@@williamwilliam5066Yes it is. The oldest continuously inhabited house in Britain is Saltford Manor, dating back to c. 1148. You’re telling us your neighbours‘ family have lived in their house since 920AD?
They used to employ ship builders, not only in England, Scotland, Ireland but also in France to build these castles, chateaus, and mansions roofs. That is why the ceilings in the great halls look like upsidedown ships and if you could see in the attics of the other home it would pretty much be the same only maybe on a smaller scale in some spots. Hello from Kentucky, USA. I have loved this type of history since I was in grade school. I was the nerdy kid who loved to go to the library and read the encyclopedia and any history book I could. I want to thank the Berkeley Family for allowing us to visit and get just a taste of their history. The castle is spectacular. This is something from a little girl’s dreams. This means the world to me!!! I did live in West Virginia and went to part of Shepherd College in Berkeley County. I’m sure this was named after a descendant of the owners of Berkeley Castle. Again thank you for your generosity and gorgeous home!!♥️♥️🏰

The history of England has always fascinated me since my ancestors came from England/Europe. The history of the Berkeley castle is amazing. Love watching these.
King Edward II of England met a grim and controversial end after being deposed in 1327. His reign had been marked by political strife, military failures, and controversial relationships with favourites like Piers Gaveston and the Despensers, which alienated the nobility and led to repeated conflicts. His wife, Isabella of France, and her ally Roger Mortimer led a rebellion against him in 1326, resulting in his abdication in favour of his son, Edward III. Edward was imprisoned at Berkeley Castle, where, according to popular accounts, he was murdered in September 1327. The most infamous version of his death claims he was killed with a red-hot poker inserted into his body, a story likely propagated to scandalise his memory and reflect his supposed vices. However, modern historians debate the veracity of this account. Some evidence suggests he may have been quietly executed or even escaped captivity, with rumours circulating that he lived out his days in exile, possibly in Italy. The true circumstances of Edward II's death remain a mystery, as contemporary accounts are contradictory and influenced by political biases. His fall and demise illustrate the volatile nature of medieval kingship and the personal as well as political challenges that shaped his reign.

People who are interested in history, the Middle Ages, etc. would not be able to lead a normal day-to-day life in England, Scotland, Wales, etc. You would just drive from castle to castle and experience history. Just the stories that the countless paintings of the former rulers show... France is already way ahead with its stories of its castles and the Middle Ages. But England, Scotland, Wales are a little further ahead.
Thank you for a very enjoyable program. I loved seeing all the ancient rooms and especially the Muniment Room, not too many of those in Australia. The interviews with family members were all very interesting and I hope that the innovations to keep the Castle alive are successful.
I recognise so many parts of this castle from historical dramas I have watched such as The white Queen, the white Princess and The Spanish Princess! It’s such a stunning place with such a rich history. Going on my visit list for sure!
If you ever wondered what happened to all those thousands of ships that the Royal Navy retired, once they were past their use on the seas: just look at the construction of historic buildings. The ship breakers were extremely profitable businesses for their owners. The oak and elm used in ship construction would be a valuable resource, durable and hidden away inside homes, farms and a wide variety of structures. Hundreds of years later they're still as strong as ever... If the ants and termites didn't get a foothold.

To be honest I'd build so many gardens everywhere on that estate 😍
George’s excitement and genuine enthusiasm for the history of this place, and the pieces preserved, is delightful! ….A Lifetime spent learning and exploring the Families castle/home - and he still feels that way; I love that! I’d feel the same way; I would be so happy to be able to scamper all-over as a Child, and (as an adult) to help keep the Estate vital and alive - while continuing to learn/grow. That Folly would be so much fun to live in, I love their ideas about how to make it usable as a paying-guests’ hunting-lodge.

Your videos are great. The views of the rooms are awesome. Of course, as an American I'm awed by anything older than 1620! There are only a few things left from the Mayflower. Was it hard to learn to drive on the left side of the road? But I did have an ancestor who lived in Stratford-on-Avon in 1550. Maybe he saw Shakespeare! I love history.
There are so many wonderful features here. Among my favorites are the vaulted ceilings, which are recycled oak from ancient ship hulls. This is a particularly grand castle. I loved the visit with the Lady of the House.
It always impresses me how beautiful the gardens and lawns look on these old estates. Its like the groundskeeper never went home, though everyone else did
The stained glass is awesome and the larger than life oil paintings. 😮 ❤ what an honor to be an heir to that castle. I’d love to work for them in any way 😂😂😂 the garden market idea is so rich! It’d be amazing.

What an historic and inspiring entry. I’m in love with all of it but particularly the tapestry. Just stunning!
God I absolutely adored this documentary! Thank you !
I love hearing the stories of the People who lived there, so special!
Just wonderful, thank you so much. Wow, the responsibility of it would be enormous! 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Mr. Charles Berkeley was an absolutely charming host. What a magnificent castle. I wish I had the means to gain and upkeep such an awesome place! ❤
This place is absolutely magnificent. Thank you for sharing. I put it on my must-go place the next time I visit England 😍
Wow, I am in awe of such a detailed virtual tour of this archeological marvel. Indeed, I am glad RUclips suggested it. This video was a great insight into the lives of such historically influential people. It is a fresh breath of air from the blunder of those RUclips shorts. Commendable, and I hope to watch more of your channel.
Very nice video. Spectacular Castle!
What a beautiful family and a beautiful castle.
Good Explanation ❤❤❤❤
I love it! So much history! What a grand castle! The owner must be so proud! I'm so glad you kept up this castle! So many are left to fall and that's so sad! So thank you!
What a treat, thank you so much. And thank the family of Berkeley Castle as well.
Thank you for taking us on this journey love your videos love the history would love to visit England one day
It always impresses me how beautiful the gardens and lawns look on these old estates. Its like the groundskeeper never went home, though everyone else did
I adore castles.❤
The stained glass is awesome and the larger than life oil paintings. 😮 ❤ what an honor to be an heir to that castle. I’d love to work for them in any way 😂😂😂 the garden market idea is so rich! It’d be amazing.
Sir Maurice de Berkeley who built the castle, is my 26th great grandfather - One of my goals is to be able to visit the castle one day! I wonder how many Berkeleys are in line to inherit the castle before me??? lol
Amazing! Letters from almost a thousand years ago! What a privilege to watch this. Now, I want to visit this castle and see it by myself!
absoluteley breathtaking!!!
Castles are truly amazing. WOW I always wondered what the inside of a Castle looks like... Thank you...👍🇺🇸
Love this video. I hope to see more of these. Daisy B speaks very well, she should perhaps also narrate these. Very naturally beautiful woman. Beautiful even without wearing makeup! So nice to see that nowadays. Both of you actually. I’m very fond of saying how I feel. Especially nice, truthful comments. Thanks again for this wonderful thread. MCP 🐞
