  • Everyone is aging and everyone has choices to make regarding aging. Curiosity, joy, and serendipity awaits--though our culture tells us the opposite. No more panicking when those milestone birthdays that end in zero come around - regardless of whether it’s 30 or 60 that’s making one anxious. Becky invites the audience to see themselves as whole beings composed of three parts - body, mind, and spirit. Through personal stories and scientific research, she explores the opportunities that a long view of life can hold. Viewers will have a new appreciation of the vibrancy provided by those living in the post-60 space, as well as a personal realization that there is no expiration date on living a life of health, impact, and wonder.
Becky is an author, retired geriatric nurse, community volunteer, and is passionate about changing the culture of aging. She received her nursing degree at Augustana University and her graduate degree at South Dakota State University. She is constantly curious about the human condition and always asking, how do we live well together in body, mind, and spirit? This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I often say ageing is a privilege not granted to all.

Someone said to me recently that they hated getting. They genuinely seemed confused when I pointed out that getting old was better than the alternative.

You must be always be looking forward - when you start living in the past you are not open to new experiences which are key to staying young

I honestly love the idea of being an old lady. Being able to relax, be the neighborhood grandma, always have a full cookie jar, and be wise enough to know what is really important in life sounds like a dream.

Totally! I have an old neighbour that is very talkative and sometimes I look at her as she tells stories about her children and grandchildren and hope that maybe Divinity will grant me the wish of reaching her age with a family of my own. 🙂

My mom was 28 when she died back in 2009. She talked about growing old all the time when I was a kid. And now she never will. It’s so not fair.

Today's my birthday. I'm 85. I thought that was pretty good, but I can be talked into 100. Lol. I eat a plant based diet, and think it has a lot to do with being vital.

loneliness is not a thing, they tell us we're lonely from every soapbox they can find - I never even think about about it, unless someone asks "are you lonely" and then I think "am I" - I think of all the people I've lost, and then I do feel lonely, but, 5 minutes later, and I'm already enjoying my self with something else - something I couldn't do, if I had to go out and hang out with other ppl
