  • Make This Your Atheist New Year's Resolution
    Hemant Mehta (www.friendlyath..., / hemant , / friendlyatheist )
    Happy new year! It's been a while. An infant will do that to you. I hope you're well.
    Since the new year is here, and you may be thinking about resolutions, I wanted to make one suggestion for something all of you can do this year: Try spreading reason, in some way, to people who aren't using it.
    That doesn't mean you have to start an argument or convince a religious relative to abandon Jesus. Good luck with that. But maybe you come across a friend spreading a picture on Facebook that contains misinformation. I want you to politely explain why that information is wrong. Back it up with a citation. I know they might dismiss it or ignore it, but do it.
    Maybe you read a news story that gets the facts wrong. Write to that newspaper or reporter and politely let them know what they screwed up. (Better yet, share that letter on social media.)
    Maybe someone you know promotes alternative medicine, or some mid-level marketing scheme, or thinks your astrological sign has something to do with how you act, or wants to go on a detox diet. Talk to them. Guide them to a path of reason. Do it privately if that's easier. You don't have to publicly shame them.
    The point is: Try to spread critical thinking in some way, especially if that's something you don't do already. You don't have to be a jerk about it. You don't have to do it all the time. But don't be afraid of it. We could use more critically thinking people out there willing to push back when they see something that's false.
    If there's one thing I've learned from making videos like these for a few years, it's that you're bound to get pushback when you try to spread what you think are reasonable arguments -- I see your downvotes and nasty comments -- but I also get a lot of really wonderful messages, privately, from people who says these videos made a difference. You don't need a platform like this to do that yourself.
    And even if your corrections don't change the mind of the person who made the comment in the first place, there's a good chance you might change the mind of a stranger who's reading it. You never know.

      When it comes to mentioning logical fallacies, I do that all the time with articles about science being wrong and it's never been embraced by atheists. When I mentioned how the 1st two sets of fossils were discovered to be the same species, name calling is the most common retort...

      I always wonder why I have had so many mysterious mental/spiritual experiences until now, so I think I have different sense from atheist people. Fortunately, I had gone to hospital, and doctor said I'm not Metal illness.
      I rarely hear that atheist had mysterious mental/spiritual experiences.
      So, I can agree with atheist about that these is no (existential/scientific/physical) proof about God or deities, but as my own experiences and opinions, I believe God or deities exist in different dimension or other world.
      And I'm really sad to say this, but honestly, maybe those are just delusion or imaginations by my singular brain or mental. So, that's why I'm skeptical theist (Natural/Fatal theism).
      So, I want to ask atheist people, Do/Did you have any mysterious mental/spiritual experiences?

    • @aaronrosenberg6633
      @aaronrosenberg6633 6 лет назад +4

      Sure I have. Several times throughout my life. Some of those times I may have even considered something external to myself as the cause. But no more. There's still much we don't understand about the brain, and if your synapses fire in weird ways sometimes, you don't have be labeled as "mentally ill."
      But knowing what the brain is capable of (think of schizophrenic people, who have both auditory and visual hallucinations), ask yourself what's more probable - that your experiences are a product of your own brain plus confirmation bias, or that an external deity is trying to communicate with you. Look up Hume's Maxim.

      EXS With what reason have you turned atheist? What in this world indicates that it’s not possible or not likely for God to exist? Man, seeing people like this is irritating. So many people thinking they’ve escaped, when they have only viewed a few sides of a very very huge topic. Many people here probably think they’re right and think religion has no Critical arguments. Those that do think that way, you’re awfully ignorant, and you’re making a huge assumption.
      That isn’t critical at all. If you do that, you’re awfully not a critical thinker. A critical thinker will always acknowledge that there is always more to it than they can currently observe. A critical thinker would try to search everywhere for the right answer, and not just some debunkers of some common points from some religions.
      A long time ago, I obviously made the same mistakes. But as I learned more, and stated actually thinking and researching on subjects I viewed important, I realized I was not a critical thinker. Just because I was trying to think logically didn’t mean I was a critical thinker. I attempted to be, but never knew what it truly meant to be critical in thinking, even though I valued critical thinking and logic.
      I used to think that one a huge topic, if I just found some common argument and debunked them, I thought I’d be a critical thinker. But no, that’s not at all. A critical thinker doesn’t stop after debunking some common points. They go into every detail, every perspective, and every aspect.
      For you to become an atheist, and a “heavy” atheist at that, means you’re not critically thinking. For any subject that isn’t directly confirmed with facts, you shouldn’t have a “strong” belief. Rather, you should be open minded. Being open minded in the way to be critical. Constantly attack points with an unbiased, logical, and factual way. Then start attacking even your own points and opinions. Being critical is to not only be critical of other’s points, but also yours, and everyone’s points and perspectives.
      At the very least, don’t be a “heavy” atheists. I could write a whole book of words to convince you as to why God exists, but I don’t have the time to do that. And I doubt someone so stubborn on a belief would listen well. If you don’t want to spend 10 years of your life looking everywhere to find the true answer, then at least be agnostic. There is literally no reason to believe that God does not exist.

