I think like India, Indonesia has a lot of potential. However, it has a lot of obstacles to overcome and it must also maintain its democratic institutions which are still pretty young.
I think India's institutions, while young, will likely persevere. The system actually maps well onto their society as states have more often than not caved to the broader society than the reverse in India. So they should broadly keep it.
Honestly I’m fine with Indonesia becoming a power. they don’t threaten any countries like China. And they have good relations with a lot of countries. So honestly good for Indonesia.
If USA is serious abt countering china in indo pacific...they need indonesia...that country is the ultimate balance between usa and china.... atleast indonesia is neutral for now

We passed 1945, 1965, and 1998 without the Balkanization happening. What kind of event would break up Indonesia if the invasion, genocide, or economic crisis didn't work? Sometimes westerners can't accept the concept that together in differences is highly possible to happen.

As an Indonesian, the situation of secession could be happening if things were to go wrong but for now, our sense of Indonesian identity is stronger than regional identity. We usually don't view things in a concrete A or B, whether it's culture, languages, and ethnic backgrounds. Chinese Indonesians will see themselves more as an Indonesian rather than Chinese, ask a Minang/Batak/Ambon/Manado/Bali/etc. person, they will reply they are Indonesian first then their background (ofc if u are a foreigner asking). I personally am kinda fed up with the whole idea that regionalism is still stronger than a nationalist identity because throughout my experience talking with many different people from different backgrounds, they are really friendly and identify themselves as Indonesian. Of course, things will look differently if we talk about religion and Papua issues but overall, Indonesia is more united than ever and will continue to be more and more united in the near future.
Wkwkwk yeah There's also a funny thing we have where basically everybody here *hates* mainland China and the CCP You can get Chinese-Indonesians here going on 10 minute long rants about how China is perverting our country and the world whenever the topic comes out on the news It's hilarious to see 🤣
Because his sources of understanding on nationalism is from european nations perspective which develop national Identity mainly from ethnicity unlike Indonesia which develop its identity throug the suffering under Dutch colonialism and long time trade relarionship. I mean our main slogan is "in differences we are united" which is from Majapahit era writting, as such Indonesian even before colonialism have strong relation between each ethnic groups.

As an Indonesian, I want to explain some correction: 1) 3:49 It's not entirely true about food production is centered among coastline of 3 major Island, especially in Java. Here rice field is way deep into interior of the island. Northern part of Java island is mostly plain with some hills, having a most fertile soil in the country thanks to the volcanism nearby. For the island of Sumatra and Borneo, food production mainly nearby a river since a soil in deep interior isn't really good for planting rice (instead we planting palm oil there) 2) 6:45 By some account is still debated if Majapahit really conquered Nusantara archipelago. Other theory explain if Majapahit mainly used diplomatic power to having control overseas (by having an allies, or vassal states) since they don't even manage to conquered their neighbour in the backyard a.k.a Sundanese (though they manage to conquered Bali with military force) 3) 15:05 Is incorrect to calling inhabitants of Java as "Javanese", they're one of major ethnic mainly living in Central & Eastern Java. There's other major ethics living there need to be considered: Sundanese, Betawi, Maduranese, and other smaller one. Sundanese and Betawi mainly live in Western Java (while Maduranese living in Eastern Java alongside with Javanese) 4) 16:20 Java-centric (by politics and national development) is one of the root that giving rise of separatism here. Usually they're mad due to giving lots of resources to the central goverment but gain only a little. From few separatist movement we managed to solved 2 of them: Free Timor Timur (by giving them Independence as it should be) and GAM/Free Aceh Movement (by giving them more autonomy and all GAM leaders agreed with that in 2005) 5) 16:40 Well honestly that's a real legitimacy of current Indonesian territory: being a successor of Dutch East Indies. Though our education said we're successor of Majapahit Empire as well as their legitimacy (this actually inherited from Budi Utomo's idea about Indonesian nationalism, which actually embrace Javanese imperialism)
While true that other ethnic groups live in Java, the point he's making is that the Javanese are STILL the dominant group in Indonesia. And thus their influence spreads. About 40 percent of the Indonesian population is ethnically Javanese
when he was talking about the difficulties of past coastal civilizations trying to reach deep into island interiors (2:31), i immediately thought: "oh, so it had been only achieved in java so far"
_As In Indonesian, Traveling In Other Part Indonesia Is Like Entering Another Country, Every Vehicle Is Different, The City Look Different, Like Everything Will Almost Look Different._

