The new wave synth pop collective Men Without Hats were formed in 1980 by brothers Ivan and Stefan Doroschuk. Ivan was the leader of the group, writing the majority of the songs and providing the lead vocals; Stefan was the guitarist; and other members changed frequently throughout the course of the group's career. They independently released their debut EP, Folk of the '80s, in 1980; it was reissued the following year by Stiff in Britain. During 1982, the band consisted of Ivan, Stefan, another brother Colin Doroschuk (keyboards), along with drummer Allan McCarthy; this is the lineup that recorded Men Without Hats' 1982 debut album, Rhythm of Youth. Taken from their debut, the single "The Safety Dance" became a major hit, peaking on the American charts at number three in 1983. Driven by an insistent three-chord synthesizer riff, the song was one of the biggest synth pop hits of the new wave era. The group wasn't able to exploit its success, however. Folk of the '80s (Part III) stalled at number 127 on the charts in America and made even less of an impact in other parts of the world. Thanks to the minor-hit title track, 1987's Pop Goes the World was a bigger success, yet it didn't recapture the audience their first album had gained. Released two years later, The Adventures of Women & Men Without Hate in the 21st Century failed to chart, as did its follow-up, 1991's Sideways. The two albums' lack of success effectively put an end to Men Without Hats' career. Видеоклипы
I just saw them perform this live! Ivan held up the mic to me at the "oo-wa-hooh" part and I got to go backstage and meet him afterwards! That was a truly incredible concert!
That sounds like a dream come true!
Man I envy you

He seems like a pretty down-to-earth guy.
Wow. old school hardcore synth punk pop. Men Without Hats did more for music than most people know.
Sun was shining back then! Even in my head it was! Problem is I thought it was gonna be shinning like that for my entire life!
These guys had such a great sound.
The guys in the snowman suits make the video. Once the riff gets in your head YOU CANNOT GET IT OUT! Not a bad thing. Discovered these guys when I saw the video on TV in Vancouver B.C. back in the ‘90s and was hooked
It's a Québécois icon : the Bonhomme Carnaval! Kind of our national mascot.
Seen them play yesterday in LA for the first time and now I know why I loved them as a kid, such a great band!
This song WAS PLAYED AT GAY BARS IN The 80’s, for obvious reasons. It got everyone up and dancing and singing along with it. The 80’s had the BEST FUN MELODIC MUSIC !
I miss the 80's, thank you Men Without Hats, great music.
How have I never heard this? Fuck me the 80's is the decade that just keeps on giving :)
+David Murphy Obviously you didn't experience the 60's and 70's.... ;)
+tigerspuds Unfortunately not, I was born in '87!
David Murphy I was born in 64. Call me daddy. lol
+David Murphy It's finite. If you lived forever you'd know this ...
I'm stuck in a repeating time loop where I experience the 80's over and over again except for a brief period every 13 months when I return to what you humans call "present time"
The 80's are untouchable! Music like this will probably never be made again. It's hard to sit down for this one!
My favourite song by this band!
Better than safety dance and that's a pretty good song.
This and The
Safety Dance
I totally forgot about this and Bonhomme in the video! Thanks for the flashback to my childhood!
Men Without Hats never got enough credit for their other music.
When I feel a major depression coming on, this song stops that fucker in its tracks
MTV 100% dropped the ball with these guys. They had *loads* of other good songs besides 'Safety Dance'. Such as this one! This song *should've* been a BIG BIG hit in the 1980s!! If MTV had dropped this song into rotation more, it would've taken off.
It was a hit just not a number 1. He still performs this song till this day. 💯💯💯
This is real pop ,nothing compared with today's garbage
MrPatriotforever2009 here here

acktchyually juice wrld is the best musicla artist in the world
It's called NEW WAVE. This is by the lead singers own admission. There is a clear difference, though many groups from the 80s mixed the pop and New wave sounds together. Having been a teen in the 80s unfortunately most radio stations played a lot more pop than New wave, and punk was basically never played for the most part.
oh my god SHUT UPPPPP
This song is so good! Even better than the Safety Dance. Why this wasn't a hit, I do not know? It's very good follow up to their hit song. Never knew about this one but it's one of my favourite now.
Exactly!
True. It's probably their best song.
It was a hit actually. It is still a very popular song he performs to this day. 💯💯💯
My official Summer 1984 song- and still my favourite MWH song! THe energy is just infectious!
100 percent with you on this comment
My entire life, I've felt the march of time drag me kicking and screaming from the 1980s, and this song completely captures everything I miss about it.
Men Without Hat`s: One of my favorite Music bands of the 80s
What a very good song
This is so awesome.
I love that guy's facial expressions.
