I have done a little research into sea shanties in the past. From what I've gathered a sea shanty does 3 things. You've touched on two of them. 1.) Moral. On long voyages it gets rather monotonous when all you've seen for the past week is blue ocean all around and no land or other ships in sight. 2.) Singing helps pass the time. These will not necessarily be shanties but anything that the shantyman can recall or make up at the time. 3.) Keep rhythm. This is the most important thing. A good shanty keeps the rhythm of a task whether it be a short haul, halyard or capstan shanty. The Wellerman and Drunken sailor are good examples of a capstan shanty. A capstan shanty was used among other things to pull up an anchor. A group of sailors would gather around a capstan which is basically a horizontal wheel and they would push it around in a circle winding the anchor chain around the wheel pulling it up. With every beat of the song everyone would take a step. A good example of a long haul shanty (used for pulling up a mainsail) is Haul away Joe. During the stanzas that the shantyman sings you are at rest. When it gets to the chorus you proceed to put both hands on the rope and at "Joe" everyone pulls at the same time.
I absolutely could not LOVE your analysi of Home Free's meta-purpose of spreading joy more than I did in my very first reaction here! You freaking made me cry, Dave!!! 🤯
Austin gets to really show off his musical theater training here! And Adam with the castanets? Really? Yep! It was nice to hear Rob singing lead in a bit lower register instead of all the higher stuff. Not saying that Rob ever sounds bad, it was just great to showcase more of his range. Chance was the reason for this medley. I guess he's always liked them and with the TikTok trend of sea shanty videos, it was a perfect time to do this. And Tim... what can you say? Tim did what Tim does! Rock solid bassline holding everything together with Adam! Great reaction as always! And you're right, Home Free is addictive. They are just great medicine for whatever ails you! ❤
This is one of those comments where adding a single thumbs up seems so inadequate. And @Chris Moran is the only one I've seen comment on Rob's lead vocals in a lower, something that I noticed after watching the Home Free video only a dozen or two times. I mean, none of the upper echelon reactors seemed to notice that. Other than that though, outstanding reaction and chair dancing Dave.
That was what I've through watching this video over and over. Austin nails how a bit crazy Jack Sparrow acts and does with his eyes and hands. Austin has that down!! lol
Tim (the bass) is standing very still because he is in a little boat in his yard and he doesn’t want to fall out! Loved Adam Rupp’s “castanets” in the last song, and he threw in some boat splashes too. Nice to hear Adam Chance’s lovely warm baritone - it was his idea to do these sea shanties and he talked the other guys into it. Really fun and I enjoyed your reaction. Thank you!
They did this is response to the TikTok craze over sea shanties that has been going on for the last several months. In the original sea shanty days, ships often had fiddlers or pipes (or both if the crew was big enough) that would accompany the shanty. The really cool thing about these simple songs is that they are easy to learn, easy to sing along with, and with even basic choral singing skills it's easy to find a harmony for your vocal range. (I love singing with Tim, myself...) but you hit the nail on the head when you said that this kind of music is a drug (I know you said that in reference to Home Free - which makes it doubly true) - but shanties are a way to make hard, repetitive labor less difficult and make the time pass more quickly. But Adam doing those castanets along with such realistic tom-tom drums was SO cool!
They have it on Tiktok and many people are doing videos of themselves singing with it on Tiktok now. Pretty cool! This just shows how versatile they are.
I just went to their TikTok duets! There are some very very talented people doing the duets! I admit I headed straight for Luke the Voice's account! For only being 19, that young man has some pipes!
You can never go wrong with Home Free. I did notice that Chance is wearing a different shirt at the beginning of the video. It's as though there's a gradual progression of pirate attire. Chance ends up wearing a shirt with a whale graphic. Rob's mustache and bandana. Adam's shirt and scarf belt. Austin's wearing a little more pirate attire and then of course, Capt. Tim Sparrow in full on pirate wear. I love watching your reaction to Home Free videos.
Poor Chance has been catching such grief over that shirt. This was released before the war in Ukraine, but the Z on the shirt is interpreted as support for Russia. He was supposed to be dressed as the Bill Murray character in The Life Aquatic.
Can we talk about how phenomenal Adam Rupp is with the beat boxing? He was amazing in American Pie and he has raised the bar even farther in this song/video
Adam: Prince Eric, Austin: Pirate, Rob: Biker/Lumberjack Pirate, Tim: Captian Jack, Chance: worker on the ship. Tim was on a boat and had eyeliner. Austin had eyeshadow. Sea Shanties were made to keep the pace of work on the boat.
I adore Chance's seaman's cap and whaling shirt - and the tattoo. Anything Home Free touches is GOLD!!!! Great reaction as usual, Dave. Thank you so much!! Makes you want a mug of rum, doesn't it! 🤣❤
Arrrrrgh Dave Matey ! Most enjoyable Home Free hit's another HOME RUN ! did you notice the castenets sound by Adam ? Was that genius ? Oh man this has jumped to my top 10 Home Free list
Austin is so into it, he could be doing the acting for Tim and his self. Chance is the one that wanted to do this. He loves Folk music and Sea Shanties. Great reaction Dav.
This one is loads of fun to watch! You are so on point about Home Free being like a drug. They do make us feel great and very happy (unless it’s a serious song, but even then they draw us in with emotion)! I listen to Home Free more than anything else, and I was an avid Classic Rock fanatic prior to finding Home Free! I do still love Classic Rock and 90’s Alternative! I really enjoyed your reaction, Dave! Maybe you could check out another of Austin’s solo songs. He just released a new original called “If I Met You Now” and it’s beautiful and am the video is amazing, too!
Great comments you made. And yes, it's impossible to be angry at the end of a Home Free video. FYI sea shanties were work songs. Hoisting the sails (for example) required coordinating a lot of sailors and "Way, way up she rises" was a good way to do that. Professional sea shanties singers were hired by boats (maybe not pirates) for just this purpose. Those songs also helped with the morale of the troops (as you said). Another piece of trivia: The Wellerman (first song of the medley) is NOT a sea shanty, but a folk song about a whaling ship doomed to forever pursue a whale.
