    On our last trip in 2017, we hired a driver from Salisbury to pick us up at Heathrow, drive us to see Winchester Cathedral and the Great Hall, before depositing us at our B&B in Salisbury. Money well spent as it would have been challenging to drive or park in Winchester as an American tourist. We knew after a few hours in Winchester that we should have allowed 2 days there since it’s such a lovely city and the people were so friendly. I want to encourage people to buy an English Heritage Pass, since it gives free admission to so many historic sites across England; we used it for 15 stops from Salisbury up to Northumberland. The sites you’ve visited (cathedral, historic museums, good pubs and lovely walks) are the same kind of sites we enjoyed. Now that my husband has passed, I still want to return on my own. Luckily the great train system, easy access to taxis and lovely people make this manageable for a single traveler. Thanks for this wonderful video!!

      Yes English Heritage pass can be a good thing to get to save money and see many places if you are coming for a couple of weeks. Sounds like your last trip was incredible. Hope you do manage to organise a new trip to bring back memories and make new ones! All the best.

    Brought me to tears... I was living in Petersfield and working at Winchester, a city I've visited before even knowing I was going to work there... It much did impress me the city mill and its crystal clear water... All the beauty to see in a place that makes you feel like living in a tale... All the people I met, very down-to-hearth, lovely a city that takes you more than just a day to see... Right after the city mill on the house of the rising sun, there's plenty to see as well.
    There's also the headquarters for the Council, and more and more. It's really worthy a tour...
    Bless you for this video that brought me to tears...

    • @scallopohare9431
      @scallopohare9431 11 месяцев назад

      @@RubiDoctolero-co5xm I would, but that is based partly on the cathedral, partly on the city archives, and partly on having stayed in a B&B in Sparsholt, with several suppers at a gastropub, The Plow. The cathedral might still have bell-ringing, so, if that's of interest, you could schedule around that.

    I was astonished how many really important historic Buildings etc , that had been protected over the centuries. What a beautiful city, every historians dream of what such a place should look like.
    It puts me to shame, having driven from Somerset on occasions, and left this Gem off my itinerary. In mitigation, there were SO MANY, beautiful historic places of interest, enroute, including Bath and Salisbury, with Canterbury the termination. But next year ? Top of the list.

    I was 14 years old when I took part in a student exchange between my school in Hamburg (Germany) and the Henry Beaufort School in Winchester in 1988. I remember well how beautiful and peaceful Winchester was (and still is of course). The myriad of old timbered houses, ruins, town gates and churches tell the story of this very old historic town. I really enjoyed the time with our exchange partners with whom we all had a lot of fun. We learned a lot from each other. Thx to the Elliot family from SoWo ;)

Very blessed to be a part of such a well loved city with Alfred watching over us. My grandfather ( mother's father ) was from Scarborough. Joined the Army, Kings Royal Rifles. He was stationed at the depot in Winchester. Met my grandmother, who was from Winchester. They married in 1915. Grandfather was a Colour Sergeant with the KRR, at that time, before he was shipped off to war in France. My mother was born at Aldershot. However, before my mother, her two older brothers and grandmother accompanied grandfather with the 60th, KRR, to India, Egypt and Burma, ( until 1941, when the 60th were evacuated down to South Africa. Grandfather a Major, at the time, was Quartermaster. The 60th returned to Egypt for the duration of the war, while the women and children remained in SA. Grandfather died with the rank of Lt. Colonel. My uncle Hugh, Captain with the 7th Gurkhas, paratrooper, remained in Burma. Fought the Japanese in Burma. My father a Staff Sergeant with the NMR, fought and was serverely wounded during the Battle of El Alamein, in Egypt, 1941.), my mother's family lived at Sparkford Road, Winchester for a couple of years, not far from King Alfred's statue and the Cathederal. I visited in 1971, as a 16 year old, loved it. Although born in South Africa, ( conscripted and served in the SA Army ), always considered myself an Englishman.

    Oh, I loved it!!!! In 2019 I had the opportunity to know a little about this city. Unfortunately our time was short and I was astonished by the History of the Winchester Cathedral that most of our time was lost there and we didn't even see everything there!!!! We ran to the Great Hall and suddenly it was time to return to London😪. Hoping I may return to this city and see more about it! And, yes, as a admirer of Jane Austen's works, the cathedral was my first place to visit, but Winchester has many, many beautiful and interesting places to see and I thank you for sharing that knowledge with us and planting a wish for more.😍

      Thank you for the lovely comment and sharing your experience. Yes many people come to see the grave of Jane Austen and miss out on all the other wonderful and historic features. A day really only touches the surface. We had a weekend there, but I am sure we missed many things. A place you can visit time and time again and never get bored!

      @maureenrhysjones4643 Год назад

      You can't compare them! They are both stunning but York is the prettier I felt and kind of feminine, with all its intricate stonework inside and out. What caught my eye too were the tapestry kneeling mats, all made by locals, just gorgeous. I visited York in 2019 but grew up in Winchester. My best friend's dad was a verger there so know Winchester cathedral intimately. It is grander and more of a giant than York. Both have wonderful appeal.

    I lived in Winchester for three years in the early 1970's. I'm glad I got to be there when it was just a quiet town. I worked in an office on the second floor facing the High Street, and one day a circus parade came down the street complete with elephants. Another time on a quiet Sunday, I was at a launderette on a little side street, when all of a sudden, out of the blue, the Royal Gurkha Marching Band appeared in full regalia, playing away. They disappeared around the corner as mysteriously as they came. Winchester was kind of magical in that way. Also, I was mad for the custard tarts they sold at the old bakery next to the Butter Cross. I called it "custard tart fever." The fire station was right next to a pub called "First In Last Out." Whenever the alarm rang, the firemen all spilled out of the pub. That was long ago, so nobody can get in trouble. Our flat was near Tanner Street. We watched an excavation that revealed medieval tanning pits, so that was very satisfying. We could look down from our flat onto a little bit of the Itchen River and watch trout swimming around together with swans and ducks and their babies. Winchester was like a dream.

    It was great to make a return visit but from my armchair. My last actual visit was in 2016 with my husband just under a year before he passed away. We paid a visit to the Rifles Museum, as my maternal grandfather escaped from his home in 1915, at 15 years of age to Join The Kings Royal Rifles. If I remember rightly there was a large model on display at the time, recording the Battle of Waterloo.
