To get the most out of them: - Acoustic treatment (4 high quality 60x120cm rectangular bass traps can do a hell of a lot). - Take them off your desk and put them on stands (I downsized my desk for this) (Make sure the stands aren't hollow and resonant. Also, teeth on the bottom of the stands are good) - ISO Pucks under them for further separation (I'm still yet to compare to my decent foam pads to see if theres a huge difference though).

I was also a Mackie servicer and their monitor speakers were pretty nice too. But as a jazz pianist, I found the HS8 to be incredibly accurate in reproducing VST pianos. The only drawback: once out of warranty they will be expensive to get repaired. If you blow the output ICs, they are hundreds of dollars. The drivers were rather pricey as well. Fortunately they are very reliable. I only worked on the HS8 two times.

Another Yam fam fan here ! Thanks for the video. Without being picky, just to add little more accuracy to the NS10 comparison with HS Series. Those two are basically very different in technical terms, NS10 (except bass ported version NS10MT X,) were fully sealed design, passive monitors, unlike active bi-amped HS series, with bass ports located at the back. If not mistaken they share similar paper domes, with typically "dry" sound signature - I would say the smaller the HS version - the closer to the NS10 sound, but still very different. HS series were full new design based on Yamaha's legendary speaker legacy, (and well marketed connection with NS10), rather than technical redesign to offer new "NS10" sounding monitors. Fully agree about HS8 being phenomenal speaker fot the price (and even twice above), having very nice response, detail and translation. Many people blame the room acoustic defficiencies to the speakers, commenting on them as boomy, or harsh - the fact is, that this 8" inch box needs bit more room space and acoustic treatment, proper speaker isolation and good positioning - including enough space behind the speaker. Once this is out of question, there is probably not many as good monitors as HS8 in the respective price range. Despite wide offer on the market, I preferred Yammies over JBL308, Kali Audio LP8, Adam T8V, and Presonus Eris 8, which for the price I do consider as a good sounding and proffessional product, with all their pros and cons. In my opinion, HS8 sound better in many "studio monitor" aspects in comparison to the mentioned. Enjoy these !!!

If you are on a tight budget, yes you can easily get great two way speakers, but mainly three way/or more speakers will give you hell of a lot bigger/wider stereo field and separation.
Would have been helpful to go through the settings in the back and when to use them. Room control, and high trim. Since you're reviewing the product anyway
The way they are positioned close to the wall gives you much more bass than what you are supposed to hear. I know cause I have the same problem for 4 years...
Certainly does. However i use them at a relatively low volume and never mix anything important on them. Honestly wasn't a great choice for my space. lol
Unfortunatelly, I have to disagree. I bought a pair of HS8 around 3 years ago and every time I listened my mix in other systems, they sounded really different (even after I "calibrated" them with Sonarworks) and sounded like everything was "harsh" and upfront. Which tends to other problem I had: the sound stage never translated that well. The difference between loud and quiet, left and right, or as some of them say, the "3D Stereo Field" was kinda impossible to identify and position the elements in the music. My solution was to buy another pair of monitors (in my case, I got the Kali LP6) and use the HS8 only as a Subwoofer (I made a crazy routing in my interface to make this work). By the way, If there's one thing I LOVED about the HS8 are the bass and the sub. They were really good for me in these low frequencies. To wrap it up, it all depends on your preferences. The kind of sound you like to hear while produce/mix and what you NEED to hear in order to achieve your results.
@@tylerrayhughes I've heard a pair of them in a friend's studio once, but I didn't tried to work with them. So the only thing I know is that they sound good, I don't know if they are good for mixing because of the smiley face curve people say they have. If they sounded good at first impression, maybe the smiley face is true (more highs and lows make the sound appear to sound better). Do you like them? Or have any experience with them? I'm curious to know too
@@tylerrayhughes Hey, I didn't know that HS8 was somewhat inspired by the NS10, if NS10 sound like them (or they aimed to sound close to), I think I wouldn't mix very well on them lol Great video btw, loved the quality and how you argumented you "pov". I'm actually sad for myself to have had a not-so-good experience with the HS8. I have a friend that LOVES everythig about these monitors. I think it is all about preference, as I said previously.
