  • There are few actors that are beloved by all, and Nathan Fillion is certainly one of them. The actor’s quick-wit and boyish charm have earned him a well-deserved following in Film and TV. But while you, like most other viewers of this video might know him as the dimple-cheeked, wise-cracking, borderline man-child protagonist of Castle, we first met Fillion as the dashing captain of the Serenity: Malcolm Reynolds. Combining story-telling elements from the world of science fiction with the visual aspects of an Old Western, Firefly made its debut in 2002 to much fanfare. The story was promising: a rogue, war-weathered captain leads his crew in a resistance against an intergalactic ruling authority. The sad part is: we never got to see its end. Firefly was canceled 11 episodes into its run, and has since become something of a cult classic. And this treatment isn’t reserved for TV shows. Throughout the history of television, many iconic TV series’ have fallen prey to early cancellation, and cartoons are no exception.
    We’re fascinated by what could have been. Some popular, unresolved cartoon shows got a proper conclusion years after getting canceled initially; thanks to rabid fan support and changing attitudes in the entertainment industry. We know the stories of Hey Arnold! and cartoon-pioneer Matt Groening’s groundbreaking Futurama series. There are many others still unresolved. In this video, we bring you some of the most underrated cartoon series’ that were canceled too soon, from the Golden Age of Cartoons: the 90’s.

    Gargoyles could have used another season

    • @TotalTech2.
      @TotalTech2. 2 года назад +10

      NO it shouldn't have.
      Let me explain something to you. You know how a lot of shows have 5 seasons and then the 6th is divided into parts 1 and 2 instead of just making season 7 i.e. the Sopranos. The reason for that is because of licensing and actor contracts. Structurally Gargoyles is *EXACTALY* 6 seasons long with 13 episodes per season. It's just that season 2 happened to have 52 episodes where the other ones only had 13. They knew Exactly what they where doing when they made Gargoyles and it has a very cohesive structure and season 6 (I mean 3) had a really good ending where it's implied heavily that Goliath and Eliza start to date
      Then we asked for more and got the god awful Goliath Chronicles
      Also if you want another good season just read the comics

    • @biguy617
      @biguy617 2 года назад +12

      @@TotalTech2. there were a couple of storylines that were never finished. We never fully learned what happened to Cold Stone, Cold Fire and Cold Steel. I always wanted another episode about Goliath’s Rockery brother.

    • @TotalTech2.
      @TotalTech2. 2 года назад +4

      @@biguy617 Glad you bought that up. The reason for that is because it was ordered from the higher ups that there had to be enough ambiguity left at the end in order to 'continue' the series on Disney.
      It's the same reason they don't Really solidify the fact that Goliath and Eliza where together because while the series for all intents and purposes should have and did end there the Disney overlords need a few loose threads to milk the property more

    • @Halbared
      @Halbared 2 года назад +4

    • @PoeticKing21
      @PoeticKing21 2 года назад +2

      @Based Kaiser Honestly I believe Weisman was always political and socially conscious, I can tell that just from watching Gargoyles. If anything, the times of the 90's wouldn't allow him to present his narratives to their full capacity. I don't know how old you are, but I am assuming you watched Gargoyles as a kid so you were probably oblivious to a lot of the social and/or political commentary at that time. Go back and watch it as an adult and you'll see. As for Young Justice, it is socially and politically heavy but it doesn't really bother me and still serves as an escape from the rigors of life for me...🤷🏾‍♂️

    SWAT KATS: Radical Squadron had to be the most violent kids show ever aired (in terms of civilian casualties) and I loved every second of it as a kid. I actually got to ask the show’s creators during a convention panel why it got canceled and they explained that it technically wasn’t. What happened was the higher ups, either at Hanna-Barbera or Turner Broadcasting, refused to let them sell merchandise (which is how all kids shows got their funding back in the day). The toys sold really well, they just weren’t allowed make any more.

    I loved Xtreme Dinosaurs and Street Sharks so much. Also LOVED anything that was animated Street Fighter. I didn't really get to see this cartoon but I do vaguely remember there being animated movies or a series that was darker, always on late at night on HBO or Starz and I wanted to watch it from beginning to end so bad.

    Have you ever done a deep dive into that cult Canadian kid's TV show from 1992-1994, The Odyssey?
    It's 3 seasons of the dreamlike, sometimes bizarre adventures of the young 11-year old Jay Zeigler who goes into a coma after falling from a tree fort and hitting his head, and into a quest in both realities to find his missing, presumed dead, Father.

    I didn't think that Talespin was underrated, now Pirates of Dark Water is underrated and it was left unresolved. Street Fighter the Animated Series had that feel and tone of G.I. Joe from the 1980s and it came out the same time as Darkstalkers all because of the success of Mega Man from 1994. I know some cartoons that underrated, Piggsburg Pigs as well as Gravesdale High, Darkstalkers, and of course Monster Force which came out alongside with Season 2 of ExoSquad and should have been used as the base for Universal's Dark Universe as well.

Firefly aired from September of 2002 until December of 2002 before it was cancelled with the remaining episodes never airing at that time, and Fillion's Caleb did not appear on Buffy until April of 2003 for the series' final 5 episodes. Fillion was very much given the role of Caleb as a consolation after Firefly's cancellation.

    I really miss ExoSquad and Xtreme Ghostbusters, both had awesome stories and diverse, deep, casts of characters. Few shows made me think as deeply as those. I liked Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars too, though it was no where near the same quality.
    I actually watched as many cartoons and anime as I could, up until it all moved to cable and the regular tv blocks died out. It really makes me sad that shows are so consistently locked behind paywalls nowadays. I feel bad for kids that live below the poverty line and don't have the opportunity to enjoy these shows like we did; but I suppose that's what books and playing outside (~shudders~) is for...

    Haven't heard of any of these except for EGB, which is an exceelent show and one any self-respecting Ghostbusters fan should watch, and Biker Mice From Mars.
    And you can say that the 90's was the golden age of cartoons, but you'd be wrong; absolutely nothing on this list could even come close to the likes of The Transformers. ThunderCats, Masters of the Universe and Princess of Power, TMNT, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, Dungeons and Dragons, Jem and the Holograms, and yes, The Real Ghostbusters, to name but a few. The 80's were truly the golden age of cartoons, it all went downhill in the 90's and crashed and burnt in the 2000's.

      I'm a 90s baby, and I'd have to somewhat agree with you:
      Every generation thinks the cartoons they grew up with were the greatest of all time--but if there was a crown for the decade that gave birth to the most influential cartoons/IPs in United States history, then that crown would be awarded to the 1980s. Many of the IPs and cartoons spawned during the 80s still persist (in some form) to this day.

    I think Monster Force is another forgotten, underrated show that deserves a nod too. The animation and character designs were awful. But the story, background music, voice acting, and just overall atmosphere were quite good. It was more mature than it appeared on the surface. And this coming from a life long anime fan! Speaking of anime, the 90's was not really the period when anime began to make a huge mark on the West. Maybe in North America and other English speaking countries. But anime was already pretty big in Europe (outside UK and Ireland) since at least the 80's.
