  • Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought and built a wonderful private country retreat called Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. A tranquil country estate for Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their 9 children to escape from London life. Queen Victoria would die in her bedroom on the estate in 1901.
Join us for a walking tour and history of Osborne House taking us on a journey to find out what Queen Victoria enjoyed away from the pomp and pageantry of London.

In the 1970's we went to the Isle of Wight for a week's holiday and visited Osborne House which was pure magic. We also went to Cowes to see the Royal yacht with the Royal Family on board and saw Prince Phillip taking Charles and Anne out in their boat from the Royal Yacht Britannia. the Isle of Wight albeit small was pure magic. This post brings back so many wonderful memories, as my husband and elder son are no longer with us.

This by far the grandest Country Home for the royals I’ve ever seen. It warms my heart to learn that Prince Albert & Queen Victoria had the little house & gardens (for fruit/veg & flowers) built & fully furnished in order for their 9 children learn marketing, gardening, cooking, sewing, etc skills. Prince Albert & Queen Victoria understood the incredible importance of these skills which is remarkable considering the time period. Simon, u did a spectacular job in finding out & sharing the historical aspects &stunning beauty of Osborne House. I could watch this video over & over & not tire of it. Thank u, thank u, thank u! Beautifully done, thank you! This gives a really great picture of what a visit to Osborne is like. I grew up just down the road from Osborne (in much humbler surroundings, of course!). Back then, you could pay to visit the grounds and Swiss Cottage separately, which was cheaper, and made for a lovely walk, especially in summer. One thing I would point out is that it is the Durbar Room, not the Dunbar Room. Durbar was the name for a court or official reception held by an Indian prince. One of my favourite places in the house, along with the corridor of portraits that leads to it.

I was there on the 8th September and I totally agree, it is a magnificent place. You truly feel you have taken a peek into the lives of Victoria and Albert. The beach is so peaceful and the scenery is amazing. I went by hovercraft from Portsmouth to IOW and back. It was on the way back I learnt of the passing of Queen Elizabeth. Thank you for posting this and letting me see it all again. Absolutely beautiful place.

@@MemorySeekers yes I believe it is. It’s a lovely walk from Portsmouth to Southsea, then the hovercraft takes you to Ryde on the IOW. We then took a bus from Ryde station to Osborne. The views en route from the bus are amazing too. So to anyone that doesn’t drive, it’s easy to get to via public transport.
You should try the hovercraft, not cheap, but amazing fun and like you say, the only hovercraft service left and only takes 10 minutes.
In Portsmouth, take a trip up to the Spinnaker Tower too. The views are fabulous. The cafe below does some great food and snacks. We had a fantastic time, in Portsmouth and on the IOW 👍

@@MemorySeekers did you see the ‘trenches’ the children dug in the gardens around the Swiss Cottage? Such cheeky stories that accompanied the games the children use to play there. Just shows that children will be children no matter what privileges or not they are born into. So sweet. Osborne really brings that family to life. Unfortunately the upstairs nursery etc were closed to the public when I was there, so I’m really pleased I saw them in your video. Great work as always Gents. Thank you.
Can I make a suggestion, as someone who doesn’t have a car, could you give suggestions for all the wonderful places you visit, a quick mention of how to get there by public transport? Or nearest train station, bus service etc or if there’s none, let us know? I’ve watched so many of your wonderful videos and dreamed of going to these places and would love to hear how easy, or not, it would be to get to them by public transport. I know I can look it up, but it’s not the same as hearing it first hand from someone who has been there. Thank you again gents.

I've read that there was some criticism of the design and color back when it was built, but to me the Italianate style suits the seaside location. The towers remind me of photos I've seen of the central square in Sienna, Italy. I'm sure the views are terrific. Great choice to start with the gardens and seaside views. That bathing machine! I can just imagine Prince Albert's joy at creating a German-style retreat to provide quality time with his children. I makes me think of the sweet comments from Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice about their "Grannie's Playhouse". So many amazing things, from high art and Prince Albert's modern advances, to Queen Victoria's watercolors and children's toys. The Dunbar Wing is unbelievable! I always appreciate the time you spend editing and narrating these terrific tours. :) P.S. I did get a laugh out of the grand painting of Neptune and the strategic placement of limbs, where fig leaves were not going to work.

The boys are back with another excellently produced touristic overview! Never did get "offshore" to any of the Islands around the British coast in my former traveling days. Certainly easier to enjoy it from a comfortable rocking chair these days.
I'll have to check if there is 1 for the Channel Isles - always would have liked to have visited Gerald Durrell's Zoo on Jersey. A visit to Marwell wasn't a bad substitute though. 🙂