@@raphabmroqueI found the hs8 they only sound good with rock and country but if you play modern Day music that has electronic sounds they leak a lot they are definitely showing its age. I really think they aren’t making any new ones any time soon
Hey,Thanks for the vid. QUESTION! Hpow long have you had your white pair of HS8's? Also, are your yamahas still white like the day you purchased them or did the color start to change?
I’ve had them for about 3 years. Came white, and I haven’t noticed a change I color. They stay inside in a temperature controlled environment. Awesome monitors!
The Adam T8V's heavy compete with the HS8's in fact in some songs they sound almost identical. Currently about £100 more for the HS8's, I think it's all personal preference, some hate the sound of each speaker sets for different reasons and are also loved and praised by others
I'm looking for a pair of studio monitors, but with no option to hear them for myself before buying, I'm left at the mercy of reviews and opinions. My use case is pleasure rather than business. I want a pair of studio monitors as reference speakers for playing guitar through an amp modeler, play around with plugins, amps sims, virtual instruments, and maybe create some songs just for fun. I'm not professionally mixing or mastering anything and just want something that sounds good for my use case. I'm in doubt between Yamaha HS7's/HS8's, Focal Alpha 65's, Dynaudio LYD-5's, Eve Audio SC205's... etc. What would you or anyone else recommend for a set of monitors that sound good if you wanna play with amp modelers and virtual instruments and plugins?
I tried all the combinations and found the HS5 with the HS8 sub is the most accurate.HS8 alone the bass is to muddy.HS5 with the HS8 sub is very punchy and very articulate.
There is an HS8 vs Elac DBR62 Reference speakers direct comparison on YT. They sound almost identicle. Closer than any other comparisons I have heard. I am a big fan of Yamaha audio, and of Andrew Jones. My kind of performance. The prices are a steal compared to other overrated brands. Just my opinion. I love my Elacs with tube/class D amps or all-tube amps. Very natural sound with deep, clear bass, mids, highs. Never harsh.
The HS8 are great. Especially with the HS8S. This subwoofer knocks your socks off. In fact, I have to back it off some because it drives the misses crazy. Lol.
@@bobdimartino6738 Wow! I haven't had that experience yet. I did recently determine that I had a bad XLR cable. This had caused some clarity and volume issues on one side. That's what made me dig deeper. I've since replaced both XLR cables and they sound great. Just a thought. thanks
@@periloustactic it didn't bow but over heated i noticed it sounded like it was canceling out and i could hear a vibration i flipped it over and checked the screws and they weren't even tight so i tightened everything up and it sounded better but i still returned it because there was very little real low end.i owned the s8s and sold them"regreted it before i even sold them they sound real good) but i just noticed they went down to 600 for the pair so i ordered a set last night from GC
I had a pair and did like them but went for something more neutral (German niche boutique product). They do NOT ssound ""absolutely neutral"! They do colour (albeit in a pleasing way) and make things sound bigger (which is a good thing if you have clients around that wouldn't be too excited about brutally honest monitors). Still good speakers, but probably no competition for some much pricier ones. Actually thinking of getting another pair as a "second opinion".
I really wish i would have just gotten something a bit smaller. I never do any mixing so i just need something for playback. These i cant turn up 25% of the way before the bass gets nuts because of my small room.
Your room is not acoustically treated. In fact, it is not treated at all. The distance between the rear bass port and the wall is too small. Reflections are inevitable in a such room. Well, the HS8-s are one of the best choices, if not the best available. Modifications can make them much more open and well rounded. Many who done the limiter removal mod, changed the caps to better audio grade quality ones, reported unbelievable improvement in sound and detail. There are also similar priced alternatives like the Adam T8V. This ones have ribbon tweeters, which in most cases are better and advanced in comparison to dome tweeters. But all is down to individual choice and preference. With the HS8-s, you can not go wrong. Better monitors cost 1000 US$ a piece if you want something that is really advanced and more professional. One thing that also many reported for all studio monitors in regard of 8" speakers is, that by adding an dedicated subwoofer, the lows will get another level. Sure, a no brainer. But the most jump is the gain in the mid frequency range. The 8" bass becomes a mid range driver, and the detail you gain is enormous.
