Actually building a new setup for my R6 right now. I got the Tilta V-mount plate so I could power the Ninja as well as the camera body through V-mount. I’ll look into the mini v-mount batteries though. Thanks for the tip

The 0.64 really only vignettes in photo mode. I've never noticed vignetting on my GH5/Sigma 18-35/0.64 metabones system when shooting video, and I shoot as wide angle as possible a lot of the time with that lens. You've inspired me to want to do an update video on my GH5 rig for 2021 as I have changed a few things since I put out my last rig video a couple years ago now. I think the GH5 is still relevant to the right user base and still has a place in 2021.
I still say the GH5 is one of the best bang for your buck cameras for hybrid shooters. Perfect camera for my work flow. Only reason o changed the setup is because I’ve been doing more work with lowlight in areas where I can’t bring lights with me, so I needed to go back to full frame. If it wasn’t for that I’d be using this camera till 2022 probably lol

I might give that one a shot, how’s the shape (no pun intended lol) on it. Ideally I’d want a cable with a 90 degree angle on both ends to stay out of the way of my left hand if I were to use a left handle again
Thanks! My rig is very similar. I like the V mount! I went with dual Sony's set up so I could hot swap. Realistically I think the big V mount is better. I did away with the Ninja V battery using one battery setup to power everything. Because of the Ninja V fan I mounted the mic on an extender a few inches in front and off to the side. I think it reduced the noise a little.

Wonderful rig! Why didn´t you use the V-mount battery to power the Ninja V too? As for the matte box It looks great but if you change lenses like I do (Because I use native MTF primes) then It´d be more convenient to have the matte box attached to the rails instead! I don’t change lenses too often, I recently picked up the sigma 50-100 (amazing piece of glass for this camera btw) but I don’t really switch to it for the video work i do. That 18-35 basically lives on my camera lol. The 50-100 only comes out for stills for me.
The only suggestion I would say to improve your build is get one of the V-mount power base plates instead of the dummy base locking plate. Power both your camera and the monitor off the v-mount battery, with spare capacity for anything else in the future. I have had no luck with good battery life with Sony NPF style batteries and I have way too many of them. To be able to power all my gear off one V-mount system has made a hugh difference in my setup, and not having to haul around 2 or 3 extra NPF batteries to power my monitor and it saves a little bit of weight (you already have the weight of the v-mount battery, the additional weight of the power mount v-mount base is less than the weight of a sony NPF battery.

Haha whatever makes the rig work best for you, rigs are cool to me because it shows a bit of everyone’s personality, and none of us shoot the exact same clients so we all have different needs.
With the GH5 battery being so good the v mount seems unnecessary. Plus it surely blocks access to buttons and screen at the back? Nice breakdown though 👍. Thanks 👌
I actually put the vmount on and started building the rig because once the ninja was hooked up the battery would get drained pretty quickly. So I felt it was necessary
Right angle or left angle connector for the hdmi. Will allow you to use the wooden handle. Try the Noga arm to attach your monitor. You can grab the arm to stabilize the rig.
I’ve had the right angle cable, I still ended up normally having one hand on the top handle and the other pulling focus. And at this point with the rigs I’m keeping the setups as small as humanly possible. I have to do an update on my more recent setup soon.
Great video. I love that setup. I’m about a third of the way there. It looks like that sigma is everyone’s fave lens. I might have to follow suit and grab one. And a metabones. And an atmos ... 😄
@@SwaytekDigital I’m just curious how much more you get from the 18-35 over the LUMIX 12-35 native lens for run/gun. Obviously the sigma is a faster lens, but is it that much sharper? Are there any drawbacks when you’re running all manual like that?
@@Redreefmedia I never did any back and forth testing when I owned both lenses. But I preferred the look of the sigma over the Lumix glass 100x over. And I prefer pulling focus manually when it comes to doing client work. I only really use autofocus for talking head stuff or Vlog style videos. So no real drawback for me in that regard