Very good points, but you seem to have failed to understand Indonesian nationalism, and you put it in a European perspective, where ethnics are the root of nationalism. From your perspective, states like Russia and India won't exist. We can all agree here that the root of Indonesia's problem is corruption and other stuff, not ethnic differences (well maybe not west Papua but you get what I'm trying to say here). No hate to you though you are very good!
@@franknwogu4911 I know I know, but I just said European as an example to explain my point, people will think about Europe first when thought about ethnic nationalism. Np bro.
The emphasis on separatism is far from accurate though. Those flags the video showed bearing the names "Minahasa, Batak, Dayak, Flores" are completely fictional. I'm a Minahasan Christian, AND INDONESIAN, and I've never seen that flag bearing the name of my ethnic group before. The only separatist movement that exists or had existed are the Papua and Maluku ones. The Maluku was already defeated, and there has never been any more uprisings or issues leading to seccession. I think when foreigners (especially Europeans) look at Indonesia at a glance, and see that we have a lot of things to differentiate between ourselves, they tend to think of the worst is to come. But as a matter of fact, the opposite is true. We are proud of our ethnic backgrounds and we are proud Indonesians. We accept, understand, and are proud of our diversity; and the fact that we are able to coexist, cooperate, and even assimilate in tolerance is a God-given grace. We are grateful for it, we are grateful to be born Indonesian
Technically, we get the name because Portuguese explorer thought that they landed in some indian nesos (archipelago) So think of us indonesian as a long lost brother 😂
As a Filipino dude Indonesia is almost everything I wish my country could be (excpet for the 'x' times more islands and and even more vast) but cannot afford to do so due to our own different geographi and historical circumstances to be able to be "that country everybody is chill with": • because they're not directly in between two powerful countries trying to use their country as a base to influnce/ manipulate/ or just plain strangle the hell out of the other country; • not living in a very high-maintenance geographic location were food production is always getting limited by typhoons no matter how fertile the soil is, infrastructure getting "reset buttoned" by earthquakes as much as in the Philippines; • the colonizers not generally shoving their faith and their lifestyle to the locals' face so they get to keep their own original culture and not antagonize eachother (Mindanao); • and can live normally being themselves and not constantly & toxically trying be "one with the cOoL kIdZ in the block" like trying to be western and having a woke "protagonism complex" (tryna feel like the bida/good guys of a movie) even though we can't afford to and should'nt really be doing so in the first place (although this helps our tourism industry but sometimes the attention seeking backfires at times). It would be interesting for Indonesia to be a regional power that the Philippines can live along with since they are a lot more chill and would like to see itself "helping & hanging out with its long lost cousin" (compared to the two powerful countries trying to influence my country and always tends to think that the world revolves around them), but Indonesia is also a HUUUUUGE economic competitor because whatever the Philippines have, Indonesia terrifyingly has it like 4x even more (export crops, rice terraces, manufacturing, & more exotic culture for tourism, etc.) But I don't want the Philippines to go toxic on its cousin, so my country naturally (sometimes toxically) needs to seek trade and attention elsewhere for its own & everybody's good. Hello austronesian cousins! 😊
The heavy emphasis on separatism, in the end, is quite jarring. East Timor wasn't supposed to be part of Indonesia in the first place. Supported by the U.S, Indonesia under Soeharto invaded Timor Leste in 1975 under the pretext of anti-communism and decided to eat it. They were an occupied independent country. Separatism in Indonesia is not that big of an issue thanks to the presence of a lingua franca, increasing federalism, and heavy investment in the outer islands. Sacrificing its lust rainforest for development, handling the impact of climate change, creeping fundamentalism, and managing its human resources are more debated topics, especially in the next 50 years. But! This doesn't excuse nor discredit the lack of national discourse on the ever-present racial, ethnic, and religious discrimination. Things are still rotting. The point is, that different groups of people can still make compromises and live together without the need for an ethnostate. Civic and constitutional nationalism exist y'all.
I need to point out that Indonesia's nationalism is based on all of the regions common colonial history and not based on ethnic nationalism. Regionalism is also secondary compared to their loyalty to the country itself.
@@adwaye if you really don't get it, we Indonesian share the same struggle and share the same history of being colonized and exploited by the Dutch, share the same blood spilled when we go to war against dutch for our independence in 1945-49 so yeah that's what an Indonesian nationalism is
@@adwaye All 1700 different cultures, all the people from more than 10 thousand islands, all the different ethnic backgrounds and all the different religious background shared the same struggle and worked together to achieve one independent nation without splitting the nation based on those things above that could seperate us. If you are talking about the name of our nation indonesia, yes it never existed before. But historically speaking, the idea of "One United Nusantara Archipelago" or "Indonesia" is already there since the older kingdom of Salakanagara, Tarumanagara, Srivijaya and Majapahit. So "Indonesia" in the idea & in the realisation and not the naming did exist way before colonialism.
@@adwaye because in that era we Indonesians made 1 promises called sumpah pemuda we swear ourselves to live speak and die as Indonesian and because of that event the fight become one fight against colonialism and viola on 17 August 1945 we declared our Independence
I tend to disagree. There was barely any shared history, and the way the colonizers (not only the Dutch, btw) would treat the locals varies vastly between region to region. For example, the plantation slavery in Java would be so different towards Dutch-Minahasan relations in Sulawesi due to the vast difference in local hierarchy, culture, and natural resources. Not even all regions and ethnicities considered themselves colonized. For example, as much as I love West Papua being part of Indonesia, that was completely a political maneuver on Soekarno’s side. Ethnicity-wise, let’s be real, a ton of us, collectively, dislike each other. If anything, that’s a testament of how effective the Indonesian nationalist propaganda has been (hey, it’s worked on me too) given the short time it’s been around.
as a half indonesian and knowing that literally the world has high expectation towards the country is really overwhelming.... we have a lot of things to improve.. i think we're not ready to be the center of attention yet haha too much pressure

