    DO NOTE that this does not take a lot of variables into account. It bakes all player levels into one (beginner-intermediate-high-pro). It does not go back to Original release.
    Some characters are played way more than others.

      At last, mate! Glad you realized that tiers should be done not by Pros and individuals, but based on statistics. BUT! But there's one more step - split those tiers based on ranks - now that's seems like a job for a Superman! (c). But really. E.g. Lei on lower ranks/lower experience in game is a monster that can f**k you up 10 matches in a row, but damn f*cking brainheater if you play him on higher ranks when people know his cheese and weknesses (ha-ha, punishable lows SNK4... who would knew).
      While Steve, on the other hand, is very weak for begginers due to unorthodox controls and execution barrier, while being M-M-M-Monster! on mid and high lvl.
      P.S.Just for the record, I'm playing both of those and some more - so it's not a whine about "Buff my main, nerf my nemesis". Just some experience from someone who came into "serious" Tekken only in T7.

      I also think everyone from King down has somewhat to do with how much Tournament play they get. Literally everyone knows the match up. Every single person past blue ranks has labbed out Xiaoyu at some point. Even I know the throw breaks for King. Everyone knows Steeve's weakness in lows and how he fishes for counter hits (which is harder online because of lag.

    •  4 года назад

      @@rrteppo True. The problem is, a lot of Leis and Yoshis and Xiaoyus don't really know how to utilize most of their moves. You can't just spam snake edge or launch punishable moves with some crushing properties your way to the top. Even green ranks know what the most punishable moves are.

      @crysack8513 4 года назад +11

      @@hugoguerreiro1078 Honestly, that probably has very little to do with online win-rates. Gigas players benefit significantly from character ignorance in the general online population. Everyone and their Grandma understands how to deal with a Mishima or a King but nobody labs Gigas. To someone who hasn't looked into the character closely, Gigas can seem pretty unconventional and oppressive.
      The same applies to characters like Anna and Chloe.

    • @hugoguerreiro1078
      @hugoguerreiro1078 4 года назад +5

      @@crysack8513 I'm not saying matchup knowledge isn't a factor, but you can't explain everything with that. This might be why TMM is so surprised by some of these winrates. Obviously player skill is a big factor, and when you have characters like Paul that are huge scrub magnets it reflects on their winrate.
      It was the same with LoL winrates back when I still played it, it was very common for really good and easy champions to have a bad winrate at low ranks simply because most people playing them were meta sheep following the latest trend without actually taking the time to learn the character. Then again it was a lot easier to see this on that game because you could break down winrates by matchup and by rank.

Someone like Bob is not terribly popular but those who play him are on average better players. Same with Nina and Eliza, imo.
    Claudio and Leroy are just paradigmatic characters that are easy to use and very strong all around. I think Leroy is basically broken still, considering his execution demands and damage potential. The biggest hit to her was the shadow nerf of the hit boxes, where a lot more mids hit AoP, and the other characters’ buffs gave them hard counters to Ling’s play. Previous games, she was weak, but sneaky. You could dance around people and they couldn’t touch you, but you had to play long sets and do a lot of small damage combos. Now, they buffed her damage, making her better in S1, but they gutted her evasiveness and sneaky play in S2 and S3, effectively nerfing her entire playstyle. Now someone can’t just play defense and Ling has nothing.

      1.) Most of the people who buy the DLC characters are already invested into the game (usually high skilled players), so they would obviously win more often with that DLC character than a beginner with a DLC character. This is basically what happens to characters like Jin and Yoshimitsu: beginners want to try them because they look appealing, and then they get destroyed in online matches against people with actual experience. This doesn't happen to, say, Ganryu and Zafina because, as TheMainManSWE said, mostly high skilled players play these characters.
      2.) Obviously, people ~most of the time~ tend to struggle more against DLC characters because not as many people use them as the non-DLC. I've personally faced more or less 300 Kazuyas in game, so I have a pretty good grasp on his strings and punishes. But, I've only played against a Marduk once, and I got completely annihilated as Dragunov, a top tier character. That Marduk probably had a lot of experience against Dragunovs whereas I had no experience against Marduk, which caused me to get bodied. If I played against as many Marduks as Kazuyas, I would've most likely stood a chance against that Marduk.
      Point of the matter is, DLC characters are not inherently overpowered. Sure, Leroy was insane, but he got nerfed heavily. The other DLC characters wouldn't, at the highest level, be able to beat the non-DLC characters.

