    You don't need to create a Windows USB or backup drivers, The Ally has cloud restore built into the BIOS. All you have to do after installing the SSD is run it in the BIOS and it'll download Windows 11 as well as all the required Asus software for the Ally.

    • @Tyler-hs9eu
      @Tyler-hs9eu Год назад +53

      So as simple as removing old ssd, putting in new one then running it and the ally will download everything needed for fresh start?
      Just want to clarify as this stuff can be a little tricky at times

    • @nosirrahx
      @nosirrahx Год назад +20

      A lot of people like to blow away their OEM install and do either a fresh install or if they are more advanced, build their own modified Windows install with all of the crap they wont ever use removed ahead of time. Dumping drivers and integrating them into a new image is pretty trivial as all you need is 2 DISM commands, one to dump and one to integrate.
      Since the hardware in all of these new handhelds predates Windows 10 and 11 its a good idea to pre-integrate drivers. I have read that some people can't even do a clean install without drivers because the Windows installer cannot see the storage at all without them.
      I've got an Ally on the way (and an AOKZOE A1Pro) and the very first thing I am doing is getting drivers up to date, dumping them and then integrating them into a modified Windows 10 image. I cannot stand looking at a start menu filled with crap I wont ever use.

    To prevent damage to the components, I would recommend disconnecting the battery first before replacing the SSD. According to some teardown videos, it can be known that the protection plate of the battery is in the middle. The battery is connected to the motherboard via a cable (black wire, white connector).

    It's incredible how easy it is to get access to the ssd and upgrade it. Pity the prices for 2230 ssd's are still steep relative to 2280, but in the future the gap can narrow. Allegedly one doesn't even need to make a backup of windows 11 and the drivers since the Asus Bios has cloud restore that can grab everything automatically which is awesome.

    Very unnecessary and over complex way of upgrading SSD when ASUS has cloud restore function that would install a new instance of Windows 11 with all the drivers and apps for the Ally without you doing anything. This video would just confuse a bunch of folks who never did fresh install before and would create a buggy and unstable platform as a result of trying to ‘monkey see, monkey do’ approach

    A larger SSD than a 512 is only needed if Ally is your only gaming PC. I don't see the need to keep my entire steam library of PC games when majority of the time I mainly focusing on play a few games while all the other games are just taking up space.

Use PCIE4.0 Transfer Board for Rog Ally Handheld SSD Adapter 90 Degrees [this will make the installation horizontal instead of vertical so no need to cut any plastic] $10us. Awesome video, as usual for you. Definitely saving it for June 13th, already have the 2tb Micron SSD. I have a question, what about the windows license key? I didn't see that part in your video and it always asks for it during windows install. Do I just install it without a key, or does that not show up in the install process for this device? Thanks!

    The simple way is, install minitoolpartitions, clone your ssd into the new one using usb/type c

    Does it have a microSD expansion slot? Can you just add a 1 TB SD card?

    ASUS have cloud recovery built into the BIOS, no need to clone or backup drivers.
    Also, you didn't disconnect the battery when swapping the ssd - not necessary?

      If your device is unpowered, disconnecting battery is not strictly necessary. Your only concern is a static charge that may remain from the last power on, but if you spend 5-10 minutes while removing the screws and opening the back cover, the static charge should dissipate. I would still suggest that disconnecting the battery and waiting 5 minutes just out of precaution is the safest approach.

    You can install a full length ssd with a bit of modification.

    Didn't know about Double Driver. That's actually super useful. Do you plan on covering over locking if Afterburner would allow?

    Would you recommend Tiny 11 Builder for this as an alternative to full Windows 11?

    Shouldn't the power from the battery be disconnected before swapping the SSD?

    Is it worth it to put on better thermal paste? I didn't see anything about liquid metal or premium thermal paste on the ROG listing. I’d be interested in seeing if better thermal paste would add more performance then the paste already applied.

    Are you planning to redo the benchmarks with the updated drivers before the Ally’s official launch? I’d like to see if there was any optimizations made since the announcement.

    So if you replace the internal ssd and you bought a 1TB ssd you only end up getting 512gb since you removed the one that came with the system?