    • @ミコムみこむ
      @ミコムみこむ 4 года назад

      @@goldencookie5456 For you to assume that strongly being an atheist is ignorant is awfully ignorant in its own right lmaooo.
      Let me clear up a few things. I was religious for most of my life. I had a strong belief in Christianity and truly believed that when I died that i'd go to heaven. And as I became older, I realized that I didn't have much of an actual basis for those beliefs.
      I looked for evidence to support God and even tried debunking atheist sources but it didn't work out. After enough time, my disbelief in God grew stronger than my belief in God.
      If someone were to come out with substantiated proof for God, then, by all means, I would believe. It's not like I personally have anything against him. I just don't see him really being believable.
      And even if he were proven to exist (The God of Christianity that is), I'd have nowhere to actually look to for guidance due to the contradictions in his word and the questionable traits within his personality.
      Tl;dr I looked for proof of god for a very long time and I have nothing against him. I don't act like there is no god, I just don't personally believe that there is one, just like I'm assuming you personally believe there is one but can't actually give me a hand written document from god himself.

    • @goldencookie5456
      @goldencookie5456 4 года назад

      EXS There it is. You’re a heavy atheist just because you searched up the internet and couldn’t find much answers? So you are putting all the credibility in your ability to research the truth within the internet, and without much dedication? That’s basically what it is. For you to have a heavy opinion about a subject and not be considered widely ignorant about it, you’d have to know a very large range of arguments and ideas from various people and groups.
      For you to just search the internet for a while, and assume it was good enough of a reason to heavily be an atheist, shows that you aren’t critical enough about the subject. You have to realize that there may be something you have never ever even thought of. The world is huge and there are so many different ideas and beliefs. And you expect you’d find a clear answer without heavy research for years?
      That is what shows you’re ignorant. The fact that these simple videos has heavily affected you in becoming an atheist shows that you are ignorant. If it was some big time physicist that said atheism was right, I wouldn’t call them ignorant. Or at least I wouldn’t call them widely ignorant, because they’ve dedicated their life onto finding the truth about the universe, and have some big insight and knowledge in the universe and it’s properties.
      However, that doesn’t mean I think physicists are right about the universe.
      So here, I will give my evidence as to why God exists.
      But no. I have to prepare for my exams and do assignments. So I’ll give you reasons later. It’s a big pain in the face to right a whole essay when I’m busy with having to write real essays for grades. You don’t have to reply right now. I will at the very least give you a reply within a week or so.

    A) nothing formed something and a big expansion happened and just formed everything.
    B) energy came from nowhere and just formed everything
    C) theirs existence so a intelligent mind is behind this so we have a creator to bring everything into existence
    D) any answer or convincing explanation for our existence as long as it doesn’t involve A creator.
    If you gave me an explanation that doesn’t involve a creator than tell me how did everything come into existence From nothing like every, molecule,atoms, cells, and so on explain how everything that existed or exist now came into existence and where did these tools to bring them into existence come from.

    Atheist reason .... funny ..... everything blew up out of nothing (from literally no matter, to a universe full of matter). Yeah that’s great reasoning. Or a pre-existing mind made a deliberate decision and caused it to be, with infinitely intricate balance. Yes that’s much more likely, organisation by design, not from chance.

    I don't have to worry, I've read the Bible. So when I die, I'll go towards the light, fearing nothing. I can't discount a Hell because it's mentioned many times in the Bible. There are many people who've died and ended up there. Only to be pulled out by Jesus. We are living in an evil world, where people love darkness more than the light. These dark souls will never believe in a higher power because they don't want to believe there's judgement. We all deserve Hell, but Jesus died for us on the cross. Do we as humans deserve his mercy? Hell no. I know there's a place called Heaven that awaits believers. How you ask yourself can I be so sure? Knowledge is power. Read the Bible for yourself. Once we die, it's too late. Even on our deathbed a priest comes in to pray for our soul. If that's not Godly love, then I don't know what is.

