I am riding my winspace Lún Road 45mm wheels for almost 2 years now. They are perfect for me, very strong knowing the bad quality of the roads where I ride, cope very well with the rain, sound good and still look in good conditions! They look more simple than the Hyper, have no fancy butterfly effect of the carbon and are cheaper too. I am very happy with them. Great wheels

I did 8000 km since i have the Hypers 50mm and i'm still VERY happy with them. They have seen a lot, 1600W sprints, potholes, bumps and even did some gravel and single track with them. They still true and solid as a rock ! If one day i have to buy a new pair for any reason, i will for sure get a Winspace pair again !
I have done north of 5000km on my Hyper 50’s. I weigh 85kg, regularly hit 1300 watts in sprints, have had 3 crashes, one serious enough to break bones, shatter a carbon fibre helmet and saw my bike and I over 10 meters apart at the end. The one thing on my bike that has stayed intact and true are my Winspace rims. Could be luck but so far they have proven reliable.

@@harkat16 Hey! There are many similarities, and there are also some slight differences. I use the LUN Wheels often and really like them very much. I use the HYPER Wheels very often and really like them very much as well. Both wheels I do sincerely feel are two of the best wheels in general that I have ever used. I have the LUN 45's and 60's, and the HYPER Wheels 38's 50's, and 65's. All of those wheels run perfectly now for many years and I have not had one issue negative with the wheels. I have used each set for a few thousand Kilometers over the last few years. The HYPER Wheels are stiffer, just feel faster and better at the highest level, and are bomb proof it seems. I have taken huge hits with the HYPER Wheels in accidents and holes on the roads. The HYPER Wheels roll on like they are brand new. This is after constant use and huge hits and abuse to the wheels. They are amazing wheels. The LUN Wheels are the best Wheels I have used at that particular price point. For 800$ they are pure class. The Hubs for the LUN Wheels share most of the same design aspects and internals as the HYPER Wheels. I do like the textured braking surface of the LUN WHeels, yet it does seem to be slightly more grabby and locking up if you squeeze it too hard and it heats up. The proper brake pads are key if you want to get the best stopping power for carbon rims. I have had times when the LUN Wheels seem to stick more to the brake pads under the strong force of the rim brakes when in race mode. The HYPER Wheels have always had a very predictable braking rhythm when applying the brakes under race mode forces. I think both wheels, the LUN & HYPER are made by a company that really wants to produce the finest wheels on the market. And a company that values customer service and will be there for its customers for the long term. I like both the Stainless Steel Bearings and the Ceramic Bearings. The Hubs are awesome and as mentioned before, I have been super hard on the wheels, both KUN and HYPER, and both wheels are crafted for performance and durability. If you want the most stiff wheels ever made, go with HYPER Wheels. If you want a high-quality wheelset, that performs perfectly and will deliver endless riding pleasure for a slightly lesser price, go with the LUN Wheels. Either way, you are winning.
i have 3 sets of Hyper wheelset, very happy and satisfied with it,after 3500km riding they still true like new , fast and solid. definitely i will buy again to replace my other Roadbike wheels,it is the best wheelset that you can buy with that reasonable price.

Great review. I personally need fast dependable and trustworthy road wheels. Crashing after my front Pirelli P zero tire blew a sidewall at 30 mph has me prioritizing quality over high tech unproven parts. No longer envious of the spacecraft hyper bikes. Thank you so much for a great review.
great honest review. i used to think the same about Winspace and Lun wheels. i bought a pair of disc 50 hypers in November 2021. 1st impressions were so great that in Jan 2022 ordered a second pair. well, my 1st pair never held air for more than 3 days in the front wheel. i blamed it on other possible issues. after i received my second set, i noticed the same thing . front wheel not holding air for more than 2 or 3 days. i tried 3 different brand of tires with the same result. i contacted Winspace and they requested serial numbers and the likes. 3 weeks went by and no feedback from Winspace. i contacted them again and they recommended i replace the valve stem. i tried that and no improvement. after another 2 weeks of emails with Winspace they offered a $200 credit due to the fact that the only solution they could come up with was for me to use the front wheels with inner tubes. i agreed to it. it has been more than 3 weeks now and no refund and no communication from Winspace. i am assuming i have been taken by another chinese manufacturer like many people have. do not be fooled by all the great reviews. people are getting paid to post them.
Thank you for telling your story. I must admit I hadn’t considered the tubeless opinion for the wheels as I use tubes. But that situation sounds very frustrating and I’m disappointed that they didn’t send you a refund yet?

Kia Ora, I have followed you for a while, ,this review has earned a sub. Maybe you can join the engineer group of non shill youtubers. The roads there in Brunei look as rough as New Zealand in places. At least Lun/Wins pace listens to feedback as regards improvements,so maybe I should wait for the next-gen. Definitely prefer high quality steel bearings,I expect my gear to last a long time.
Reginald, you know more than I do about this so let me ask you about the spokes. In regards to spoke deflection (11:00) Realistically, the spokes will never bend and break like how you broke one unless the rim has been in a crash situation. I guess what I'm saying is, the spoke deflection might cause one to break but to the point it breaks in your demonstration probably won't happen unless a worse situation like a crash happens. At that point, the wheel is a total loss. Otherwise, you just replace the spoke and true it up. thoughts?
I think I follow your line of reasoning… I was just demonstrating they they are weak from side impact. Snapping them in my had was the only way I could show that but you are right that in reality they would be fixed at both ends. However, even a minor crash or miss-hap can easily snap them in a side impact. Probably more so when they are fixed in place. I think in most situations it will be just a case of replacement of 1 or 2 spokes. But a spoke failure at speed could result in the lost of the wheel depending on the situation. Great - and very thorough review (I hope you do more wheel reviews!)… I have a couple of questions… 1. Can I change out the hub to a DT Swiss, Kogel, or Chris King? 2. Is truing the wheel more difficult because of the aluminum/carbon mix of the spoke?
I believe "Oz cycle" stuck a camera in the valve stem hole to evaluate the carbon fiber, and it wasn't pretty, not that it was bad. Compared it to an older Dura Ace rim, the Dura Ace was much cleaner inside. He tapped the spokes, and the difference in sound denotes the difference in tension. Might be helpful to test the tension before wheel applications. I'm going to buy a set, for the price, they seem an exceptional value.
Hello Reginald great informative review, I own the first gen hyper 50mm RB absolutely love them. Unfortunately got ran off the road by a distracted driver and cracked the rear rim, I have been surfing the internet for replacement rim only to rebuild they are off warranty so no help from Lun. Would you be able to point me the direction of a seller who has one for sale. Any help will be appreciated.
Yes I have the same problem with Winspace, they don’t hold any parts for replacement or repair. It’s frustrating and not professional of them. Sorry I can’t point you in any direction as I’m in the same situation. 😳
I agree with truing all the time and disagree with the behavior with wind. I have other 50 wheels and these are the worst with wind. I am heavier than you so normally this is not a problem in the flats, however I made the mistake of taking these to Colorado Mountains once and regretted it instantaneously. Yea otherwise accelerate very well and seem fast. Need to replace the bearing as you suggested. I make wholes on the rim tape and then patch them up when truing the wheels, otherwise I would be replacing rim tape all the time (that's how frequent I had to true these wheels).

