UPDATE: Word from Perp Games is that the developers have now fixed the scoring issues, single player campaign difficulty, and the sound issues we encountered. I haven't tested this for myself yet but obviously these changes will bring up the score significantly if done well. Stay tuned! :D
That is good news. I also see they pushed release back, it is now showing 10/20.
@@Drinks07 According to Perp that release date isn't accurate and Tennis should still be out later today --- I guess we'll see though! :D
@@WithoutParoleyeah, no, it's up for sale; it was on my wishlist so I got a notification. Came straight here to see if you'd had the chance to review it first, as the price is on the high side for what seemed a pretty basic tennis game. I love tennis, truly, but $35? Really?
And now seeing this review, & that it's pretty broken... I hate to say it, but I may need to wait on a sale for this one. It's a shame, I was looking forward to this.
The only thing I want to do now is play tennis and I am enjoying the game ,this game has so much potential.
Hi, I bought the PlayStation VR2 game 4 days ago but there are no players in the online mode, how did you do it?
How to make less money in game dev: 1. Release broken game early so no one will pay full price. 2. Improve game in time for sale price when people will get fixed game. 3. Complain that no one buys game at full price.
That's the Sony psvr2 playbook right there allowing crap like this on the store.
@@krammis76Yeah this hasn't made it out of App Lab yet on the Quest. Sony needs to filter the games better, or at the very least create an "in development" side store like App Lab
It’s not the developers. It’s the investors and publishers. Most times the devs don’t want to release the game until it’s done. Duh ?
@@SticksAandstonesBozo He didn't say it was
So there's no good tennis game on psvr2?
There was so much unexpected comedy in this review 😂 I'd love to see the uncut footage of the gang charging round the court hitting each other!
Thanks Bryan! You just saved me some money. I was planning to get this tomorrow, but I'll wait for a sale (and hopefully, some patches) before getting this one. As always, you give very fair and thorough reviews, thanks!
Well said, came here to say this.
I was hyped for this one. I'll wait some updates before I get it. Thanks for the review Man :)
the deafening silence at 1:53 was hilarious. unfortunate to hear the AI difficulty doesn't actually change. hopefully table tennis VR game won't flop as hard
Hi, I bought the PlayStation VR2 game 4 days ago but there are no players in the online mode, how did you do it?
I had my reservations after watching this, but I will say I did end up purchasing the game yesterday after the gaming studio had a slight delay for its release. I’ve played for a few hours now and honestly it’s really fun and I think they may have already fixed some big issues!
It reminds of of virtua tennis 4 with the PlayStation move, good memories
I'm happy sticking with C-Smash VRS.
I was going to buy this game... Thanks for the great work Bryan 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It's just insane how much potential the PSVR2 actually has but the majority of its small library are games like this.
yep...
Disagree. Most games are average to great. There isn’t a ton of junk for PSVR2. Maybe the games aren’t your cup of tea, but they’re not bad games.
Saying "the majority" of PSVR2 games are like this kills your argument. Yes we had a recent rash of low-res underwhelming launches but but there's maybe 5 or 6 of those and some have already been patched. Most games have been pretty damn good! But I get it, it's easy to focus on the negative - we've all been there
I have to agree I was expecting Sony to deliver more and by no means am I disappointed by what I got. there are a ton of good games but just not what I was expecting. I was expecting much more hybrid games which you could play flat or VR. I was expecting better use of VR itself best example would be another fisherman's tale. the way they used VR was very creative and kept you engaged. VR often needs more than flat game development creatively because you have a virtual space to work with which the player is now actively part of. I was also expecting more new VR games directly from Sony themselves but what we mostly got was PC ports. Always great to discuss negatives we see that's how things improve and get better.
I didn't expect them to explode out of the gate. I haven't touched my PSVR2 in months, but mostly because I have a huge 2d backlog of great games.
I bought the Move controllers early on, and by 2021 I was still getting use out of them(guess I could still be using them today). So I'm not getting too complacent just yet!