So do I!
Saw these guys back in the early 80s at the Ontario Place concert venue. The stage was a revolving stage. Great show !
Ivan and the band played this tune in cranbrook last Saturday. Awesome set and man can that dude dance. He didn’t stand still for a minute and he’s 66.
Love this band. Its not even my time error. I was a 90s child. The 80s had a distinct sound to them . Can't beat that techno sound
I don't care what anyone says this is a banging tune!!!
All to the tune of this very simple melody!
Oo ah ooh!
THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG OF MEN WITHOUTHATS
very underated song!
At the very least your tapping you're finger... at most you're jumping up and down no matter where you are when this song plays... ;) If not, you're dead.
most of their songs are very underrated
It's my favorite song of Men Without Hats. In concert, Ivan said it's his favorite, too.
Not just an underrated song but band. I have always enjoyed Ivan's ability to write and his lyrics are brilliant. " Where do the boys go", my interpretation is how we are all like hamsters on a wheel. He acknowledges that in the song, "all to the tune to this very simple melody".
The 80's ROCKED!!
This song matches the youthful energy I had back in the day. No drugs, just pure adrenaline plus bouts of sugar highs. Fun madness.
Can’t get enough of this song & it’s great video. The clowns (reminiscent of the Autons in Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who stories) smiling incessantly around that big red ball have mesmerized me forever. Many thanks for posting.
This is a fine example of decent 80's pop music!
It's New wave!! By the lead singers own admission. Not pop.
oh yeeaaahhh . wheres the tour. I want to go.
The perfection in keyboard unique vocals rithm etc man without hats rules 80 forever one Big hock from Santiago Chile Marcelo Blum
I am 25 years old and jealous of past generations where the music was still awesome like this!
I'm 18 and I'm the same way. I'm obsessed with the music from the '60s, '70s, and '80s.
Don.t be jealous. Just enjoy the music.
Hey! Start a band. You can still buy the synthesizers they used back then, and I would recommend a electronic drum set. Don't use any modern technology.
Dude, just dance.
@@michaelstefureak9896 yes, you can dance if you want to
Been having this on repeat at work all day long. Definitely a classic
LMFAO @ The Orange Jupep on Montreal's Blvd Decarie as the openning backdrop!! 🤣
Awesome tune, all these years later. IVAN!
This song just makes everything good.
Ivan is such a fucked up genius that people STILL haven't caught up to him. He is still ahead of *our* time. He's the Captain Beefheart of the 80s. No one gets the depth of his body of work.
Ivan is a hell of a good singer, this song is pretty damned good. The arrangement is pretty clever. FYI - this was a BIG hit in Canada but the US record company didn't promote it whatsoever. It was played on MTV a few times but it didn't have the same push as Safety Dance.
The US missed a lot of great little hidden gems like this.
@@MrDbutler69 heck yeah it did, USA music entertainment has gone to complete crap honestly,
I as a Backwoods Tennessean have fallen in love with the hidden gems of music like
Men Without Hats
Cannons
Editors
Dschinghis Khan
Saad Lamjarred
Red Army Choir
Selena Quintinilla ❤️❤️
Etc etc etc
@@TheNumerosopher Have you discovered The Parachute Club? Luba? Jann Arden?
imo this is a banger
This song still go hard
Masterpiece incredible
this is soooo catchy!!
Indeed
Feels like I spend every day walking around in circles... this song makes me happier about it.
Underrated.
How did this song and their album not chart? Why did they career end? 😢
I could dance to this for hours!!!
God, I wish we'd hear this song more on the radio! The only Men Without Hats song the radio stations seem to want to play is Pop Goes the World . . .😖
Wha oh oh!!
Love these guys for 35+ years
Only Men Without Hats could make this song work
The real question here is how you got the handle of obi wan kenobi lol
general kenobi
youre a bold one
Yes!!!👋🏻👍🏻
Love those Synths!🔊💃
It's 12:30am and I can't help getting up and moving around, all to the tune of this very simple melody.
I love this band so much.
Beste band ooit. Prachtige liedjes gemaakt. Holland likes Mannen Zonder Hoeden
You're a man
@@decarabiajo2539 you're a stupid bore.
Vielen Dank für's Hochladen :)
These guys (and gals when added) made for a great live act. Saw them in Santa Barbara when I was stationed there.
MTV really dropped the ball with this one as I think it could have been a hit in America had they actually played the video.
Garrett Johnson Agreed. This song could have been a massive international hit.