I love direct to consumer chinese gear always have done. But now there are English media reviews from a certain clique of youtubers people have developed the same blind spots that they would previously had for the big brands and their marketing. There are a few i trust to deliver impartial reviews namely Peak Torque.
I guess it’s a money thing… if they say something negative then other companies won’t send them stuff to review. I’m 50/50 on Mr Torque. His opinions and the data he provides are taken by some of his “Disciples” as Gospel and they get very zealot like. The bearings can be replaced very easily and the spokes are great! Unless you hit them from the side? Nothing is perfect, but the Hyper wheels are quite close. 😀 The alternative is something x2 the price. So when you look at the pros and cons they are still an very good choice. If you can afford something more expensive (DT Swiss) then obviously go for them.

Hi, thank you so much! Currently you can’t because the hub and spokes are Specific to the rim, it all works as 1 package. The only thing you can do is A) replace the bearings with something better. Or B) buy the Lun road wheels as they come with steel bearings and metal spokes as standard. Thank you again! Safe riding!
Fantastic, very interesting review. thx. I seem to crash a lot. Sitting here with a sling. Usually caused by being in wrong place at wrong time. So I think I'll stick with sapim spoked wheels for the meantime. As I'd be sure to have an unfortunate crash and wreck these wheels. Look like fantastic wheels though. I'm also a fan of longer lasting quality steel bearings too.
hi, actually what exactly the problem is with the ceramic bearing. Now Winspace says they heard the voice from customers that there is a demand in steel bearings, and a new line is introduced in the market called "SE", which uses steel bearings and costs 1000 before discount, would you suggest that I go with this one. Also, I have received an offer that they can upgrade the bearing from steel to ceramic for free, but I need to pay the shipping charge myself (I am in Hong Kong, I think the shipping charge would not be much), any comments, tks.
@@davewong2391 Problem is the bearing "race" that the ceramic ball bearing sits in. this is usually metal which is softer than the ball bearing so the race can wear out reasonably quickly as I understand it. Hence many engineers suggest its better to go with a high quality steel bearing if possible.

I’m dubious about the claims. I’m glad they improved the hub, but they still used ceramic bearings. And making the rim wider and yet lower weight concerns me slightly.
Well, I ride metal bikes, titanium mostly so my point of view is from the perspective of a very comfortable frame. But I don’t notice any significant problem.
Spokes are supposed to bare tensile load only so comparing them with chopsticks is a bit off. Even if they are being incidentally struck from the side they are being struck while they are strung so they won't brake in the same fashion. CF should also be very durable and dimensionally stable. If everything is done right, truing won't be needed at all. But I am also slightly worried about energy absorption capability at impact (accident).
From seeing them in a crash they react in much the same way as in my test. They just snap… They don’t seem terribly durable, carbon without paint is quite soft, you only need look at the damage to a raw carbon seatpost from a dirty saddle bag rubbing on it to confirm that. They are good wheels and certainly strong enough, you just need to be careful when say loading them into a car. In a way you wouldn’t think twice with steel spokes. Great comment! Thank you.
@@reginaldscot165 Thank you for the content, I think it is very useful for those that are interested in the product! Regarding durability I somehow agree and disagree at the same time. Carbon fiber - epoxy composite is very durable at intended cyclic loads (along fiber), way more than aluminum for example. But if you accidentally load material across fiber you will load epoxy which is weak and can fail instantly. I would say latter is not matter of durability, but matter of robustness. CF won't elongate much before they break, that's also why I question the ability to absorb energy at impact. If you compare spoke and seatpost you will see that load case in the seatpost is more complex and more problematic regarding anisotropic materials. Spokes are perfect usage case of fibrous composite. I think the material in theory does not even need epoxy because it will only be subjected to pure tensile loads. But the critical points are aluminum joints at the ends, if delamination occurs at the whole length it will affect those. That's my two cents, but I must say I am not any authority for that matter, I am just talking out of my head. So I stand to be corrected.
Thanks for the review. Very thorough! Really considering these wheels but I'm concerned about maintenance with regards to the hybrid ceramic bearings. I ride over 5000 km per year and really don't want extra maintenance issues. What do you recommend that I do?
Buy the cheaper ones that come with the steel bearings (they now offer that as an option.) or ride them for a few 100 KM and buy some quality steel bearings for them. That’s what I need to do, my bearings are toast!!!
Thanks! You mean from the Winspace range or in general? If you want something dependable and something for road and light gravel a set of DT Swiss P1800 aluminium wheels are always a good choice, or the PR1600s if you have the money. I’d avoid carbon road wheels for gravel riding in general.
it would probably be more realistic to put a spoke under tension like on a wheel then test the snap test. lol i was shocked when you smashed the bearing...i thought it was gonna shoot out

Would like to see what you have to say about Light Bicycle wheels. Arguably superior to the Hypers as they use standard off the shelf spokes and hubs and have superior shapes to the Hypers.
Nice review.. I have the 50mm disc brake model. Any recommendation size and brand of tire best to use? I do not race. I'm a newbie RB rider. At the moment I am using a 700x26 turbo Pro that came with my sl7 tarmac.

On your current trajectory of purchasing, I’d recommend the most expensive tubeless tyres you can find. At least $100+ a tyre. You get extra points if it’s Italian branded. 👌🏻 Preferably in 30mm or bigger, because I believe everything I hear from GCN and they say fatter is faster so go 35mm if you can get them. 🙂👍🏻 Good luck! Reviews like these are so valuable, thank you! Would you recommend Hyper wheels for a 95 kg rider like me? Thinking of buying the new ones, riding 25 or 28 mm, rimbrake. Question for you: I ride tubeless now, tubes earlier. Main reason being several pinch-flat punctures like in your video, sometimes while descending from steep mountains. Luckily i never crashed, even though tires deflated instantly. I have also experienced punctures with tubeless, without the sealant fixing it, but sudden deflation will not happen. Why don't you prefer tubeless, especially after experiencing punctures like that?

I guess I would also ask, are you 95kg because you are very tall or are you carrying some extra weight that could be lost? You obviously don’t need to answer but for myself I actually make a promise to reach a target before I buy new stuff. For example I will say. “I will get new wheels when I drop 2kg from my body.” Or “I will buy that new frame when I can ride up this hill on my heavier bike.” Target 🎯 and reward 🏆 As for tubeless, I could make a video about that… but the short answer is: simple cost benefit analysis. Tubeless requires more time to install and costs more+ new bike pump + sealant. More issues, more hassle, more mess, for not enough improvement to justify it (for me.) I have seen them fail in a number of ways and it always leads to a mess. I’m a bit OCD and I can’t stand sticky mess! Ha ha Thank you for your comment! Safe riding!