Don’t understand why they would release this in this state.
is there a problem with motion sickness? i can‘t play 1minute of pavlov when walking around, i‘m afraid that it will be the same with this one
Man I wish I could help you with that. Motion sickness is different for everyone and I personally never experience it (except for a couple extreme situations). You should be able to overcome your motion sickness but the key is to take it slow and don't push yourself! :D
Thanks for the review. Was actually thinking of getting this one since tennis in vr sounds pretty good but now I'll pass and wait for fixes or a better tennis game to come around.
Appreciate this one Brian! Im looking for more sports ones and glad you gave a warning. Sad to hear there's no variability in single mode
Anyone have an idea how to get the lucky guy trophy on psvr2? Ive tried so many different ways
Hahhahahah the in game voice chat sounds like modern warfare 2 chat lobby where everyone is muffled
Thanks for the review Bryan. I was never buying this one but glad you put out this review to save others from getting it till it's fixed.
Have they made any updates to these issues ?
I know you’re busy but did the online multiplayer get fixed on this, do you know? Cheers mate.
Brian why are ps5 games so low down compared to other vr systems. Is it the capability of the ps5 or is it purely that the market is smaller so profits arnt as high
Wowee! Entertaining and very informative. What a curious fail on the most basic game mechanics. If I made this in DREAMS I wouldn’t publish it (free) in this shape.
Kind of disgusting. Thanks, BP!
Thanks for the review, Bryan!
I wasn’t likely going to get this one anyway, but I’m disappointed for all the people that were looking forward to it. Hopefully the devs can get it where it needs to be.
I’m patiently waiting for that Racket Fury port.
Developers should have this where it needs to be BEFORE it gets released. And sony needs to stop letting rubbish like this get released too.
@@krammis76 I agree, but I also know it's not always down to the developers, sometimes publishers just force unfinished stuff out. I'm hesitant to assume that's what happened here as in general Perp seems to be a good publisher. But that also makes it more surprising that they would put their name on something that released in this state.
But, yeah, would be great if every game could at least function properly upon release. That doesn't seem like a very high bar.
Yep agree. You're right though, i guess it's the publishers more than the developers. But to be really honest sony needs to make sure stuff is at a higher standard before releasing stuff like this. They are allowing too much stuff that needs fixing before it's actually playable. @@wisegy84
Thanks for the review. Disappointed to see the 3.5/10 review as I was hyped about this one. Keeping fingers crossed for an Astro Bot 2 announcement soon…
Any updates on if the patch iimproved this experience? I wanted to get this game, but $35 is a lot if it's a disaster on every level.
A lot of the sounds have been fixed and the difficulty in the single player campaign now scales appropriately. The online stuff is still a mess imo
great channel. the info page at the ends are excellent.
if i were you BP i would re-review this game this ONE TIME because of your & our love of VR games this one time - just because this is the only tennis game and because i think this was a simple mis-understanding on which version was being released to the public. There is no way they could have patched that much in one day. ...it had to be a version error on release date and not that they meant to release it in that state. You can even use the same video, just redo the audio to make it easy and quick. Just this once. hehe up to you tho mr 100k subs :)
They still have a LOT to fix before I'd bother with a re-review. But you're right, there's about 20 games that need the re-review treatment at this point....
Well at least that gives some breathing room for the jam packed October releases. Thanks Brian.
I think I’m done caring about how good a game might get in the future. If a restaurant serves undercooked chicken all the time I don’t care if they get it right months later.
Need to know if the online has been fixed. Was really looking forward to this. Devastated
I saw it on sale so I bought it and tried it.
How is this a 3.5 star game?
It's so great, I think it would be good to review it again.
This game real fun
Yup this is a launch day review, so a few things have been fixed since. Try online --- it's not worth re-reviewing yet...
I enjoy it, but I've yet to see anyone else online, when is prime time?
