Indonesia is the largest developing economy in Southeast Asia, with a gross domestic product of over US$1 trillion. The country’s size and location have made it Indonesia an attractive strategic partner for China and the United States to influence the Asean region. Indonesia has attempted to remain neutral in the China-U.S rivalry, but if tensions between the two continue to rise, will Indonesia be forced to take sides or adopt a foreign policy that doesn't align with either superpower?

Indonesia got $22Billion from russia investment, $14Billion approve from the US military and assistance + $3Billion energy project, and more than $18Billion multiyear investment from china. That is insane how they balance the diplomatic ties for their national interest. i mean, not every country can do that.

For a country of Indonesia's size, it's beneficial to remain independent and neutral. Big countries can do that, for small countries that is much more difficult.

    • @lil_jong-un6668
      @lil_jong-un6668 2 года назад +352

Yes, i would even say that's a mandatory for Indonesia's survival. If we're not neutral, one of those superpowers would support insurgency in our country. The US would support Indonesia's insurgency groups if it choose China's side and vice versa.
Indonesia is very big so break ups insurgencies could be fragile although Indonesia is pretty stable now.

our military is not capable of preventing invasions from big power, unless we go the ukrainian way (i.e ordinary citizens are given weapons and ordered to fight at the frontlines).. with the increasing tension between Washington and Beijing, I genuinely don't think Indonesia will be able to stay neutral in the long term

      According to the documentary "Warmonger's"
It doesn't matter if you're neutral. They have different ways to target your country.
"When America wants to go to war with someone, we invent the reasons."
Take the Iraq war and the Afghanistan war for example.
Anyone remember this history? 1965 Indonesia coup.
CIA involvement in coup 1965 is one great example on how the west took sides by supplying weapons, made propaganda and indirectly killed more than 3 million innocent lives. Their strategy is based on "divide and conquer". This document was declassified by CIA because many activists around the globe condemn the war crimes of US and their allies. Not only that, CIA overthrew the legit president of indonesia and replaced it with a corrupt Suharto who supported the US. That's how US mining company 'freeport' got hold of indonesian biggest gold mine.
Declassified files outline US support for 1965 indonesian massacre - National Security Archive.
      --Jeff Lith
      And this
Even today in 2022, this is still happening. People have forgotten how a vial of detergent was used by colin powell to wage an illegal WMD war against Iraq, killing millions of Iraqis.
Now they are using the same Cold War strategy to brainwash their citizens and the world for another hybrid war against Russia and China. Hence the Xinjiang cotton propaganda going on now spread by a homophobic right wing religious nut case German called Adrian Zenz.

      @@condorX2 "It doesn't matter if you're neutral".
Neutrality DOES matter, because it may prevent you from getting involved in a conflict between other parties. If you were allied to one of those parties, there's a high risk you would also be a target. That's basic logic for children. Neutrality cannot protect you from everything. They may always be adversaries who want what you have, and they don't care whether you're neutral or not.

As Indonesian, I still think Indonesia needs to work on their own economic and military power if they want to remain neutral. Like it as not, both China and US are superpowers and given the inclination, they may be able to exert damaging pressure onto Indonesia, whether via coercion (too much economic dependence) or via guns (all out war). If Indonesia wants to remain neutral, they need to be strong both in military power and economical power, or the country will buckle.

We maintain relation with both North and South Korea. Basically we give warm welcome for all who agreed to respect our neutrality and are not interfere in our public will to be in peace.

Now, for our country to pursue a true independent foreign policy like India and Indonesia, the Philippines needs to abrogate its Mutual Defense Treaty, Visiting Forces Agreement as well as the EDCA. We need to invest more in our armed forces to finally stop relying on foreign powers who we all know are all bark and no bite, we should also be pragmatic on dealing with terrirtorial disputes with our Neighbour, China. We shouldn't antagonize them as they can be our partner for the future.

Their strategy is based on "divide and conquer". This document was declassified by CIA because many activists around the globe condemn the war crimes of US and their allies. Not only that, CIA overthrew the legit president of indonesia and replaced it with a corrupt Suharto who supported the US. I quite disagree that we should side with the US if a war happens. Currently, economically we have more benefits with China than the US. We also gain no benefit by antagonising China, or worse, a devastated China.
If China is out, then what will we gain from the US? As far as i am concerned, there was only little benefit by siding to the West for Indonesia. The biggest Western benefactors for us so far are actually Japan and South Korea, but i heard that the perception of the two seem to decline too slowly. South Korea is found to actually not have favourable view of Indonesia, and Japan is stagnating (not counting pop culture influence of course). So, even ideological wise Indonesia seems to be aligned with the West, it doesn't seem there's a lot to gain by siding with them.

Just by distance alone, if (pretty big if) Indo is forced to pick a side, we seem better to just join force with the west just to limit China expansionism in ASEAN lake. Today it's Asean lake, the next time (if we fail to defend that), it might be natuna island itself even Batam and whole of Riau islands.
Distance really matters. You can't just ignore physical geography no matter how delicious those "Taipan money" is. Also Malacca strait.
I think people are being delusional when they think China is benign power. As has been shown during the latter half of the last decade, and as the interviewee said, China's view of interest is just too myopic, and will undercut Indonesia interest even for small China gains. That's not how you make friends (yes there's no permanent friends, but concept of friends do exist, West "democratic" alliance show that).

@@hikashia.halfiah3582 I mean, then what? We will depend on the US again? How did that work out for us last time? You think we are now developed enough to satisfy ourselves? The best way is really just being neutral. Honestly, the long term consequences to make China enemy is also big. It's not just money, but also technology, science, infrastructure and education. You think the West will give us that? No they can't, and they won't. It's the main reason i see little benefit to side with the West.

We Asians are inferior to the white people. We been serving as their slaves for centuries, why change now? The benefits of siding with US is we get to go back to our heritage of being subservient slaves to the Western superiority. Think about that. Do you really want us Asian to be strong n powerful race? That's what's China is doing right now. And many Asians disagree with that because they want to return to being slaves.

It’s only reasonable if Indonesia ally itself with the US when the time force it to take side. The biggest foreign threat to Indonesia right now is China’s presence in the South China Sea. The guy in the video was right, the US is less threatening to Indonesia. China’s presence in the South China Sea also poses as the biggest threat to ASEAN as well. Can you imagine, 5 ASEAN countries are highly threatened because of China’s Nine-dash Line. They will collectively against China. And those 5 countries have a pretty close military relationship with the US. It’s all about defense at the end, and the US is the only hope for seeking protection.

Americans and western influenced hongkongers are obsessed about who is friends or enemies. While the rest of the world worried how to develop our economy and elevate the people. China is just doing that. He doesn't care what others think as long as the Country is economically vibrant. Meanwhile Americans and Europe worried about making friends that is literally useless move when real war happens.
Anyway, Indonesia was founding member of NAM (non-aligned movement) since cold war era. So they would choose such way no matter what. India was also part of it. But since DOKLAM issue they joined QUAD which is literally useless or rhetoric move. Everything is all about politics. China knows it well.

There's no way our Muslim community allowed the government to pick US over China. Muslim leaders here rarely intervene in politics and foreign policies, but their influence are very deep in Muslim people more than the government. The government knew what the red line and they will never dare crossed it.
