Alright, The one who starts is Adam Chance, Tim Foust is their bass, Austin Brown is their high tenor, Rob Lundquist is their bearded tenor. Their super amazing beatboxer is Adam Rupp

Hey Randy :) Thanks so much for this! Adam Rupp's beat on this track is absolutely fantastic. I loved how they were able to keep the heart of the sea shanties while making them super exciting! How long have you been a fan of the guys?

Also... Tim's party trick is to explode subwoofers... and I'm not joking. He's ruined probably around $50,000 in professional-grade speakers with his sub-harmonic 0 range

  • @m.b.6402
    @m.b.6402 3 года назад +60

Home Free is practically the definition of "smart harmonies." If I could only have one acapella group (agony!) it would be these five guys. They range from pure old-school old-timey country to R&B to the rare Disney song to religious classics to...Oh, it just goes on. And to each they play in the spirit of the style and the heart of the song. They AIM at doing the best version of the song they can do...and it's not just to show off their chops. Frex, this particular medley they stick very much to traditional styles and harmonies, because that's kind of the soul of shanties, designed as work songs for ordinary shmoes to be able to sing well.
They're pretty much all high-level trained--I believe four are degreed? Several have serious range. Tim, the bass, has a five-octave spread that's just scary. They make sure to swap around leads, and explore their limits, which is always fascinating. Austin, their high-tenor, pops your ears and pulls the oxygen out of the room he goes so high. Chance (Adam Chance) is their baritone-bass and he's solid as oak: he's the guy who started this video. Rob, their wheel-horse tenor--the guy with the great moustache--wails. I mean, it's not that Austin can't do runs and trills and fancy ornamentation--but Rob breaks your heart when he lets loose. And then there's Adam Rupp, the beatboxer. He's a world champion--literally. The common reaction to him is that he "swallowed a drum kit." More than a drum kit--damn-near every instrument in the orchestra and a few that are seldom found outside the fringes.
But the heart of it is that with all that power and versatility, they obviously love the music, from the sacred heights of "How Great Thou Art," to the outright silly-ass goofiness of "Gramma Got Run Over by a Reindeer." They give it to you pure and lovely and with its own heart intact. Instead of using the songs as showcases for their talents, they use their talents to showcase the songs--to tell their listeners what THEY love about those songs.
They're a good group. Now, go forth young man and drop down the rabbit hole! You're in for some very good times.

Adam Chance, started the song, he’s a baritone/bass. Austin Brown is the high tenor in red here with the sword. Rob Lundquist is a tenor with the glasses. Adam Rupp is the amazing beatboxer. Home Free won the NBC show the Sing Off in 2013 the year after Pentatonix won. They are primarily country but sing all genres and sing them well. They have incredible harmonies. Try Helplessly Hoping, Country Roads, How Great Thou Art, I Can’t Outrun You. They sing a lot of covers but also write and sing their own stuff. For country songs--Down To The Honky Tonk, Champagne on a Beer Budget (HF original song), Hillbilly Bone (for more of Tim's bass) Ring of Fire, Man of Constant Sorrow and My Church. Style changes: The End of the Road (Boyz II Men cover), All About That Bass, and The Butts Remix. And then Mayday, somewhere in these last mentioned songs. And also gospel songs... Most people refer to Home Free as "country", and yes they may have a country background, but that description is a bit of a misnomer. There is not a genre of music in the world that they can't cover, and do it very well! I think a lot of people don't bother listening to them because of the "country" reference ... when in fact they would probably enjoy the music if they gave it a chance.

What makes their harmony even more amazing is that they were all in different locations, due to the pandemic. They released quite a few new videos in "quarantine mode" during the last 14 months. Rob (beard & great mustache) and Adam (beatboxer) are in Minnesota. Adam Chance "Chance" (red beanie) is in Los Angeles. Tim (bass, Jack Sparrow) and Austin (red shirt & sword) are in Nashville. They each record their audio & video & then send it to their producers to put together. They do a lot of original stuff, but also a lot of covers. Some of my favorites are "American Pie" (which features Don McLean, the original artist & also who wrote the song), "In the Blood", "My Church", and "Take Me Home Country Roads". To be honest, I have yet to listen to a bad song from Home Free (or even one that was less than stellar). Enjoyed your reaction. (I have trouble sitting still when I listen to this one as well. LOL.)

