state cardio is far more inferior than HIIT at maintaining lean muscle mass and the production of HGH. Its a preference and I get you but HIIT has a different role compared to SSC. HIIT is MAYBE a little less effective at cardiovascular health but I woulda assume adding BOTH into the weekly routine would compliment each other greatly
High intensity, low volume really is the way to go when it comes to building muscle. It’s way more time efficient, your producing so much mechanical tension which is the driving force behind muscle building, and teaches you mental and physical discipline.
I have worked for over 45 years; at least half of that involved hard physical labor. "Working out" was more of a hobby and a social activity; I worked enough during the day. Also, as I've gotten older, knee, shoulder, and back pain have reminded me that I'm no longer a young man. I can still exercise, if I'm careful about my form and don't try to lift really heavy. I avoid pushing myself as much now as I once did. However, I've found other ways of working out, being physical, and getting some decent returns. It involves a lesser intensity, but doing that for longer periods, with brief periods of "pushing" myself. Performing various light (
I am currently 57 years old and I absolutely loved that type of HIIT training and I only stopped as I tore a calf muscle and rushed a bit to try and get back into it and tore it again. I have seen significant loss after stopping.
I noticed during softball season even those few sprints here and there make you feel great the rest of the week. I guess I Never put it all together but thanks for doing so.
The best shape I was ever in - a few friends and I did bleachers: sprint up, walk down + laps: sprint the straights, walk the curves - we would do this for 30 mins. After that we would go do weights for an hour, we would fail our last set on every exercise, then stretch for 15 minutes then do a slow walk for another 15 minutes. We did this for an entire summer. We felt like crap the first few weeks, and we had to fight the urge to throw up but, we were like machines at the end. I'm not even sure I could attempt this right now, I haven't run flat out in years.
That title had me not gonna lie but a few secs into the video, I knew Scott wouldn't let me down like that. True OG. Hope you're doing well these days man. 🙏
I'm currently following an "upper/lower/core" split, but prioritizing training my "mental strength" I noticed that I've always stopped just a bit below my max limit, either with reps or with weight, just overall intensity Coz I always give up "mentally", when my muscles start to feel a bit sore If I can train my muscles and tendons, I thought I could train my brain the same way :) safe and incremental overload over time, and patience
Man, I just added sprints into my workouts last week. I have a stretch right in front of my house that’s about 70 meters at a slight incline. Im supersetting sprints with whatever my second exercise is for that day and I’m loving it. Thanks for the video, Scott.
Don't fully believe it(the science regarding these things is always woozy) but still pressed the like button because you're the best natty youtuber out there :)
Oh, I love a good sprint when you feel you may even take off and defy gravity. I'll be 39 this year, have been following you since your early days am in the best shape of my life. Keep going great!
I’m 48 this summer and I’m fitter and stronger now than when I was younger. I teach spin 6 x week and if I don’t get my heart to it’s max I know I’m not working hard enough!!! If you can’t sprint trust get to a spin class low impact on your joints unlike running outside pounding the streets 😊
During the pandemic when gyms were closed, I was fortunate enough to acquire a basic squat rack, adjustable bench and weights. I had never done a barbell only routine before, so I was excited to try something new. Historically I had trained in the 8-10 rep range, following all the youtube science for hypertrophy etc. I decided to try training using the "Greyskull LP Phraks Variant", which is essentially a powerlifting routine which focusses on only the basic compound lifts, every session, 3 sessions a week with 3 sets of 5, with the final set to total failure for each exercise. I have never been stronger, lighter or bigger. It was so unexpected. Now HIT is the only thing I do, and I find myself seeing better results in less time than YEARS of training with higher rep ranges using machines, dumbells, cables, etc.
Definitely some sound advice. I like to go out for a run. When it starts to get tough, I just thank God for the ability to feel the sensations that I'm feeling, be they pleasant or unpleasant. Sucking in air, lungs burning, legs burning...it's just awesome to be alive, and I thank my Creator for that gift
44 here, still running, still sprinting and still training hard... Ok, I'm not fast as I used to be in sprinting but, for sure i try my best every time 💪💪💪
My hamstrings don't like running sprints, but I can blow up my HR on the water rower! I do feel overall better when I incorporate a few short sessions per week.
Kind of off topic, but in line with pushing yourself to your max. When I was younger, in my 20's, I used to surf for 6 hours straight. I would get in the state of almost pure exhaustion. Arms, legs, neck, and core on fire and could hardly move. This is actually dangerous and definitely don't recommend, but I was younger and having a blast. This is the only times I felt that runners high. Best feeling ever and allowed me to keep going for another hour. Man, do I miss those days.
I recently tried tried something similar based on the same research. Except I already do strides during my runs, and wanted to maintain my base training at running because I don’t exactly have a lot of type I fiber and need as much aerobic adaptations as possible right now (gas exchange). So I bought the $50 starting blocks off Amazon and separately began **only** training accelerations out of those blocks. Sets are programmed as 10x10m. Honestly, I can’t take the hit from more than a single set of 10x10m without it completely ruining my weightlifting. The difference between using blocks and not is night and day. My entire body gets sore. I go all out in those 10m. I try to schedule it a few hours before weightlifting so that I can recover and hopefully then add the stimulus from lifting when hormones spike. I don’t know if I am doing it exactly right, but despite being wrecked, my lifts are going up fast. It’s just 10x10m twice per week using those blocks. I am so curious if more advanced lifters have tried this.
Scott I’m 46 I have struggled building muscle since I was young, started doing sprints and my gains and muscles are same as in my 20s , I tried trt a year ago it did nothing but bad side effects, sprinting is life changing
You’re right life happens! It is hard to continue doing so personally I work 10-6 with 2 kids that I love more than anything so it means I wont go to the gym in the evening and don’t see my kids while I go train.. that leaves me with one option, when they sleep. I wake up 5 am to go train and come back home to wake them up get the to school and go back to the gym to finish up the cardio lol sometimes I get tired but yeah It’s easy to let the gym go and eat bs food
Im in this slump for the gym atm. I have gotten into cycling 40km a week though, feels better on my knees. Maybe an over 40s thing now! Next thing lycra! 😂😂 I appreciate these vids and thanks
Thx Scott. Long time viewer here. I loved this video. Life definitely happens. But thx to you, and others, Ive managed to remain consistent in my working out routines. Take care bro, love ya (no homo lol)
I think you can sprint for 10 seconds as well for the same effect. That's what I read and when I do this for 10 sets I wind up losing a lot of weight and it seems getting more muscular. I use an elliptical and crank up the resistance. Sprinting on a sidewalk is bad for your knees and hips...I destroyed myself doing those. Never again.
Can this workout be done more than once a day for maximum results? Or is twice a day counterproductive. Is daily also better than only 2 or 3 times a week? Thanks
Reminds me of training for track back in the day. I was definitely at my lowest body fat then and happier. I’ve been pretty much running for my mental health because for me it’s like therapy and the side effect is better physical fitness.
I have been suffering injuries for almost 3 years now. I used to do this before my surgery regularly. Literally pushing my limits every Friday for weeks before the start of my season. When i had to have surgery, the Dr. told me that my resting heart rate was 39 which i attributed to my body being pushed neyond my limits and then recovering throughly. I plan on regaining my former glory one day...
Sprinting is more a weightlifters style than long distance running. We prefer the short intensity over the boring, drawn out slow and steady jogs. Plus, it’s arguable that sprinting makes your heart stronger than jogging as well
I do my intensive warm-ups for 30 minutes, then all super sets workouts full body for 1 hour, kind of like a crossfit style, and I'm 38 now. I feel stronger than ever. Thanks for all your advice, Scott. I need to get better at stretching 😆 🤣
Serious question Scott, I'm 5 10 and 21, is there any actual way to increase height at this point? I've lacked cardio most of my life but I have been lifting for the last 3 years, I'm 165 rn. I work on my feet in retail 9 hours a day though so I definitely get my steps in
Hey man! I would say it’s very unlikely you will grow taller if you’re 21. Unless you went through puberty late. But it’s all good man - I’m 5’10 as well, it’s a great height 😁
@ScottHermanFitness I guess there's no harm in doing sprints either way so might as well try, and yeah it's a fine height, just wanted to know if I could squeeze out anymore
Hey scott do you have an app caroline girvan made an app and maybe you could ditch the preworkout and get by with charging for training through an app your old videos are worth allot and i appercaite what you do
My coach would make us do "7 x 100" +read as seven times hundred) on a 400m run track... Run 100m, walk back 50m and repeat this 7 times to reach the spot you start... And yes time yourself. Your heart and legs will be pumped up
30sec-1min sprint? I think you mean run as hard as you can but sprinting that long I don't know. I would say you get about 10- 15sec of true sprinting before your body starts to fall into a rhythm and you slowly lose that hard driving force and enter into hard running rhythm. Also warmup really well before doing any sprinting. As a professional athlete i have seen so many people have torn their muscles sprinting because they didn't warmup correctly.
Yes that is what I mean. It’s easiest to just describe it as a sprint because you want to run as hard as you can for that time period. Warming up is crucial for sure!
I remember I pushed myself to the limit when swimming. It was in club doing a somewhat bleep test and you had to make it on time to the beep before you sprint another 100m.😅
I haven't been able to push past my limits in a little more then a year cause I had an Ankle Replacement so I'm still recovering and its going really slow
Sorry to hear that my friend. Recovering from something like that would be a slower process for sure - keep chipping away at pushing your limits when you can!

