Honestly, you'd be surprised at just how many things around the world are influenced/inspired by Greek Mythology. That's how deep it's impact has had on the world in general. Hell, even a shoe brand (Nike) is named after the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, daughter of Styx.

Wow I’m a big fan of Greek Mythology. After this video I’m going to research what anthropology means. I rather learn than someone tell me about it. I don’t feel weird anymore about being in love with Greek mythology. I see I’m not alone. I watch every movie I can find that has anything to do with the Greek mythology even if the movie only has 1 God in it I will watch it like a child at Disney world. Not much people my color are into things like this so I’m considered weird but these comments make me feel normal.
Then you know the story of Pandora is commonly related as in this video, but that it was Prometheus who took the lid off of Pandoras Jar and let loose all the horror, except for Hope. Gee whiz, I wonder why it was changed and distorted into Pandora as the bad one...HMMM! LOL Read Murrays Manual of Mythology from 1906 for more hidden truth of this ilk.

I actually cried at the end of the video about the 12 Labours of Heracles when he smiled as mortality finally eased his pain. The music made the story telling even more emotional. You really have a unique ability to bring these stories to life. Great job!

For people who truly never learned about Greek Mythology and this is their first introduction to it - this video has a lot of information but many myths havs various versions, which were not mentioned here. Obviously, if you mention all of them, the mythology grows more and more complicated but many events can be viewed diffrently, depening on the interpretations. While this video is certianly a good starting point for general knowledge, I would still look for other version to have more perspective. The complications of the mythologies and the conflicting retellings are all part of the fun ;)
@@jasonkline3445 there is no one easy way - I personally read Mythology by Parandowski when I was younger but I don't think it has any translation into English. There are some sources out there but if you want something free then even Wikipedia can give you a shortcut to different versions of myths. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is capable of putting EVERYTHING into a video like this, there are just too many variations and such. On RUclips though I would recommend Overly Sarcastic Productions and specifically Red's Classic Summarised and similar series on their channel, she talks about different versions of myths, gods, how said god's certain portrayal came to be etc. So that's also a good place to get more knowledge about the topic
You should do a competitive analysis of Greek vs Roman mythology stories. And why they bifurcated and how their own cultural histories affected the changes in their mythological tales. Pretty remarkable thing to map out and look at, honestly.

@@ericparnell2037 Considering how he had a wife and children, no. However, homoromantic and homosexual relationships are not uncommon in greek myths and ancient greek in general (think of pederasty). Gods like Apollo, Zeus arguably, Hermes, Pan, and Dionysus all have myths in which they fall in love with the same sex. This isn't essentially "gay" though as same-sex relations where thought of differently back then.
Of all the couples being mentioned in this long video, I am very much invested on the love story of Odysseus and Penelope. Both of them deserved the best because of their great love and loyalty to each other.
I named my dog Argos, after Odyssey's dog. He waited 10 years for Odyssey to return and when Odysseus returned he had been neglected and was sleeping in a pile of manure. Odysseus was in disguise as he wanted to see who's loyalty was still tact and even Penelope could not recognise him. Only Argos, his most loyal dog, would be the one to recognise him. And when he did he finally passed away knowing that his master had made it home and his loyalty had been fulfilled. Probably the saddest and most humanly recognisable moment of the story. The fact that the story is older than history has written yet we still have that strong understanding of a dog's love and loyalty moved me enough to give my boy the great name Argos, the loyal.

It's only because gods/goddesses can't hurt other gods, that's why I believe Athena did what she did to Medusa, instead of going after her husband for looking at medusa, making her the monster Medusa is(I could be wrong about which goddess did it, but it's the same reasoning)

This is by far the best video on Greek mythology I've seen. I didn't want it to stop. The work you did to put everything in chronological order in the best way you could is amazing. So I took 5 key things from this epic and easily understood self study video of The ENTIRE Story of Greek Mythology Explained 1. the humans were flees 2. the gods are children 3. the children were heroes 4. the "hero's" in MOST cases were the original villains 5. and the villains weren't really ever villeins at all. They were just cursed, tricked, or forced by literal disaster level circumstances lol AMAZING VID with my adhd I had to stop and take a couple breaks over the course of weeks haha but it truly truly was so easy to sift back and fourth through!