The GH5S would give you that buttery detail in low light and you'd be able to rock the other metabones if you wanted. It is more money though. And a question - have you thought about running the Atomos off of your D-Tap battery? You can, with the eliminator. Might save you a bit of weight.
I never wanted to get rid of the buttery IBIS from the GH5 so that’s was the main reason for not getting the GH5S, this was actually my 2nd GH5 lol. And I had considered running it off D-Tap as well but by that time I eventually joined the Darkside known as Canon. So there will be a new rig video coming soon 😉
@@SwaytekDigital Hey bro....yes it did....the step up ring part really helped as i have a Sigma 85mm Art and that thread is 86mm, so a step up ring should help with that matte box.
I have a very similar setup. You can power the GH5 with a USB dummy battery and use the DTAP for Atomos so the rig can be slightly lighter. (That’s if your battery has a USB port)
very nice and detailed vid. I have one main concern though. I keep hearing from time to time that powering the GH% or basically any mirrorless cam via D-Tap will fry the camera. What's your say on the matter?
I'm not sure I've ever heard about that being an issue for mirrorless cameras. I know that can be an issue for some RED cameras, but I've personally had no issues with D-Tap on any rig I've mad with the last 4 camera bodies I've owned.

I take off the mic and and Ninja V and put the entire rig assembled in a Husky tool bag I had bought a while back. It works really well for this actually. The bag its self has a somewhat rigid shell, and there are a ton of pockets and compartments to hold batteries, memory cards and anything I'd need to bring on a shoot.
Great video, but if your showing black items, it’s probably best to not wear a black shirt. And also you seriously wave your hands about a lot, if you could keep the hand that’s holding what your talking about steady long enough for an old guy like me to focus on it, it would be a big help. Other than these minor issues, it was great.

@@UraFlight haven’t had this setup in a while, I’m using different camera bodies now, but from what I remember that wasn’t an issue. Also being that I was able to put in the dummy battery after the base plate was already mounted, tells me it was pretty accessible.

Hi everyone! I can't figure out one thing about follow focus. People buy Nuclear Nano motors, Tilta follow focus systems etc. Why no one makes just a knob, that can be plugged into GH5 micro usb port? So that focusing is controlled by that knob. I am talking about lenses with their own motors like popular Sigma 18-35. My Moza Aircross 2 has a knob that can control GH5's focusing. Please someone just produce that KNOB!
I’m assuming they haven’t made it yet just because it’s more of a “universal fit” when the follow focus attaches to the lens. If someone owns a purely manual lens, plugging into the camera wouldn’t let the lens be controlled. And also cost for manufacturers, im guessing it would cost a lot more to make a follow focus system for each brand of camera as opposed to just making one system that can work with every camera.
Not sure if the Ninja V allows for that, the highest frame rate I’ll shoot in for my clients is 60fps which the Ninja V allows, I’ve honestly never used any of the higher frame rates on this camera

I can answer this. This isn't a Ninja V limitation, but rather a limitation of the GH5 and the GH5s, which only output 4k60 via HDMI. Any higher frame rates need to be recorded internally.
If I were you I'd power the Ninja with the V mount. The Ninja is a lot more power hungry than the GH5 and when you put that giant ass NPF on the Ninja you have a lot of weight way up high and off to the side. In my case the rig is normally on sticks so it's not a big problem.
Gerald Prost as crazy as it sounds, having some weight up top actually helps the setup a bit, because it makes it easier to tilt moves since all the weight isn’t below the top handle. And surprisingly the big ass NPF battery doesn’t tilt the camera to the side much if at all. But I’m definitely going to be changing to running V-mount for the Atomos in the future.
@@SwaytekDigital That's interesting. I like the idea of powering everything off the v-mount but I'll experiment with the NPF on the Atomos to see how it affects balance.
I had the idea of the rig looking like this before I purchased everything. So when I had measured the length of the body with the sigma lens on it, I pretty much guesstimated that I’d need the 12” one if I wanted to support a different matte box or another accessory up front. 8” would be fine I think if you don’t need to mount anything on the rods up front
I have a question about this rig. I am also using the GH5, viltrox speed booster and the small rig but I’ve noticed the viltrox speed booster makes it impossible to switch lenses because it doesn’t have enough space to twist off due to the smallrig. Am I missing something or do I have to take the rig off every time?
The lens should be able to come off the adapter, even with the cage on. Now if you wanna take off the adapter while the cage is on, it might be getting stuck on that weird flat piece on the bottom of the adapter. That piece can come off on the metabones speedbooster, I think it comes off for the viltrox as well.