You rock Chad! Thanks man!
You could always do sprints on your rowing machine! Just go hard out for 30 seconds - 1 minute and then rest!
I'm 53 and I used to run years ago, not particularly well but I did enjoy the challenge. I'd typically run 2 or 2.5 miles. I started to get sciatica so I stopped for a bit. Same 🙌🙌
High intensity, low volume really is the way to go when it comes to building muscle. It’s way more time efficient, your producing so much mechanical tension which is the driving force behind muscle building, and teaches you mental and physical discipline.
Big facts my friend! Nailed it!

0:20 I was dead when I read HAHHHD and apahhhht 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
haha... it took me like 15 tries to type that out without messing up! LMAO!!!
The music tip in regards to getting in that mindset is phenomenal . Thanks Scott

Wow. Good presentation to the public and straightforward. Exited to start a routine!

The legend!
I'm currently following an "upper/lower/core" split, but prioritizing training my "mental strength"
I noticed that I've always stopped just a bit below my max limit, either with reps or with weight, just overall intensity
Coz I always give up "mentally", when my muscles start to feel a bit sore

Training your mind is just as important! Got to have the mental fortitude to push through pain if you want to break your limits 😎 keep at it!

Yep. Sprinting all out gives me the best feeling of all exercises I do. Nothing like it mentally.
I have heard of this from many other sources aswell I agree it helps tremendously before and after working out
Yeah it’s a well known fact for sure!

Im in this slump for the gym atm. I have gotten into cycling 40km a week though, feels better on my knees. Maybe an over 40s thing now! Next thing lycra! 😂😂
I appreciate these vids and thanks
You could also do cycling sprints if you still want to try this!
Nice one man 👏💪😁👏
Thanks man! 😁💪🏻
Excellent content.
It's correct man, really it's work i mean it. Love from India 😊
It really works Sonu!
Plus, it’s arguable that sprinting makes your heart stronger than jogging as well
Anyone 17😅
Thank you Scott! Can you recommend how to warm up?
I do my intensive warm-ups for 30 minutes, then all super sets workouts full body for 1 hour, kind of like a crossfit style, and I'm 38 now. I feel stronger than ever. Thanks for all your advice, Scott. I need to get better at stretching 😆 🤣
Keeping it real bro
Tomorrow, I’m gonna paaahk my caaaah and try this haaaahd exercise. I’ll keep you updated.
You using your baahbell ?
@@spingybingy5610 Not while sprinting 🤣
I did squats and then did with no weights squats to failure and I felt so much pain and collapsed. A week later my legs were jacked.
Thank you!
Two weeks ago, actually... and then my osteopath said I needed to see him again after two days because I'd done a number on my back and shoulders lol
Tabata protocol. Good stuff.
Great suggestion! I did it first time today 6 sets Holy hell I'm sore and it's been hardest workout I've done in a long time lol
Serious question Scott, I'm 5 10 and 21, is there any actual way to increase height at this point? I've lacked cardio most of my life but I have been lifting for the last 3 years, I'm 165 rn. I work on my feet in retail 9 hours a day though so I definitely get my steps in
Are you stupid??? Lol. Of course there is no way to make yourself taller lol. . Plus 5 10 is not even short for a adult???
No
Just accept it lol
No on here is gonna mention Scott's dank anime choices 😎😎and his recommendation of JJK fan theories..... 👊👋👍👍❤
I felt that way yesterday. I took a flight of stairs. Glad to know its boosting my HGH 771%
Haha damn right!
My favorite natty.
Hey scott do you have an app caroline girvan made an app and maybe you could ditch the preworkout and get by with charging for training through an app your old videos are worth allot and i appercaite what you do
Hello Scottie, how many times a week, we should do this?
Dr Eric berg video 🎉
Interesting topic. I think I might incorporate this and see what effect it has.
I love doing sprints and hate doing distance running. 😊
Im 35 and I get pushed to the limit every single time I go to Jiu-Jitsu class.
I believe it!
Tom Platz blesses this video.
Just sprinted 4 rounds and had to stop cause i felt rlly bad in my stomach, then i quickly went inside and threw up😂
its crazy that this dude doesnt look 40 at all! He seems 33 34 at best its crazy 😂
The weather has gotten better. So why not show us a full outdoor workout?
All the time, Gregg Douchette says, “Train Harder Than Last Time.”
I run 4x200m sprints with 3 minutes rest at 85-90% and it's brutal
when u said u were 39 that just made me instantly click like.
you agein like adamn snail 😂
I remember I pushed myself to the limit when swimming. It was in club doing a somewhat bleep test and you had to make it on time to the beep before you sprint another 100m.😅
I came across your channel in 2009
Hard to believe that you're 39 Scott. You still look so young I thought you were in your late 20's early 30's.
💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I've trained to the point I had to call an Uber to get home and it is just 2km distance from home
I haven't been able to push past my limits in a little more then a year cause I had an Ankle Replacement so I'm still recovering and its going really slow
Sorry to hear that my friend. Recovering from something like that would be a slower process for sure - keep chipping away at pushing your limits when you can!
Did not expect to get spoiled at jujutsu kaisen while watching a video about HGH 😭
Tbf i train to the point where i think I'm rather going to die or I at least feel like crying
How can a hypothyroid woman who wants to body build work around this since hormetic stressors such as HIIT and the like are awful for our thyroid?
Burnout sessions with a boxing bag are another option 👍