I just got a little worried during your section with the carbon spokes, considering my weight.😅 But like you said, weight limit is 120 kg, so... I agree about tubeless being messy, and i have experienced them not sealing a leak. My decision was based mostly on safety, as sudden deflation will not occur. I have had pinch flats down both Mont Ventoux and Alpe d' Hues, luckily while going in a straight line. Still, not a pleasant experience. It really scared me. Are there any special kind of tubes available, which will have a more "controled" deflation?
Hi! Well that depends on where you live, the rates at your local bike shop, if you can get a friend to do it and what sort of bearings you use quality wise? But a good bearing is going to be about $10-15 each (The DT ones in my shop are $18 BND each)
I'm on rim brakes and have some very steep and twisty descents which I'm on a lot. How is the braking on the Winspace (dry and wet) and any fears of delamination of the brake track? I'm looking at the Lun Hyper SE R45 (2023).
Both is fine. Although if you are worried I’d opt for the LUN ROAD wheels. They are significantly cheaper and the brake track has a ridged surface for better wet weather performance. As for wearing out the brake track I wouldn’t worry. It needs + 200C before you melt them, I did a steep 1000m decent on them with tight corners and they only got to like 40C. Also if you go for deep rims 50+ mm then the carbon will dissipate the heat easily. 👍🏻🙂
I am eyeing the 2023 model. Ready to add them to my cart, then I discuss with a friend who asked me if I also buy a full face helmet, being explicit for this brand. I am 88 kg, that is why, he told me. Semi pro guy some years ago. I am totally confused. By the way, I am surprised by the so many positive, similar amongst themselves, comments here….
Humm, 88kg isn’t bad, they are good for 120kg I believe, but not everyone needs such light wheels. For reliability I’d go for the cheaper LUN ROAD, the breaking surface is better and they are more sturdy in their construction. 👌🏻

If you just want looks and a bit of extra aero buy don’t race then I’d go for the LUN road wheels. They are $500 BND cheaper than the Hyper and more durable as they use traditional metal spokes and steel bearings. At the price and quality you can’t go wrong. 🙂👍🏻

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm currently considering the 2023 Hypers. Winspace says it's "aero optimized" for 25-28mm tires, which is a plus because I prefer the comfort of 28s. That said, should I take their word for it despite not satisfying the 105% rule? Or should I downsize to 25s to maximize aero efficiency, or is it negligible even with 28s? Thanks 😊
Well, you are asking a guy who rides on 23s… 😄 This is the way I see it, if you are look for max comfort, then you are willing to sacrifice speed. So then it doesn’t really matter what wheels you buy if you plan to put 28s on them. And no I don’t think they are being honest when they say it’s optimised for 25s and 28s because that’s a big difference. Also, be careful of what brand of tyre you use, some are bigger than they say. For example conti 28s are 30mm on most wheels.
Personally i haven't bought a single new bike/wheelset where the hubs and seals (if they even came with seals) weren't completely dry. And it always makes me wonder how high the return rate of wheels are, because without grease on especially the cassette side of the rear hub where there is rarely a seal on lower end wheels, a simple washing with a brush can destroy your entire hub. Hence why i now always disassemble at least that side of the rear hub just to pack it with grease to hopefully save the fragile bearing from the elements. The last wheelset i bought only lasted a single ride in the rain before both hubs were completely destroyed, with zero after sales support. I had to buy and install new bearing myself and after actually packing them with grease they lasted another 2 years with daily commuting in often, very wet conditions. It just goes to show that, for me, wheels are always skimping on grease and you risk destroying your hubs on new bikes due to this fact.
That’s a very good observation. Personally never had the same level of problems with older wheels but I did notice more modern and more expensive stuff definitely are a bit on the dry side.
@@reginaldscot165 biggest issue for me is that you can peek right through the cassette on both of my cheaper wheelsets and the bearing is completely exposed. So the only option is a lot of grease right behind the locking ring. Seems like a little cap with a rubber ring is the last place you'd save a buck on an entire wheelset. Idk what they're doing. Maybe I'm just unlucky with my wheels. I'll buy some proper carbon rims eventually :P

Well, in a lot of cases alloy wheels are fine, in particular for day to day training. I used to use Easton EA-90 SL wheels for many years, which were pretty light at around 1,400 grams but obviously not aero by any means. I did eventually crack one of the Eastons near a spoke nipple - didn't know I had done so until the bike shop pointed it out. I switched to the Hypers in 2019 or so, and in certain situations you can definitely feel a difference in speed, particularly with a cross tail wind as the wheels act like a sail. I got a pair of Winspace Lun 30's for windy days (and there's a lot of wind here in Tucson, and also where I lived in SoCal for 5 years prior) as the Hypers can get a little dicey in 20+ mph winds in certain types of terrain. The Lun 30's are a good wheel as well, seem pretty bombproof and they seem to deflect the wind even better than my lower profile Eastons did, and more importantly, I don't need to adjust my rim brakes switching between wheelsets like I had to when I used to use my Eastons and then switch to my Enve's (the Enves were utter garbage, BTW). For the price point, the Winspace wheels are hard to beat. I do have a set of the Winspace gravel wheels, but haven't used them yet as I finally got my bike in that I ordered nearly 2 years ago. I'm looking forward to testing those ones out too.
I'd almost decided to give some Hyper 23 D33s a go to help get my overly rotund 110kg body up and over the Cotswolds. But your review scares me. I'm wondering now whether I'll put them out of true first ride, break spokes all the time and spend all my time waiting for replacements from China.
OK, very successful and helpful review, but I would like to know something about the stiffness compared to the wheels, e.g. DT SWISS ARC 62, or in these Hyper wheels the stiffness of the rim is similar to DT SWISS. Does the DT Swiss rim bend in the middle under pressure as in these wheels? Is it better to buy DT SWISS 62 ARC or these hyper 65mm wheels ?
If you can afford DT Swiss, buy DT Swiss. They are definitely better wheels, especially the hubs, but also the build quality and durability. And they are probably a bit more aerodynamic. The only disadvantage to DT is the price and they are slightly heavier, but not by much. Thank you for your comment!

People write that these Hyper are great for criterium races where most of them are sprints and strong ones, I'm not convinced in this belief but ...? You wrote about aerodynamics but in your tests it turns out that these Hyper are faster than DT, I assume it has an impact the height of the cone So the aspect of aerodynamics in DT Swiss is probably dictated by profiling, that's how I understand it, and in Hyper it's simply the height of the cone that counts at the expense of less aerodynamics due to the rim profile used, do I understand correctly ?
@@TheWip140 The carbon Hyper 50mm was tested against a DT Swiss aluminium 21mm wheel. The reason for the comparison was based on price and weight as a 21mm DT PR1400 is similar weight and price to the Hyper. But obviously the 50mm deep wheel is more aero than a 21mm. If you put a DT 50mm against it I’m sure the results would be different. I have no way to test for stiffness in a reliable manner. But I would imagine the hyper to be slightly stiffer, but I can’t say if it would be significant.
I'm quite worried about these ceramic bearings lifespan, and surprised at the same time. I currently own a pair of DT Swiss Arc 1100 and rode 45k on them, they have ceramic bearings as well and they're still ok. Anyways, I will be buying the Hypers 23 R45, but don't know if I should be going for SE or butterfly weave, the main concern is that SE has a textured, groovy braking surface, but the Hypers with butterfly weave doesn't have, can you tell if they will brake better and also last longer?
I have seen a few in the shop, generally not that impressive, also also seen some issues with failures. I’d avoid as for the price you can get something better.
The Elite Drive D40 is actually way lighter than even the new version of the Hypers they just released a few days ago but has the same rim specs. Similar price. Other than the Elite Drive series though nothing else comes close to the value of the Hypers. I just ordered the new Hypers, we'll see how they perform in real life.
Plenty comes close to the value of the Hypers and arguably exceed them. First brand that comes to mind is LightBicycle. Superior aero shapes are available. Their 56mm falcons come to Mind with a wider / better aero shape to it optimised for a wider range of tyre widths. Non-propriatry spokes and hubs. LB builds wheels to your spec. So you can choose your spokes and hubs. And at the end of the day once all is said and done the LB's are very similar in stiffness and strength and also weight without the pitfalls of the carbon spokes and funny hubs. Not bad wheels but certainly not the best value out there.
@@alastairstedman7840 If you're talking about Chinese wheel builders then you can get lighter wheels with better specs or brand like DT hubs for cheaper. Farsport and Gozone and many others.
that little washer for the read hub (the one that goes between the freehub and the internal bearing), does anyone know its parameters? I got the Hyper D45 wheels second hand and it looks like the washer is missing
Well, the ones Hyper supply are good. Nice and soft. If you want better wet weather stuff try the BBB Carbstop pads. But, I personally use the Winspace pads.

Yes, the Lun road series of wheels are excellent, they have better bearings, metal spokes that are more durable, better breaking surface and they are Cheaper. Seems good to me!
Hi Reginald, I just bought the R45s for rim brake but my wheels don't have any special "braking surface" alone the rim. As for as I can tell, the surface where the brakes touch is carbon just like the rest of the wheel. But I thought rim brake wheelsets come with special braking surface? Can you help.
The older version did for Lun road, the Lun Hyper doesn’t have anything anymore. Maybe it’s an update version of Lun Road you have? Best people to ask are Winspace if you have any problems. 👍🏻
@@reginaldscot165 He meant the HYPER 2023 R45. The surface of the brake tracks aren't that much different from the rest of the rim, but there are definitely no grooves on there.
The older Hypers are on clearance now. I need a new wheelset for a new Ti bike build and can't decide if it is worth pay extra for the new D33 or older Hyper 35s. My head is telling me to save the money and go for the older ones. Anyone care to convince me otherwise?
It depends, mostly on money, if you can afford it why not get what you really want. Or if it was me and the hyper 2020 was on a good sale I’d get 2 sets in different sizes. 😂
Comparing breaking points between carbon fiber and stainless steel to conclude that steel is better is a bit unscientific. We know the strength and lightness of fibers against steel are of different category. Using the hand to break a spoke or bamboo chopstick may be 'dramatic' in a way, but still unscientific. What if you use a gauged press to find out the breaking point? What if we try to bend the fiber with a controlled force and apply the same to a stainless steel spoke, will the steel spoke return to its original straightness? Will the carbon fiber bend permanently like the stainless steel spoke? If the same crash happened to a stainless steel spoked wheelset, the rim would have collapsed with the spoke bent, rendering the rim useless because of the pressure of the impact on the rim. The video did not show what happened to the rim. Did it explode also like the spoke, or did it receive cracks or damage? Again, scratching the spoke with a screwdriver to show that it is not as strong as steel is unscientific. Physics dictates that hardness is defined by its scratch resistance by another substance. Using steel to scratch the fiber is nonsense. We are not after hardness, but pulling power or strength under load. It would have been scientific if tension was applied as a pulling force and measured how much weight each would hold without any deterioration. Spokes are used to pull the rim edges to the hub and weighted as much as possible equally. How much tension can the spokes hold with the nipples not giving out and also the spokes themselves? Checking the rim by cutting it in half seems to be lacking. A section of the rim with the spoke holes could have been cut in order to see from both sides without too much usage of an external light. The rim structure is like that of an egg. Putting pressure on the side of the egg breaks the egg. But, putting pressure on the ends of the egg does not. Mere stepping on the side the rim is also unscientific. How about a measured weight put onto the side until breaking point?
Your comment is a waste of both our time. 😂 You didn’t pay enough attention to the video and you totally missed the points. Let’s break down all the stupid stuff you just said. You keep saying “it’s not scientific.” Yes that’s correct, it’s not… and your point is? Did I say it’s a scientist test? Nope! Also, when you crash, is it always under controlled scientist circumstances? Nope! Snapping the spoke is what happened to the spoke when it was in the crash, I’m “demonstrating” how easy it is to snap by doing a “comparison” with a chopstick. That’s it. Did I at any point say “this is a scientific test?” Nope. The kind of measuring equipment you are talking about is the sort of stuff only a large laboratory or research Center would have. I just have a workshop and 1 broken wheel to play with. Not 100s of wheels and spokes I can smash in a controlled environment. Why don’t you go and spend $1000s on that and post the results for us? Yes the video did show what happened to the rim. That’s the rim I cut up, try to pay attention, I mentioned that in the video. The scratch test showed Exactly what it was designed to show. If you rub the carbon spoke against a harder material it will degrade. That’s it, nothing more complicated than that. And nine times out of 10 when you drop your carbon wheels on something, or hit them against something it’s going to be harder than carbon. If you do the same test with a steel spoke and steel screwdriver then nothing will happen. So therefore steel is more robust than carbon. I’m sorry that bothers you, but it’s just a fact. You can’t assume that if the wheel that was crashed had steel spokes it would have broken. You don’t know that because you don’t know the forces involved and how the wheel would have reacted. I didn’t cut the rim up anymore because I wanted the 2 halves of the rim for future projects. That’s why I used a torch. Stepping on the rim is not a scientist test, it’s a “demonstration.” I am showing what happens if you step on the rim. What use would the braking point data be to an average person anyway. I know the rim gains it’s strength from its shape. I mentioned that in the video. Yes it’s like an egg. But I stood on it and it still didn’t crack, so that’s a very positive point for the wheel. The problem here is: 1) you don’t listen and pay attention enough. 2) You seem to live in a delusion that everyone in RUclips has the funding and technology to conduct every video as a scientific test. Not only is that unreasonable and unrealistic but it’s also not the only type of useful data.
I have purchased two sets with a promotion Winspace had. Asked to exchange to a disc version from a rim brake model, same price and I would paying shipping to return and ship identical exchange and they said no. Never again. Horrible customer service.
Man runs into side of carbon wheel and it breaks…no news here. Sidewalls are not the strength of carbon rims because they are not supposed to be. The rim shape is designed to be fit for purpose and it obviously is. Fair crack at some backyard engineering though. Certainly not too technical but practical.
People buy these for carbon spokes n ceramic bearings, if you don’t like them, you don’t like them, they are not down falls, just personal dislikes. But I personally, yes, also prefer steel bearings n metal spokes, but it will bump up the weight at least 30g to 50g.

The hooks with the wheels are WAY to aggressive as Winspace admits it. I literally can’t change tire tires because the beads within the tires get stuck! Winspace won’t do anything about it
You make a lot of assumptions about spoke strength, zero science behind it. Instead of this video people would do better to watch Leuscher Teknik video where he actually tests these spokes under measured tension. And over my 25yrs of racing and training I’ve had many spokes break so your point is not really valid.
Your comment is inaccurate. Assumptions? If you watch the video I tell of a real life situation where the spokes failed and I demonstrate how that happened and how easy they are to snap. Is that not useful information free from assumptions? I have seen the video you referenced, pulling the spokes in a linear direction to test tensile strength Is playing to the advantages of carbon fibre. Also useful information, but not the worst case scenario as spokes are designed to deal with that type of stress. As for “Zero Science…” the definition is “the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.” (I also confirmed with my PHD Scientist wife.) By that metric there is Science in this video. ☺️
YES they re fast light and aero but cost too much for what you get and not as DURABLE as a good as alloy wheels especially for RIM brakes .l like yrs of use not mths BUT you have money to waist go for it these are the best bang for lots of bucks !!
I am riding my winspace Lún Road 45mm wheels for almost 2 years now. They are perfect for me, very strong knowing the bad quality of the roads where I ride, cope very well with the rain, sound good and still look in good conditions! They look more simple than the Hyper, have no fancy butterfly effect of the carbon and are cheaper too. I am very happy with them. Great wheels

I did 8000 km since i have the Hypers 50mm and i'm still VERY happy with them.
They have seen a lot, 1600W sprints, potholes, bumps and even did some gravel and single track with them.
They still true and solid as a rock !
If one day i have to buy a new pair for any reason, i will for sure get a Winspace pair again !

I have done north of 5000km on my Hyper 50’s. I weigh 85kg, regularly hit 1300 watts in sprints, have had 3 crashes, one serious enough to break bones, shatter a carbon fibre helmet and saw my bike and I over 10 meters apart at the end. The one thing on my bike that has stayed intact and true are my Winspace rims. Could be luck but so far they have proven reliable.

Are Hyper wheel and Lun wheels very different? How would you say they differ?
@@harkat16 Hey! There are many similarities, and there are also some slight differences. I use the LUN Wheels often and really like them very much. I use the HYPER Wheels very often and really like them very much as well. Both wheels I do sincerely feel are two of the best wheels in general that I have ever used. I have the LUN 45's and 60's, and the HYPER Wheels 38's 50's, and 65's. All of those wheels run perfectly now for many years and I have not had one issue negative with the wheels. I have used each set for a few thousand Kilometers over the last few years. The HYPER Wheels are stiffer, just feel faster and better at the highest level, and are bomb proof it seems. I have taken huge hits with the HYPER Wheels in accidents and holes on the roads. The HYPER Wheels roll on like they are brand new. This is after constant use and huge hits and abuse to the wheels. They are amazing wheels. The LUN Wheels are the best Wheels I have used at that particular price point. For 800$ they are pure class. The Hubs for the LUN Wheels share most of the same design aspects and internals as the HYPER Wheels. I do like the textured braking surface of the LUN WHeels, yet it does seem to be slightly more grabby and locking up if you squeeze it too hard and it heats up. The proper brake pads are key if you want to get the best stopping power for carbon rims. I have had times when the LUN Wheels seem to stick more to the brake pads under the strong force of the rim brakes when in race mode. The HYPER Wheels have always had a very predictable braking rhythm when applying the brakes under race mode forces. I think both wheels, the LUN & HYPER are made by a company that really wants to produce the finest wheels on the market. And a company that values customer service and will be there for its customers for the long term. I like both the Stainless Steel Bearings and the Ceramic Bearings. The Hubs are awesome and as mentioned before, I have been super hard on the wheels, both KUN and HYPER, and both wheels are crafted for performance and durability. If you want the most stiff wheels ever made, go with HYPER Wheels. If you want a high-quality wheelset, that performs perfectly and will deliver endless riding pleasure for a slightly lesser price, go with the LUN Wheels. Either way, you are winning.
i have 3 sets of Hyper wheelset, very happy and satisfied with it,after 3500km riding they still true like new , fast and solid. definitely i will buy again to replace my other Roadbike wheels,it is the best wheelset that you can buy with that reasonable price.

great honest review. i used to think the same about Winspace and Lun wheels. i bought a pair of disc 50 hypers in November 2021. 1st impressions were so great that in Jan 2022 ordered a second pair. well, my 1st pair never held air for more than 3 days in the front wheel. i blamed it on other possible issues. after i received my second set, i noticed the same thing . front wheel not holding air for more than 2 or 3 days. i tried 3 different brand of tires with the same result. i contacted Winspace and they requested serial numbers and the likes. 3 weeks went by and no feedback from Winspace. i contacted them again and they recommended i replace the valve stem. i tried that and no improvement. after another 2 weeks of emails with Winspace they offered a $200 credit due to the fact that the only solution they could come up with was for me to use the front wheels with inner tubes. i agreed to it. it has been more than 3 weeks now and no refund and no communication from Winspace. i am assuming i have been taken by another chinese manufacturer like many people have. do not be fooled by all the great reviews. people are getting paid to post them.

Reginald, you know more than I do about this so let me ask you about the spokes. In regards to spoke deflection (11:00) Realistically, the spokes will never bend and break like how you broke one unless the rim has been in a crash situation. I guess what I'm saying is, the spoke deflection might cause one to break but to the point it breaks in your demonstration probably won't happen unless a worse situation like a crash happens. At that point, the wheel is a total loss. Otherwise, you just replace the spoke and true it up. thoughts?
I think I follow your line of reasoning…
I was just demonstrating they they are weak from side impact. Snapping them in my had was the only way I could show that but you are right that in reality they would be fixed at both ends. However, even a minor crash or miss-hap can easily snap them in a side impact. Probably more so when they are fixed in place.
I think in most situations it will be just a case of replacement of 1 or 2 spokes. But a spoke failure at speed could result in the lost of the wheel depending on the situation.

Great - and very thorough review (I hope you do more wheel reviews!)… I have a couple of questions… 1. Can I change out the hub to a DT Swiss, Kogel, or Chris King? 2. Is truing the wheel more difficult because of the aluminum/carbon mix of the spoke?

I believe "Oz cycle" stuck a camera in the valve stem hole to evaluate the carbon fiber, and it wasn't pretty, not that it was bad. Compared it to an older Dura Ace rim, the Dura Ace was much cleaner inside. He tapped the spokes, and the difference in sound denotes the difference in tension. Might be helpful to test the tension before wheel applications. I'm going to buy a set, for the price, they seem an exceptional value.

Hello Reginald great informative review, I own the first gen hyper 50mm RB absolutely love them. Unfortunately got ran off the road by a distracted driver and cracked the rear rim, I have been surfing the internet for replacement rim only to rebuild they are off warranty so no help from Lun. Would you be able to point me the direction of a seller who has one for sale. Any help will be appreciated.
Yes I have the same problem with Winspace, they don’t hold any parts for replacement or repair. It’s frustrating and not professional of them. Sorry I can’t point you in any direction as I’m in the same situation. 😳

I agree with truing all the time and disagree with the behavior with wind. I have other 50 wheels and these are the worst with wind. I am heavier than you so normally this is not a problem in the flats, however I made the mistake of taking these to Colorado Mountains once and regretted it instantaneously. Yea otherwise accelerate very well and seem fast. Need to replace the bearing as you suggested. I make wholes on the rim tape and then patch them up when truing the wheels, otherwise I would be replacing rim tape all the time (that's how frequent I had to true these wheels).

I love direct to consumer chinese gear always have done. But now there are English media reviews from a certain clique of youtubers people have developed the same blind spots that they would previously had for the big brands and their marketing. There are a few i trust to deliver impartial reviews namely Peak Torque.
I guess it’s a money thing… if they say something negative then other companies won’t send them stuff to review.
I’m 50/50 on Mr Torque. His opinions and the data he provides are taken by some of his “Disciples” as Gospel and they get very zealot like. I think because most people don’t understand what he’s talking about when he gets really technical that he must be correct all the time. 😅

The bearings can be replaced very easily and the spokes are great! Unless you hit them from the side? Nothing is perfect, but the Hyper wheels are quite close. 😀
The alternative is something x2 the price. So when you look at the pros and cons they are still an very good choice. If you can afford something more expensive (DT Swiss) then obviously go for them.
How about an updated review with their latest design changes?

Yes avoid hybrid ceramic. Quality steel is always better.

Currently you can’t because the hub and spokes are Specific to the rim, it all works as 1 package. The only thing you can do is A) replace the bearings with something better. Or B) buy the Lun road wheels as they come with steel bearings and metal spokes as standard.

Fantastic, very interesting review. thx. I seem to crash a lot. Sitting here with a sling. Usually caused by being in wrong place at wrong time. So I think I'll stick with sapim spoked wheels for the meantime. As I'd be sure to have an unfortunate crash and wreck these wheels. Look like fantastic wheels though. I'm also a fan of longer lasting quality steel bearings too.

hi, actually what exactly the problem is with the ceramic bearing. Now Winspace says they heard the voice from customers that there is a demand in steel bearings, and a new line is introduced in the market called "SE", which uses steel bearings and costs 1000 before discount, would you suggest that I go with this one.
Also, I have received an offer that they can upgrade the bearing from steel to ceramic for free, but I need to pay the shipping charge myself (I am in Hong Kong, I think the shipping charge would not be much), any comments, tks.
@@davewong2391 Problem is the bearing "race" that the ceramic ball bearing sits in. this is usually metal which is softer than the ball bearing so the race can wear out reasonably quickly as I understand it. Hence many engineers suggest its better to go with a high quality steel bearing if possible.

Yes, you can bust the hooks on the rim. I’ve seen it happen unfortunately. Best to use your fingers or only apply light forces with plastic levers.

Do the carbon spokes effect the ride quality? Are they uncomfortably stiff on less than perfect roads?
Well, I ride metal bikes, titanium mostly so my point of view is from the perspective of a very comfortable frame. But I don’t notice any significant problem.
these wheels are very stiff and narrow, you will notice less comfort compared with other less stiff wheels for the same tire size
Spokes are supposed to bare tensile load only so comparing them with chopsticks is a bit off. Even if they are being incidentally struck from the side they are being struck while they are strung so they won't brake in the same fashion. CF should also be very durable and dimensionally stable. If everything is done right, truing won't be needed at all. But I am also slightly worried about energy absorption capability at impact (accident).
From seeing them in a crash they react in much the same way as in my test. They just snap…
They don’t seem terribly durable, carbon without paint is quite soft, you only need look at the damage to a raw carbon seatpost from a dirty saddle bag rubbing on it to confirm that.
They are good wheels and certainly strong enough, you just need to be careful when say loading them into a car. In a way you wouldn’t think twice with steel spokes.

Regarding durability I somehow agree and disagree at the same time. Carbon fiber - epoxy composite is very durable at intended cyclic loads (along fiber), way more than aluminum for example. But if you accidentally load material across fiber you will load epoxy which is weak and can fail instantly. I would say latter is not matter of durability, but matter of robustness.
CF won't elongate much before they break, that's also why I question the ability to absorb energy at impact.
If you compare spoke and seatpost you will see that load case in the seatpost is more complex and more problematic regarding anisotropic materials. Spokes are perfect usage case of fibrous composite. I think the material in theory does not even need epoxy because it will only be subjected to pure tensile loads. But the critical points are aluminum joints at the ends, if delamination occurs at the whole length it will affect those.
That's my two cents, but I must say I am not any authority for that matter, I am just talking out of my head. So I stand to be corrected.

Buy the cheaper ones that come with the steel bearings (they now offer that as an option.) or ride them for a few 100 KM and buy some quality steel bearings for them. That’s what I need to do, my bearings are toast!!!

If you want something dependable and something for road and light gravel a set of DT Swiss P1800 aluminium wheels are always a good choice, or the PR1600s if you have the money. I’d avoid carbon road wheels for gravel riding in general.

Question for you:
I ride tubeless now, tubes earlier.
Main reason being several pinch-flat punctures like in your video, sometimes while descending from steep mountains.
Luckily i never crashed, even though tires deflated instantly.
I have also experienced punctures with tubeless, without the sealant fixing it, but sudden deflation will not happen.
Why don't you prefer tubeless, especially after experiencing punctures like that?

You obviously don’t need to answer but for myself I actually make a promise to reach a target before I buy new stuff. For example I will say. “I will get new wheels when I drop 2kg from my body.” Or “I will buy that new frame when I can ride up this hill on my heavier bike.” Target 🎯 and reward 🏆
As for tubeless, I could make a video about that… but the short answer is: simple cost benefit analysis.
Tubeless requires more time to install and costs more+ new bike pump + sealant. More issues, more hassle, more mess, for not enough improvement to justify it (for me.) I have seen them fail in a number of ways and it always leads to a mess. I’m a bit OCD and I can’t stand sticky mess! Ha ha

I agree about tubeless being messy, and i have experienced them not sealing a leak.
My decision was based mostly on safety, as sudden deflation will not occur.
I have had pinch flats down both Mont Ventoux and Alpe d' Hues, luckily while going in a straight line.
Still, not a pleasant experience.

Well that depends on where you live, the rates at your local bike shop, if you can get a friend to do it and what sort of bearings you use quality wise?
But a good bearing is going to be about $10-15 each (The DT ones in my shop are $18 BND each)
I'm on rim brakes and have some very steep and twisty descents which I'm on a lot. How is the braking on the Winspace (dry and wet) and any fears of delamination of the brake track? I'm looking at the Lun Hyper SE R45 (2023).
Both is fine. Although if you are worried I’d opt for the LUN ROAD wheels. They are significantly cheaper and the brake track has a ridged surface for better wet weather performance. As for wearing out the brake track I wouldn’t worry. It needs + 200C before you melt them, I did a steep 1000m decent on them with tight corners and they only got to like 40C. Also if you go for deep rims 50+ mm then the carbon will dissipate the heat easily. 👍🏻🙂
I am eyeing the 2023 model. Ready to add them to my cart, then I discuss with a friend who asked me if I also buy a full face helmet, being explicit for this brand. I am 88 kg, that is why, he told me. Semi pro guy some years ago. I am totally confused.

