They "sound better" with mens voices because they're work songs, written specifically for male voices as a way to provide a cadence to men doing hard physical labour aboard ships.
I’m sorry I don’t really agree but I think the female voices add a really nice sound to it and make it sound like a witchy sound that’s how I kind of was back in the day because people always thought that some people that knew how to do medicines or something like that were witches so actually it’s not 100% true but I think it adds a witchy sound to it.

For anyone who doesn't know what half the stuff he's saying. Here is information. There is a musical term called S.A.T.B: Soprano Alto Tenor Bass. Soprano is high female singing. Alto Is low female singing. Tenor is high male singing. Bass is low male singing. And here's where it gets a little more complicated. Mezzo-soprano: A type of singing which is done by a female that includes Soprano and alto. So, now that we're all caught up, have fun watching now that I've broken it down for you.

The thing about sea shanties is that they were common folk singing almost like telling tales where the working men would sing together have a laugh and keep themselves moralised. It’s less about how hard or good they are and more about singing with others
I feel there's 2 types of sea shanties. The Shipmen's where the male deeper voices tend to work better, but the shore based where it's like lighthouse maidens that fit better. They can do each other's styles but excel within their own.
Joel... you must absolutely check out Colm McGuinness. His range is surreal and he can meld with others very well. In Canada we have a National band, Great Big Sea -- who sang old traditional sea shanty songs, along with their pop music hits. Such fine harmonies, too! (an Irish tradition!)
Usually, I find myself rating trends as even parts harmless and pointless. But this one, I like. It's just wholesome when people come together to sing. It's not about being super good at it, it's just about creating a sense of community and having fun. That's why I guess shantys and traditionals lend themselves well for this. The threshhold is low, every type of voice can fit in and because the motifs include so many call and respond or repeated passages, you can learn them while they play. AND you can still shout them drunk and it only gets more authentic! Really pleasant phenomenon for a change. I just hope a small percentage of the people involved now will stick with it. It's a really nice pasttime, singing with family and friends. I have made so many good memories with that.
personally I like sea shantys that have male and female singers for different reasons, the different combos give a different feel to the songs which I appreciate ❤️
I love this trend! I’d love to see more people getting into the traditional music of whoever their ancestors are (and other people’s ancestors too, why not). New music is great of course, but there’s something really cool and special about this kind of stuff. Wouldn’t want it lost to history.

Speaking of this "sea shanty" genre. A French folk song that I used to listen too is a perfect example. It's called _Pique_ _La_ _Baleine_ which is a folk song from Brittany by whalers/fishers. It literally means "stab the whale" but it's about reminiscing the love of your life while out in the middle of the ocean.
The whole point of sea shanties is to be able to sing while working. It isn't meant to be perfect. It is laced with a common thread of men doing incredibly hard and dangerous work finding a way to make the job easier.
Assassins Creed Black Flag got me into sea shanties and this video really reminds me of my experience of just playing it and listening to the shanties.

Angry feminist here. Completely agree that sea shantys sound better with exclusively male voices. It feels more authentic as well.
I have to disagree but whatever 'floats your boat'
@@onism6260 I like your joke, but it’s 100% better with deep and powerful male voices
@@ardenjalal3421 True that
And maybe that's how it should be-
But that's only my opinion, and everyone can have their own.
I personally love the rough stat they add to it, but the silky notes also give it some smoothness.
I'm aware that the Sea Shanty's are supposed to be more rough, but then again it's just my modern opinion lmao 🗿
This song is made for guys only like no caps
Yes but there needs to be female voices
Can we all just agree that Joel’s voice is absolutely amazing?
Joel got the nerdy punk look with the dad jokes and goofy faces, reacting to yo-ho music on tik tok. NOW THAT'S THE QUALITY CONTENT I CAME FOR!!