Indonesia is like this family who is in the middle class if economies. It’s also the Russia of the islands. They’re not that rich but they’re not that poor. Java is the oldest child who has money and the other islands are the younger siblings. Java and Sumatra are the muscle in the family. Tell me what Indonesia is like in your opinions. To travel around each room in the house, they have a zip liner and use a boat. Pls don’t get offended
Why you put Borneo as the muscle of family, clearly Sumatera island is the muscle since they are second economical power for country. You better look at Medan city and Palembang city also Batam, they are the big engine for economy compare to Kalimantan (Borneo) cities such as Balikpapan, Samarinda, Palangkaraya which are not so much stronger than the former.
Because Indonesia was not influenced by European colonizers, even managed to expel them, not a gift like most other colonial countries, Also Indonesia is not affected by Arab Wahhabism
hahah yea i think "culture(s)" sum it up the best, it's Indonesian Culture, but while being a single entity, they're all diverse different from each other, a really great way to put it
Just a correction: the “new guinea” is not Indonesia. The island is divided into 2: - Papua - Papua New Guinea Papua is in Indonesia. Papua New Guinea is different country, sharing same island.
The island name is New Guinea, Papua is other name, so Papua island = New Guinea island, shared by two soverign countries, Republic of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea

Not gonna happen anytime soon. Indonesians in general are fiercely isolationist (they don't even bother to export their cuisines abroad!), which is a huge pity since they are just as creative as anybody else. Exporting the cultural elements are still considered as very unpopular move among the populace as well as business people and the government itself - at best it would be regarded as afterthought.

Better quality of education(better teachers) 4. Poverty elevations 5. Eradicating corruption in all levels of the society 6. More infrastructure to ease the logistic to the outer islands 7. Islamic extremism 8. More high end manufacturing and leaving exporting raw materials 9. R&D to boost innovation 10. Bringing the economic potential of other islands outside java 11. Also I myself feel like british india raj and dutch east indies were similar due to the corporation running both but india was ran under direct order from london while indonesia was ran from jakarta. One thing you did not mention in the video is that indeed the dutch owned indonesia but indirectly through voc that was controlled by people who had stockes in it only when voc went bankrupt due to financing wars to seize controll of spices' monopoly the dutch state took over indonesia and had appointed a governor to run it.
just a slight but important correction: the strait of Malacca is shared with Peninsular Malaysia and (sort of by extension) Singapore. So Indonesia does not get full autonomy in things that do and do not pass through it. In fact, the busiest ports in the strait are all Malaysian, only eclipsed by the Port of Singapore (which is technically not part of the Malacca strait). Indonesia's busiest port isnt even in the Malacca strait, its off the Jakarta Bay and typically cuts through the sea between Jawa and Sumatra.

After the Yugoslavia collapse, and after the 1998 crisis, Indonesia is heavily expected to be balkanized. But luckily we arent on that stage yet, especially after the economic boom, post 1998.
Yugoslavia did not have the idea of unity, Yugoslavia only relied on military strength, while Indonesia had the idea of unity, Namely, Pancasila with the slogan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity an diversity) That's what Soekarno said to Josip Broz Tito, and it was proven that Soekarno's legacy was more successful
Balkan was united because J.B. Tito is equally charismatic like Soekarno. However, he didn't have any unity foundation to back him up like Soekarno had.

