Voice Play has a Viking shanty called My Mother Told Me; and Tim also does Misty Mountain, with Peter Hollins. I much prefer Tim's Misty mountains to Geoff's. Geoff, in his version, seems to be singing solely to look for reasons to show off how deep he can go - when he's so much more than that.

The fashion accessory called a " beanie" today has been called a "watch cap" by the US Navy for over two centuries. It came from British usage a couple of centuries before even that. In the days of sail ship's crew stood four-hour "watches" at the ships wheel, on deck for maintenance, available to make or shorten sail and all other tasks. A small knit cap would keep a head warm in cold weather and was easily replaced if carried away by wind or wave.

Adam Chance, the first singer, was the bass in his original acappella quartet Street Corner Symphony (edited). He holds down the bass in Home Free when Tim takes the lead parts. Their cover of Folsom Prison Blues really shows off both of these guys. As to Tim and his full Jack Sparrow, he's also standing in a boat (it's hard to see but I think that's why he's standing so still). Tim got the Sparrow costume but Austin took on the psycho-Sparrow mannerisms. And can we just have a moment of appreciation for Adam Rupp's ability to mimic castinets without spit flying everywhere?

Technically, you have hawlyard shanties (pronounced and often spelled halyard) which are fast, a small team is bringing a slack line in freed by a change of tack, and capstan shanties, which are slow and powerful and determined - forty men on bars lifting an anchor and cable heavy enough to hold a 100-ton ship fast. The shantyman was actually a fiddler-conductor, keeping them coordinated, as that much weight could be trouble.

Their "costumes", if you will, ran the gamut: Tim as Jack Sparrow, of course, Austin (in the red) I believe was Smee from Peter Pan, Adam Rupp as Prince Eric from Little Mermaid, Rob as a Cape Cod fisherman, and Adam Chance as a modern fisherman (and paying tribute to The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou with his "Z" shirt). Love how they get into their videos! Seriously, tho, listen to Peter Hollens/Tim Foust do Misty Mountains. Tim makes the camera shake with his low finishing note!

I love your musical analysis. To hear more viper watch Hillbilly Bone, Fishin in the Dark, Folsom Prison Blues and Sold. The guy in the middle is high tenor Austin Brown. He was theater music major. Check out his channel.

The tenor in red is Austin Brown (phenomenal voice ... check out When a Man Loves a Woman). He has a background in musical theater and totally gets into it! Here I feel he was channeling Johnny Depp as Capt Jack Sparrow - the eyes and hands were identical!

I can’t speak for couple hundred years ago- but my tenure in the modern Navy , is that we wore our watch caps simply to keep our heads and ears warm in the cold and windy conditions. ESP when out to sea.

The guys are Adam Chance (beanie), Tim Foust (you know him obviously), Austin Brown (the turban-like head cover), Rob Lundquist (the blue bandana with full beard and mustache), and Adam Rupp (Beat boxer in the white pirate shirt). Singing parts respectfully are: Tim- bass, Chance- Baritone, Austin-lead tenor, Rob- high tenor, Adam Rupp- beat boxer/ low tenor. Hope this helps!!!

Peter, I hope you see this. Austin and Rob have just released a video of "Two country singers sing opera" and it brought to mind a comment you made once about thinking Rob sounded like "a wild tenor" something like he had little training but was very talented "off the street" tenor singer. I know you've heard lots more since then and know them better but listening to them made me think of you and an early comment.

The guy in red is Austin Brown (high tenor) and he can get goofy. He has a solo cover for when a man loves a woman is great. His girlfriend was in the studio and he was singing to her. The guy in the long sleeve white shirt is the beatboxer Adam Rupp. Guy that start is Adam Chance go by Chance Rob Linquist has the beautiful beard. And you know Tim.
