How Do Astronauts Eat and Drink in Space?

  • Hello there, curious explorers! Today's topic is an amusing one: Eating and drinking in space. What does an astronaut eat in a day? How do they actually prepare and eat food in microgravity, while food is floating around?
    If you've ever wondered these questions and couldn’t find the answer to what an astronaut's diet looks like, you’ve arrived at the correct place.
    As you might imagine, astronauts don’t always get to eat fresh-out-the-oven kind of food, instead, they usually get their food in the form of a paste, straight from little pouches or tubes. On the other hand, there are exceptional meals if you prefer pizza for dinner.
    “Do they use an oven?” you might also ask, and the answer is yes. One might not be satisfied eating cold food every meal.
    If you'd like to know more about the way astronauts eat and how they survive that way, make sure to watch the video above!

      @@Thebreakdownshow1 That's a good question. I found a article on NASA's website written for an audience of children that reads, "Your body has no difficulty swallowing or digesting food in zero gravity. Although some studies suggest that the amount of time food stays in the gut may be increased during space flight, eating in space is very similar to what occurs on the Earth."
      I also found out that while most of the animals we shoot up there are also okay with it, birds are not. Birds require gravity to swallow.

      Only carbonated drinks like colas that tend to want to come back up due to the CO2 forcing you to belch are an issue.
      All solid food and non-carbonated drinks are OK.

      @@aelolul*safe* is a heavily loaded word in this case.
      like literally any other astronaut, ALL ASTRONAUTS GO THROUGH YEARS AND YEARS OF INTENSE PHYSICAL CONDITIONING TO PREPARE THEIR BODIES FOR ZERO G.
      IF AN AVERAGE HOW WITH NO PHYSICAL SPACE TRAINING WENT INTO SPACE, WORSE SCENARIO, THEY WOULD DIE MOMENTS AFTER LAUNCH BECAUSE OF THE SHEER G FORCES IF THEIR BODY WAS WEAK ENOUGH.
      BEST CASE SCENARIO, THEY WOULD SURVIVE THE LAUNCH, BUT ONCE THEY'RE IN SPACE, BREATHING WOULD BE VERY UNCOMFORTABLE IF NOT PAINFUL, ELEVATED BLOOD PRESSURE, ETC.
      Eating in space for a trained professional, yes, would be relatively safe ONLY FOR THE DURATION OF THEIR MISSION. Longer than that, and even trained professionals may experience organ failure.

    • @AveragePicker
      @AveragePicker 10 месяцев назад +1

      ...Why would it do that? In a gravity environment if you are upside down, you can still swallow. The act of swallowing moves the food.

    • @willoughbykrenzteinburg
      @willoughbykrenzteinburg 8 месяцев назад +3

      Gravity isn't required to swallow food. It isn't falling into your stomach. As someone as pointed out, you can still swallow while upside down. Your entire digestive system works using muscles that move things along the system. It does not rely on gravity.
      Also worth mentioning is that there is still gravity; you're just in free fall when in orbit.