Indonesia's forests look something out of the Jurassic Period and a lot of the wild animals living in these forests look so exotic, some almost dinosaur or even alienlike.
You can find both Asiatic animals like elephant, tiger, rhino, etc (in the west region) and Australian animals like marsupial animal, cassowary, etc (in east region). There are also weird endemic animals between them in the middle part of Indonesia.
Losing em slowly though, as with every country during its conversion to an industrial economy. Without active policies to mitigate it by the time we finally get developed country status the islands would be as bald as my dad.
As an Australian, the craziest thing about Indonesia is how many thousands of years they have been trading with the outside world but somehow Australia stayed isolated. Australia is closer to Indonesia than some other parts of Indonesia! lol The other thing I know as an Australian are that the general Indonesian people are friendly and fun. They work hard and are able to take a joke and give one back
but alot of ppl in indonesia no longer likes australia, because you guys falsely accusing indonesia of genocide in papua without a single evidence meanwhile there are millions evidence of the aborigins genocide... we are closer to china now
Indonesians already traded with indigenous Australians, it was Makassar people who made trade contacts, Makassar people also teach many things to the natives of the Australian continent, Makassar people look for sea cucumbers to sell to China, It's amazing that even though the Makassarese were able to conquer Australia but they didn't do it, they preferred to trade while teaching something to the natives of the Australian continent, But when the Europeans came, the Europeans began to carry out many colonial policies by levying taxes on the Makassarese, And continue to increase tax rates, until the Makassar people feel no more profit from selling sea cucumbers, from there the contact between the Makassar people and the indigenous inhabitants of the Australian continent was cut off, then after that the European colonizers made the Australian continent a dumping ground for British criminal convicts, That's when the horror experienced by the indigenous people of the Australian continent, Makassar people are still remembered and considered brothers by the indigenous people of the Australian continent, Come to Darwin's territory and meet the Aboriginal people, Ask them about Makassar people, they will tell you many things about Makassar people, one of which is about the painting of Makassarese outrigger boats
East Timor is never the part of us even historically is never under the shadow of Dutch colonial empire, it was Portuguese, and we made a mistake for colonialized it because of cold war situation (fear of rising communistic regime at East Timor that would bring us on the same situation with Cuba although it's actually not much communistic and moreso socialism or left leaning regime but Cold War mentality became the motivation for Timor Leste invasion). Our true mistake was Sipadan and Ligitan which is now Malaysian island. The thing that i fear the most is the rise of fundamentalism (Indonesia has to be kept as secular at all cost or this country will be separated thus your point of islam as a uniting element for Indonesia is invalid, we had a constitution named Piagam Jakarta which was included an obligation to believe in Islamic god but the constitution changed after proclamation to be more accepting towards other religion, but the problem is our freedom of religion is stricted to 6 state religions and not taking account to Atheism and Agnosticism. It's not fully freedom of beliefs) and i got a mixed feeling when it comes to enviromental situation, people need to feed and a place to settle so the enviromental change on forest regions to be villages or cities is inevitable, unless if you want to genocide us, but the idea of eco-city or eco-society can make balance between the needs of urbanism and environmental preservation. Human resources are also the big issue, we still need to reform education and provide more infrastructures such as network infrastructures, schools, streets, bridges, electricities since there are still many of remote areas that haven't got electricity and proper connection from school to the village, not to mention the quality of electricity itself.
@Off Road Guy nah, that's just shitty point of view. Indonesia is left leaning while maintaining the liberal part of it. You can say we are closer to central and socialism than to communism and capitalism
Actually, it is fine to have other beliefs outside those 6. I mean, a lot of tribes do that and you won't be charges because of that. If I remember correctly, even atheism is actually okay because the point is not in believing in having religion, but rather in having morality
If they try to leverage that strategic position too much against superpowers and regional powers, the powers at be will make sure it becomes a subcontinent again. It’s best for Indonesia to not be too aggressive with how they control this important trade route.
They have a really good chance of becoming wealthy. They can do something similar to Singapore and become another big shipping and processing hub with their natural resources, large population and geography they have big opportunity. It's up to the government to decide Indonesia's fate, hopefully they make the right choice.

The big problems in Indonesia can be pointed to corruption, inequality, poor human resource, and too much centralized in Java and Jakarta. The gradually increasing lost trust in government has also been an ongoing problem in recent years, with the government often picking solutions that have a "big show" with pretty minimum impact, scapegoating, and focusing on other unnecessary stuff instead
"Unnecessary stuff" you mean developing infrastructure on other provinces Outside of java to spread economic oppurtunity and advocading for more foreign direct investment is "unnecessary"?
The biggest problem is Islam. There are Radical Pseudo Terrorist Islamists hiding in the jungles. And Indonesia is a strict follower of Islamic Law. Islam and Progress are entire opposites. Look at India. They are targeting the Muslims in an effort to turn India into a Secular Nation. Religion is the main thing that holds back progress. The moment Religion stop mattering in the West, the West had the Industrial Revolution and it hasn't stopped from there.

In this aspect Indonesia was far too vulnerable compared to India in the same 1950s+ era. Somewhere middle he says the economy should be more liberalized and then at the end says they can follow the chinese state-owned industries export model. Not like I'm advocating for any, but the respective country should apply a customized strategy considering its own geo-strategic position. And not be like "unregulated free-markets go brr". As usual at the end he said Indonesia was "unified" into a country by the dutch, even though once upon a time, the Majapahits ruled the same place as well.
I really disagree when someone say indonesia was united becuase of colonialism. There is a lot of empires that united the archipelago that has risen and fall. That is why indonesian identity is strong.
Well it’s more western centric view in general. Most people interpret different history and cultures through there own cultural and historical lens. Plus, the victor writes history and it’s only been W’s for the West for the last 500 years (until recently) so most people are gonna have a western centric view.
I was kinda sad to see the South Africa video was only on our economy, I’d love to see one on the history of politics, SA has a hilarious and depressing history of that at the same time
Indonesia is used to be referred as the Southeast Asian version of India due to many exact things (both pros and cons): large population, diverse religion and ethnic groups, a growing economy, and similarly, being embroiled in many troubles relating to territory, religion or people. Indonesia's rise is, akin to India, very turbulent at best, due to its history of struggling to connect all parts together. In some way, if India can rise, then Indonesia can, too. Except that Indonesia does not have nuclear weapons, which India has.
Hmm... Sunda Empire guys... Hohoho... Greater Sunda Islands (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan), Lesser Sunda Islands (Maluku, Bali, Nusa Tenggara), and Sahul (Papua)... Actually 'Indonesia' used as name for neutrality... Just kidding...

Thanks for making an Indonesian video, but once again you REALLY missed a few important points that I think you probably are so ignorant of 🤭 About Indonesia's unity, the country itself is more *stable* than you think, thanks a damn lot to our *national symbol* and *motto*, *The Garuda Pancasila* that holds up the 5 principles of our ideology on a shield, The Pancasila itself and our *"Bhineka Tunggal Ika"*, taken from a *600+ year old* javanese script which roughly translates to *Unity In Diversity*, and Let me tell you it's a powerful line for the people of Indonesia. We as Indonesians have been taught and learnt of how powerful unity is and how catastrophic things could spark up if we decide to be apart from each other and do not set aside our differences. A prime example of how Indonesia fell into the unworthy hands of colonizers that used the exact technique of Divide and Conquer in order to take control of our lands even further. All of those we have been multiply thought as a citizen of a *multicultural* *society* like *Indonesia* and so past events would not be repeated. So everyone would feel a stronger sense of *nationalism* that we already had *deep within* us and a hope that we would stay united even forever. Those, are the reasons of why we are still united until today, and for I hope that it would stay like that for long as a fellow Indonesian citizen that shared the same national identity as to all my beloved- fellow Indonesian countrymen. So, whatever on earth do you mean by islam uniting the country and people when it's only a majority wise for its population. I can see you are *exaggerating* so much about *Indonesia's separatism* when it doesn't even came out on the Indonesian people's mind on the daily basis. Why would it when our government has successfully took down past rebellions like the Free Aceh Movement that seceded in 2004 by an agreement and more like the South Maluku in 1950s. Why would we be so concerned when the state had tried it's best to keep our unity EVEN *without the background reason of* dutch *colonialism* in the archipelago and stick up with our national motto, when the government celebrates all of our "recognized"/ official religions by making them a public holiday that made us into a multicultural society ethnic and beliefs wise. Sure there's still stuff going on with the West Papua rebellions that the government or The *President* himself, have been trying to make things for it like *further developing* the region and it's infrastructures that have said to calm the unrest/rebels. A lot of our fellow Papuans are said to adore him for the effort he did. Even the Garuda bird that i mentioned is a mythological bird from the Hindu religion, an emblem of the world's largest muslim nation/ population by country. Do you see that happening in states like Afghanistan, Pakistan or any other muslim majority states? No single offense to them but you seem to be acting like and you're prolly also gonna be satisfied if we break into smaller pieces like we should be ain't it? I was really expecting this video to talk more about our economic situation today that i am really interested on and wanted a video from you about it as we are currently having a pretty stable and even a higher growth economy despite some inflation and spiked up gas prices and in the middle of todays world's recession that seems to spews everywhere. Our debts are quite low and majority of the people still has food to eat. That way it would match the tittle a bit more about being the Asian economic power. I would say I still do appreciated some points and this video that you've worked on in general and I am also aware that we still have a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to be the strong power we're trying to work on like some that you've mentioned in the video, although with a slight dissatisfaction from the stuff i've just mentioned. - sincerely, your Indonesian viewer 🇮🇩
Westerners are generally unable to comprehend our mindset of unity. For the rest of their (European) history, they have always been presented with a highly tribal nation building, focusing on homogenity. This mindset of tribal superiority over the others is what created the many wars and conflicts that plague their small continent.

One thing Indonesia really needs is a sports team. Imagine the national unity if they made a world cup. The government should be doing everything in their power to develop sport. It gives your nation a platform on the international stage
As others have pointed it out, ethnic issues are not exactly the most crucial one in Indonesia. Sure discriminations happen but that happens everywhere. But if you ask an everyday Indonesian what they think about that other race/culture that resides in the other island, they won’t go barbaric and deride that race/culture. In fact, one of the proudest thing to be an Indonesian is to have that diversity. So treating Indonesia as if it’s the Balkans is not exactly accurate. Our sense of unity is one of a kind, perhaps due to emphasis on nationalism and the need for it in order to live in such diverse environment.
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on ASEAN as a whole. It’s also a shameless request so we get see the animal avatars of the SEA countries hah!

