I can't help but feel that stopping to eat sandwiches while transporting your processed, thus aroma-packed quarry, when only a mile from shore, knowing bears are in the area, is in incredibly reckless decision. Could they not have had their sandwiches once they and their quarry were safely aboard the boat?

Yeh, that struck me as really stupid to the point of being clueless. Those 2 guys basically created the ingredients for the perfect storm bear attack, then sat casually in the middle to picnic.

Good episode! I doubt deboneing the meat and putting it in sealed containers would have helped. The amount of blood that you get on your clothes and boots is unavoidable. But eating on the way back takes too much time. Curling in a ball to let a bear chew on me ain't happening. Glad the injured guy made it.

When I was young, I'm 74, I hunted Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. Knowing there were Grizzly Bears in the area, we were always at a heightened level of awareness. All of us had large caliber handguns, I carried either a Winchester Model 70,.338 Win Mag or a Marlin 1895 Classic, 45-70. We always butchered in the field and packed the meat out, while at least one person stood guard. We say bears, but never had an encounter. The only bear encounter I had was in Michigan with a black bear, who stalked me in archery season. I could smell his breath and hear him popping his jaws! I made it to the RTV and left the area. Bears of any flavor command respect.

Hi pal great story... Seasoned hunters lack of awareness and it seems they forgot where they were. So many mistakes. I've heard about mom bears staying with there cubs for a long time and this behavior happens almost always with Kodiaks. They were on a small island with giant bears, they couldn't wait to eat a sandwich? Especially dragging a fresh killed dear. Just makes no sense to me. These 2 were very lucky they didn't become lunch cause those bears would've eaten both men

Most animals have a "dinner bell" instinct that refines itself with experience. Golden eagles and Rough Legged hawks anywhere near prairie dog towns knew rifle shots meant fresh meat. Even our two best cats on the farm would get up and follow me if they saw me carrying a long gun out of the house.

I carry a canister of bear spray and a stainless TAURUS .44 magnum. But firearms are not permitted in Yosemite so while backpacking there I could only carry bear spray. The scariest was when a woman in our party was around a bend 50 yards ahead of me. I heard her call my name and I ran up to see a large black bear boar on his hind legs. I yelled loudly and waved my arms above my head. He dropped down and ran away up a very steep gorge wall so fast I was amazed. Bears are FAST!

A really aggressive back bear that would stand up to a grizzly wouldn't live to reproduce his aggressive genes. That's why we can tolerate a lot denser black bear population than grizzlies and why reintroducing them into populated areas is irresponsible.

I don’t doubt the bears would have caught up to the men even without stopping to eat. Had the men quartered the deer and had sealed bags for the meat the bears would have stopped at the carcass as the blood would have smelled strongest there. And it would have been easy pickings for them.

The young man killed in his camper by a black bear could have been avoided if those campers were made more solid for their environment 🤔especially the doors and windows😳 however I've scene a small 2 year old black bears at close range tear the door in fact bended in half like a Sardine Can on a 64 Buick and it did it easily🤕 these are powerful animals! and The campers they make are basically compressed paper and they want a fortune for them you might as well be camping in a tent😳 you need a steel door in a steel frame with a drop bar that might keep a bear out 🤔never mind all the luxuries of a camper I'd rather be safe!🤕 maybe a fiberglass body so at least you'll get the longevity out of it for the price they're asking. and wouldn't it be cheaper to make if you got rid of the wood factor completely. it should last more than a few years.