@@devroom8904 You are watching it too much from a psychological point of view, narratively speaking Athena couldn't just, as being the goddess of wisdom, let Medusa go without consequences, even tho it was Poseidon's fault. Also there were gods who didn't really actively hurt others like Hermes, Demetra, Hades, Hestia and, if we think about it, even Ares.
@@mariano8910 A psychological consideration of the events should be duly noted. Keep in mind that the Greeks considered these folk 'gods' for a long time, with a Roman version of each story as well. More often than not, this was used by man to justify moral shortcomings: "Sure, I committed incest, but didn't Zeus do the same thing?" Not that the point you're making is untrue, as we should consider it narratively as well, but this was far more interactive back then, and these gods were objects of man's veneration

While I don’t believe the folklore, I do believe in a spiritual side of life in which these spirits are manifest (not “on Olympus,” but they ran the Greek nation, per Deut. 32:8-9.) The gods here are reflections of the hearts of the Greeks at the time, for one will only reflect the character of their subjector.

You’ll love the stories as told and read aloud by Stephen Fry. They’re on Audible. His ability to brought each character to life as well as teach the connections to words and ideas and places that we are familiar with today. It’s excellent.
@@midnightkarasu There are parallel stories in most ancient cultures. Human experience, religion included, has common threads. Christianity is not the oldest religion and more modern religious leaders drew from whatever it took to teach and/or control the people before them. Look up religious syncretism. You’re not being clever. Look into comparative religion studies. Look into comparative mythology studies. Look into the history of Christianity from its inception. Not from subjective sources, but from the facts and events in history courses and materials.
I always thought Oedipus was just a Greek mythological character that was in love with his mother. This video paints a much more detailed picture. I guess for most of us Greek mythology has always been greatly simplified. Amazing video!

I was obsessed with Greek mythology in school and would read about it all the time but after a while of being out of school I haven't had any access to as many books about it so this is so cool to just recap everything I learned and learning details I missed as a kid

Always been fascinated with greek mythology as a teenager while learning some of the stories in my English class. Whenever we learned about greek mythology the class was never boring thats for sure. I loved the story about Odeseus in Homer’s the Odyssey amongst others. I learned alot in this documentary and just want to thank you for proving us all with this.
I have always wanted to know about the Greek history, the story timeline, the music, the visuals and the storytelling is so much on point. I literally felt the hype when Jason accepted the King Pelias challenge, and the title "the Argonauts" came with that amazing music playing in back, wow.. Greek Mythology has a unique appreciation for irony, metaphor, and poetic justice that other mythologies and religious stories almost always lack entirely. When reading Homer, it is clear that you are reading the works of a poet. Not a prophet, or a historian. It makes you wonder how the Greeks and Romans might have read these texts. Whether they took them literally, word for word. Or whether they viewed their gods more deistically, and were able to appreciate the works of Homer as works of art - just as we do today - rather than as works of historical or religious significance.

A few weeks ago I decided to start understanding Greek philosophers to apply that to my characters in stories but then realized that a lot of it is based on or a general belief existing around the ideas of the gods. So I looked into this video and I watch parts of it here and there and I have 40 min left. It’s about time!
This is currently my all-time favorite video on RUclips for the past 2 months (since upload). I have watched it numerous times & even a few times to fall asleep to. This was made so incredibly well.
Small nitpick, Hades did not decide punishments in the underworld. This was a Victorian idea. In the actual myths as the Greeks had written them, either another god that mortal offended spoke the punishment (Sisyphus's was deemed by Thanatos, the god of death.) or by Persephone, in actual text she is referred to as 'Dread Persephone', there is some pretty convincing evidence that Hades as a personified deity is far more recent and earlier myths Dread Persephone was the ruler of the dead. Especially as Persephone is not actually a name, its like calling her Lady cause you don't want to say her real name for fear of attracting her attention.

@@Ranchitup69 To be fair, there are several versions of the Greek Mythology. And like you said, they weren't there, we can't know for sure that his is the right one. We can say as well that the video isn't the right source as well. It's just up to the source, honestly. After all, the stories began from the word of mouth and it could be modified or interpreted differently by another person.
How is this version supposed to fit with the fact Persephone was the goddess of spring and worshipped alongside her mother as the important gods to appease to get a good harvest etc? Yes she was also thought of as important to sacrifice to to ensure a blessed passage in to the afterlife but that passage in to not what might happen to you once there. I agree Hades possibly didn't choose the punishment and I know the roles, myths around the gods often changes a lot over time and the place where the Myth comes from but... Also seems odd that Hades could be a later god when he appears, so strongly in the foundation of the gods myth and is 1 of the 3 most powerful.
I just finished watching the entire video in one seat, and all I can say is that it is phenomenal! It's by far the best quality video about Greek mythology that there is (I loved the paintings as well). I can't believe that a work of such high quality and precision is given to us for free. Well done 👏🏻 PS After finishing the video I couldn’t get past the richness and beauty of Greek stories and culture: the relationships of men with gods and nature, the countless struggles often leading to great tragedies and the celebration of beauty and honor. What a rich and astonishing culture and what a magnificent way to look and interpret the cosmos !
While I consider myself to have been fairly knowledgeable about Greek Mythology, I quickly learned I only knew a fraction of the stories and parables referenced in your video. I generally watch and listen to videos and podcasts primarily for entertainment but if I can learned something as well, that is even better - an added bonus. Seeing the length of the video, I initially was skeptical of actually finishing it but I shouldn't have been. The 3 1/2 hours - spread over an evening and late morning - seemed to sail by quickly, like Odysseus being repelled from Ithaca by the winds released from Aeolus' bag. Thank you for taking the time to create and share this summary. I will be forwarding it to several people with a strong encouragement to make time to listen, learn and enjoy. I can't believe this is 3 hours and not everything can still be covered. There is way too many myths and this would go on for hour and hours if everything was said. This is definetly a good starting point to learn more, especially for people just getting into Greek mythology, qnd I recommend researching more into it if you are interested. You do a very good job at presenting the story in chronological accuracy and in an interesting visual way. The family tree aspect was really intriguing to me. As an amusing aside, one thing I have learnt from Greek myths, is that if your life or city depend on some child actually being dead, *DON"T* trust shepherds or anyone else to kill the child. Do it yourself! They never do what they are told and always fail to mention it.
As a non European who knows little about the old European cultures i was watching six part series of the History of Europe. Then this video come into my way. I am listening back and forth to understand the subject. What struck me is that the Griek mythology stil has a big influence in the modern European cultures. Someone has to look little pit around. Honestly, you'd be surprised at just how many things around the world are influenced/inspired by Greek Mythology. That's how deep it's impact has had on the world in general. Hell, even a shoe brand (Nike) is named after the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, daughter of Styx.

I have to say this is the most comprehensive Greek mythology I ever heard, and I have heard hundreds of different variations because I study anthropology and mythology for over 20 years
Wow I’m a big fan of Greek Mythology. After this video I’m going to research what anthropology means. I rather learn than someone tell me about it. I don’t feel weird anymore about being in love with Greek mythology. I see I’m not alone. I watch every movie I can find that has anything to do with the Greek mythology even if the movie only has 1 God in it I will watch it like a child at Disney world. Not much people my color are into things like this so I’m considered weird but these comments make me feel normal.
Then you know the story of Pandora is commonly related as in this video, but that it was Prometheus who took the lid off of Pandoras Jar and let loose all the horror, except for Hope. Gee whiz, I wonder why it was changed and distorted into Pandora as the bad one...HMMM! LOL Read Murrays Manual of Mythology from 1906 for more hidden truth of this ilk.

I dunno if "comprehensive" is the right word here lol, some stories that take hours to tell are condensed into a few minutes. But it is a decent summary.
I have read about most of these gods and their stories but always isolated from each other. Thanks for putting together a video that made sense for me!

I actually cried at the end of the video about the 12 Labours of Heracles when he smiled as mortality finally eased his pain. The music made the story telling even more emotional. You really have a unique ability to bring these stories to life. Great job!

For people who truly never learned about Greek Mythology and this is their first introduction to it - this video has a lot of information but many myths havs various versions, which were not mentioned here. Obviously, if you mention all of them, the mythology grows more and more complicated but many events can be viewed diffrently, depening on the interpretations. While this video is certianly a good starting point for general knowledge, I would still look for other version to have more perspective. The complications of the mythologies and the conflicting retellings are all part of the fun ;)

@@jasonkline3445 there is no one easy way - I personally read Mythology by Parandowski when I was younger but I don't think it has any translation into English. There are some sources out there but if you want something free then even Wikipedia can give you a shortcut to different versions of myths. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is capable of putting EVERYTHING into a video like this, there are just too many variations and such. On RUclips though I would recommend Overly Sarcastic Productions and specifically Red's Classic Summarised and similar series on their channel, she talks about different versions of myths, gods, how said god's certain portrayal came to be etc. So that's also a good place to get more knowledge about the topic
You should do a competitive analysis of Greek vs Roman mythology stories. And why they bifurcated and how their own cultural histories affected the changes in their mythological tales. Pretty remarkable thing to map out and look at, honestly.

@@ericparnell2037 Considering how he had a wife and children, no. However, homoromantic and homosexual relationships are not uncommon in greek myths and ancient greek in general (think of pederasty). Gods like Apollo, Zeus arguably, Hermes, Pan, and Dionysus all have myths in which they fall in love with the same sex. This isn't essentially "gay" though as same-sex relations where thought of differently back then.