For Indonesia to become a global influence, more Indonesians need to make Video Games, particularly JRPG and Visual Novel-style games that has Indonesian cultural elements in them, as well as Comics and Animation that have interesting storylines too. Are Indonesians up to this challenge of confronting and rivalling the northern East Asian countries in these fields of entertainment ? Please discuss here.
Yeah local comics are on the rise when line app was popular, so does local game. I’ve join some alpha and beta test for android game which is now no longer exist on app store and playstore, sad but at least dreadout was famous thanks to a lot of big time streamers like pewdiepie Creative industry in general still have a lot of challenge and cant get the needed traction to enter and compete in global market just yet even in the age of social media
There were already many attempts of making Indonesian culture as the center of theme/narrative for creative projects, but I think the most successful ones are the one that are much less subtle about them and involving international investment or cooperations. Examples: The Raid (showcasing Indonesia and Silat), DreadOut (local ghosts), HoloID and JKT48 (ID branch of Japanese entertainment companies -- eventually becoming international entertainers), etc. For game, I'm personally anticipating A Space for The Unbound which seems to be a very polished pixel art story based game that has garnered a lot of buzz for the last few years.
The theory of the break up of Indonesia does not make sense anymore. As it has been seen by the younger generation more inclined to be unity of the state rather than regionalization, heck a lot of local ethnic languages are predicted to be extinct in the next decade just because it has no purpose in the Indonesian educational system that used Bahasa Indonesia rather than each their own ethnic languages
And how is that a good thing? Native languages should be preserved. Also part of the reason why separatism isnt as big is because of the settler colonialism going on in Papua where they try to outnumber the native Papuans by mass-migrating Javanese there to dilute their population
@@jokerofmorocco I didn't said anything about language extinction being bad don't I? Also I didn't bring up the Papuan issue because I am not educated in that matter
@@jokerofmoroccoAlso i don't see why migrating to Papua is a bad thing. The whole reason, Indonesia is supporting mass migration into Papua is because it is so sparsely populated. Unlike real settler state like USA, Australia, and Canada. Indonesia does not marginalize papuans and force them into native reservation, and instead view them as equals
@@exelenxius5832 It's bad because the intention of the transmigration policy is to replace the Papuans to make them no longer the majority in their own lands and to make Papua lose its ethnic and cultural distinctiveness by making it the exact same as Java or Sumatra. Javanese should stop breeding like rabbits and implement family planning in Java if they're worried about population density rather than moving to other islands especially West Papua.

I wish Indonesia the best from India. I hope as India grows it's power in South Asia, so does Indonesia in Southeast Asia. It would be great to see them someday become a Southeast Asian powerhouse, although much like India, they have to face a lot of problems like oppression of minorities, and the sinking of islands.
As an Indonesian, I can say that one reason inflation was SO high back after independence was because of something we call the Lighthouse Project during Sukarno’s era. Indonesia wanted to shine light for the New Emerging Forces (anti colonialist countries) during the Cold War. That project has resulted in things like Semanggi Bridge, Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Hotel Indonesia, and more. This has led to corruption and inflation but I’m happy that Indonesia isn’t seen as a weak country now.
Some uneducated idiots don't feel like it. Believe it or not, there are actually small instances where people from both nation still fighting over trivial and unimportant matters as if it was the early 2000s.

There should have been perhaps a small mention of the new capital of Nusantara coming soon. (Also; any Indonesians, I’d be more than happy to hear your opinions on the Nusantara matter, given that all we hear in the West is either VERY positive or VERY negative…)
Nusantara was the previous name for our archipelago..consist of 2 sanskrit words : Nusa = Island; Antara = Between...The 1st Hindu Kingdom was located in East Kalimantan where Nusantara will be constructed. So it's like going back to history. Nusantara will stands on the land that was abandoned former palm oil plantation land. So the government won't destroy an active forest. @@ferraaryani3358 Ah, that’s all actually really interesting! Media makes it seem like the environment would suffer, but plantation land being repurposed seems sensible. The population thing will be interesting to see, but no one can really predict that, I think. Thank you though!

As an Indonesian, I want to explain some correction:
1) 3:49 It's not entirely true about food production is centered among coastline of 3 major Island, especially in Java. Here rice field is way deep into interior of the island. Northern part of Java island is mostly plain with some hills, having a most fertile soil in the country thanks to the volcanism nearby. For the island of Sumatra and Borneo, food production mainly nearby a river since a soil in deep interior isn't really good for planting rice (instead we planting palm oil there)
2) 6:45 By some account is still debated if Majapahit really conquered Nusantara archipelago. Other theory explain if Majapahit mainly used diplomatic power to having control overseas (by having an allies, or vassal states) since they don't even manage to conquered their neighbour in the backyard a.k.a Sundanese (though they manage to conquered Bali with military force)
3) 15:05 Is incorrect to calling inhabitants of Java as "Javanese", they're one of major ethnic mainly living in Central & Eastern Java. There's other major ethics living there need to be considered: Sundanese, Betawi, Maduranese, and other smaller one. Sundanese and Betawi mainly live in Western Java (while Maduranese living in Eastern Java alongside with Javanese)
4) 16:20 Java-centric (by politics and national development) is one of the root that giving rise of separatism here. Usually they're mad due to giving lots of resources to the central goverment but gain only a little. From few separatist movement we managed to solved 2 of them: Free Timor Timur (by giving them Independence as it should be) and GAM/Free Aceh Movement (by giving them more autonomy and all GAM leaders agreed with that in 2005)
5) 16:40 Well honestly that's a real legitimacy of current Indonesian territory: being a successor of Dutch East Indies.
Thats true. But Sumatra has good soil too everywhere, because thay have lots of volcanoes just like in java.