Humm, 88kg isn’t bad, they are good for 120kg I believe, but not everyone needs such light wheels. For reliability I’d go for the cheaper LUN ROAD, the breaking surface is better and they are more sturdy in their construction. 👌🏻

If you just want looks and a bit of extra aero buy don’t race then I’d go for the LUN road wheels. They are $500 BND cheaper than the Hyper and more durable as they use traditional metal spokes and steel bearings. At the price and quality you can’t go wrong. 🙂👍🏻

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm currently considering the 2023 Hypers. Winspace says it's "aero optimized" for 25-28mm tires, which is a plus because I prefer the comfort of 28s. That said, should I take their word for it despite not satisfying the 105% rule? Or should I downsize to 25s to maximize aero efficiency, or is it negligible even with 28s? Thanks 😊
Well, you are asking a guy who rides on 23s… 😄
This is the way I see it, if you are look for max comfort, then you are willing to sacrifice speed. So then it doesn’t really matter what wheels you buy if you plan to put 28s on them. And no I don’t think they are being honest when they say it’s optimised for 25s and 28s because that’s a big difference. Also, be careful of what brand of tyre you use, some are bigger than they say. For example conti 28s are 30mm on most wheels.
Personally i haven't bought a single new bike/wheelset where the hubs and seals (if they even came with seals) weren't completely dry. And it always makes me wonder how high the return rate of wheels are, because without grease on especially the cassette side of the rear hub where there is rarely a seal on lower end wheels, a simple washing with a brush can destroy your entire hub. Hence why i now always disassemble at least that side of the rear hub just to pack it with grease to hopefully save the fragile bearing from the elements. The last wheelset i bought only lasted a single ride in the rain before both hubs were completely destroyed, with zero after sales support. I had to buy and install new bearing myself and after actually packing them with grease they lasted another 2 years with daily commuting in often, very wet conditions. It just goes to show that, for me, wheels are always skimping on grease and you risk destroying your hubs on new bikes due to this fact.
That’s a very good observation. Personally never had the same level of problems with older wheels but I did notice more modern and more expensive stuff definitely are a bit on the dry side.
@@reginaldscot165 biggest issue for me is that you can peek right through the cassette on both of my cheaper wheelsets and the bearing is completely exposed. So the only option is a lot of grease right behind the locking ring. Seems like a little cap with a rubber ring is the last place you'd save a buck on an entire wheelset. Idk what they're doing. Maybe I'm just unlucky with my wheels. I'll buy some proper carbon rims eventually :P

For most people aluminium are fine, but with carbon getting so well priced there are definitely some advantages to owning a set.
Well, in a lot of cases alloy wheels are fine, in particular for day to day training. I used to use Easton EA-90 SL wheels for many years, which were pretty light at around 1,400 grams but obviously not aero by any means. I did eventually crack one of the Eastons near a spoke nipple - didn't know I had done so until the bike shop pointed it out. I switched to the Hypers in 2019 or so, and in certain situations you can definitely feel a difference in speed, particularly with a cross tail wind as the wheels act like a sail. I got a pair of Winspace Lun 30's for windy days (and there's a lot of wind here in Tucson, and also where I lived in SoCal for 5 years prior) as the Hypers can get a little dicey in 20+ mph winds in certain types of terrain. The Lun 30's are a good wheel as well, seem pretty bombproof and they seem to deflect the wind even better than my lower profile Eastons did, and more importantly, I don't need to adjust my rim brakes switching between wheelsets like I had to when I used to use my Eastons and then switch to my Enve's (the Enves were utter garbage, BTW). For the price point, the Winspace wheels are hard to beat. I do have a set of the Winspace gravel wheels, but haven't used them yet as I finally got my bike in that I ordered nearly 2 years ago. I'm looking forward to testing those ones out too.
The HYPER Wheels are the way to go if you want the best wheels for your team.
I'd almost decided to give some Hyper 23 D33s a go to help get my overly rotund 110kg body up and over the Cotswolds. But your review scares me. I'm wondering now whether I'll put them out of true first ride, break spokes all the time and spend all my time waiting for replacements from China.
I don’t think you will break any spokes unless you crash, but they may come out of true and they are a slight pain to sort out.

OK, very successful and helpful review, but I would like to know something about the stiffness compared to the wheels, e.g. DT SWISS ARC 62, or in these Hyper wheels the stiffness of the rim is similar to DT SWISS. Does the DT Swiss rim bend in the middle under pressure as in these wheels? Is it better to buy DT SWISS 62 ARC or these hyper 65mm wheels ?
If you can afford DT Swiss, buy DT Swiss. They are definitely better wheels, especially the hubs, but also the build quality and durability. And they are probably a bit more aerodynamic. The only disadvantage to DT is the price and they are slightly heavier, but not by much.

@@reginaldscot165 Okay, but what about the stiffness because it has not been mentioned is there a very big difference in stiffness between these DT and Hyper wheels? People write that these Hyper are great for criterium races where most of them are sprints and strong ones, I'm not convinced in this belief but ...? Generally, I hunt for a high 65mm cone, it's hard to find anything at a good price, everything starts at $ 2000. DT great but low 62mm only:(. You wrote about aerodynamics but in your tests it turns out that these Hyper are faster than DT, I assume it has an impact the height of the cone So the aspect of aerodynamics in DT Swiss is probably dictated by profiling, that's how I understand it, and in Hyper it's simply the height of the cone that counts at the expense of less aerodynamics due to the rim profile used, do I understand correctly ?
@@TheWip140 The carbon Hyper 50mm was tested against a DT Swiss aluminium 21mm wheel. The reason for the comparison was based on price and weight as a 21mm DT PR1400 is similar weight and price to the Hyper. But obviously the 50mm deep wheel is more aero than a 21mm. If you put a DT 50mm against it I’m sure the results would be different.
I have no way to test for stiffness in a reliable manner. But I would imagine the hyper to be slightly stiffer, but I can’t say if it would be significant.

I'm quite worried about these ceramic bearings lifespan, and surprised at the same time. I currently own a pair of DT Swiss Arc 1100 and rode 45k on them, they have ceramic bearings as well and they're still ok. Anyways, I will be buying the Hypers 23 R45, but don't know if I should be going for SE or butterfly weave, the main concern is that SE has a textured, groovy braking surface, but the Hypers with butterfly weave doesn't have, can you tell if they will brake better and also last longer?
My rims were destroyed, Are these hubs compatible with anything besides the OEM and does winspace sell the rims separately?
No and yes. But supply is a big issue. They are not supportive in providing parts I’ve found.
What do you think about the Hunt wheels. Have you did any review on them?
I have seen a few in the shop, generally not that impressive, also also seen some issues with failures. I’d avoid as for the price you can get something better.

The Elite Drive D40 is actually way lighter than even the new version of the Hypers they just released a few days ago but has the same rim specs. Similar price. Other than the Elite Drive series though nothing else comes close to the value of the Hypers. I just ordered the new Hypers, we'll see how they perform in real life.