Was the sow a good provider? Seems she found an isolated area to raise the cubs. One that had no boars and plenty of food. Her instincts took care of the rest. Hopefully, Grizzlies hunting in packs is a rare thing.
Would bears have been distracted by carcass if meat was boned and packed out? IMO, doubtfull. It seems like this was a good place for deer hunting and a place frequented by guides and hunters. The bears may have morphed into "dinner bell bears," associating shots with food. Additionally, I recall those deer are smaller, so it seems easier and faster to gut it and hit the trail dragging or carrying it out. Regardless, if they had boned it, they'd have packs full of fresh, bloddy meat putting out scent.
Made it to shore if not stop to eat? At best, they would've been closer to friends. Doubt they would've made it if the bears were on their trail. Bears are too fast and determined once the gut takes over.
Drop into fetal position? The bears would've walked away with full bellies.
Covered in deer blood and guts when 5 bears emerge from the brush. What goes through your mind? If alone; Oh shit! My rifle only has five rounds (excellent arguement for 30+round magazines). With 5 large bears in my face, the first one to move an inch in my direction would get a round in the head. Try to stay calm and rinse/repeat for any of the others. Hopefully, if they saw one drop, they would flee. Save last round for self. No way five hungry bears are gonna leave something smelling like their natural prey alive.

Bears are truly scary. I’ve seen them in the wild, while on 50 mile backpacking/fishing expeditions. If I can, I try to get to the far side of the valley and keep an eye on them. That one particular day they totally disrupted our plans for fishing in that valley, and there was a nice timberline lake there. But better safe than sorry, as these guys found out.

Thank you, I look forward so your videos. I have not encountered a grizzly in the wild. They are such powerful, truly wild natured beast, my experience with black bears seems tame compared to what I hear people tell about grizzly encounters. IMHO, the mistakes the two hunters made would have been unacceptable even in black bear country. The one that stands out the most to me is stopping to eat and BOTH eating at the same time. Why would one not be on guard duty like they did dressing the deer out while the other ate? In a bear's world, once food is identified, the strongest get to eat it. Fresh deer carcass+lunch food+human scent= OMG, SHTF! Also, in order to effectively stop a bear with a gun, one must have extensive training, more than anyone I have ever known would be willing to put into it. NEVER assume you know what you would/could do in a situation you are not very familiar with! Assume you will not do well is much more practical. Have bear spray ready and know how to use before you go in the woods. Be safe all.

I was working in uganik bay when this attacked happened... all i knew was hunter was attacked and flown out.
Everyone i knew who hunted kodiak would drag the animal to an open area or even just down shore from camp. You dont want to be cleaning a deer in the field when the grass is 4-5 feet tall and have 10-20 yards visibility. Drag it out and clean later. Sitka black tail max out at 180lbs thats a monster sitka most you see harvested are not above 100lbs. Hope all healed quickly i want to go out for elk in kodiak one day. If i ever go back to work there

It makes me wonder how humans can have such horrible judgment. We tend to be rather arrogant & this leads to a faulty assessment of brown bear attributes. To sit & have lunch while hauling out the deer carcass was thoughtless & undisciplined. I live in black bear country & own dogs. I am very aware that bears snouts are about 10x better than my dogs. It is a shame the 10 yr. old sow had to die because these hunters weren’t more thoughtful & aware of how bears forage & live. I think the sow did an excellent job raising 4 cubs to adulthood, & that’s probably why she was so healthy weighing 700 lbs. Also her 5 bear hunt team would have been protection from hungry boars. I’m surprised though, that she did not come into estrus.

First & foremost, not only was the Mama Bear protecting her cubs, she was minding her own business along with the deer that got slaughtered. Therefore, who cares what did or would have happened to the hunters....they went into territory that belongs to wild animals, not cowards that can only fight with a gun...hardly a fair fight!

  • @batman-in8xj

I believe that if hunters get the meat from the deer asap, leave the carcass and keep their gear with them at all times, radios on vibrate mode,if possible. Revolvers unsnapped might be ok unless you are running. Do not stop to eat food that Bear can also smell. Perhaps hunt in group of at least 3. The hunters chances of having incident with Bear would greatly diminish.
I spent time on Bear Island off the coast of Juneau,Alaska and had several close calls with no hunting, blood or food although the fact that Bear Island ( Chichakoff Island) has the largest population of Brown Bear in the World should be factored into this equation.

Poor bears, the idiots didn't follow protocol creating this sad scenario, if they did, the carcass, left behind, would have satisfied the bears & there wouldn't have been a blood trail for the bears to follow. These inconsiderate pricks should be fined & jailed !!!!

