I had a pair of hs5 in the past. Lacking bass but so revealing and clean. So beside having less bass extension would you say they are similar in how they sound? The hs5 were paired with a 10 inches sub so it was a good match
their are a nice match with a subwoofer and with a well acoustically treated room they have very tight and punchy bass and the sub add the bass extension that is missing its a nice pairing.@@hellofx
I visited the Yamaha offices in Nagoya Japan and was just blown away: the showroom was filled with all kinds of instruments from saxophones to guitars, PAs and speakers - and everything they make is so high quality and not too expensive. Truly the samurai spirit channeled into high quality gear. Plus; the staff just threw a spontaneous jazz concert in the middle of the day 😂
do you think I would need to add a woofer to the hs4/3s in a small room 10 feet long and 15 feet wide or not? and how does the low end feel while listening to music?
thank you so much for the info, I'm trying to learn how to mix, master , make beats for my own music, This is really a big help, seems to be I can go with HS3 or HS4 because of my tight budget.
I am looking for small monitors for use in recording and mixing at home. Yours is one the most intelligent, insightful and useful reviews of these things I’ve come across. Highly useful information, so thank you! I am your new subscriber!
Thanks for the review. I’m torn between these and the new Adam D3V. Two questions for you: Does yamaha have auto standby after 20 min without signal and if so how long does it take to wake up again? Since it’s a class D amp does it have an audible tweeter humming noise when nothing is played? Thnak you.
A nice review, David. Okay, we all have a wishlist, but Yamaha stuff is very good, and especially at a price point that most people can stretch to. I have some HS7 monitors and the overall representation is reliable and clear, so it doesn't surprise me that even these little things deliver. Good news for someone trying to get off the ground!
If you have a pair of HS7/8, the HS3 is a great second pair of reference of monitor for a limited frequency and more revealing listen. Mixing volume level on the HS3 is great too.
Great review again Dave! Comparison with the JBL's you usually have? I know you don't really mix with those but let's say you were forced to, which one would you pick between these two?
Excluding various factors in the specifications, which product makes the loudest sound between the older eris3.5 and hs4? There is a saying that hs4, which is twice as expensive, has a quieter sound than eris3.5. Even though I have set all the knobs, including the Windows master volume, in the same direction.
There is a 313cm x 250cm room in my house that I plan to turn into a music studio. The goal is to deal with classical piano music or chamber music. Will this pair of speakers fit the size of my space?
Got them today and not sure if got bad ones or dont know how to set them up... I have to turn the volume knob at least to 50% and turn the volume 100% on my PC to get them to sound loud as opposed to my Logitech PC speakers that are loud turning the knob 50% and 20% on PC. It gets worse wen I use them with my interface, I have to turn the volume knob 100% and set the monitor output on the DAW at least 12dB+... First time using monitors, not sure what am I doing wrong... I'm using standard 1/4 mono cables when using on the interface.
I'm planning to upgrade my speaker from my Logitech Z120 to a studio monitor. but i'm on tight budget, would this HS3 be a wise step in terms of mixing purpose? I'm new in music production, also I'm using 3m x 3m bedroom untreated.
Great review! Would you say the HS8 are superior to the HS3 in any setup roomsize? I have the 8s and thinking of switching to the 3s because of lack of space. If im to use the 8s I have to put them in uneven distance and really bad position, not hitting the sweet spot. With the 3s I have enough deskspace to do so. Do you think its a bad swap? And besides, I mainly mix on 4 different headsets and swap to monitors to avoid ear fatigue.
99% of the times, yes. In your case it sounds like you're in a really bad spot and you might benefit from going smaller, but I wouldn't go below 5" unless you can add a sub to the H3
I have the HS5, they are okayish for the money but I feel they are lacking low-end. They definitely need a sub-woofer with them. My room is too small for decent acoustic treatment so mixing on headphones is my best shot to dial in the low-end. To be honest I would recommend the Yamaha’s if you are on a budget, I would buy them again but would go for the HS8 for the low-end without needing a sub. Also I definitely want to try the ARC Studio with them, curious how much they improve with it. Also important to mention with these speakers is that they have a back firing bass port which makes placement close to a wall problematic to say at least.
@@MuzdokOfficial If I ever change to a bigger room I would like to go that route but my room is 2x3 m2 and I can’t get my speakers to translate well. So for now I’ll stick with headphones to keep the room out of the equation.
thanks man! those look great. I'll be skipping Sweetwater -- they seem more interested in sending RUclipsrs free gear than taking care of their customers
No problem, Sweetwater tho is the absolute best customer service in US, like bar none. But whatever works for you. Also I don't exactly need 3" speakers myself lol
@@mixbustv I'm an HS8 user and sadly the room I operate in makes them just about useless! Not sure the 3's would help. I boycotted Sweetwater over service issues and will never use them again.
How are they compared to the Eris 3.5? My current pair I bought last year was an open box....left speaker seems more dominate than the right speaker I thought it was teh DAC that's connected to but when I connected my headphones out put is fine
@@mixbustv They're great speakers but the ones I bought last year we're open box a.k.a ex demos and the right speaker is sounding weaker than the left speaker...I thought It was my DAC but then I put the headphones on, DAC is fine.
You are the cia. I was literally looking for table top pairs and hs3 seemed like the best fit. But what do you think about a sub with these? Dumb idea?
Hello David. Super review and timely for me as I am now retired, downsizing and codifying my huge multi-source collection. My question is, what subwoofer should I acquire to match these for more general use? Please be as specific as you can in context and size. Of course I have subscribed.
Well the 203 have a passive radiator system that will give you a lot more low end and the Eve tweeter is something very special (same as the bigger models too) but of course they're a different price range.
Get the yamaha eve have shit amps.I went with 3 k price range 3 way speakers with side woofers and to be fair you will make better mix with the hs 3 then any fancy speakers.Yamaha speakers are very transparent nothing fancy.
Wow! This CANT be a coincidance! The other day I hit you up about adding. I/O and you had JUST added some yourself. Well I just upgraded my PC (M1 Studio Max) and started looking to upgrade my monitors and I always come back to the HS8's but keep doubting my decision. I realize your showcasing the 3's but I doubt the quality gets worse with their bigger monitors!? Have you tested the 8's?
The HS8 are a superior monitor compared to the HS3 altogether and arguably one of the best choices in that price range with probably Kali 8" winning by an inch but it's all about taste because those two monitors are VERY different. Yet, if you can, I'd at least double your price bracket if they're gonna be your main monitors

HS3 vs Eris 4.5 good for mixing and music production

I've been using a pair of HS80M since 2007 and have had no reason to change, they're great.