That's possibly the next place to go, and i Know you will really enjoy this listening experience as you go :)

Firstly, welcome to Home Free. I'll run through the guys for you, starting with the bass - Tim Foust (the one dressed most like Jack Sparrow) can hit notes most guys can only dream of and is also the unofficial spokesman for the group (with a voice like his why wouldn't he). Then you have the baritone - Adam Chance (the one who started this medley off, and mainly referred to as Chance for reasons that will become clear in a moment) who has such a smooth vocal style and has brought such depth to the group since joining in 2016 (when he replaced the founder Chris Rupp who went to try some solo stuff.....also worth checking out sometime). This leads nicely to the beatboxer/vocal percussionist/freak of nature (as he is sometimes affectionately referred to) - Adam Rupp, Chris' brother, co-founder of the group back in 2000 and the reason why Chance is referred to in that way, also the man whose ability to make every noise that can possibly be made with the human mouth (and several that really shouldn't be possible) is truly astounding. The group's lead tenor - Rob Lundquist (impressive moustache and beard) with some of the silkiest vocals you could ever hear and a personality to match. And last (but in no way least) - high tenor Austin Brown (red shirt and sword) does at the high end of the scale what Tim does at the low end, and with vocal runs for days. Individually they would each be amazing, but put them together and you have something truly out of this world (as you will discover).

Watch "when a man loves a woman" butts medley, all in the blood, iw great thou art,, and country fried pop medley. These ones should give you an idea of how versatile they are. Then when you are more familiar with the group you need to watch Mayday, but not until you are familiar with all 5 of their strengths. It will blow your mind!!

New sub because I am a huge Home Fry and I think you'll love it. To get a good intro to the group and what they can do I'd start with Man of Constant Sorrow and Helplessly Hoping. Stay AWAY from Mayday until you know them better. If you do earlier stuff like Ring of Fire, you will notice Adam Chance (first singer in this video) is not there. He was added about 2017ish?). Chris and Adam Rupp (the beat boxer) started the group years ago, first adding Tim Foist as permanent bass, the. Austin Brown (met him when he was singing on a cruise ship) then Adam Chance (who goes by Chance) when Chris left the group for a solo career. They had toured for years when they went on the Sing Off (with Chris Rupp) and won. Chance will carry bass when Tim takes lead vocal. This will help you not get confused when you watch earlier stuff. They often have friends, girlfriends (some now ex) and wives I'm their videos and they seem like a really awesome group. For their funny side try the Butts Remix or Hillbilly Bone. Have fun!

So glad you caught Adam Rupp's castanet sounds in Santiana!! You definitely need to check out more of their videos - there are a ton of them, but I would definitely suggest Take Me Home Country Roads, Man of Constant Sorrow, and End of the Road. And as someone else commented - do not react to Mayday until you've done several other songs first. And for a truly powerful video, check out "One Voice" that was released this past Friday - Home Free and Billy Gilman (who first released the song when we was about 12 years old - 20 years ago). I just subscribed - looking forward to seeing more of your reactions and videos!

The lineup you see here has been steady for 5 years now. Until early 2016, Adam Rupp's brother Chris was still in the group. They founded Home Free over 20 years ago. You will see him in their older videos, almost always wearing a cowboy hat or a ball cap. Chris handpicked his replacement; he wanted to do solo work and does to this day, and collaborates with various members of Home Free. We love Chris!
Adam Rupp: beatboxer extraordinaire, vocally a tenor (you will hear him on pure a capella covers). From Minnesota.
Rob Lundquist: "The Beard", tenor with a silky voice but can inject grit when he wants. Joined 2008. Also from Minnesota.
Tim Foust: here dressed as Capt Jack Sparrow; he is their deep bass (with a 5 octave range at least!) Joined 2012. From southeast Texas. Tim used to have long hair, cut it last year.
Austin Brown: dressed as Sinbad; he's the high tenor (amazing voice not squeaky up high). Joined 2013. From Georgia.
Adam Chance: first singer, has the squinty popeye merchant sailor vibe down pat. Joined in 2016 as baritone but is a very skilled bass. From Alabama.
Their videos are so much a part of what makes them so enjoyable (in addition to their stellar vocal abilities!) Some of my recommendations:
    Honey, I'm Good
    Man of Constant Sorrow
    Folsom Prison Blues
    Elvira (with Oak Ridge Boys)
    End of the Road
    I Swear
    In the Blood
    Die a Happy Man
    Woman, Amen/Female
    Moonshine
    Meet in the Middle
Mayday (don't do this one until you have established with several videos who does what)
Snowglobe (same as Mayday; do this one after a few others)
Butts Remix (total gut-buster, extreme fun)
Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget
