You mentioned that the gryphon started out in Greek mythology as an eagle-lion hybrid. If you get a chance, you might find it fun to read through scholar Joe Nigg's nonfiction books on the gryphon. He goes into more detail about the different cultures who had their own gryphons before the Greeks, and talks about how the four-cat-legged hawk gryphons from Egypt were the basis for the later Greek and Roman gryphons. Interestingly enough, he also says that gryphons used to be used to decorate the tombs of pharaohs. Eventually, the pharaohs wanted their own faces to appear, so the gryphons (sometimes called heirasphinx) were given the head of the pharaoh they were based on and were just called sphinx. Those, too, traveled to Greece where they show up in Greek mythology like with Oedipus. Combining flying animals with land animals is so common that it's hard to say there was one origin for gryphons. It's fun to imagine the Scythians mining for gold and finding protoceratops bones, but the triceratops-looking dinosaurs obviously weren't everywhere humans came up with their own gryphons. (Minoan gryphons are famously peacock-gryphons, as a fun side trivia. And let's not forget keythongs, ounces, strix, opinici, and all the other fun variants.) Honestly, I think the reason gryphons have become so enduring (I asked for suggestions of gryphon books to read on Twitter and people sent me TWO HUNDRED suggestions of their favorite books) is because combining a bird with a cat is such a human thing to do. It's an evocative image. And while later Greek and Roman mythology preferred the eagle, there are so many possible bird and cat combinations that there's a level of variety. Much the same way "dragon" can mean a number of things, "gryphon" can, too.
Aha! So psyched someone else knew this! I have a gorgeous photo in a book of ancient Egyptian jewelry of Sesostris III depicting him as a griffin with the horus hawk head, khnum ram horns with the solar disk between bull horns on the head. In egypt colors of course. So beautiful. :3
@@cyansloth1763 Oh hey, that's really interesting. You just sent me on a deep dive into Sesostris III! I like how he had all that jewelry made of him transforming into a gryphon to defeat his enemies, which he used to woo his wives. I had no idea gryphon shapeshifter paranormal romance novels had their roots in 1870BC Egyptian history.
Hippogryphs are a really interesting case. While many cultures had gryphon myths and legends so there was always a curiosity if they were real or not, hippogryphs were the creation of the poet Virgil. Gryphons traditionally hate horses-many early gryphon legends talk of the Arimespians (sp?) who tried to steal gryphon gold and failed until they tamed horses, so gryphons would kill any horse they found. When Virgil needed an image in his poems that represented impossible love, he took two animals whose hatred was the stuff of myth and legend and combined them to create the hippogryph. So instead of being based in mythology or culture, the hippogryph was a poetic invention.
2:20 the gryphon appears to be used more now than ever, and that is due to passionate people like myself who dedicate our lives to spread awareness of this fantastic mythical creature. Believe it! I will make gryphons great again! 😀 insert gryphon emoji here
The first piece of modern media that I think of when griffins come up is Dragon Age. While having thought to have died out in the past (though there is apparently a cache of preserved eggs that were found in one of the tie-in novels), they are the heraldic symbol of the Grey Wardens, partly because their past use was as a steed for the Wardens, as having a steed capable of flight was very useful in fighting the Archdemon (a Blighted Dragon that would lead the Darkspawn, believed to be ancient dragon gods).
Could you do more Egyptian mythos on the Egyptian gods and Persian mythos and more celtic mythos sorry a lot to ask you are best mythology channel and I want to be a mythologist!
...sure do like ur videos, methinks its that backckgriund music that lends an aspect of the subject. The only thing imma sure of id I really do like the videos and presentation thereof.
Can a creature that is a coalescence of bird and dog [similar to Silverbolt from Beast Wars] be considered a griffin? If not, then what would they be called?
In the Dune saga, House Harkonnen use the griffin as their emblem and it was sort of like a bastardization of the Eagle, which was the emblem of House Atreides.
Fun fact: Goldar from Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers is actually based on a griffin. In fact, his Super Sentai counterpart in Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger is called Grifforzer.
I see something look like phonex in my dreams many times , I don't see any bird like him even in these videos I am trying to found what is it , it's like stars color and I am start to think maybe people they saw these creators in their dreams
Im sorry first mentions of a Griffin was in America in fact California that was later used in greek mythology. You should look into the history of Queen Califa.
If you lock the eagle in the cage with the lion or fox it will mate. The time in which it happens is up to them one female one male of one or the other
Gryphon gry phon Greece and Phoenicians Did the Greeks wipe them out or did they merge with them? Greeks had Zeus's Eagle- they used the symbol on their coins. Phoenicians had the lion - depicted regularly on their art (what's left of it 🧐) Astronomically speaking this symbol may have morphed from a different bird. Leo is slightly above the equinox and corvus is slightly below it. It may have begun as a celestial position. Aquila (eagle) is too far from Leo (lion) I'll look into it a bit!
Could you do a hippogriff? Or have you already and it just isn’t showing up on search? I am doing my project on hippogriff cause it is my favorite, though griffin is my second fav.

The same goes for the phoenix. Stories about it appeared in multiple countries that were geologically separated by not a small distance.

If only these creatures existed, that would be awesome :)
Pavo Blooc they’d be extinct really quickly tbh
Depending on where they would be located. Could be unreachable by most of humankind.
{ Amoose } + How's that?
Nope, it would be extinct or on the brink of extinction.
It does exist
what about Hippogriff??