    Pointed it in the chat, and I might as well do it over here as well.
    This list is absolutely not a "Real Tekken Tier List". That is just not true. The reason for this is that 99.9% of the playerbase ends up stuck somewhere, with a 50% win rate. You may be a Genbu spamming Noctis or a struggling green rank Kazuya, this is reality. Keep also in mind that this is data only from season 3, thus anyone who climbed earlier than that will show that 50% "final" win rate.
    Now then, why the differences ? The reason is the influx of new stuff.
    The new characters, who you can see are at the top, are there specifically because seasoned players pick them at the lower rank they start in and bring them up to their other characters levels, resulting in an inflated win rate.
    The new balance changes let people win/lose more in the short term until they find their new stuck point with the changed charaters.
    Then finally the new players. I can't stress new hard enough here. They are people who did not yet start struggling ranking up. Basically scrubs, gifted or terrible alike.
    So it shows us two thing and only those two things: the new one is how well a character is doing COMPARED TO HOW THEY DID IN SEASON 2. The second one is how well a character can carry a brand new player, basically how much doe they help their win rate, and for how long all in one. And keep in mind these two are not connected in the slightest, so even when looking at it this way, there is not much said here.
    Hope this helps clear the wild misunderstanding happening here. This is not "beginner to intermediate" or "online" tier list TMM claims it is. it is only telling of the ranks fluctuation of characters in an already existing tier list of some sort, in absolute values, and new players experience with their characters of choice (in the earliest ranks only), all at once in varying degrees. Again, this is NOT an real online tier list.

    Yeah this makes sense. In Season 1 I ranked 12 characters up to warrior and in season 2 I ranked up a different set of 12 characters to Genbu. I did this to get a better understanding of the game before I picked a set of main characters to focus on. Jin, Kazuya, King, Paul and Lei were by far the hardest to rank up with. Where as it was not easy but legit easier to rank up Nina, Kasumi, Gigas, Jack, Marduk, Dragunov and other characters. This of course was just my experience. In season 1 I picked a couple of mains and in season 2 I added a couple more.
    Jin, Kazuya, King and Paul are all extremely popular characters(and Jin and Kazuya require more execution and movement skill in general) so I think most people know the match up. Making it harder to rank up. The reason I think Lei is so low is not to far from way Hwoarang is so low(I played Hwo to). Lei doesn't have any execution requirements really(outside of a good ha ha step) but because his move list is so massive(there are like 60 hidden moves and transitions not even in the movelist) it is hard to learn his depth. He has like 3-7 passive properties for more then half his stances(over 12 stances). So I think it is hard to branch out past his most popular moves and setups. And those are usually popular enough that people know how to deal with them. So it takes skill to get past that and his bad frames. It is just much easier to play another character. So I think that is a double edge sword of why he has a low pick rate but he doesn't get the benefits of it as well and he also had a low win rate. Unlike characters like Gigas, the bears or Eliza IMO.

    As a kid playing tekken 4 and tekken 5 at home i fell in love with yoshimitsu because he stood out the most( unblockables, healing, etc). Tekken 7 comes out, i buy it and of course decide to main yoshi. Let me tell you, it was one of the hardest gaming challenges not just to rank up, but just try to understand his gameplan and in general how to be effective with him. 3 years of playing exclusively yoshi and only recently i've started to really understand the way you have to play him and what he's capable of. And thats an experience you only get in tekken, such a wonderful game.