Thanks for pointing out that my room is not treated. I think if i could do it again I would simply choose ik multimedia. Im not doing any professional mixing, just professional playback.
@@tylerrayhughes Even by some minimal treatment, your acoustic properties will get much better. Your main goal is to dampen the bass or low freqency. In order to stop the reflection, isolation mats, acoustic elements, everything helps. In such rooms, front ported monitors are a much better option. It is up to you. Your sound and the definition will gain an enormous detail. Bass traps also makes your bass much punchier and somehow warmer. At the end of the day, no one started out with having everything. One step at a time. But trust me, acoustic treatment is a must. Especially when you have studio monitors. You want them to use as a tool. In a room where reflections are present and audible, no matter what you do, the sound feels muddy and misleading. Especially on higher volumes.
I don’t know about this review. You just state that these speakers are the most accurate without backing it up with any kind of proof, measurements or comparisons. I really like the Yamaha brand and I’m thinking of getting these, but nothing in your review pointed me in either direction.
bruh, i think he forgot to mention, that the ns10s were so well-known, because they were so bad: when you could get a good mix on these, your mix would have sound good anywhere. Kind of the opposite of "get the most accuarte sound" I think.
I had a pair of Yamaha HS - 80. Prefer them way over the current model. Nice to have dip switches. I find that the HS eights are a little bass heavy. I also recommend Kali audio
Not sure if perfect accuracy is what you are looking for in the studio. Most equipment does smear, cross modulate, ring and ... well, generally hide the subtle details; details you might want to be at least notably present even on some sub $200 earbuds or a cheapish BT speaker. On the other hand, producing for clubs it makes accuracy total sense.
I listen to my mixes through 3 different sources after I get my first mix on my Yamahas. I always listen on AirPods, a jbl BT speaker, and also my phone audio! Phone audio may be the most important. I actually created a eq curve that I apply to my Yamahas when I and creating shorts specifically!
@JustPlayitc00l where's pictures of your studio ? Do you even have one ? And no that cheap ass thin foam you randomly stuck on the walls is not good enough 😒
Honestly the NS10 sounds kinda crappy but that's exactly why I love them. If you manage to get your mix right on these it will work everywhere. Haven't really had the chance to listen to the hs8 but I did have the chance to get quite familiar with the neumann kh80 and these things are mad! Sadly bit out of my budget but I loved every second I got to spend with them. Rulerflat is almost not doing them justice!

I agree with you on everything however the HS series all have ports.
yes ported they are.
Good one bro ...what aout the hs8i.....?????
The only difference is it’s comes with installation advantages hence the I
I would imagine the top end is bumped down a notch for near field listening
Do you prefer rokits?
and sounded like everything was "harsh" and upfront - DURING PLAYBACK! Not in other systems. Important to make it clear
I'm curious to know too
@@tylerrayhughes Hey, I didn't know that HS8 was somewhat inspired by the NS10, if NS10 sound like them (or they aimed to sound close to), I think I wouldn't mix very well on them lol
Great video btw, loved the quality and how you argumented you "pov".
@@tylerrayhughes Nice, Thanks for the reply.
The Adam T8V's heavy compete with the HS8's in fact in some songs they sound almost identical. Currently about £100 more for the HS8's, I think it's all personal preference, some hate the sound of each speaker sets for different reasons and are also loved and praised by others
I like the adam stuff!
@@tylerrayhughes i don't
yamaha could get the ns10 Drivers because they made them but couldn't get the Pulp the cones were made from .
You're right they used all the trees up they were made from apparently.
Get the hs7
It's better then tannoy gold 8?
Yes considerably better.
Can we connect it to an iPhone with Bluetooth ?
no
how much power do they use if no music is being played on them?
Because it's annoying having to turn the switch off before going bed
I have my connected to a power distro that shuts of many things 1 with switch.