    • @Mordal1222
      @Mordal1222 6 лет назад

      *I can't discount a Hell because it's mentioned many times in the Bible.*
      But the Torah says there is no Hell. How do you know which one is right?
      *These dark souls will never believe in a higher power because they don't want to believe there's judgement.*
      How do you know what led atheists to believe there is no God? All you can do is make assumptions.
      I don't believe in God for many reasons, but I do wish there was an actual judgment.
      *We all deserve Hell...*
      Then it seems humans are doomed to be evil. Is a God who creates a race in a specific way and then punishes them for what they are a sadist or just a dimwit?
      *...but Jesus died for us on the cross.*
      I don't see the point of that. Jesus is the incarnation of God. His death is just a price for God to pay to God.
      It's as if you paid yourself and received the money to help an old man cross the street. And then bragged about how you gave money to help someone in need.
      *I know there's a place called Heaven that awaits believers. How you ask yourself can I be so sure? Knowledge is power. Read the Bible for yourself.*
      I know there's a place called Valhalla that awaits warriors who died heroically in battle. How you ask yourself can I be so sure? Knowledge is power. Read the Eddas for yourself.
      *Once we die, it's too late.*
      You just said many people went to Hell but were brought back by Jesus...

    I never believed in god but im started to think of a higher power. Im tired of believing everything is a
    coincidence. Im starting not to think how we are here because science tells us this. Im starting to think WHY are we here. Think about it. Life cannot be a coincidence. Something had to create life and why did it? And if something did it but would the universe do it? Where im getting at is how does life benifet the universe at all? The universe will be fine without life so why are we here after all? IF WE ARE HERE JUST TO DIE THEN WHY ARE WE ALIVE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Some shit is going on we dont know about :/

    Give me one real reason to live and I'll give you some credit. No bullshit of being moral, volonturing,family, love,friends,sex,career,passions making the most of it. You're only still young so you're not aware of how close your end is. When you're at the edge of dying, you need more than those temporary reasons to explain your existence. If the answer is:"there is no particular reason to exist", then why are you trying so hard to give it a reason, why won't you and all of us die when we're not COMPLETELY happy as it comes whit a relief (that means everyone should die if you didn't get it). If the answer is something else, I'm truly open to listen to it but again no bullshit. Sorry if it sounds rude.
    Ps: Morality isn't something innate that all people share, it's a bunch of codes that stronger societies obliges everyone to stick to and that changed over time. Proof is that societies before mondialisation had really different legislation and "indigenous" societies killed and robbed without any remorse.Also maybe in a post-apocalyptic future it would be just convenient if you eat your daughter because you need to survive. Therefore, yes, in this world where most rules are originally religiously based, when you think they're obvious to any sain person, you're just having some contradictory argument. You're not supposed to be moral if you follow a purely scientific reasonning. If you're not being entirely scientific, then you're just as a believer as religious people.

    For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man-and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

Just because someone is Christian does not mean they are wrong, misinformed, or not using logic. That is just YOUR opinion and perspective. Don't believe in God? Great. Believe in God? Great. Let's not impose on each other that one of us is wrong or misinformed. No one in this universe knows what is out there.

    This is exactly what I've been wanting to do, and I'm looking forward to taking that Critical Thinking class in two weeks. One non aggressive way to use those skills is with the following example. I heard a man state in a documentary that if the bible said 2+2=5 he would believe it because the bible said so. To me that was mind blowing stupidity but I figure I could take this statement into account when it comes to people's beliefs in the bible. When people beleive everything the bible says without testing it, it's just as idiotic as saying that oil and water mix just because it's written on a random piece of paper. This is the logic that I want to explain to a few Christians out there who constantly ask me what is the problem Atheists have with the bible and why they disregard and get annoyed with Christians who keep quoting the bible. Hope what I said makes enough if not feel free to add or correct me if I'm wrong. Whether I get feedback or not great videos, I've learned so much from them.

    I love your videos❤I have a 7 year old, and a 5 year old. I would like to know if you have any advice or can you make a video about how to raise children to be freethinkers. My daycare provider is the sweetest. She has helped me by babysitting my kids and teaching them academics ever since they were born. I can tell she loves them like her own. Sometimes she mentions stories from the bible, and says "God loves you" to them, they come home and tell me what she said. I think theyre confused. I tell them that I don't know if there is a God, and we should do our own research before we believe something. I think they believe her more because they trust her, and the majority of people they know believe or follow some type of religion. How can I get my kids to not be so easily influenced, or how do I tell the babysitter how I feel?

    Can you make a video about churches in America and how they work, I often see folk on RUclips that call themselves for priest, minister, pastor or something like that and many churches look a bit like corporations that want to earn money by have many followers rather than have many followers to keep spread the word of Jebus, in other countries you often need an education to be able to get those titles and they often do more than just perache in the church, they need to do paperwork for marriages and burials and so on, but in America I sometime get the feeling you can call yourself priest as fast as you can make a vertical video from inside a car.

It's been almost 4 years that I'm an atheist, and I owe it to your and other atheist's videos because in my country there is no talking about atheism. The atheists here are told to stay in a corner and don't even try to make a peep, they have to act as they don't exist. It's hard to spread critical thinking in a place where that isn't welcome, where you will be told to keep your ideas to yourself. I will try to spread critical thinking where I can.