    Yeah, d3,4 spam works against bad players, but beyond green ranks, Hwoarang really struggles. You can't just ff+4 and Backlash forever, you really have to put a lot of thought into how you will start momentum, and what tool in your massive arsenal is best right now.
    A predictable Hwoarang is so easy to beat, so you _need_ to be creative and quick on your feet (no pun intended)

    ok srsly zafina and leroy are just two different flavors of p2w. leroy just bulldozes everyone with sheer brute force and zafina does weird shit no one knows without labbing, and most won't lab cause you'd have to pay for her.
    edit. upon reading my comment a second time i realised it sounds very butthurt lol. i doubt the differences in winnings are so great as to warrant very big outrage, which makes me wish tmm would have provided some numbers showing just how great the gaps are, or provided a link to _da data_ at least
    edit again: there it is! the most lopsided match i could find with a quick glance was leroy v devil jim at 60-40. of course the data's not perfect but, i think that's pretty impressive. the most unbalanced matchup according to pure winrates is only a 6-4. then again, the single largest gap between any two character's winrates is between Leroy and number 2, so.

    There's a lot to analyze here. I'm not sure what kinda data is out there, but something like matches and players per character would be really useful metrics. We tend to think of high-level play as being the top 1% of players and mid-level play as probably 75% of the community (people who watch videos/streams or interact with others in some way outside of playing the game), but those high-level players have thousands of matches while beginners might have

      As an Eliza main, I have to agree that winning the first match with her against anyone is easier. Every single match after that one relies on how many special moves I can pull to take them by surprise. Once I run out of flashy moves, it's almost impossible to win.
      Recently had like 7 matches against an Asuka who couldn't do any string whatsoever, and by the 7th match I was already hanging on for dear life trying not to loose the 5th round. From 3/0 to 3/2.

    The problem with Ling is that she is confusing to fight, but she’s also confusing to play. There’s responsibility on the opponent to know how to beat her, but she’s wildly unsafe because her stances have no defense, she can’t really break open turtles effectively, and the Ling player needs to react to situations and choose the one or two tools from her list of a billion that might work. She seems strong on paper, but in practice you really can’t flowchart, you can’t spam anything, and so every single move needs planning and calculated risk. She’s easier execution wise, except maybe for her iWR3, but gameplay wise she’s really complex and tricky to play.

    Master Raven is a very underrated and unique character indeed, but to do very good with her you need to play very risky, because many of her moves end in her back turn where she's very vulnerable, you need to be very versatile and unpredictable with her, I mainly use her because she resemble Naruto characters in her fighting style and because of her unorthodox approach, for me she's B+ and maximum A in the right hands of use in the Tier List, because she's the type of High Risk-High Reward character. ☯️

    Showing this tierlist in a chart with another axis being popularity/pick rate would tell a completely different story. Consider that nobody labs anything. The more popular characters would be "labbed" more because they show up more often and has more bad players. If a character who is always at a disadvantage MU-knowledge wise still always comes out on top, that's the real top tier. Not having matchup knowledge doesn't excuse them, it reinforces why tierlists are a high-level thing.
    A ton of the characters I run into constantly are very low on the list, all the mishimas are low because if you learn to deal with one hellsweep, you can deal with all of them.

  • @AhNoWiC
    @AhNoWiC 3 года назад

    I always think a critical thing that top players fail to account for (but you do!) is that low level play is all about overwhelming your opponent with options they don't know how to counter. Players at low level aren't typically looking to poke out opponents or bait and punish, they just want to get in and hit you. I personally don't play a ton of Tekken, but it seems pretty constant throughout the FGC (and competive games in general) that theres a relatively large disconnect in terms of character perceptions between low level and top level play, since the most successful playstyles at each level are fundamentally different. Rushdown is a hell of a lot better against someone who doesn't know what they can do to punish (or how to even block consistently in T7), and ranged attacks can seem like something impossible to overcome for example. Really, really solid analysis.