I doubt it. The success of Safety Dance was in a perfect timing for them to emerge higher but you have to remember that at the same time they released in 84 this song “where do the boys go”, Steve Perry, WHAM, Scandal, David Bowie, and the British hit Smalltown boy by Bronski beat had already released. Alot of these rarer bands and songs just didnt make it on the radio or in the mainstream at that time
@@Hankbhomeless I was 13 or 14 when this came out and, you're right, this was around the time MTV started losing its bite and focusing on the "safe" bets rather than cutting edge stuff.
I totally agree. It's a shame they are only recognized by Safety Dance.
yes this is way better than safety dance. Even though safety dance is really good
Awesome song...great representation of early '80s synth band tunes, which are still among my favorite. '80s still rule.
The remix is so damn good that it sounds like it was 80s influenced but with a badass electro sound thats current 👌
One of the most mysterious yet scary music videos ever made.
Ahhh, Drunken 80's Thursday, you ever fail to disappoint, thank you Ivan.
such dynamic basses, drumbeats!
the great bumm of MWH! a raw one of their pearls!
By 1988 it was damn near impossible to see this on Much Music- I remember freaking and throwing in a tape to capture it back in Scarberia.
Brothers born in- of all places, Urbana, Illinois. Dad was a PE teacher and coach. And the 2012 War cd hearkens back to this era.
Thank God Ivan gave up rap!
the locks keep winning
Great song from one of the best albums of the 1980s...FOLK OF THE 80s!
Im pretty drunk and this is better than a grilled cheese and sleeping on the couch. Fuck. The 80's were brilliant!!!!
I tried to get drunk in Montreal and i should've ordered beer instead of spirits but oh well! The sights were still lifetime!
Marvellous!
"Sometimes I have to stand on my head to see the cup as half full!"
Bonhommes WITH hats!!!!! REAL music right here boys and girls!!!!
Welcome to 1984.
Forever the sound of the mornings at The Johnson Building....... thank you.... Bless you.
Ivan is amazing and unique, on the stage he is a god yet in interviews he is so humble and friendly, what a fantastic guy!!
Missed out on this absolute banger until a couple of days ago
Me too. Love the 80s
I discovered this song over the summer and I fell in love with it. It sounds awesome in my car, especially when I'm driving to Montréal!
priestpilot nice, my dude!
A1 tune this from a band still sounding as fresh now as they did when I first listened to them 40 years ago. Folk of the 80s you bet but folk of the 2020s also. Keep walking round in circles Ivan - love this
One of my favorites by MWH....saw them last night in Sacramento, CA....Ivan still has it...awesome!!
Ivan is so dreamy 😍
I may be a rock guy first, but damn do I love me some good synth pop.
Where do the boys go? In Quebec City to meet Big Bonhomme of course
I love almost everything Men Without Hats recorded and Ivan that was a sweet solo project.
Wohoa!Hey!!!
Ultimate autobahn music. Crazy speeds need crazy tunes. I know I was there!
that smile at 0:06. ^^
1984 had a string of hits and songs but this one really sticks out.
Than (´82) I was too young to understand this. Later I ´ve felt: that´s something saying good to me. Maybe too late I´ve found that it´s totally beautifull. I´ve bought all CD´s (cca 2005) that I could and I´m happy, that I have this super songs. Thx to all about it :-p
Glad to see this finally surpass 1 million views!
GF: "He's probably cheating right now."
BF:
This has been stuck in my head nonstop for over 2 weeks. That might not be healthy, but I suppose it's neat.
Only two weeks? I've been stuck for over a month now. Singing it in the car commuting to work. By the end of the half hour drive, my voice is a mess, but I'm happy.
Take me to where the boys go!!!
The Bell Centre to watch the Habs play...where else?
"Where Do The Trucks Go"
"Ot-Ta-Wa En-Cir-Cled"
The Character of Le Bohomme De Neige (or most commonly simply "Bonhomme" is the official mascot of Quebec's Winter Carnival. Not sure exactly when MWH adopted him, but he was featured throughout much of their career--even joining the fictionalized version of the band as the drummer in "Pop Goes The World"
Neige white as coke so that fits perfectly for them
wow, these guys had another song?! lol thank god for youtube!
This is so well representing the feeling in the western culture at that time - there was a good mixture of freedom and engagement, a lot of hope, joy, tolerance and a peaceful together 🙏🏻
Ivan....
Run, Tony, run!
What happened to him?
eiffe They kidnapped him.
Never heard this before...now it is stuck in my head.
Old memories. Still have the LP :-)
Takes me back when MTV was all about music!
This has been on RUclips for eleven years. How have I not seen this music video until today? I couldn't get MTV in my area but when I'd visit friends and watched they NEVER played this. My first thought was, "Oh, they had the snowman BEFORE 'Pop Goes The World'!" lol
Woh oh!