I dont think there is a prime time for this game, at least not yet. Your best bet is to join our discord and get a game going there --- if you can deal with the jankiness online :D
Thanks Bryan for helping me dodge a bullet buying this sh*tshow. If the issues are addressed with updates I may pick it up in 6 months.
Was a big fan of games like Virtua Tennis and Top Spin back in the PS3 days so expect more.
I just picked up Angry Birds, Synapse, Switchback and Galaxy Karts in the recent sales tho so plenty to keep me busy.
Also hoping the other October releases such as Vertigo 2, Foglands, JTF & Ghostbusters are more polished and worth buying at launch.
Great review as always dude ❤
Wii Tennis was way ahead of its time.
Classic
thanks for saving me time and money.
2:08 Just shows how much the crowd was paying attention.
WII proofed that good sports games are possible even without VR. The PS did not offer anything close to those WII games, especially tennis. On-court looks like a good start to fill this gap. I hope there is more to come. Would be good to have this playable even without VR, similar to the old WII tennis.
I love how you have a recommended purchase price in your review as well. Towards the end of the video I was thinking that I'd get this game when it's about 5 euro's. 35? No way. The mission animations are inexcusable and absolutely terrible of a decision to let it through. Fucking around and watching people do random shit is my favorite thing in these kind of games. I wanna see them spam their racket left and right
I had some hopes for this one.
-
What a bummer, man.
Another anticipated release. Another instance of, "We hear you. Just wait until we release a patch to address all the things that should have been addressed before the release." 🙄
Honestly, I think it's absolutely disgusting to consumers, the amount of terrible/buggy vr games that are being released on Psvr2. Paying the premium for the headset, Sony should be making AAA Titles themselves!
Totally agree- this is why vr is not taking off like it should.
Oh dear.. i got this on the quest a while ago and struggled to enjoy it but thought it was nearly there and when ps5 time came it would be good. Guess not.. Looks like "Dream Match Tennis Vr" is still king on psvr 1. But i dont have psvr 1 anymore LOL
Not worth $35, but gameplay feels good. Animations need to improve and they need to allow a tournament to be saved. I hope they will improve this game with future updates. It has potential to be a great tennis game.
I'm Waiting~Ghostbusters😂😂
The silence after the crowd sound byte ends is provoking a sensation I’ve never felt before. It’s like being in a silent chamber and adds a strange tension and discomfort. $35?!?!?! Yikes
3.5? Sounds like a must have pre order 😅😅😅
Bryan, how do you know the different court types "affect the ball how they should" if you never leave your home? 👀
wow thx
holding my money, thanks Bryan
Time to trade it in for a quest 3
Ouch!
I'm going to struggle with 50 wins online trophy, 3 days in and can't even get into 1 online game
Any news? Someone has bought it after the patch?
Myles livestreamed it yesterday but I haven't had a chance to watch yet. We'll have an update for you on Gamescast tonight! :D
@@WithoutParole this "gamecast" is available on RUclips? Anyway thank you so much for your work. You're the main point in the world for psvr2
Yessir we do a live episode of Gamescast every Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 6pm ET. If you miss the live show it's available to watch afterwards too! :D
@@WithoutParole Very useful thank you!
What a bummer. I was hoping this was going to be good.
Makes you wonder how much testing they did, if any. Very disappointing, but that's why we wait for reviews like this before we spend our cash. Will have to see what difference their patches make, but for now it sounds like a big no-no. Thanks for the review.
What is going on with these shitty arse games on this headset right now..There all a complete low Rez or bug ridden mess...Was looking forward to this game too ...Thanks Brian for the review. Your just saved me a few quid
35 fucking dollars!!! I triple taked 😂
Thanks Bryan for taking another bullet for the team. I'll be steering clear of this one. So disappointing again!!!!😢😢😢
Yikes, thanks for the review. Feel this isn't the best option for tethered VR anyways.
Disappointed, loved First Person Tennis for the Quest 2. Was hoping for a good tennis game for the PSVR2.