That said, the rhythm of The Wellerman is a capstan turner. Before electric winches, the sailors provided the power for winches and you didn't want to let go at the wrong time. Many broken bones resulted from capstan handles.
Man I love coming and watching you! You just have one of those cool cat jazz kinda vibes Where we could sit and listen to and talk about music for hours and I love it! This medley always gets me feeling happy it's just so fun!
Love your reaction Dave! Home Free sure knows how to make it fun and make you feel like dancing!! I just discovered them a few weeks ago and they are already my new favorite group ever!!
Covid-19 Isolated. They are individually in their Homes!! Sea Shanties pro forth "Louie Louis..: After many years answering to the meaning?? Finally resolved as a "Sea Shanty" Great Reaction!!
Your comments during the pauses, especially when you got to the idea of community helping people through tough times, are what earned you a new subscriber. That and your deep voice and friendly demeanor. Looking forward to catching up on your videos.
Looked like you were having a ball! Loved hearing your into about sea shanties. I had never heard of them until HF came out with this. They said Chance loves them and they've teased him about it for a while. But they went for it and gave it all they had on this! I loved how the speed kept picking up until at the end you feel like just jumping up and don in your seat!! Awesome as they always do!! Take care.
Love your comments. Shanties also helped the deck men working in rhythm in their work. Like many songs, the beat had the bodies moving in sync just like marches do with armies. I love shanties! Thanks for your observations!
I actually went on TikTok and Home Free has the shanty videos split up and they are encouraging people to duet them! How awesome is that!?! Also, I think I may have a Home Free addiction! I just caught myself munching on chex mix in time to the music! Chomp Chomp! Save yourself it's too late for me! 🤣
Dave, this is the best reaction to this video I will ever see. Thanks so much for enjoying it with us. You're right, Home Free is addictive. And you're right again, they always bring their A game. Did you hear the castanets? How cool was that!! Not putting down other groups, but these guys are the best.
I love this!! And it makes me so happy when you are happy watching these. You give such great critiques and little bits of facts. Love yah Dave, great reaction❤❤
The comments are right Tim is standing in a boat but here's the rest. The boat is in his brother in law's backyard yard in Nashville but it is actually Chance's boat that for some reason is stored there.
i loved this! just got my concert tickets and so hope this is in the line up!. as always awesome reaction. Adam killed this especially the castanets in the last song
Just so you were aware, their entire inspiration for this video did come from TikTok. A guy named Nathan Evans sang The Wellerman (the first song that Home Free sings in this video.) Other people added on, and it started a huge trend that nearly took over TikTok, of people just singing sea shanties, or adding to the videos of others. The video effect of each of the guys extending to the right with their portraits getting smaller is actually the primary "Duet" (when you add your own video to another person's) setting on TikTok, where your video will be to the left of the other persons. This entire video is a reference to TikTok, because even Nathan Evan's video, AKA the video that started the entire trend, was in black and white, which Home Free references by having the beginning of this video be in black and white. Hope this helps!
A lot of shanties were work songs to coordinate hauling ropes or some other activity. The beats would vary depending on what was being done. You get the same effect with military marching chants.
Fun fact: They often do this as their encore at their live shows. It works well because of the energy. The audience leaves on such a high! And yes, their shows work better than my anti-depressants.
I have a long standing love for folk music of all types, but I have to admit the Sea Shanty, rises above most styles for me. Although each shanty produces its own atmosphere, there is something intrinsically catchy about the melodies that get your blood stirring. Of course Home Free would do them well with a serious/comedic bent. Adam, in a shanty that I have never run across before, also shows off his new castanet rhythm in Santianna (Honestly, is there any instrument that man can’t reproduce?) Rob and Austin add the high to mid range melodies and harmonies that keep the lightness of the sea breeze evident. Add Chance’s salty baritone and Tim’s basso profundo, perfect grounding for sea faring songs. Because of the Covid restrictions I think the costumes and Rob’s slyly curled mustachio were hilarious substitutes to the lack of a sailing ship for a backdrop. What fun to watch and listen to!
Very astute Dave. Think Chance got the idea from Tik Tok and they did this for Tik Tok I think. It was so good. I’d never heard the term sea shanty but I’m loving this. I knew only one song. Did you hear Adam and the castanets sound in the last song? Amazing. Tim’s low notes were crazy good. This was a fun one. Great reaction!
My first impression of the black & white gimmick is that it was simply done to draw attention to the fact the sea shanties were around long long ago. I don't think it's meant to be historically accurate, as much as just to give the listener the impression that these songs are OLD. I also think that gimmick was WELL DONE.
So glad to see sea shanties finally getting some spotlight. I will happily welcome all the new buccaneers. I would recommend some but you should dive into the deep end yourselves.
There actually was a Practical reason WHY the guys of the HOME FREE group did this video as appearing the Single panal method each of the gentlemen did. They created this specific video as separate recorded sections that in the end were edited as appearing as a single recording---because at the time they created this video, All the members of the group were in Locked down Quarantine--due to the C-virus pandemic.
Sea shanties have really gone viral on tik tok this year, honestly. The big breakthrough was a cover of The Wellerman. Some see this as the year of the sea shanty XD I do think the energy of being on a long, unrelenting voyage that there's no getting away from for months and months on end kind of suits the current zeitgeist for some... unfathomable reason >.> But one group you should look into is The Longest Johns, and their mass choir cover of Leave Her Johnny, but a lot of their songs are just great. Oak & Ash & Thorn, We All Pull Together, and The Northwest Pssage are my favorites of their's, but to be perfectly honest, they've got few songs that I don't care for.
Adam doing the castanets = AMAZING 👏 👏❤
I was going to say the same thing! Adam truly is a Freak Of Nature. Incredible!
Yeah, he is. Lol.
The beatboxing is amazing. There was a thank you from Home Free the other day from Home Free for 30 million views. 30,000,000 !!!!!!

