Bea Arthur is sooo amazing. That comic walk of shame and her "I was desperate" just shows what a brilliant actress she was.

  • @ericandy88

Even after the hilarity of the story & the way she told it, you have to love how Dorothy finally levels with Mary's father about what he is facing. "She is 16. She is scared...and she is carrying your grandchild. Do you really want to abandon her?"
Behind all the quips & sarcasm, Dorothy's moments of plain talk were always quite underrated. And as she became pregnant at 19 out of wedlock, she knows how that feels.

Oh my goodness, I can't see how Bea Arthur could keep a straight face while doing this scene. It's hysterical. And the, "I was desperate!" line at the end is perfect.

I love how the writers chose Dorothy as the character who would repeat one of Rose's Saint Olaf stories. That and the time when Dorothy mentions the bull-duck who ran a small bed and breakfast in Rhode Island, shows how Rose's persistence wore even Dorothy down.

In the episode Little Sister, where Rose's sister Holly befriends Dorothy and Blanche while leaving Rose out, Dorothy comes in the door laughing hysterically over a story Holly has just told, and says it's one of the funniest she's ever heard. Holly asks, "Doesn't Rose ever tell St. Olaf stories?" And Dorothy says in that mean, scary, way of hers, "All the time."

This is actually one of those stories that makes sense, or maybe I understand it too well. After banishing Fricka, Niels started to feel guilty about what he did but instead of trying to make things right he blamed Brunhilda as she only reminded him of how and why this happened, thus causing him to eat her. In the end he lost both his daughter and his pig all because he could see past his own frustration and admit it was wrong of him to turn his back on her.

Even the "B" word got mentioned a few times on this show, where previously, only daytime soaps & prime time shows like Dynasty used it unabashedly.
I think this show (until its last season, when it moved to an earlier time slot) was on at 9pm, just coming out of the traditional "family hour" of 8:00pm & 8:30pm. Probably since younger kids were in bed by 9pm (or assumed so), more mature dialogue could be uttered then.

An awesome way to have ended this episode would have been the girls following Dorothy into the kitchen...
Blanche: "What do you mean desperate?"
Rose: "You told him St. Olaf stories?!"
Dorothy: "Look! I said I was 'desperate'. As stupid as it sounds, I tried everything and he only listened when I talked about St. Olaf, okay?"
Sophia: "Rose saved you this time, Dorothy."
Rose: "I guess I'm not so stupid after all!"
Dorothy leaves the kitchen and the credits start to play.
