Indonesian Chinese make up just three per cent of the country’s population, but they have played a prominent role in its history. A driving force behind Indonesia’s economic growth, they have also been the target of violent riots and xenophobic sentiment, with many leaving the country where their ancestors have lived for generations. Although they are allowed to express their ethnicity and culture openly again, a resurgence of nationalist sentiments have brought their place in Indonesian society back into question.

"When the economy collapsed, the rich Chinese were blamed and became a target"
Wrong, the poor and middle-class Chinese were targets. The actual rich Chinese fled to Singapore.

Although Vietnam is part of the Sinosphere so that does play a role. It won't if the government can stop those provocative group to make Indonesians become more racist. It is the matter of education. Take this example. Back then, almost parts of Indonesia have a really friendly natives. In fact, they received many influence from China and India. These things won't happen if the natives back then were all racist. If you watched the video again you know that the genocide thing happened only in Jakarta and Medan. And you also know these things started from the colonial government of Netherlands. Government of Indonesia back then was more like at dictatorship rule. And you know, he can always do what he wants. Region outside Java and some parts of Sumatera are ok with Chinese. When the riots happened those regions are completely safe even though naturally, Chinese people do become a bit paranoid about it.

I’m really shocked at how Chinese Indonesians are portrayed on RUclips... It seems like Chinese Indonesians are still discriminated. I’m partly Chinese, I look Chinese, my mom is Chinese Indonesian but we have never gotten one racist comment in our lifetime. Most of my friends are Chinese Indonesians and they walk around Jakarta comfortably. Sure, 1998 was anti-chinese and horrifying, but I think it’s different this time. Me and my friends use the MRT, Bus, Gojek (motorcycle taxi) and we’re treated like all other Indonesians are treated. Maybe in less developed areas racism prevails, but in Jakarta, I don’t think so. Many of my “native” friends and family post “happy chinese new year”. A lot of politicians are Chinese now (Hary Tanoesudibjo, Ignasius Jonan, Grace Natalie, unfortunantely not Ahok), and many celebrities are Chinese Indonesians. Jonathan Christie, a Chinese Indonesian Badminton Champion is a HUGE sensation in Indonesia, and many “native” Indonesians have a crush on him. His face is everywhere. So, I think the media might be exaggerating a bit. Just because a tiny insignificant Indonesian minority is racist, doesn’t mean that racism happens often. And I’m 110% sure that if ONE person is racist to a Chinese Indonesian, TEN people will be there to defend him. Hate this comment all you want, I speak from my personal experience and the experience of hundreds of Chinese Indonesians I know.

Our family name is 'Zhang', but my older cousins have 'Sugianto' as their registered surnames on their birth certificates (they were born in 1997-2000) along with two of my uncles. I had thought "Where did the name Sugianto come from?"
My registered surname is 'Tiu' which is a version of 'Zhang'. And I speculate that is because I am one of the younger generations. I was born in a later time in the 2000s

The historical context you've provided sheds light on the deep-rooted challenges faced by Chinese Indonesians and the traumatic experiences they endured during periods of political turmoil and social unrest. It's heartbreaking to hear about the injustices and discrimination suffered by the community.
For future generations of Chinese Indonesians, it's crucial to acknowledge the reality of the past while also looking towards a better future. Encouraging them to pursue education and opportunities abroad can be framed as a way to ensure their safety, personal growth, and access to a broader range of opportunities. Emphasizing the importance of understanding their heritage and cultural identity while also advocating for their rights and safety in a global context is essential.
Encourage them to be aware of their surroundings, to prioritize their safety, and to seek opportunities that allow them to thrive without fear of discrimination or violence.

But the difference is that in most developed countries like australia, us or canada, the citizens generally tend to act more civilized due to their education level whereas the majority of the indonesians are not really educated/civilized they tend to act aggressively towards other ethnicity and the worst part is that the government is actually supporting them to do this kind of stuff
