Generic name: Losartan.
Brand names: Cozaar.
Available as a tablet.
How to use it?
- Tablet: Just swallow it with half a glass of water.
It is usually best to take this drug at a fixed time. If you experience dizziness as a side effect, you could best take it in the evening before going to bed.
When to use it?
Losartan is part of a group of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB). These drugs cause the dilation of the blood vessels and reduced aldosterone secretion. This causes a drop in blood volume and blood pressure.
Therefore Losartan can be used to treat; a high blood pressure, heart failure and kidney problems.
What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- However, when treating a high blood pressure in adults, most doctors will start with an initial dose of 50 mg 1x/day. Which if necessary can be increased up to a max. dose of 100 mg 1/day.
- When treating heart failure, the initial dose is; 12,5mg 1/day. Which if needed can be build up to a maximum dose of 150mg 1/day.
What are the side-effects?
- Common (1-10%): low blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue, kidney function problems and renal failure.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): Palpitations, chest pain, oedema, cough, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, headache, somnolence, rash and itching.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): various serious side effects.
Safety:
- It is safe to drive while using this drug.
- Furthermore, alcohol widens the blood vessels. It can therefore increase the side effect of dizziness at the beginning of treatment. Try drinking alcohol in moderation first so you can estimate its effects.
- Losartan can also have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
- Lastly, Losartan could be dangerous for pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding. To be sure, always discuss this with your personal doctor.

Been taking Losartan 100mg for about a year now. I've been experiencing more anxiety and worse, horrible nightmares almost every night that cause waking in the wee hours. I've seen anxiety and nightmares as a side effect online, but my Dr. doesn't believe me. I need sleep!
This medication is poison! It causes ringing in the ear! I had anxiety and ringing in the ear! I weaned myself off that medication..,

Got put on losartan after lotrel was giving me heart palpitations and atenolol dropped my heart rate into dangerous bradycardia levels. Hopefully third times the charm but is there any foods to avoid on this med?
Can I take Lozartan Potasion when I have 0.13 of Neocrotina but it reduce to 0.8.4 with a lot of water and cranberry juice and water melon

My 5th day now using 50mg Losartan and my blood pressure dropped from 143/98 to 110/80(avg). However, a side effect that I'm noticing now is irregular heartbeat after eating.

This was very helpful as I’m lopressor for nine years now and I have had continuing blood sugar increases as well as a high hematocrit level and hemoglobin. I have seen continual increases since 2015 when I was placed on this medication. Since my blood sugar range has gone way up as well I was looking for a medication replacement that would tackle both of these issues. This seems to be it. Plus I’ve developed numbness in left middle fingertip of right hand which is another side effect. Ty for sharing this information.
im on 25 mg of losartan for high blood pressure but my blood pressure on that dose is 116/71. i want to lower the dose to 12.5 mg. does it even pay to be on them at that low of a dose for blood pressure since the standard dose is 50 mg?
Recently went from 25 mg every night for about a year then cut down to 12.5mg every night. After about a week I’m feeling lightheaded today for the first time ever all day long. Is this normal?

Hi. I have been taking Cozaar for 1 year now to isolated diastolic hypertension. Yesterday I had my annual medical check up. Everything appeared as normal but I now have a few small kidney stones (0.2-0.4mm). My question is could the Cozaar have caused this? I am only 40 and I have concerns about what this may do to my kidneys long term.
It is possible for this medicine to cause kidney stones, such a thing has never been seen.
angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBsThis is this type of drug.The effect on kidney is done by trucks with calcium channel blockers which is a catagory medicine for BP.

Do not take Berberine if you are on this medication. Not sure if metaforin has the same "nulifying " effect on Losartan.
I have been on losartan 50mg water pil for a couple of years. I get muscle cramps, sore muscles and joints. Is this normal? My BP has been average 150/100 and my DR just changed my dosage to 100mg. Not sure if I should do this.
How old are you? The 120 isn’t meant for older people. Find an age blood pressure chart. I am 80 and 137 is perfect for me. I stopped all medications and feel great again. No aches or pains. There are natural supplements that work with no side effects. Of course if you have serious heart problems, you really need to speak to dr and say that you want to change medications. Do research on medications, the side effects. You need to take control of your own health. RUclips has lots of info and do searches. Also blood pressure measured at the dr office is always wrong. The correct way empty your bladder ( a full bladder increases blood pressure reading). Feet need to be on the floor while sitting and the cuff not on clothes but skin. The reading should be taken at home, several times a day, and you will get different readings. Blood pressure isn’t just one number at the dr office (white coat syndrome). Also rest and calm yourself then Take it. Good Luck.

It’s not a beta blocker (like carvedilol) or calcium channel blocker (like diltiazem) which are the two classes that reduce heart rate. Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker with little effect on heart rate directly.

Your BP changes through out the day, is that average? if it is do what @bien says and go low sodium and stop eating salty foods like chips and pizza.

OK....I started with Losartan 50mg to bring down my b/p.....but it didn't!!!! So my doctor increased it to 100mg once in the morning WITH Clonidine!!! I asked if I should STOP Losartan because even the 100mg had NO effect on my b/p. I was told to take BOTH medications!!! So, I am asking YOU....WHY do you think I was told to take BOTH??????
Since starting Losartan 2 months ago I have experienced severe low back pain. The pain is coming from my SI joint on the left side. My initial dosage was 50 mg, but that’s been reduced to 25mg (taken 12.5mg twice a day). All BP meds have negative side effects, so switching to another medication would probably bring another side effect. Thank you for sharing your experience.
How good did it lower your BP? Mine is quite high.....the only reason I am agreeing to it. Did they check your kidney labs
@@vicki7807 my BP has been lowered from 170/85 to 126/70, but my hypertension is Labile Hypertension, so before taking Losartan, I could be 126/70 one day, and then be at 200/95 the next day. Losartan can raise potassium levels, so I’ll have that checked annually. Kidney labs are normal.
Try different manufacturer or even the same manufacturer but different manufactured date.

167/109 only prescribed 25mg I was prescribed 100 mg !!!!!😳
Since I am taking this medicine (50 mg ) I got anxiety and depression. Is that the side affect of this medicine?
How long have you been taking it? I've been taking it for 10 weeks and the first 2-3 weeks I felt like what you described, then over time the side effects decreased... or I just got used to them. One thing that really helped me with side effects is exercise...however I never do hard work or exercise right after I take Lorsartan (with metoprolol) at 10pm, I exercise from about 6pm- 8pm then take a shower, relax and take it with a meal. Hang in there, you should get used to it.

@@vicki7807 No, Vicki, they haven't . I'd like to think I wouldn't be prescribed a drug that harms my kidneys, but I'll look into it. Maybe there are supplements/ drugs that counter act the negative effects.

He didn’t verbally say it. But it was actually on the screen under common side effects. Wonder why he would not say that? It’s the most severe side effect!🤔
@@jasonreadye3248 Yes and my doctor actually warned me about this. He said if I got dehydrated while on the drug it would cause my kidney's to be damaged.

Yes it does mess with my sleep bc I take @ nite b4 I go 2 bed.not morning hours bc I work evenings shift. It have me fatigue and drowsy WEN I wakeup..Xtra TIRED...PERIODT

You probably don't even need anything for that level. I was told under 140/90 was a safe level.
Lowering salt and walking daily will lower this naturally. This BP is very safe! Don’t take the medicine if you don’t really need it
