Kelsey Grammer: Overcoming abusive marriage

  • Опубликовано: 5 ноя 2019
  • Kelsey Grammer has been married four times, but he says the first three were to the same person; he would often find himself attracted to people who were not doing well. Grammer’s second marriage was rife with abuse, physically and emotionally, and he ended up with a black eye, and having a gun fired at him. He said he often felt the abuse was his responsibility, and that he felt if he was better, he could fix the relationship. Grammer explains why he often felt that he was not good enough, and how he learned to move past that feeling. Plus, he describes his relationship to Kayte, a woman 26-years his junior, but with whom he says he is ‘really well matched.’

Marrying the right person is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make. Your spouse will be your dearest friend or deadliest enemy; safest confidante or most fearsome gossip; trusted adviser or a terrifying manipulator.
This is the person you will be making serious, life-changing decisions with: home, finances, children.
This is the one person who will see you at your most vulnerable: mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually.
    Choose wisely!

@patricedhanis3546 thank you for that comment and similar to the example my therapist gave me. When asked if I was tired of it yet, she described the process as a woman who is 9 months pregnant, tired and so ready to just have the baby and get it over with so she can feel better again. I didn't put much thought to that at the time but it was true. Although we split up and didn't live together, it took me 9 yrs to file for divorce. When I did I knew I was healed and didn't need him anymore. Yet I have anxiety sometimes when I recall an event such as this.

My Ex Husband cheated on me but it was inevitable due to us just becoming different people and being a mis match from the beginning, he just happened to choose the right person while we were married because we both didn't know how to leave each other or communicate it. He married her and is still with her 20 years later. I acted like the spurned wife for a while but then I had a good chat with myself and realised it was just how it was and he did the right thing doing what he did. I too am someone who loved broken women. They came to me like a magnet from my 20s, right up to my late 30s. Now I'm 44. I made a decision a few years ago that I needed to break the exhausting cycle. I'd often blame the broken souls I'd attract, but eventually I looked hard in the mirror and realised IT WAS ME. It was MY FAULT that this cycle kept repeated and that it was ME that was broken - I had to stop trying to fix others, and fix myself. "You are what you attract" is all too true. So I adjusted myself. And adjusted and adjusted and adjusted. Heal, heal, heal. Now I'm with someone who is NOT broken or toxic, because I'm no longer broken or toxic myself. Healthy you = healthy relationship. That's not to say we don't have challenges and things to work on - we ALWAYS do. There's always some growth and evolution happening. But if we want our relationships healthy, we have to make OURSELVES healthy. Now having said all that - I also don't advocate or justify his choices... his selection of partners says a lot about himself, and there's some narcissism that's evident. However, he DOES sound like he's looking hard at himself and that he's moving towards some kind of peace.

Fear of rejection causes one to seek out a person that they think they can save. Subconsciously this is a form of control, thinking that the person will recognize your value. How does that make sense? I believe his children are grown up. And probably KNOW the dynamics. To LIE about it, pretending that someone (who is abusive) is NOT abusive ... is a little crazy.

Some of these comments are truely sad. The man stated that one of his exs shot a gun at him, gave him a black eye and yet people are blameing him for marrying that woman. He said himself the early marriages were a mistake he made, marrying an unstable spouse to "save them" is a tragic mistake many of us have done. As someone who also made the mistake of marrying to "save" someone I can not begin to express how much of a mistake it is. When you're with a spouse that you're trying to "save" it is like your life is on hold, the relief when you leave that situation feels like you can breath again, live again. It actually surprises me to read that almost all of the comments here blame Kelsey for being in this abusive relationship. But quite truthfully, not being in his position and having his perspective, you can't really understand why he was in that relationship and having a broken relationship like that does make you do things you wouldn't want to do. It makes you seek validation while simultaneously self-destructing and doing things you are not proud of.
It is really difficult to get yourself out of this vicious circle and somebody watching from afar may think that he is just finding excuses for himself, but so often it is really difficult to step away from the abuse and until you can really do it, you just step back into that circle until you have the mental fortitude to overcome it and actually make a change.
It is so easy to comment as somebody not in that situation, I do hope that none of the commentators end up in such a situation but perhaps it would allow the perspective necessary to understand him.

Not sure if all these subjective names and ideas for things and the way people are is always helpful.

Honestly no. With abuse there will always be human fecal matter trying to blame the victim, male or female. However men are less likely to be believed or supported because of how men are perceived in society. Abuse victims in general need way more support.

He really reminds me of my Dad (and Mom) Not lucky in love, tried to do his own thing, she wanted more... Married the same kind of person a few times-each with varying degrees of shifting personal baggage. He had his own mental/family history struggles/traumas/vices to get through before and during child-rearing... Personally, I don't care what age lady he finds attractive, or what her motivation is. I'm just glad he seems to have sorted it all out. Therapy can do some good, but it can only go so far. And it's much better to leave a toxic relationship than try to stay and fix a person who doesn't want to be "fixed'. You either grow apart, or you grow together. Either way, your gonna grow until you die. 🤔❤️🤷‍♀️