Thanks for the Review. I was looking forward to this. But review is telling me I should wait and see if patches sort it
Saved me $35 ❤
Not hearing the other player hit the ball is an inexcusable game flaw.
Im really tired waiting for a good and perfect game! I guess we are stick with only pavlov ❌
Was waiting to see if this would be better than C-Smash, but looks like C-Smash is the way to go, at least for now. Great reveiw as always!!
PSVR 2 need Eleven Table Tennis NOW
@WithoutParole I still can't understand why any developers aren't just doing 3rd person clones in VR, following the formula of games like Top Spin 4, giving the VR player the 3/4 overhead view that is popular in nearly every active sport. Just make it VR, so you see the two figures running back and forth below you, with you controlling one. Why this obsession with first person view? I personally think a game like this sells WAY better as a third person game, using the DS5, than it ever would as a first person game. This would work with nearly ANY sports game. Madden... Soccer... NBA Jams... Etc. Either have the headset show the game from an audience view, a la NBA Jams, or 3/4 overhead "commanding general" view, a la "every football game EVAR".
Is Sony MANDATING first person view to sell the Sense controllers, or something?
Nah no one's mandating anything. I just think you're in a relatively small minority that would want a sports game in VR to be played in third person. Over the years I've gotten hundreds of comments from people saying "Why is this even in VR" when something is DualShock only or in third person. As an *option* to play in third person with a standard controller though - that sounds like a great idea. :D
I changed my gamecat name spooky gamecat.
Presentation looked pretty good what with full stadiums and whatnot. No campaign mode is a big miss for me. At least that is one game I can take off the massive to buy list. Thanks for the review.
#gamecat. I wasn't interested in this title, not a huge Tennis fan anyway. I'd rather play C-Smash tbh, but I don't have that either.
Theyre gonna regret rushing this one out to.. check notes.. not compete with Spider Man 2 one of the most anticipated games of all time.. jesus.. lol
This was one of my most anticipated PS VR2 titles this year, so the disappointment was huge when jumping in. There is a great foundation here with the environments and core gameplay mechanics.... having rallies with the ball feels amazing!
But the weirdness of the crowd, the absence of seeing your opponents movements in multiplayer (and therefore able to get a sense of what they are about to do) and the many other small issues throughout... it's a real shame.
HOWEVER, it is all fixable, so I hope patches are just around the corner.
So I’m in a couple FB psvr2 groups, and apparently the consensus is this is the norm now. Consumer model is predatory referring to the premise of shareholder/CEO's pressuring games to be released in unfinished, buggy, low res states, as we have seen growing evidence of these recent years
*. Where they release
"roadmaps" of all the fixes and dic they will implement over time, as opposed to releasing finished product.
Essentially ppl are “beta testers” whom pay full price for unfinished product. Why is that the business model today as of late?!
It's tiring seeing so many unfinished releases. Are they hoping that revenue the get from an unfinished game release is going to help them finish it or something? I'm genuinely curious why this kind of thing keeps happening. Even the good games like Propogation Paradise Hotel are unfinished. What's the deal?
It's because these are smaller indie companies with limited development budget
It seems to be a problem with gaming across the board these days.
I’ve enjoyed video game tennis since Super Tennis on SNES which has surprising depth on its limited control input.
My favourite however was the massively underrated ‘Grand Slam Tennis’ on Wii. It had the motion controls and a great online community, playing for points for your country.
I wish EA would bring that series and update the excellent Tiger Woods Wii games to VR - They would be incredible.
Thanks for the review, such a disappointment because I was hoping this would be my new Grand Slam. I’ll hold off purchasing but keep an eye on patches and updates. Is C Smash worth getting in the meantime?
Super Tennis is a classic and thankfully still playable online on SNES emulators. The rallies feel so satisfying.
C-Smash is okay but lacks that satisfying thwock of racket/paddle hitting ball that similar games have.