Other question: what do you think about the Tilta Nucleus Nano paired with one of their focus side handles? I've been thinking it would solve any shakiness issues when adjusting focus.
@@BluFabie I think the weight was about 10/11 pounds, I think I mentioned it in the video. And I was actually using the cheaper tilta follow focus for a bit but got rid of it. It was actually more stable for me to just hold the focus ring on the lens for a second point of contact. When I'm shooting, I'm constantly changing focus so my hand rarely leaves the lens.
If you timed your purchase, you could’ve skipped the speedbooster and got the Panasonic Lumix s5. The body was just on sale for $1997 with a free xlr1 adapter, extra free battery and extra free Ush1 memory card. Body alone essentially $1400-1500(assuming you sold all the free extras at market value which you most definitely can). If you take into account the cost of the mats ones speed booster, the s5 falls within $100 range of the gh5. I think at that price, the s5 is insane. It can do 5.9k 12bit protea raw with atomic ninja v. For $1500 ish? Gotta be kidding me.
I had the GH5 almost a year before I shot this video, and I got it used, so there was no way I could have timed that purchase lol. And I don’t like any of the lenses that work natively for the S5 so I’d still end up buying an adapter again.

S5 is a completely different beast. FF have a huge rolling shutter problem and ghosting because of the larger sensor, the M43 doesn’t because it’s smaller. The GH6 is coming out with more MP and different flavors of sensor like the GH5 line. M43 is perfect for run and gun.
@@TheFaustianMan if Panasonic can somehow get some better lowlight out of that sensor and give me a better autofocus system I just might switch back, I’m shooting with the R6 now so I feel you on the rolling shutter issues, I miss M43 lol
I’ll try to improve it in my next videos, this isn’t how I normally shoot videos for my clients so I don’t put too much thought into the setup here. Just put on my secondary camera and hit record lol

A tip if ur still using the rig. Buy a nitze v mount plate. Tiny but wonderful and Came tv mini v mount batteries.

Using an actual v mount plate was in the game plan actually. Switched cameras now though so I’m going to be revamping the entire rig.

Would probably need a deeper matte box to block light from the sides, but I never ran into issues with this setup

Yeah, I rarely use 60fps or higher unless it’s for shooting boudoir, and even then I’m shooting 24fps for 95% of my boudoir work

I take off the mic and and Ninja V and put the entire rig assembled in a Husky tool bag I had bought a while back. It works really well for this actually. The bag its self has a somewhat rigid shell, and there are a ton of pockets and compartments to hold batteries, memory cards and anything I'd need to bring on a shoot.

The setup was for mainly indoor shooting so no VND needed, if i shot outdoors with it, then the matte box came off and VND went on

I don’t remember honestly, I never expect any battery I buy to be charged, so I normally slap them on the charger the minute I open them

@@UraFlight haven’t had this setup in a while, I’m using different camera bodies now, but from what I remember that wasn’t an issue. Also being that I was able to put in the dummy battery after the base plate was already mounted, tells me it was pretty accessible.

@@UraFlight I have both the R5 and R6 so I can definitely make a rig build video for that. I have 2 versions of the rig as well, a light weight version and a fully built out one, so I can make a couple videos if need be.

No direct way to hook up the Ninja V to the V mount. They have a port for it on the Shinobi but not for the Ninja. If I could I would lol

Hi everyone! I can't figure out one thing about follow focus. People buy Nuclear Nano motors, Tilta follow focus systems etc. Why no one makes just a knob, that can be plugged into GH5 micro usb port? So that focusing is controlled by that knob. I am talking about lenses with their own motors like popular Sigma 18-35. My Moza Aircross 2 has a knob that can control GH5's focusing. Please someone just produce that KNOB!
I’m assuming they haven’t made it yet just because it’s more of a “universal fit” when the follow focus attaches to the lens. If someone owns a purely manual lens, plugging into the camera wouldn’t let the lens be controlled.
And also cost for manufacturers, im guessing it would cost a lot more to make a follow focus system for each brand of camera as opposed to just making one system that can work with every camera.