Right?
For anyone who doesn't know what half the stuff he's saying. Here is information.
There is a musical term called S.A.T.B: Soprano Alto Tenor Bass.
Soprano is high female singing. Alto Is low female singing. Tenor is high male singing. Bass is low male singing. And here's where it gets a little more complicated. Mezzo-soprano: A type of singing which is done by a female that includes Soprano and alto. So, now that we're all caught up, have fun watching now that I've broken it down for you.
The cool thing about Sea Shanties is that you can add almost as many layers as you want. They are specifically made for many people to sing them at the same time without necessarily needing instruments. And they are even meant to be catchy so you can work motivated at the same time
I think female voices work really well for witchy shanties and other types of female-related topics, it's beautiful and haunting
Yeah like I really like when the one person acted like a siren in the video. I but I also think the females voices in some of them do stop them from sounding really good
Witchy shanties?
Yes we can do sirens!
Yea kinda like sirens or mermaids ready to enchant and take sailors to the depths.
@@Notakiryumain20992 I’m going to guess songs like jolly sailor bold, leave her johnny, savage daughter....things that suit tenor-soprano vocals. Though then i feel like it gets a bit Celtic than sea shanty...

If u think the female voices are glittery, try imagining them as mermaids singing alongside sailors. Sounds heavenly and gives me chills imagining it.
Agreed! Great way to put it

@@taiguy53 and that's why she said imagine- also, there's a lot of folklore about pirates and mermaids and these songs fit in perfectly.

Really hope this music doesn’t all get boiled down to “sea shanties”. Some are mining songs, one was written in the ‘90s by Great Big Sea, some are old folk songs, but very few of these are actual sea shanties. But they’re all great songs. Folk music doesn’t get its due!
I was thinking that this gave me Hunger Games vibes at times. That would explain it if they include mining songs. Are you coming to the tree?

I like thinking the girls are mermaids who just couldn't help but sing along 😆 And Joel should totally do a cover of this song! I think he'll sound cool
Sea shanties aren’t meant to be pop songs... they’re meant to be just what he explained them to be and that he did more of a pop style of singing
They usually sound like drunk irish deep bass sounded lads
That's totally what I was thinking, but never had the thought exactly
I just imagined a pirate crew captured a mermaid in the nets and was about to kill her when the mermaid picked up a cup of beer and started singing sea shanties. The pirates looked at each other, looked at the mermaid and said in unison “SHE IS ONE OF THE BOYS"

@@bbjj0909 in no way is singing a value of your "manliness" that logic is retarded, there's a difference in what was said and "I don't sing for my male friends"
@@gsaucegaming6635 no one said its a value of manliness. cos my male friends know i can sing and they want that ability to song themselves. i dont sing it to them because singing isnt manly. rapping is manly. or as roomie says bass singing is manly. not many guys listen to songs that is all preety and high pitched. most of my mates listen to rap.
What's really great about shanties and stacking vocals is that it really caters to why they were written in the first place.
If you want some *quality* sea shanties, check out The Neverland Pirate Band - The Jolly Roger and Yo Ho Matey's Away (Ship Hop).🤣

Joel... you must absolutely check out Colm McGuinness. His range is surreal and he can meld with others very well. He even does a song with Bobby Bass(and two other, i don't remember their names), who is the guy 2nd from the left in the intro segment of this video.

These people in the first one SOUND FREAKING LIT 😂😂

It's such a shame that singing in the baritone range isn't really part of 'popular' music, I think it's beautiful 🥰
I love it too! An artist you might want to check out is Stan Rogers- his music is older but it’s some of my favourite music!
It's come to the point where I actually check the time stamp to see how far in Joel does the intro. Today was quick at 1:24; usually it's around 2:00.
I suggest everyone check out Sean Dagher. He sang the shanties in Assassins Creed 4.
Black Flag got me into sea shanties, and I have no regrets.
While playing that game, the little ones learned to sing sea shanties and would sing them in the grocery store to everyone's amusement, lol!