Plenty comes close to the value of the Hypers and arguably exceed them.
First brand that comes to mind is LightBicycle. Superior aero shapes are available. Their 56mm falcons come to Mind with a wider / better aero shape to it optimised for a wider range of tyre widths. Non-propriatry spokes and hubs. LB builds wheels to your spec. So you can choose your spokes and hubs. And at the end of the day once all is said and done the LB's are very similar in stiffness and strength and also weight without the pitfalls of the carbon spokes and funny hubs. Not bad wheels but certainly not the best value out there.
@@alastairstedman7840 If you're talking about Chinese wheel builders then you can get lighter wheels with better specs or brand like DT hubs for cheaper. Farsport and Gozone and many others.
The inner rim bead looks huge. How difficult is it to remove the tire off the rim?

Well, the ones Hyper supply are good. Nice and soft. If you want better wet weather stuff try the BBB Carbstop pads. But, I personally use the Winspace pads.
14:52..... hybrid ceramic bearings don't last very long. Proceeds to smash a hybrid ceramic ball bearing with a sledge hammer and does nothing to the ball. Ball dents the vice flat metal surface.

Hi Reginald, I just bought the R45s for rim brake but my wheels don't have any special "braking surface" alone the rim. As for as I can tell, the surface where the brakes touch is carbon just like the rest of the wheel. But I thought rim brake wheelsets come with special braking surface? Can you help.

The older version did for Lun road, the Lun Hyper doesn’t have anything anymore. Maybe it’s an update version of Lun Road you have? Best people to ask are Winspace if you have any problems. 👍🏻

The older Hypers are on clearance now. I need a new wheelset for a new Ti bike build and can't decide if it is worth pay extra for the new D33 or older Hyper 35s. My head is telling me to save the money and go for the older ones.

Comparing breaking points between carbon fiber and stainless steel to conclude that steel is better is a bit unscientific. We know the strength and lightness of fibers against steel are of different category. Using the hand to break a spoke or bamboo chopstick may be 'dramatic' in a way, but still unscientific. What if you use a gauged press to find out the breaking point? What if we try to bend the fiber with a controlled force and apply the same to a stainless steel spoke, will the steel spoke return to its original straightness? Will the carbon fiber bend permanently like the stainless steel spoke?
If the same crash happened to a stainless steel spoked wheelset, the rim would have collapsed with the spoke bent, rendering the rim useless because of the pressure of the impact on the rim. The video did not show what happened to the rim. Did it explode also like the spoke, or did it receive cracks or damage?
Again, scratching the spoke with a screwdriver to show that it is not as strong as steel is unscientific. Physics dictates that hardness is defined by its scratch resistance by another substance. Using steel to scratch the fiber is nonsense. We are not after hardness, but pulling power or strength under load. It would have been scientific if tension was applied as a pulling force and measured how much weight each would hold without any deterioration. Spokes are used to pull the rim edges to the hub and weighted as much as possible equally. How much tension can the spokes hold with the nipples not giving out and also the spokes themselves?
Checking the rim by cutting it in half seems to be lacking. A section of the rim with the spoke holes could have been cut in order to see from both sides without too much usage of an external light.
The rim structure is like that of an egg. Putting pressure on the side of the egg breaks the egg. But, putting pressure on the ends of the egg does not. Mere stepping on the side the rim is also unscientific. How about a measured weight put onto the side until breaking point?

Snapping the spoke is what happened to the spoke when it was in the crash, I’m “demonstrating” how easy it is to snap by doing a “comparison” with a chopstick. That’s it. Did I at any point say “this is a scientific test?” Nope.
The kind of measuring equipment you are talking about is the sort of stuff only a large laboratory or research Center would have. I just have a workshop and 1 broken wheel to play with. Not 100s of wheels and spokes I can smash in a controlled environment. Why don’t you go and spend $1000s on that and post the results for us?
Yes the video did show what happened to the rim. That’s the rim I cut up, try to pay attention, I mentioned that in the video.
The scratch test showed Exactly what it was designed to show. If you rub the carbon spoke against a harder material it will degrade. That’s it, nothing more complicated than that. And nine times out of 10 when you drop your carbon wheels on something, or hit them against something it’s going to be harder than carbon. If you do the same test with a steel spoke and steel screwdriver then nothing will happen. So therefore steel is more robust than carbon. I’m sorry that bothers you, but it’s just a fact.
You can’t assume that if the wheel that was crashed had steel spokes it would have broken. You don’t know that because you don’t know the forces involved and how the wheel would have reacted.
I didn’t cut the rim up anymore because I wanted the 2 halves of the rim for future projects. That’s why I used a torch.
Stepping on the rim is not a scientist test, it’s a “demonstration.” I am showing what happens if you step on the rim. What use would the braking point data be to an average person anyway.
I know the rim gains it’s strength from its shape. I mentioned that in the video. Yes it’s like an egg. But I stood on it and it still didn’t crack, so that’s a very positive point for the wheel.
The problem here is:
1) you don’t listen and pay attention enough.
2) You seem to live in a delusion that everyone in RUclips has the funding and technology to conduct every video as a scientific test. Not only is that unreasonable and unrealistic but it’s also not the only type of useful data.

I have purchased two sets with a promotion Winspace had. Asked to exchange to a disc version from a rim brake model, same price and I would paying shipping to return and ship identical exchange and they said no. Never again. Horrible customer service.

Sidewalls are not the strength of carbon rims because they are not supposed to be.
The rim shape is designed to be fit for purpose and it obviously is.
Fair crack at some backyard engineering though. Certainly not too technical but practical.

I do, they work fine and have an almost perfect fit with the Sides of the rim. 👍🏻
People buy these for carbon spokes n ceramic bearings, if you don’t like them, you don’t like them, they are not down falls, just personal dislikes. But I personally, yes, also prefer steel bearings n metal spokes, but it will bump up the weight at least 30g to 50g.
Some truth to that. 👍🏻 People who don’t like hybrid ceramic bearings are just people that know they are rubbish. Ha ha everyone else who likes them just need time to work that out. 😅

The hooks with the wheels are WAY to aggressive as Winspace admits it. I literally can’t change tire tires because the beads within the tires get stuck! Winspace won’t do anything about it
Yes changing tyres on theses wheels is a nightmare. You have to prep well.

The bead lock on Winspace HYPER rims are indeed solid. I had a harder time unseating beads of a tubeless tire. Strong thumbs required for this one.

You make a lot of assumptions about spoke strength, zero science behind it. Instead of this video people would do better to watch Leuscher Teknik video where he actually tests these spokes under measured tension. And over my 25yrs of racing and training I’ve had many spokes break so your point is not really valid.

Assumptions? If you watch the video I tell of a real life situation where the spokes failed and I demonstrate how that happened and how easy they are to snap. Is that not useful information free from assumptions?
I have seen the video you referenced, pulling the spokes in a linear direction to test tensile strength Is playing to the advantages of carbon fibre. Also useful information, but not the worst case scenario as spokes are designed to deal with that type of stress.
As for “Zero Science…” the definition is “the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.” (I also confirmed with my PHD Scientist wife.)
By that metric there is Science in this video. ☺️
YES they re fast light and aero but cost too much for what you get and not as DURABLE as a good as alloy wheels especially for RIM brakes .l like yrs of use not mths BUT you have money to waist go for it these are the best bang for lots of bucks !!