As a Filipino dude Indonesia is almost everything I wish my country could be (excpet for the 'x' times more islands and and even more vast) but cannot afford to do so due to our own different geographi and historical circumstances to be able to be "that country everybody is chill with":
• because they're not directly in between two powerful countries trying to use their country as a base to influnce/ manipulate/ or just plain strangle the hell out of the other country;
• not living in a very high-maintenance geographic location were food production is always getting limited by typhoons no matter how fertile the soil is, infrastructure getting "reset buttoned" by earthquakes as much as in the Philippines;
• the colonizers not generally shoving their faith and their lifestyle to the locals' face so they get to keep their own original culture and not antagonize eachother (Mindanao);
• and can live normally being themselves and not constantly & toxically trying be "one with the cOoL kIdZ in the block" like trying to be western and having a woke "protagonism complex" (tryna feel like the bida/good guys of a movie) even though we can't afford to and should'nt really be doing so in the first place (although this helps our tourism industry but sometimes the attention seeking backfires at times).
It would be interesting for Indonesia to be a regional power that the Philippines can live along with since they are a lot more chill and would like to see itself "helping & hanging out with its long lost cousin" (compared to the two powerful countries trying to influence my country and always tends to think that the world revolves around them), but Indonesia is also a HUUUUUGE economic competitor because whatever the Philippines have, Indonesia terrifyingly has it like 4x even more (export crops, rice terraces, manufacturing, & more exotic culture for tourism, etc.)
But I don't want the Philippines to go toxic on its cousin, so my country naturally (sometimes toxically) needs to seek trade and attention elsewhere for its own & everybody's good.

But historically speaking, the idea of "One United Nusantara Archipelago" or "Indonesia" is already there since the older kingdom of Salakanagara, Tarumanagara, Srivijaya and Majapahit.

Papua is in Indonesia.
Papua New Guinea is different country, sharing same island.

Wow having a Komodo Dragon as national animal is so cool
Of course brother... Dragon Force...
Komodos are found at an island not far from Flores called Komodo Island. Never been there personally as an Indonesian but yeah they’re cool
Actually compared to one horned Rhino and Java Eagle, Komodo is quite underated. Anything apart from Java island is underated
I like the rotting saliva. It's not a fast and deadly acting agent like venoms, but a disabling agent so komodos can just easily catch their preys to eat them alive.

As usual when I see this type of videos they failed understand the idea of Indonesia Nationalism and try to put it into european point of view which is, ethnicity as the sources of nationality. Can't agree more. If i make a personal list of indonesia's biggest problems i wouldn't even consider unity of the country in the top 10
Indonesia's main challenges:
1. Equal development across the country
2. Competency of (mostly) the lower end of the government (i said the lower end because like it or not jokowi is more than competent running the country so far)
3. Better quality of education(better teachers)
4. Poverty elevations
5. Eradicating corruption in all levels of the society
6. More infrastructure to ease the logistic to the outer islands
7. Islamic extremism
8. More high end manufacturing and leaving exporting raw materials
9. R&D to boost innovation
10. Bringing the economic potential of other islands outside java
11. Better waste management (please don't litter the ocean)

Fun fact the place which is now jakarta used to be an entirely different town the voc burnt down and settled themselves to use as a central trading port for the indonesian archipeligo.
Yes we need more powerful countries in asia to counter china, establish peace and a stable region. All the best to Indonesia for development❤let's join hands and be prosperous together ❣️🙏🤜🤛
In Yugoslavia, almost all regions want independence, in Indonesia, only one region, West Papua, wants independence
@@jokerofmorocco Even for West Papua the support for independence is mostly reserved for militants in remote mountains and vocal activists, and there's a lack of strong political or even military movement that unites it. In the past GAM (Aceh) were far more united and supported by locals, but even them eventually peacefully reintegrate with Indonesia. With current trajectory of development and effort to integrate West Papua I don't see West Papua to ever successfully separate themselves.
@@zeroyuki92 Well for West Papua, almost all ethnic Papuans want independence. Obviously, if they try to fight for it, they'll get brutally murdered by the Indonesian military so lots don't voice their support. As an Australian, the craziest thing about Indonesia is how many thousands of years they have been trading with the outside world but somehow Australia stayed isolated. Australia is closer to Indonesia than some other parts of Indonesia! lol
The other thing I know as an Australian are that the general Indonesian people are friendly and fun.
Clearly, it was the European colonizers who made Australia isolated because it was used as a dumping ground for British royal convicts