Well while I have no problems with hunting whatsoever as long as it's for meat and to survive on and I do think more often than not human life over predators does take precedent. I think that as humans with the ability to make rational and clear thoughts and decisions not as animals who only go by there instincts! We should be smart about what we do and how we conduct ourselves! Yet more often than not in bear attack cases it's irresponsible actions on our part that get us in trouble! Not conducting yourself responsible while in bear territory is quite honestly just showing stupidity and our lack of respect for the animals! We go about doing whatever we want thinking we are most important and not considering the wildlife that is most important to the natural balance of things! You were on their island hunting their food and then blatantly ignoring the fact that they are there and acting recklessly by not following hunting protocol when in their territory! I'm not sorry to just call out stupidity! They were hunting the island because the game there doesn't have a lot of room to hide so it's mostly easy pickings compared to a larger area like most hunting grounds! I see the whole thing as tragic honestly and my sympathy goes to the bears more than the men! Those animals wouldn't have had to die if they had just acted smarter and more responsible! If you can't use common sense when hunting period you shouldn't be doing it! You don't deserve a hunting license! And as far as the gentleman with the comment about killing all the bears because his friend was attacked is just plain reckless ignorant behavior!!!!! Back when I was a kid learning about hunting and fishing with my elders if you were caught being stupid and acting recklessly you would have got your ass beat and had your gun smashed up against a tree or your fishing gear tossed in the the deepest end of water so you'd be diving for your gear or limping out of the woods with your busted ass gun!!!!! I don't have any sympathy for someone being a jackass and endangering yourself others or wildlife by feeding your ego!!!!! As for hikers and campers as well keep your ego in check and don't act recklessly either! The woodlands don't belong to you to just act as you please without consequences!!!!! It's the animals habit and land not yours!!!!! Respect it and respect them!!!!! Don't act stupidly!!!!!! To quote Albert Einstein: “Only two things are infinite, The universe and human stupidity, And I'm not so sure about the universe”!!!!!

These men were experienced hunters and knew the terrain. I think they had become complacent and that should be a lesson to anyone that’s out in bear country. They should have got their kill off the island ASAP. Stopping to eat a sandwich was foolish, when carrying meat in bear country then eat on the move if you have to eat. Also keep your radio on. If they needed a rest from carrying the kill then they could have called for help from the boat.

First , they should have boned out the meat and put it in plastic bags in backpacks or something similar .. aSitka deer could have been quartered , packaged and packed out by two… Third , stopping to eat the Sandwich , knowing bears were around was stupid .. I hate that te hunter was injured but having to kill this productive mother bear was sad and preventable. With a guide and without guns on a fishing trip( because the lady on the boat didn’t want to poop in the boat bucket potty) on the NE Admiralty Island, a 4-5 year old Brown Bear a@ 8’ tall appeared from a coolie ( draw) less that 30 yards away we stood our ground, hollered and screamed , the bear laid down and chewed on grass..Samon had been running in a nearby small river for two weeks….

no, these bears did not tag team the victim. yes, they tolerate each other at times but certainly not at one's kill site. the black bear was attracted to the bear spray and found an easy meal. bear spray only works if you get it in the bear's nose and mouth. spraying it on the ground doesn't hurt them. and, so what if you have to buy extra bear spray?!?!?! learn how it feels to spray it, make sure you know how to flip the safety seal off or whatever they have to prevent unintentional spraying. what? it's not worth the extra $ to possibly save your limbs, your face, your skull, your LIFE?!?!?! your poor dog's life? it doesn't seem like a hard decision. these poor folks, mother nature is a real bitch. i'm sorry for what happened to these people and i feel for their loved ones. lets hope their story causes someone else to take all precautions next time they go into bear country. let their demise be a catalyst for others to truly prepare for the "what if". we can't undo things like this, there are no "do-overs" in real life. we all think, "oh, i'll be fine....." hubris, it's going to be our downfall, every time.
