A lot of people don't know that in the 17th & 18th Centuries in England, just socializing or having a Party was a MAJOR undertaking. There were no cars, only Horse & Carriage. It could take either hours or days to travel to other People's residences. Often if a Party were held, everyone attending had to stay overnite, or a few days (thus explains all the Bedrooms). This also explains why these homes are often SO HUGE! If Castle Howard is not the MOST beautiful Stately home- It is right up there in the "Top Ten." Wonderful show. I'm American, but I have genealogy going back to the cousins war. I very much appreciate your enthusiasm and that of those that care for Castle Howard. While I admire the amazing architecture and landscaping, what I really enjoy is learning about the lives of those that called Castle Howard their home. These historic estates that have stood for hundreds of years deserve our care and respect. The caretakers attention to detail is impeccable. Maintaining these important estates really does help keep alive the art of these special craftsman. If I ever get to England, I would want to tour these wonderful places with a guide such as yourself. I look forward to seeing more.

Thank-you for this. I have been fortunate, living in Yorkshire, to know Castle Howard since childhood. My best friend was one of the housekeepers when Simon Howard lived there, and her husband is still one of the team of gardeners. I therefore visit regularly as they live in Coneysthorpe. I was very interested in the stories of the 3 countesses. Especially Isabella and her reciept book. The ingredient in the snail water was in fact hartshorn. It is a kind of ammonium salt which was used in smelling salts but also as a type of baking powder. According to my reasearch it could be also used medicinally for fever, insect bites, stings, stys and snake bites! Apparently snails were used in a syrup for tuberculosis but also the slime could be used to help heal the skin. The receipt also mentions putting the ingredients in a still which would indicate it was then distilled. The combination of ingredients would suggest either a medicine for feverish coughs or a treatment for insect bites and stings. Rosalind is the reason there is no pub in Coneysthorpe the only nearby pub is in Wellburn.
Julie, you answered a question I was thinking about at the beginning. “I can’t believe England (which I think as a pretty small country) still has these castles with acres of land!” You mentioned that many were torn down. It would be a shame if there were none left!

It always cracks me up when ghost hunters or in this case Americans (I am an American as well) get freaked out over ghost stories of old castles or old homes in England. People who live and grew up in castles or really old homes, grew up with these ghosts and it really doesn't phase them at all. I lived and grew up in a haunted house that was only built in the year I was born. But when the door between the dining room and living room would open and close by it self (we had the long shag carpet so it wasn't like it was easy to open) My stepfather would always say "Oh hello Mr Ghostie" and because that was his attitude towards that paranormal event, I took it as being quite normal. Just because you can't see something, doesn't mean it's not there. We can't see the wind, but we can feel it. Same with ghosts, we can't see them most of the time, but we can feel them. I have seen full apparition ghosts and although they startled me at first, I was never afraid of them.

Waugh wrote a passage about Charles Ryder being “ I’ll @ ease like a New Zealander in Rome”. Well here we have an unintentional rebuttal 😂. A New Zealander painting that very same place where fictional Charles Ryder painted. But in Castle Howard. The layers of myth and reality interwoven. Felix Kelly. Wow. What a life.& body of work. Oh how I always look forward to your episodes. I think it would be a beautiful winter tradition to host a festival of Gingerbread at Mapperton . It would be nit only a tradition and magical , but possible a source of income. Conner Prairie in Indiana has a yearly festival and they are very helpful to share how it is done for income. I am trying to get one started in my small town.
Some absolutely beautiful structures here. Its sad in a way that as times have progressed we've lost the ability to produce this level of grandeur without it feeling fabricated and false - its also just not justifiable in the current economy. But its lovely to be able to still enjoy these grand relics -even if just on yt. I enjoyed the masonry in the burnt out section - just seeing the arches and raw stone -the way it patterned around the doorways and the weight and size of the blocks that had come loose from the fire. And that chapel is begging to host some grand wedding ceremonies - its too beautiful to be locked away, and its actually helpful that its non-denomination. Some fancy tents could go up on the lawn outside for the celebrations and you could get really creative with the seating layout for the ceremony inside. Would be another great money spinner. I dont know if its appropriate since its also a mausoleum, but there are plenty of bodies resting peacefully in chapels and cathedrals around the country, so I guess it depends on how the owners feel. Just seems like a pity not to share that stunning dome with everyone. I'd love to see this whole place as an upmarket hotel or b&b type thing -as the host said -it was designed to be shared and originally was always filled with visitors. Not only would it help to fund repairs, but it would be a great way to extend the tradition of hospitality. ❤

@@pedanticradiator I had an inkling that wool would have been a major source of income - from my knowledge of Italian medieval and renaissance history I knew the Florentines in particular imported a lot of English wool but then their workers and artisans processed it -the guild of workers in the wool industry played a big part in Florentine politics and often initiated strikes and rebellions in order to improve their lot.(The Ciompi revolt) Concerning slavery -of course this creates a lot of dissension -everyone profited from slavery -and i mean every culture from the black African tribes who sold the slaves in the first place , to the people of the Middle east where the Arabs were major players in the black slave trade. However certain people go for the low hanging fruit - i e British people and act as if Europeans were the only ones to engage in it - nothing could be further from the truth!

The Duke of Norfolk and the Earl of Carlisle are both members of the Howard family. Though the Duke's brranch use the surname Fitzalan-Howard. The 2 branches split in the late 16th century though there has probably been some intermarrying since. The current Earl of Carlisle does not own Castle Howard as the Carlisle branch estates were split up around 1900

Not sure what you are inferring to, but
REAL, experienced, pragmatic American women do not prefer this life or home. We like the freedom, something small to call our own and admire pretty things from a distance because we know the chains that come with pretty things. No thanks! No envy here. But nothing wrong with admiring and respecting the history of other places that have endured adversities. If you want to hear privileged complainers, then talk to a GEN Z or millennial from any country. Im sure you have that problem where you're from, hence why you made such an odd, broad brushed comment. Lol
I love your series I even watched you on ladies of London but I do hope you realize how you only put on your British accent in front of certain people. It’s a turn off because it’s very different from the way you speak regularly nobody is missing the put on.