Of all the couples being mentioned in this long video, I am very much invested on the love story of Odysseus and Penelope. Both of them deserved the best because of their great love and loyalty to each other.
i do find it a shame tho that even to this day a lot of people still see Achilles and Patroclus as "best friends" and not lovers
I named my dog Argos, after Odyssey's dog. He waited 10 years for Odyssey to return and when Odysseus returned he had been neglected and was sleeping in a pile of manure. Odysseus was in disguise as he wanted to see who's loyalty was still tact and even Penelope could not recognise him. Only Argos, his most loyal dog, would be the one to recognise him. And when he did he finally passed away knowing that his master had made it home and his loyalty had been fulfilled. Probably the saddest and most humanly recognisable moment of the story. The fact that the story is older than history has written yet we still have that strong understanding of a dog's love and loyalty moved me enough to give my boy the great name Argos, the loyal.

I just finished watching the entire video in one seat, and all I can say is that it is phenomenal! It's by far the best quality video about Greek mythology that there is (I loved the paintings as well). I can't believe that a work of such high quality and precision is given to us for free.
There was a mini series in 1997 of the Odyssey, but I totally agree the Iliad or just the content that is Greek Mythology is very amusing.

This is by far the best video on Greek mythology I've seen. I didn't want it to stop. The work you did to put everything in chronological order in the best way you could is amazing. I appreciated the sense of time moving and understanding where all these stories I've had an appreciation for land. Looking forward to more of your content. 1. the humans were flees
2. the gods are children
3. the children were heroes
4. the "hero's" in MOST cases were the original villains
5. and the villains weren't really ever villeins at all. They were just cursed, tricked, or forced by literal disaster level circumstances lol

@@devroom8904 You are watching it too much from a psychological point of view, narratively speaking Athena couldn't just, as being the goddess of wisdom, let Medusa go without consequences, even tho it was Poseidon's fault. Also there were gods who didn't really actively hurt others like Hermes, Demetra, Hades, Hestia and, if we think about it, even Ares.
@@mariano8910 A psychological consideration of the events should be duly noted. Keep in mind that the Greeks considered these folk 'gods' for a long time, with a Roman version of each story as well. More often than not, this was used by man to justify moral shortcomings: "Sure, I committed incest, but didn't Zeus do the same thing?" Not that the point you're making is untrue, as we should consider it narratively as well, but this was far more interactive back then, and these gods were objects of man's veneration

And yes, the greek gods are elevations of greater concepts of the greek world, but that doesn't mean spirituality must be absent by it, you talked about it with the tone of the one who watches the greeks as men who venerated just things they liked when this is not definitely the case: they just thought gods were related in their highness to things they thought were important. And frankly, not everyone believed in the same identical things, gods or rituals in Greece, philosophies speak by themselves.

It’s honestly hard for me to apprehend what you’re saying, so if you’d like to explain it a little better, I’m all ears. I did call them “gods,” and I never pretended they weren’t. While I don’t believe the folklore, I do believe in a spiritual side of life in which these spirits are manifest (not “on Olympus,” but they ran the Greek nation, per Deut. 32:8-9.) The gods here are reflections of the hearts of the Greeks at the time, for one will only reflect the character of their subjector.
This has to be one of the best Greek mythology documentaries I have ever watched. I’m sure someone else already said it but this is the first time I have seen these stories weaved together in chronological order. Everything from the images to the background music was just perfect. You’ll love the stories as told and read aloud by Stephen Fry. They’re on Audible. His ability to brought each character to life as well as teach the connections to words and ideas and places that we are familiar with today.

Human experience, religion included, has common threads.
Christianity is not the oldest religion and more modern religious leaders drew from whatever it took to teach and/or control the people before them.
Look up religious syncretism.
You’re not being clever.

Look into comparative mythology studies.
Look into the history of Christianity from its inception.
Not from subjective sources, but from the facts and events in history courses and materials.

I always thought Oedipus was just a Greek mythological character that was in love with his mother. This video paints a much more detailed picture. I guess for most of us Greek mythology has always been greatly simplified. Amazing video!