@@conniestone2806 Of course, Austin has a musical theater background, but Tim was on a boat.
all they gotta do now is have a kid together
The act by both is called sea legs 😂

Yep, the castanets are my favorite of Adam Rupp's in this song. I am always blown away with Rupp comes up with.

1000000% truth
I just went to their TikTok duets! There are some very very talented people doing the duets! I admit I headed straight for Luke the Voice's account! For only being 19, that young man has some pipes!
They followed the trend on TikTok. A postman named Nathan Evans made it go viral.
Adam's beatboxing is completly awesome !! I adore your reaction and you're right : Home Free is addictive ! 😍👍

With sea shanty type songs the bass is SOOOO important, and it pulls the whole song together. I love it!!!

Austin’s musical theater training really shines here, including his eyeliner! Tim is “the captain” of this crew! Such a fun video!,
Take a moment to appreciate Adam Rupp doing castanets!

Adam doing the tom-toms starting at 3:22 is just insane. Such a versatile beatboxer.
And the castanets! I could NOT believe how good his castanets were!
@@lachimiste1 The castanets are CRAZY!!

The songs such as The Wellerman or Santiana are also referred to as "Sea Ballads" to differentiate them from the more work-related Sea Shanties
That said, the rhythm of The Wellerman is a capstan turner. Before electric winches, the sailors provided the power for winches and you didn't want to let go at the wrong time. Many broken bones resulted from capstan handles.

Love how the tempo picks up with each shanty. Really gets you moving and it makes you want to move.
Yeah, for this reason, my truck is named Santiana, after the last Shanty.
Just watching your big smile when you react to these songs makes it worth watching. It's so easy to tell how much you enjoy what you're doing!
Home Free is totally amazing! I love Tim’s bass in this medley!!!!
its cool to bring these old shanties back to the masses, a cool historical throwback...
Easily some of the most thoughtful and insightful comments by someone doing a reaction video. Great job!
Sea shantys completely EXPOLODED on tiktok for about a month ago or so, and I love it, and I LOOOVE that Home Free did a medley 😁❤👌

Shanty's were also sung to provide a rhythm for work. They would pull rope, etc they were able to work in unison and keep together.

Santiana is my favorite part of this medley
I don't know who looks better Tim as captain Jack Sparrow, or Austin as Sinbad the sailor. Love music and the conviction of the charicters

They created this specific video as separate recorded sections that in the end were edited as appearing as a single recording---because at the time they created this video, All the members of the group were in Locked down Quarantine--due to the C-virus pandemic.
Austin is sooooooooo gorgeous
Sea shanties have really gone viral on tik tok this year, honestly. The big breakthrough was a cover of The Wellerman. Some see this as the year of the sea shanty XD I do think the energy of being on a long, unrelenting voyage that there's no getting away from for months and months on end kind of suits the current zeitgeist for some... unfathomable reason >.>
But one group you should look into is The Longest Johns, and their mass choir cover of Leave Her Johnny, but a lot of their songs are just great. Oak & Ash & Thorn, We All Pull Together, and The Northwest Pssage are my favorites of their's, but to be perfectly honest, they've got few songs that I don't care for.
I swear these guys could sing the phone book and it would be a hit...