World Tour Tennis on TurboGrafx16! :D
@@WithoutParolenot sure about that one but definitely with you on Virtua Tennis 😅
The only issue I have with tennis vr is serving. I have my cable above me. When i played psvr1 i Caught the cable with significant force
I can't believe they keep releasing PSVR 2 games that aren't ready. 😐
This is very disappointing but im glad to save a few bucks…thank for the honest review
I was looking forward to this :(
Every bad game release is a punch on consumers who spend $450,00 on PSV2, like I did. Maybe most VR games are made from small developers and end up being simple and not too high quality.
450?
Disappointed that online mode is so janky. Guess I'll be sticking to C-Smash VRS for online racket sport with my VR friends. Thanks for the timely review.
I always don't find none in multiplayer mode
@@Fabios__ Same for me for public matchmaking for C-Smash VRS, but I am able to play with my brother or other friends with the same game very reliably.
We been looking forward to Tennis On-Court game to offer similar, so very disappointed.
@@cusman I don't know why there is no one. Maybe few people play on csmash? This kind of games deserve a multiplayer with many players. Otherwise these games are not funny (in my opinion).
Anyway, regarding tennis on court, it seems that they have released a patch.
@@Fabios__ I got Tennis On-Court in the current sale 50% off sale. Game is on version 1.005.000 and seems to be in much better shape than how it was for this review (~5 months ago). My wife, brother, sister and I have started enjoying it as a 4P online tennis game in VR we can play together.
@@Fabios__ I don't know when they released patch, but I did end up getting game a few months back and I have had good time with it with my wife and siblings and even some strangers in Europe. Works pretty good, so must have been patched since the review.
Sound design sounds atrocious too. That you can't hear the opponent hitting the ball, that there are no sounds for things like steps or squeaks from the shoes, and no ambient sounds, is pretty lazy no matter the scope of the project. Specially if you aren't going to have music, which for a tennis game is understandable, at least create a reach ambient sound mix.
And just because an audience in real tennis goes quiet during play it doesn't mean they are absolutely silent.
Mathis game will better on quest 3 with no chord !
This games amazing but nobody is online
This review made me go out and buy a Quest 3. I’m tired of waiting. The back catalog alone with games coming sooner if at all is a huge draw. Was excited for this title and like you said it’s our only option for tennis. I preorder the PSVR2 and waited months for a headset that has gotten little to no support. Also had the controller issue and had to trade back in and exchange then wait. That being said there still isn’t an option for extra hardware. Early adoption faze is over. You can’t even buy an official ps case to keep it stored in let alone second controllers. Sony barely gives a S***. Owning tons of vr1 games that aren’t seeing any love and have up to this point bought almost every vr2 release and now another game that’s not finished and potentially unplayable on PlayStation I’m gonna give Quest a go. See you guys on cross play when psvr2 eventually gets what quest has for months. If you’re thinking about making the switch as well don’t second guess it the Quest 3 gameplay looks amazing, and it’s wireless with the same battery life but can be upgraded with hardware to extend. 👋✌️
Same crap Quest games different headset... only now u get'um straight from the source of the crap on the lesser Quest headset with NO eye-tracking. LoL!! LoLx2
NO Thanks!!!
Behemoth, Arizona2, and Resi4 will be awesome on PSVR2.
@@jioxxvr good morning to you. Thanks for the input here. After writing this review the other day I hastily bit the bullet and ran out that same day and went all in on Quest 3. As reluctant as I am to give Zuckerberg any more of my soul, this thing is pretty sweet.
I got all the accessories. The Elite strap with battery, the charging dock, the facial interface, the active straps, the travel case, a 45w charger…all of it. This was an expensive haul, but man did it feel good.
Sony has been lax this generation as I said. Still find it ridiculous they haven’t figured out how to sell secondary controllers given they are the life of the experience. Shouldn’t you be able to game as long as you’d like considering you’re hardwired in? I guarantee this has something to do with the sense controller launch issues. (When you send them back in they obviously have serial numbers that have paring issues.)
