Kelsey Grammer: Frasier gave me family I lost

  • Award-winning actor Kelsey Grammer says one of the greatest gifts from his long-time run as Frasier Crane was having a father and brother in fellow actors John Mahoney and David Hyde Pierce. Grammer details how family scenes were difficult to get through, and what he valued in his TV family, having not spent much time with his actual father before his death.

And his timing. Has there ever been an ensemble that can top this cast for timing each of their lines to orchestrate such hilarious rolling waves of laughter. My favorite is Frazier’s bringing his boss Tom home for dinner unaware of an underlying misunderstanding. The whole crew is like a professional ballet troupe- this episode would be one of ‘desert island’ picks.

You really see the good chemistry between them the cast. John Mahoney and David Hyde is both godfathers of Jane Leeves son. Peri Gilpin is godmother of her daughter and she is godmother of one of Peris children. Close cast.

I'm so glad that Kelsey is commenting on how emotional he would get when filming family scenes and ones that explore character relationships... because I remember my mom saying that of all the actors she's watched Kelsey is one of the VERY few who portrays sadness so well to the point you're not sure if he's even acting - it feels real. When Frasier feels sadness and despair, it just feels different - it feels heavy, genuine and truly forlorn. Frasier Crane is hilarious, but his serious moments made me a bigger fan.

I was a fan of the show from day one. Never missed an episode! Watched the reruns for years! About ten years ago, I bought the series on DVD, and binge watch it a couple-three times a year. Still love it!
Sometimes, after a bad day at work, or in life, I would watch the show, be able to laugh, and forget about my problems for awhile. That probably saved my life.
Thanks for all the laughs, cast and crew. The show still holds up very well thirty years later! Great job!!!

Watching Frasier eps, which I do often on Netflix, is exactly like visiting old friends. It's like these characters are extended family -- they feel real, and you know them so well, and you even know exactly what they're going to do and say, and you love to see it all again regardless. The only other shows I can think of that come close to this are I Love Lucy, and possibly MASH.

I watched this show it's entire run. A few years ago, I bought the DVD, so I can watch as I please commercial free. I still love this show. Especially after a bad day at work, I can watch Frasier, and forget my troubles. At least for a little while.
I grew up in a Toxic family. Both parents were Narcissists. They divorced when I was five, and I spent my life being used by each to hurt the other. Neither cared about me. Abuse and neglect were all I ever knew.
Just before he died, my Dad realized he wasn't the great parent he thought he was, and tried to make things right. Because he tried, I have been able to forgive. I just wish I could forget.
My Mother, half-brother, and step family, thinking they had "won" because they outlived my Dad, grew WORSE in their Toxic behavior, until I finally cut them out of my life six years ago. I was 49 at the time. I don't speak with any of my surviving relatives; all are toxic.
I never had a family of my own. And it's too late to start now. But as Kelsey said here, in a way, when I watch this show, and see the way these people truly care about each other, it's like I'm part of that. At least for a little while.
Hearing how the cast stayed close after the show ended proves family isn't always about who's blood you share. It's about being with people who truly care about you. I admit, I'm a bit jealous of that. No one has cared about me in a long time. I've accepted it, but I don't like it.
Watching Frasier let's me forget all this for a while, and laugh a little. Little? Sometimes I laugh so hard my sides hurt!!!
Thank you, Cast, Crew, and Writers of this show. It's one of the best shows to ever be on TV. Believe it or not, it does help people get through the bad days in life.

When I would come home for Christmas and join them, the one line that caught my attention was when Nigel said, "a handshake is as good as a hug." This was perfectly apropos for my upbringing. I've seen the final episodes several times and didn't realize Frasier didn't take the job but went after the woman he didn't end up with in the end. That really makes me sad.

    • @aryastark575
      @aryastark575 3 года назад

@@denicesanders4586 Why does it make you sad? It was supposed to be nice lol. When the plane lands the girl he's chatting with says she thinks it's great what he's doing & then the announcer welcomes them to Chicago (where Charlotte is) instead of LA (where the job is) & he says "Wish me luck!" We're supposed to assume that he got the girl in the end!

I have a deep abiding fondness for the series. But if I'm honest, it is not perfect; I have issues with a few things, including Daphne somehow falling for Donny the sloppy, chubby little gnome; the way-too-long pining that Niles did over Daphne and how the writers milked it incessantly and put wedges between these two characters; the addition of Mercedes Ruehl as new station manager Kate Costas in the third season because it added nothing good to the mix; and the decrease in overall quality during seasons 7-10 (coincidentally right after Niles and Daphne flee her wedding to Donny).
But even with these shortcomings, "Frasier" remains one of my favorite sitcoms and will always be something I truly cherish, something I return to often for laughs and good memories. There was nothing like it on television before. It was one of those rare showbiz miracles in which an extraordinary team of writers and creative people hooked up with the perfect batch of actors (not unlike "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "The Golden Girls", and "All in the Family"). The result was a treasure. I have to forgive its flaws. I am so grateful that it is available on two major streaming venues, and that I have the choice to watch it in chronological order or to "cherry pick" episode I adore.
