  • Kelsey Grammer was freshly expelled from Juilliard when Edith Skinner referred him to manager Mort Schwartz. Schwartz quickly sent Grammer to a casting session for a ‘fairytale in space.’ Grammer found himself auditioning for Star Wars, to be a ‘gunslinging kind of guy.’ Plus, Grammer details auditioning for Cheers, and getting no laughs.

Old School He was in a TNG season 5 episode “Cause and Effect” where he was a captain who was sent about 90 years into the future. It’s considered one of the best episodes of the show but if you’re watching it for him you may be disappointed since he’s only in the last minute or so of the episode.

    Kelsey Grammer - Han Solo
Davis Hyde Pierce - Luke Skywalker
    Jane Leeves - Princess Leia
    John Mahonney - C3PO
Setting: A Death Star corridor. Han, Luke Leia, C3PO and R2D2 have been running from storm troopers and have ducked for cover in a maintenance closet.
Han looks at Luke who is blankly staring at Leia as she looks out into the corridor for storm troopers.
    Han: "What's wrong with you?"
Luke: "I don't know. Ever since I laid eyes on the princess, I've been filled with a sense of wonder. I've found myself oddly attracted to her."
    C3PO: " 'Odd.' Yep, that's a good description."
Han (gives the droid a quick 'you're not helping' stare over his shoulder then looks at Luke): "Pull yourself together, man. You hardly know the girl."
Leia suddenly turns back to them.
Leia: "I think th' coast is clea'. We shood make a roon for th' hanga' bay." [Technical note: Yes, I'm trying to imitate Dapne's accent for this scene. Sheesh! Critics!]
Han: "Spendid idea. Everyone folllow me."
(Han begins to leave the maintenance bay then suddenly stops just before he reaches its doorway. The others pile into the back of him.)
C3PO: "Oof! Why did you stop?"
Han: "Ah...am I making a left at the next juncture or a right?"
    Luke: "A left."
Leia: "No, I think its a right."
Han looks at both of them. Leia seems confident and Luke stares at her blankly, seemingly oblivious to everything else.
    Han: "So? Which is it?"
    Leia: "Right."
    Luke (staring at her): "Right."
Han looks at Luke and shakes his head.
Han: "So, you think the hangar is to the right, Luke?"
    Luke: "More or less."
C3PO: "If I didn't know any better, I'd say his circuits are fried. My trusty droid companion here says the hangar is to the left. I don't know about the rest of you, but that's where we're going. You can cower here all you wan't."
(The droids make their way past them into the corridor.)
(Han rolls his eyes as Luke continues to stare at Leia. Suddenly she notices and he quickly looks away and notices that Han is giving him an angry scowl.)
Luke (notices the angry stare and shrugs): "What?"
Han (points in the direction of where the droids were walking): "Death Star plans?"
Luke: "Ooh. Almost forgot. Let's go, everyone!"

I could see Kelsey trying to reunite Dark Vader with Luke through cognitive therapy for the sake of mankind and the universe. He probably would loose the rest of hair in the process from all the drama and stress. I'm glad he opted for Cheers instead, he was amazing in that role!!

The original Star Wars wasn't apolitical. George Lucas has said the character of Palpatine was inspired by Nixon. The Vietnam War was also an influence. If you're complaining about politics in the new Star Wars movies (which I don't particularly care for, but I'm chalking that up partly to the fact that I'm not a kid anymore), have you considered that it's because you don't agree with them rather than that they're there?