Being able to purchase and use official accessories is a plus, and feels nice building the Quest 3 into a premium experience, albeit at pretty penny, but man does she shine. I’ve gotten the games I was looking for already that have been trickling into the PlayStation store at a snails pace if at all.
You’re right about the wireless experience, it is very much a game changer and something when leading up to PSVR2 was hoping they’d adopt or at least revisit as an option later. Instead we’ve basically been left to our imagination with what could’ve been and a wishlist for device that Sony is too tone deaf to adopt. Hopefully the new CEO will be more forthright and all in for the future of gaming that is VR.
Who would’ve thought a tennis review would push me into Questworld, but man I’m glad it did. Worth it.
Thanks... good review for not buying it 😂
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! :D
EDIT: Just a heads up, the single-player difficulty issue has been fixed since this launch review
If you've made a tennis game where the ball moves this slowly, you need to go back to the drawing board. The Spanish wunderkind who just won Wimbledon can hit groundstrokes at 100mph and many of his peers can too. I do wonder if the devs just didn't want to intimidate casual players with a velocity that was just too challenging to get to grips with until you'd had a lot of practice. As it is this resembles retiree tennis with players who picked up the sport in their sixties. It's unfortunate that the velocity is all but absent(I'd be amazed if you could hit an ace in this game), because the climbing momentum in a good rally against a stubborn opponent is what the sport is all about. Not only does this title have some glaring technical shortcomings on this evidence, it also doesn't appear to have been made by people with a firm grasp of the physics of tennis.
It's a significant disappointment that this comes from Perp Games, who have a solid publishing record overall. At $35 you'd hope there would be a basic level of polish, and from a presentation standpoint it seems that's the case. But that counts for little when the mechanics just aren't there.
Dodged another bullet thanks to your review Bryan. Far too many decent games atm to waste time on this one in this condition
1:48 comedy gold
Looks like anouther Double Faulty VR game for PS VR2. 😢
Hahahahhaha I laughed way too hard at 2:14 that whole clip was hilarious. 😂
I love how long that awkward that bug staredown was 😂 if it was a bit longer it would've felt like something out of family guy
Nothing much else i could say about this game. Sony is making a shit show with the PSVR2 so far, allowing all these shovelware broken games on it
Seems like a prime example of the kind of game that's giving VR a bad reputation...
Why on earth are developers releasing games in an unfinished state like this? And even more so why is sony actually allowing them to be released on the psvr2? It's just getting crazy. Lets just allow any old rubbish and let the developers make the game actually playable in the future. Sony have really screwed VR up on the ps5. Which is a pity because the tech is definitely good enough. But without good developers and games it's useless.
Port quest2,Bad Game,Bad Game for quest2 too
Is there no sound when the opponent hits the ball? It’s way too quiet
Perp games have it listed on amazon yeahhhhh. Lolz at you looking around at the opponent and ball boys and was that Myles or Chalire Brown's teacher😂😂😂
What a joke game development is now. I don’t recall this happening back in the day. It is like the pool of game developers is watered down or something.
As a huge IRL tennis (and Mario Tennis) fan, I am super disappointed. I haven't gotten to play a real tennis game in years, and I thought this would scratch that itch. Will wait for a huge sale. Thanks for the informative review!
I have a tennis game on the quest. First person tennis and that is a really good game. Difficulty spike is there for solo play. Arcade or simulation mode. Good online and the dev organising competitions regular.
Shame this doesn't look as good for gameplay.
Even Dream Match Tennis on PSVR1 was better than this. And that was a really simple flatscreen game that got a VR patch...
Dream Match Tennis really comes to life in multiplayer mode, and it gets most of the tennis fundamentals just right. And crucially your opponent can see you waving your racket around instead of a pre-rendered animation. @@WithoutParole
Dam was hoping this would be a banger.