If I remember correctly, even atheism is actually okay because the point is not in believing in having religion, but rather in having morality
hope this guy makes a video about Malaysia, would really love to watch it!
If they try to leverage that strategic position too much against superpowers and regional powers, the powers at be will make sure it becomes a subcontinent again. It’s best for Indonesia to not be too aggressive with how they control this important trade route.
Great input, thanks!
For sure. It's important for rising powers to be mindful that current powers are always going to watch the throne
They have a really good chance of becoming wealthy. They can do something similar to Singapore and become another big shipping and processing hub with their natural resources, large population and geography they have big opportunity. It's up to the government to decide Indonesia's fate, hopefully they make the right choice.
Nice perspective. The government here is also capable of using commodities that are booming. Encouraging the development of the digital market. Encouraging the advancement of infrastructure. And a lot of positives. There are criticisms and obstacles but there is hope. Thank you

Quite a 'Murica-centric view. Nationalized industries and centralized control was important to keep the islands united and fend off any colonial takeovers.

This video made me alot hopeful about this country, when I wasn't before

One thing Indonesia really needs is a sports team. Imagine the national unity if they made a world cup. The government should be doing everything in their power to develop sport. It gives your nation a platform on the international stage
Yep soft power is quite usefull. Just look at south korea and Japan.
We're strong on badminton
Sports is already quite a big thing here. Football, badminton, lots of big stadiums and motogp circuit
indonesia soccer team sucks i have to admit that
Ever heard about badminton?
Indonesia is world class in badminton
I like how you represent the countries as animals
Please consider making a video on ''Algeria vs the future'' or Morocco vs the Future
Somewhat appropriate this video is after one on Russia being screwed with how Java has more people than Russia.
Absolutely love your channel
how don’t you have a million subs yet??
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on ASEAN as a whole. It’s also a shameless request so we get see the animal avatars of the SEA countries hah!

nice. 3:20 I was giggling in irony about the cutting trees part.
13:23 You can represent Singapore as an otter. It's an iconic animal in the island city state and can be seen almost anywhere that has access to rivers and canals.
why not a lion i mean its in the name
@@rifqimujahid4907 Because lion is already used for another country.
@@syncout9586 It is mythical creature sea lion.
The name of city originate from Sanskrit word Singa meaning lion and Pura meaning city
@@reddragon100 Yes I know. I am Singaporean. But it doesn't make sense for Singapore to be represented by a mythical creature while other countries are represented by real animals

I’ve join some alpha and beta test for android game which is now no longer exist on app store and playstore, sad but at least dreadout was famous thanks to a lot of big time streamers like pewdiepie
Creative industry in general still have a lot of challenge and cant get the needed traction to enter and compete in global market just yet even in the age of social media
Ah man, i always wanted to develop a shooter game :(
The theory of the break up of Indonesia does not make sense anymore.
@@jokerofmoroccoUnified language is good as it creates a unified national identity.
LETS GOOO! I’ve been wanting this video for soo long 😊.

One correction tho, because of UNCLOS, we cannot charge ships that go through our waters, but in case of emergencies (probably disputes/conflict with other nations) we can close access of our waters temporarily
Sir can you tell me how there is oppression of minorities in India.
As a Malaysian I honestly feel glad we can have another friendly power in the SEA region
Some uneducated idiots don't feel like it.
Believe it or not, there are actually small instances where people from both nation still fighting over trivial and unimportant matters as if it was the early 2000s.
Indonesia is not a friendly power to Malaysia though. Many Indonesian consider Malaysia similar to how Germany consider Austria. If a nationalist or populist take control, they may attempt to annex Malaysia again
@@exelenxius5832 Keyword : if
Yes, such a threat does exist but I don't feel like it is extremely plausible after Sukarno's attempt
@@exelenxius5832 germany mostly considers austria as a brother, separated only due to the whims of history, and we could have very well been the same country if things had gone a bit differently 150 years ago

There should have been perhaps a small mention of the new capital of Nusantara coming soon.
Though there isn’t much reporting on it in the West, it is a difficult concept and a mention would’ve been a good touch.
Kalimantan is the safest island that's not prone to earthquake. Nusantara will be inhabited by 2-3 millions people.
@@ferraaryani3358 Ah, that’s all actually really interesting!
Media makes it seem like the environment would suffer, but plantation land being repurposed seems sensible.
The population thing will be interesting to see, but no one can really predict that, I think.
Thank you though!
@@potatobird52 and one more thing...East Kalimantan is located right in the center of the archipelago so it will be easy for government to control the whole Indonesia and the Java centric will be over..it will sound more fair for all citizens.