@@tylerrayhughes cool thanks
4:01? Portless design…? Excuse me?!
please don't hurt me
I tried all the combinations and found the HS5 with the HS8 sub is the most accurate.HS8 alone the bass is to muddy.HS5 with the HS8 sub is very punchy and very articulate.
What crossover settings did you try using? I've just done mine to 80hz/80hz and it's cleared everything up significantly.
Couldn’t you just dip the lows on the back of the monitors? Looking to get a pair during Black Friday
The sound is as good as your ear can hear
There is an HS8 vs Elac DBR62 Reference speakers direct comparison on YT. They sound almost identicle. Closer than any other comparisons I have heard. I am a big fan of Yamaha audio, and of Andrew Jones. My kind of performance. The prices are a steal compared to other overrated brands. Just my opinion. I love my Elacs with tube/class D amps or all-tube amps. Very natural sound with deep, clear bass, mids, highs. Never harsh.
Those look great! Never used them personally but I’ll keep them on my radar.
The HS8 are great. Especially with the HS8S. This subwoofer knocks your socks off. In fact, I have to back it off some because it drives the misses crazy. Lol.
I thought about getting the 8s but opted out. I bet it’s very nice!
They are okay they are outdated rock and country sounds good but others don’t sound that good you can tell they are aging
ive had the sub and it sucked real bad actually smelled it burning up and then returned it
@@bobdimartino6738 Wow!
They are good for creating not the Best by a Long Shot... I just Setup the New ADAM AUDIO A7Vs 👌🏽 still need to burn them in .
Imho, the HS 7 does sound much more like the NS10
I paid $500 for used pair of HS8, perfect state used by other producer for 3 years.
Just a collection of thoughts, not a review.
bruh, i think he forgot to mention, that the ns10s were so well-known, because they were so bad: when you could get a good mix on these, your mix would have sound good anywhere. Kind of the opposite of "get the most accuarte sound" I think.
looking forward to your video about it!
I had a pair of Yamaha HS - 80. Prefer them way over the current model. Nice to have dip switches. I find that the HS eights are a little bass heavy. I also recommend Kali audio
Nice note. I wish i would have gotten something completely different after all.
@@tylerrayhughes Very good practice. Especially the part where you mix with your audience in mind.
HS8 have almost no low end, impossible to hear, not much for detail compared to higher end speakers, these are entry level speakers
Well you could argue that the Sony MDR 7506 are entry level as well. But guess what? Both these monitors and those Sony headphones are used everywhere

That’s awesome. My only experience with ns10s are from what dad was working on when I was growing up. Just can’t get the picture of them out of my head. I’ll definitely check out the kh80!
@@tylerrayhughes the 10s are truly iconic, no doubt!
The real question is....white or black! The white looks fantastic, but the black would blend in to the background.
I bought the desk white first so white it was! I have black at the church!
@@tylerrayhughes Looks great. I'm looking to pick these or Dynaudio BM5s/Kali IN-8s. I got Focal Evo 65s and there is a distinct distortion/crackling with certain solo piano chords/runs in the lower register. The crackling will not go away, regardless of cables, positioning, etc.
It's unfortunate, because otherwise they sound great.
@@tylerrayhughes I appreciate the reply!
It’s funny when RUclipsrs play music through speakers to imply we can tell whether the speakers are good or not. Btw these speakers are more than 8 years old.
Haha! Way to miss the disclaimer before that section.
Well, I guess go and tell that to many many many successul producers/engineers making great music & top notch sound on Yammies HS8. So if you know something those guys do not, it would be nice to share it with the world, or kindly move on. Saying HS8 sucks, without any reasoning, most probably without any experience with these, or providing any alternative to the monitor, where your real life experience actually brings any kind of insight, or anything useful in that regard - in sum gives your opinion zero validity. Now would that accidentally correlate with your experience and credits in general, not a surprise !
Who said hs8 sucks?
Not you : )

Yamaha has not been "the pinnacle of sound-reproducing studio monitors." They made a shitty-sounding home stereo speaker that, by accident, and due to its imperfections, just happened to be good as a mixing reference.