How do you shoot in slow motion ( VFR ) with gh5?
the ninja v records in normal speed.... I have been looking for two weeks...
Not sure if the Ninja V allows for that, the highest frame rate I’ll shoot in for my clients is 60fps which the Ninja V allows, I’ve honestly never used any of the higher frame rates on this camera

I can answer this. This isn't a Ninja V limitation, but rather a limitation of the GH5 and the GH5s, which only output 4k60 via HDMI. Any higher frame rates need to be recorded internally.
If I were you I'd power the Ninja with the V mount. The Ninja is a lot more power hungry than the GH5 and when you put that giant ass NPF on the Ninja you have a lot of weight way up high and off to the side. In my case the rig is normally on sticks so it's not a big problem.
Gerald Prost as crazy as it sounds, having some weight up top actually helps the setup a bit, because it makes it easier to tilt moves since all the weight isn’t below the top handle. And surprisingly the big ass NPF battery doesn’t tilt the camera to the side much if at all.
But I’m definitely going to be changing to running V-mount for the Atomos in the future.

I was wondering why did you choose 12” vs 8” 15mm rods?
I had the idea of the rig looking like this before I purchased everything. So when I had measured the length of the body with the sigma lens on it, I pretty much guesstimated that I’d need the 12” one if I wanted to support a different matte box or another accessory up front. 8” would be fine I think if you don’t need to mount anything on the rods up front
Are most gh5 parts universal with the gh5s?
I believe so, as long as you have a cage to fit the GH5s everything else can be built around that in a really similar fashion to my setup here
I have a question about this rig. I am also using the GH5, viltrox speed booster and the small rig but I’ve noticed the viltrox speed booster makes it impossible to switch lenses because it doesn’t have enough space to twist off due to the smallrig.
Am I missing something or do I have to take the rig off every time?
The lens should be able to come off the adapter, even with the cage on.
Now if you wanna take off the adapter while the cage is on, it might be getting stuck on that weird flat piece on the bottom of the adapter. That piece can come off on the metabones speedbooster, I think it comes off for the viltrox as well.

Nope took it like a champ, it was my A7Sii with the 50mm f1.8. Fell perfectly on the bottom of the body so it took no damage 😅
Can you get a light on top with the monitor?
A small LED light can be mounted on the cold shoe of the matte box if I really need it.

Other question: what do you think about the Tilta Nucleus Nano paired with one of their focus side handles? I've been thinking it would solve any shakiness issues when adjusting focus.
@@BluFabie I think the weight was about 10/11 pounds, I think I mentioned it in the video. And I was actually using the cheaper tilta follow focus for a bit but got rid of it. It was actually more stable for me to just hold the focus ring on the lens for a second point of contact.
When I'm shooting, I'm constantly changing focus so my hand rarely leaves the lens.

If you timed your purchase, you could’ve skipped the speedbooster and got the Panasonic Lumix s5. The body was just on sale for $1997 with a free xlr1 adapter, extra free battery and extra free Ush1 memory card. Body alone essentially $1400-1500(assuming you sold all the free extras at market value which you most definitely can). If you take into account the cost of the mats ones speed booster, the s5 falls within $100 range of the gh5. I think at that price, the s5 is insane. It can do 5.9k 12bit protea raw with atomic ninja v. For $1500 ish? Gotta be kidding me.
I had the GH5 almost a year before I shot this video, and I got it used, so there was no way I could have timed that purchase lol. And I don’t like any of the lenses that work natively for the S5 so I’d still end up buying an adapter again.

S5 is a completely different beast. FF have a huge rolling shutter problem and ghosting because of the larger sensor, the M43 doesn’t because it’s smaller. The GH6 is coming out with more MP and different flavors of sensor like the GH5 line. M43 is perfect for run and gun.
@@TheFaustianMan if Panasonic can somehow get some better lowlight out of that sensor and give me a better autofocus system I just might switch back, I’m shooting with the R6 now so I feel you on the rolling shutter issues, I miss M43 lol

I’ll try to improve it in my next videos, this isn’t how I normally shoot videos for my clients so I don’t put too much thought into the setup here. Just put on my secondary camera and hit record lol