I was obsessed with Greek mythology in school and would read about it all the time but after a while of being out of school I haven't had any access to as many books about it so this is so cool to just recap everything I learned and learning details I missed as a kid

@@kangkang1560 fyi it is stated that Greeks welcomed the christian religion when it first arived there, Christianity became the prominent religion throughout the age of the roman and byzantine empire and became even stronger when we were enslaved by the Turks and conservatism is holding it in place atm, despite that fact there are still some dodecatheists (the belief of the 12 Gods) but don't really show it, The orthodox church has huge economic, political and military power unfortunately due to old laws and beliefs so it's not very likely to ever come back

Always been fascinated with greek mythology as a teenager while learning some of the stories in my English class. Whenever we learned about greek mythology the class was never boring thats for sure. I loved the story about Odeseus in Homer’s the Odyssey amongst others. I learned alot in this documentary and just want to thank you for proving us all with this.
I have always wanted to know about the Greek history, the story timeline, the music, the visuals and the storytelling is so much on point. I literally felt the hype when Jason accepted the King Pelias challenge, and the title "the Argonauts" came with that amazing music playing in back, wow.. I even felt emotions in the background and the story of Narcissus and Echo. Kudos to all the efforts that went in making this! Cheers!

Greek Mythology has a unique appreciation for irony, metaphor, and poetic justice that other mythologies and religious stories almost always lack entirely. When reading Homer, it is clear that you are reading the works of a poet. Not a prophet, or a historian. It makes you wonder how the Greeks and Romans might have read these texts. Whether they took them literally, word for word. Or whether they viewed their gods more deistically, and were able to appreciate the works of Homer as works of art - just as we do today - rather than as works of historical or religious significance.

A few weeks ago I decided to start understanding Greek philosophers to apply that to my characters in stories but then realized that a lot of it is based on or a general belief existing around the ideas of the gods. So I looked into this video and I watch parts of it here and there and I have 40 min left. It’s about time!
This is currently my all-time favorite video on RUclips for the past 2 months (since upload). I have watched it numerous times & even a few times to fall asleep to. This was made so incredibly well.
Small nitpick, Hades did not decide punishments in the underworld. This was a Victorian idea. In the actual myths as the Greeks had written them, either another god that mortal offended spoke the punishment (Sisyphus's was deemed by Thanatos, the god of death.) or by Persephone, in actual text she is referred to as 'Dread Persephone', there is some pretty convincing evidence that Hades as a personified deity is far more recent and earlier myths Dread Persephone was the ruler of the dead. Especially as Persephone is not actually a name, its like calling her Lady cause you don't want to say her real name for fear of attracting her attention.

@@Ranchitup69 To be fair, there are several versions of the Greek Mythology. And like you said, they weren't there, we can't know for sure that his is the right one. We can say as well that the video isn't the right source as well. It's just up to the source, honestly. After all, the stories began from the word of mouth and it could be modified or interpreted differently by another person.
How is this version supposed to fit with the fact Persephone was the goddess of spring and worshipped alongside her mother as the important gods to appease to get a good harvest etc? Yes she was also thought of as important to sacrifice to to ensure a blessed passage in to the afterlife but that passage in to not what might happen to you once there. I agree Hades possibly didn't choose the punishment and I know the roles, myths around the gods often changes a lot over time and the place where the Myth comes from but... Also seems odd that Hades could be a later god when he appears, so strongly in the foundation of the gods myth and is 1 of the 3 most powerful.

While I consider myself to have been fairly knowledgeable about Greek Mythology, I quickly learned I only knew a fraction of the stories and parables referenced in your video. I generally watch and listen to videos and podcasts primarily for entertainment but if I can learned something as well, that is even better - an added bonus. Seeing the length of the video, I initially was skeptical of actually finishing it but I shouldn't have been. The 3 1/2 hours - spread over an evening and late morning - seemed to sail by quickly, like Odysseus being repelled from Ithaca by the winds released from Aeolus' bag. Thank you for taking the time to create and share this summary. I will be forwarding it to several people with a strong encouragement to make time to listen, learn and enjoy. I had a 6 hour drive today and I listened to this amongst other things. I loved it!!!!
I can't believe this is 3 hours and not everything can still be covered. There is way too many myths and this would go on for hour and hours if everything was said. This is definetly a good starting point to learn more, especially for people just getting into Greek mythology, qnd I recommend researching more into it if you are interested. It is not uncommon for new religions to adapt stories of older mythologies into their own

As an amusing aside, one thing I have learnt from Greek myths, is that if your life or city depend on some child actually being dead, *DON"T* trust shepherds or anyone else to kill the child. Do it yourself! They never do what they are told and always fail to mention it.
As a non European who knows little about the old European cultures i was watching six part series of the History of Europe. Then this video come into my way. I am listening back and forth to understand the subject. What struck me is that the Griek mythology stil has a big influence in the modern European cultures. Someone has to look little pit around.
