  • What's cracking, folks! I'm back with another Simple Minds reaction, and this time we listen to the final two songs on their 1980 album Empires and Dance. So join me for a really cool pair of tunes that end this extremely impressive record quite memorably. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on RUclips and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on RUclips, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

    background
Realised in the studio, this instrumental was formed from the feedback, click-clack and effects at the end of Thirty Frames A Second. Hearing a melody in this rythmic cacophony, Charlie and Mick quickly improvised the song as heard.
    background
Although Jim mentioned Room was written for a John Peel session, the song had already appeared live during the first leg of the Real To Real Cacophony tour. The lyrics were originaly much darker, with stories of hanging bodies and carpets stained with blood.
It was formally recorded for Empires And Dance, and became one of the favourite live numbers from that album.

Room sounds more like their previous albums, that I hope you start with next time. Kant Kino is your usual obligatory once-an-album instrumental, always so mesmerizing, if a bit too short. Love that you help make these forgotten tunes known again, thx!

Room always been one of my all time favourite simple minds songs but Kant - kino just wished it was a bit longer matt😊

The abstract instrumental "kant-kino" comes from the name of a venue in Germany (where Simple Minds played a few times). Regarding "Room", you are absolutely right that Jim Kerr's vocals here sound much more like his more mature vocals on future Simple Minds albums than the rest of the Empires and Dance songs.
From these Empires and Dance sessions you still have to listen to "New Warm Skin" which served as the B side of the single "I Travel". 😉

Hey now. How do we get two simple minds reactions in one day but have to wait weeks between Tori Amos reactions? 😜

Haha, I always say, each deep-dive has its own rhythms and particular history, so they shouldn't be seen as "competing with each other." Even so, I will try to get back to Tori in the next few days. Thanks for the patience and understanding!
